BIRMINGHAM’S OUT OF OFFICE GARAGE
PLASTIC SURGERY FOR THE GUYS JUNE
Have you ever wondered, “Do fathers matter? What differences do I make in my home as a dad?” Let’s start with the simple answer — the importance of a father is tremendous! Fathers make countless differences in their homes and family. However, how much impact you decide to make as a dad is entirely up to you!
A father’s gifts of quality time, life-giving words, and positive actions have a long-lasting impact on his children.
As I reflect on fatherhood this month, here are just a few of the ways dads build up their homes:
• A father’s strength can be powerful
• Hugs from a dad can be deeply comforting
• A dad’s smile can instill joy and confidence
• Time with a dad can be fun and productive
• A dad’s guidance can be life-changing and foundational
• Adventures with a dad can be exciting and memorable
Let your father or a father figure in your life know how much he matters to you. And if you are a dad, let us be the first to say - thank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you as well as the community around you.
Happy Father’s Day!

BIRMINGHAM’S OUT OF OFFICE GARAGE IS MORE THAN SLEEK CAR STORAGE — IT’S A NEW BUSINESS MODEL BASED ON COMMUNITY.
ARTICLE BY LYNNE KONSTANTINWhen Syed Ahmed was younger, he used to ride motorcycles.
“But there’s nothing fun about riding a motorcycle by yourself,” he says. “You want to go out riding with people. Cars aren’t that different — you want to have people to share it with.”
That desire for a community of people with a like-minded passion motivated Syed, a former mortgage broker at Quicken Loans, and his wife, Erica, armed with an MBA from Wayne State University, to create Out Of Office Garage, a members-only car club — plus so much more — in Birmingham’s Rail District.
Always a car enthusiast, Syed, with Erica, launched Platinum Motorcars 12 years ago, creating a new model of how supercars are marketed and sold. The high-end boutique car dealership, also in Birmingham, requires cars for sale to meet one of three criteria: “Make us giggle while driving; turn heads; or possess features commonly referred to as ‘luxury’”
— Audi, BMW, Aston Martin, Land Rover, Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley among them. They pride themselves on their ability to match their clients with the best vehicles the market has to offer — and they’re able to do so because, at the heart of the business, they are also car-obsessed chasers of the thrill, nostalgia and beauty that a hyper-exotic car offers. Plus, their clients become friends to play with.
Three years ago, the couple purchased the space at the end of Cole Street, with the intent of building a dealership warehouse. As they began renovations, Syed says, “we realized that this was the perfect opportunity to deliver something our community had been asking for, a place where everyone could hang out, as a social space, and take the experience we deliver to a whole other level.”
The husband-and-wife team tapped architectural designer Christopher Burcham, owner of Bldg001 in Detroit, to create a cutting edge-yet-welcoming,
highly functional space. The 16,000-square-foot stateof-the-art climate-controlled warehouse houses 28 custom-built multi-tier auto lifts to hold more than 80 member vehicles, while offering on-site wash and detail services five days a week.
In addition, a 2,500-square-foot members’ lounge is equipped with professional-grade SimRacing simulators, a full-service coffee bar and kitchen and a business center with workspaces scattered throughout (plus more work spaces on the mezzanine).
Out Of Office Garage offers two memberships: car storage or social-only membership. Currently, cars stored — about $20 million worth — include gems like a 1983 Lamborghini Countach; a 2023 Lamborghini Countach; a 2004 Porsche Carrera GT; a 2017 Ford GT; an IMSA Racing Series GT4 class (“an actual race car, it’s not allowed to be driven on the road,” Syed says) and a BAC Mono (“the only one in the state of Michigan).
“We call it ‘collection management’ for people with these kinds of cars,” Syed says. “In addition to just having them there, we keep an eye on them, we keep them in such a condition that if they want to come and drive it, they don’t have to think about whether the battery is good, the tires are good. They just go into their portal, say they want to collect their vehicle and it’s ready to go.”
“There are cheaper options if you just want to store a car,” Erica says. “But we are trying to build a community. The majority of members are business-owners, entrepreneurs, some athletes, and there’s organic networking happening among them. Syed and I can see their relationships growing as a result of meeting other like-minded people.”
People come just to hang out, host birthday parties or even take a meeting. “We have people working here every day, sitting with their laptops, taking calls, CONTINUED >

meeting clients,” she says. “Our goal was to create versatility.”
Syed and Erica had often planned (and still do) client-appreciation events at the dealership. With Out Of Office Garage, they were ready to amp it up.
“We are trying to curate experiences for people who all like the same thing,” Erica says. Sunday Formula 1 viewing parties, poker nights, fall colors tours and their own version of Cars & Coffee, held instead over cocktails in the evenings, are popular gatherings. A recent event was a weekend retreat of luxury glamping at the Fields in South Haven, replete with a private chef’s dinner, a spa day and a private track day at nearby Gingerman Raceway. Next November, members will fly together to Las Vegas to watch the F1 race.
“Basically, I’m a car guy,” Syed says. “I look at it like, what do I want to do? Then we set it up so I can do it with other people.”
Ninety percent of OOOG’s members are parents (including Syed and Erica, who have three young daughters) and 89 percent are dads. “It’s become a place for dads to pass on their passion and love for cars to their kids,” Erica says. “We make sure that at least every two months we do an event that is family-friendly, whether it’s a toy drive for Ronald McDonald House, setting up a giant movie screen or renting out a theater to watch a car movie. We are actively trying to engage the kids and spread the love for cars. Our fridge is always stocked with juice boxes and the racing simulators are equipped for the smallest of humans.”
At the end of the day, says Syed, “we’ve always been of the belief that if we take care of our clients, and make sure it’s not all about the money, we would make the money and hopefully make friends.”
Adds Erica, “We’ve met some really incredible people. Sometimes this is a struggle, because there are no boundaries — clients are friends and friends are clients. But it’s testament to how cars bring people together in such a pure and authentic way. And we are so grateful.”

BCL What is your greatest strength?
BS One of my greatest strengths is my ability to empower and support our team. I’m here to help facilitate change, but I don’t have all the answers. That’s why I rely on our outstanding team to help me understand what to prioritize. I ask our leaders to share potential solutions with me whenever they identify a problem. We have so much knowledge and expertise across our organization. I am proud of what our team
has already achieved and excited to see what we can do next.
BCL How do you define
BS At Corewell Health, our mission, vision and values define what success looks like for our organization. Our mission is to improve health, instill humanity and inspire hope. Our vision is a future where health is simple, affordable, equitable and exceptional. Every decision we make is guided by our values of compassion, collaboration, clarity, curiosity and courage. Sometimes we take small steps and other times we take a big leap, but whenever we can move in the direction of these guiding principles, I call that a success.
BCL What are your proudest accomplishments?
BS Personally, I’m an extremely proud father of four beautiful children. They are successful, kind and compassionate. I am so fortunate to be their dad. They inspire me every day. Professionally, I am proud and honored to be the president of Corewell Health. We have so many wonderful team members who serve our communities. It is a privilege to have a role where I can support and champion this amazing team.
BCL What advice do you wish you’d had when you were younger — or would give your younger self?
BS It’s better to find the fire inside people instead of lighting a fire under them. CONTINUED >
JASON RAZNICK
A passionate award-winning entrepreneur, Jason Raznick is the founder of Detroit-based Benzinga, a financial content ecosystem that makes information easier to consume — it is read by more than 25 million people every month. While a student at University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, Raznick founded two successful digital startups. He has been named to DBusiness ’ 30 in Their 30s and Crain’s Detroit Business 40 Under 40. He lives in Bloomfield Hills with his wife, Stacey, and their three children — and loves to coach his son’s flag football team.
BCL What is your greatest strength?
JR A true passion for working with others. My energy comes from being around others and I believe that every single person has the ability to achieve more than they believe they can.
I push those around me to think big, take leaps that may be intimidating, and to grow outside of their comfort zones. This has been critical for my personal development, for building our business, Benzinga, and it has been incredibly rewarding to see those around me achieve success.
BCL How do you define success?
JR For me, success is the holistic evaluation of several domains, including my family life, personal development and business. The commonality
between all the domains through which I think about success is that people are paramount: I try to live my life in a way that leads the people around me to achieve their goals and break their own barriers of how they define success.
BCL What are your proudest accomplishments?
JR I was told I may never be able to read when I was younger. I think ignoring the naysayers is something I am proud of. Getting married and having our three kids is also something I am very proud of.
From the business side, starting Benzinga with $3,000 and seeing where it is now — whether it’s seeing one of our articles on Yahoo! Finance or our videos playing at gas stations throughout the country.
BCL What advice do you wish you’d had when you were younger — or would give your younger self?
JR It doesn’t matter what you start, it only matters what you finish! It is so easy for us to get excited about new ideas and opportunities for us to impact the world — but that impact is only felt if the idea is run through the finish line.
When I was younger, I had a few startups gaining traction and on the verge of real success, but excitement for the next idea kept me from “finishing” what I’d already started.

BCL What is your greatest strength?
DF My greatest strengths would be my ability to stay authentic and optimistic. The other skill that I possess is being able to effectively communicate with people, build trust, through authenticity, and inspire people to perform at a higher level than they thought possible. Maximizing talent.
BCL How do you define success?
DF Building a culture that demands excellence and is the best at what they do. Whether this is a start-up or mature business, both have their own constant challenge to continuously improve.
BCL What are your proudest accomplishments?
DF My most proud business accomplishment is turning around what was almost a complete disaster in the outdoors, starting a professional hunting league, and then pivoting it into becoming the largest outdoor content/ad network on the Internet and exiting the company to a Canadian public company.
Another accomplishment would be HealthRise, our healthcare, tech and consulting company we’ve been building for the last decade. HealthRise is arguably the best revenue-cycle consulting company in the country and someday will be the best healthcare consulting and tech company in the country.
My biggest philanthropic accomplishments were donating $1 million to the Jewish Federation, something we are very proud of.
Another philanthropic accomplishment was joining Pam Good’s founding board and helping to start and grow Beyond Basics, the best literacy training/tutoring business in the country. It’s an incredible nonprofit that is changing the world and giving kids a shot in life by learning to read and write.
BCL What advice do you wish you’d had when you were younger — or would give your younger self ?
DF The advice I would give a younger me, or someone else would be the following:
First, many issues seem like a big deal and in that moment, it can seem so huge and so real and so substantial, but it ain’t shit. Nothing is as big a deal as it seems. Take a deep breath, count your blessings. Then work on dealing with the issue and it won’t be as big of a deal as you thought.
Second — this is especially for people who want to have start-up businesses or early-stage businesses — spend time on sales and on business development, especially if you’re the founder/CEO: Never stop selling. The day you do is the day you die. ABS: Always Be Selling.

BIRMINGHAM’S JASON GEISZ TELLS US WHAT’S BEHIND THE PERSEVERANCE HE GIVES TO EVERYTHING HE CARES ABOUT — FAMILY, BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY.
It's somewhat ironic that Jason Geisz describes himself as a pretty simple person, considering everything he does.
Geisz, 44, is, first and foremost, a family man. He's an adoring father to Burke, 8; Julia,12; Marja, 14; and husband to Brooke. He's the CEO and founder of Famiglia Wealth, a boutique wealth-management firm focusing on family
wealth planning, tax-efficient investment management, liquidity event planning and generational wealth transfer. In 2021, he was recognized as a Forbes Best in State Wealth Advisor.
Geisz is also a fierce competitor who has raced thousands of miles on sailboats and tasted victory twice in the Port Huron-toMackinac sailboat race. He's earned medals in marathons and triathlons.
He's been an active board member and fundraiser for several organizations, including the Karmanos Cancer Center and the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan, helping these nonprofits raise millions.
Geisz, who lives in Birmingham and works in Bloomfield Hills, sat down with Birmingham City Lifestyle to discuss why and how he accomplishes so much.
The “why” is the easy part.
“I'm so fortunate and blessed to be where I am,” Geisz says. “I feel like I have to give back. It’s not even a question. It's part of my faith. It's part of what I believe. It's part of how I was raised and what Brooke and I are teaching our children.”
Regarding his athleticism, some of it traces back to the pandemic. Covid forced him, like many, to work from home, which he didn't enjoy — he likes having the separation between home and office. Feeling somewhat trapped, he decided to make a point of getting outside for an hour each day to exercise. This evolved into finding a group of friends to join him and taking turns planning the day's workout regimen.
“I was also launching the business, and I wanted to have clarity of mind and focus, and be in the best shape of my life spiritually and physically,” he says.
The “how” part is a little more complicated — but it starts with the same morning rituals. Each day, Geisz sets the foundation for what matters most in his life, which always comes back to family, faith and physical health. Before Geisz leaves his room in the morning, he does a daily bible reading and recites a handful of meaningful mantras. “Failure to prepare is preparing to fail” is one of them.
Push-ups are also incorporated into his daily routine. His physical goals constantly change depending on what event he's training for. But exercise has been a constant in his life for the last three years. There's no lapsing, he says. Discipline means being 100-percent consistent.
His rituals spill over into his business as well. Geisz uses an accountability score sheet daily, listing business-related tasks, including “client activities, prospecting activities, community and charity activities, giving introductions, marketing, learning, leading and developing and organization.
Each one is assigned a number of points. For example, he gets points when he meets a client face-to-face. When he supports a charity, he gets points. If he has a good or bad month with the business, he can go back and look at his point tally and see a correlation.
“I can tell you how many points I scored two weeks ago or last January. That's a big part of my success,” Geisz says. “I'm not the most successful guy by any stretch of the imagination, but I think, relatively speaking, I've done well, and I think a lot of it is probably just that consistency. I'm not the smartest guy in the room. I'm not the fastest guy, but I'm going to work. I'm going to outwork people, and I'm going to care.
“It's more than just work ethic,” he says. “It's caring. And I care enough to put the time in to create that spreadsheet, analyze it and change it. In my industry, there's a lot of opportunity. If you can be a good human being, listen to people, show you care about them, and deliver, you will succeed. That's not a difficult equation."

PLASTIC SURGERY IS BECOMING LESS TABOO — EVEN FOR MEN.
Often, when people think of plastic surgery, they think of reality TV stars and celebrities, but with the societal shift in the quest for a more natural result, plastic surgery is becoming more mainstream — even for men.
Dr. Julio Sosa is a board-certified plastic surgeon and for more than 20 years has been the owner and lead practitioner of Bloomfield Plastic Surgery, a boutique-style cosmetic surgery facility focused solely on patient-centered care for a variety of aesthetic and reconstructive needs. The practice works with women and men whose requests range from medical needs to personal aesthetic goals, and Sosa is known for consistently delivering aesthetically pleasing and natural-looking results.
Drawn to plastic and reconstructive surgery since early in his education, his passion is continually nurtured because of the wide variety of procedures and creative challenges that regularly arise in the industry. “I love the variety of procedures and creativity that goes along with being a plastic surgeon,” Sosa says. That means not only more options for men, but that men are feeling more comfortable partaking in these options.
“We offer a lot of services for men,” Sosa says. “Currently, the most common service is Emsculpt, which feels like a deep-tissue massage all while the body is building muscle and destroying fat cells.” While Botox and liposuction are common among men, Emsculpt has become a worthy contender, specifically for men — 25 percent of Sosa’s patients having this procedure are men. Although Emsculpt can be used to tone and define abs, arms, glutes and calves, the most popular areas for men are the abs, as the non-invasive, zero down time, pain-free procedure can be done in the office in just 30 minutes.
“Each 30-minute ab session of Emsculpt is equivalent to doing 20,000 crunches,” Sosa says. “It’s a more natural way to fine-tune the body compared to other options because it builds muscle and destroys fat cells much quicker than one could do on their own with diet and exercise.”
In addition to the non-surgical options like Emsculpt, Sosa also offers surgical services that are popular with men, including eyelid surgery to enhance the appearance of aging eyes and gynecomastia surgery to reduce the size of breast tissue in men. While there are common components to each of these surgeries, “no procedure is exactly the same” — the Sosa’s practice takes great pride in customizing each client’s care to fit their specific body and needs.
What do you buy for the man who has everything? Perhaps an experience oriented around what dads value most – time together – is just what he needs. Fathers and father figures are invaluable in our lives. They help shape and mold us. They’re there for us and support us. If you haven’t already planned something special, take a look at our list of ideas and circle your favorites. If you have kids, let them join in the fun too!
Whether you decide to spend a day at home or enjoy a day on the town, these innovative celebration ideas will include fun for the whole family and make Dad feel loved. Whatever activity or surprise you land on to show your dad, husband, brother or father figure your appreciation for all they do, the most important thing is that you all get to spend some quality time together.
Family heritage websites can offer insight into dad’s past and be an interesting way to study the history of your family. Present Dad with a report on his ancestors or dig in together!
You don’t need to go very far to have a great time with Dad! Explore a new neck of your own woods with a family staycation. You can go out on the town, stay at a fancy hotel and maybe even enjoy some room service!
Lay out a blanket in your backyard and grab your binoculars for a peaceful, naturefilled day. Make a list of how many different kinds of birds you see and guess if you can identify them.
Bowling is a timeless classic Dad is sure to enjoy. Bonus if the bowling alley has an arcade, chicken wings and Dad’s favorite beverage of choice.
Find a local frisbee golf course and grab a slot for the family to play. This activity is fun for both young and old and helps you take advantage of being in the beautiful outdoors together.
Breakfast in bed isn’t just for Mother’s Day. Dads can enjoy it too! Whip up some of his favorite brunch treats and start Father’s Day off the right way.
06 09
Sign up for an artistic experience at a local wine and paint shop so Dad can let his creative side show and you can have a custom piece of art for years to come.
Is Dad a hands-on guy? Why not spend the day constructing a tree house or painting a birdhouse? Or better yet, help him organize the garage or start a garage redesign.
Consider signing him up for a fitness class together. Whether he likes cycling, boxing or HIIT, encourage him to be adventurous and try something new.
12
08
There’s no greater way to get to a Dad’s heart than the word “barbecue”. Grab extravagant meats like a rack of ribs or wagyu beef burgers and go to town.
Harken back to Dad’s childhood with a specialty kit of legos. Embark on a family project of helping Dad build models of favorite movie props like the Death Star or Hogwarts castle.
07 10 11 13
If some of Dad’s role models include Gordon Ramsay and Bobby Flay, consider thinking outside the box and create a meal with something you wouldn’t usually go for like bison burgers or grilled octopus tentacles. Tackling a complex recipe may seem challenging but the memories and the meal will be worth it.
