Disgust at the amount of rubbish along the canal and river Calder in Ossett prompted couple to clean up the area Disgust at the amount of rubbish along the canal and river Calder in Ossett prompted a local couple to clean up the area. Many people have found the recent lockdown period difficult, but for an Ossett couple, lockdown was the catalyst for an activity that has got them noticed. Having enjoyed long distance walking since their retirement, Malcolm and Yvonne Hall found themselves confined to the local area for their daily walks. Used to trekking such walks as the Pennine Way and Coast to Coast Walk, their regular route now took them down Healy Road in Ossett and along the canal towards Thornhill, and they were left shocked by the amount of

litter they found along the way. Armed with a long reach grabber, or litter picker, and a good supply of bags, they made it their mission to clean up their local walking route. Just about every day since the country locked down, Malcolm and Yvonne took it upon themselves to pick up other people’s discarded litter and rubbish along the canal whilst they enjoyed their permitted daily exercise, and they have carried on after restrictions were lifted. Malcolm said. “It’s disgusting the amount of rubbish we sometimes pick up along our walk. Some people seem to have no regard for the environment or their local area. I can’t believe how much rubbish is just

thrown down, spoiling walks and the locality for other people”. The items they’ve found cast away on the sides of the river Calder and the canal

include the typical cans, bottles and barbeques, but also towels, clothing and underwear. “I just don’t understand why, if people can carry things

here, they don’t take home their rubbish and empties”, said Yvonne. The couple have become a regular sight litter-picking along the canal side, and the area is so much better for their efforts. Their selflessness and determination to keep this corner of their local area clean has earned them a nomination to be the recipients of the Wakefield Life’s first ever Big Thank You beautiful bouquet of flowers. “We didn’t expect any thanks for what we’re doing”, said Yvonne, “We do it because we want to see our local area clean, and it’s something constructive we can do while we’re walking… but it is nice to feel that it’s appreciated”.

A great day out for the whole family Last Monday we visited The Yorkshire Wildlife Park for a family day out. I’d never been before but the children had been on visits with school and were keen to go again. We booked online the week before – during COVID you need to book a time slot and these are hourly from early morning to 3.30pm. It took us 45 minutes to drive and straightforward to find

for our 1.30pm visit. The park was well organised and COVID secure with a one way system in operation and plenty of sanitising stations. Grandparents came too and they appreciated the regular eating and drinking places (toilets too) that are scattered around the park – and I am delighted to say they are participating in the government ‘eat out to help out’

scheme so it made our coffees and cakes even more delicious! We took a picnic and appreciated it sat undercover in a lovely canopy area. But of course the thing we enjoyed the most were the animals. The African animals were our favourite as it’s not every day you see a lion and even from afar they can be quite intimidating!

Such a wide range of beautiful animals though and great to see them in safe, spacious enclosures. The park strives to home many endangered and vulnerable animals and I couldn’t help but think that of all the home learning my two children had been doing these past months, nothing was as worthwhile or valuable as this experience.

The park is spread out so make sure you get your walking shoes on – you’ll get your daily steps up for a fun, healthy and educational day out at this Yorkshire highlight. Telephone: 01302 535057 Email: info@yorkshirewildlifepark.com

Charlotte’s Chicken Pie with a suet crust This chicken pie is my daughter’s favourite and I must admit it’s pretty delicious. It’s quite simple to make and I usually have a small amount of the filling left so I freeze it and then when someone just needs a meal for one I simply defrost it and just make the crust. You can add other ingredients to the filling, such as, peas and carrots but my kids are a bit fussy! Also, make a traditional pie top if you prefer – even get a ready roll shortcrust pastry to make things really simple. I’ve also done it before with a scone cobbler top. It’s a versatile recipe. Method: Cut the chicken into chunks and the bacon into pieces. Fry together in a large shallow pan.

Halve the mushrooms and add them to the chicken and bacon. Also add the tarragon. Everything should be well browned as this adds flavour. Sprinkle the flour over the ingredients in the pan and stir it so that it coats everything

stir the flour, suet and salt and pepper in a mixing bowl. Slowly add cold water and combine together to make a dough – I use a knife to do this as the dough sticks inside the spoon if not. The dough should be well combined and not too sticky so that when you roll it out it doesn’t stick to the rolling pin. If it is too sticky, just add more flour. Transfer the filling to a large pie dish and cover with the rolled dough and prick. Cook in the oven at 210*C for approx. 25 mins or until the crust is golden.

Baileys Chocolate Cheesecake A delicious Baileys cheesecake with a chocolate biscuit base and decorated with chocolate drizzle. Never fails to impress. This recipe makes a large cheesecake with 12 servings. Quantities can be halved and a smaller loose bottomed or spring-form tin used. Method: Put the biscuits into a plastic bag and thoroughly crush. Melt the butter and 100g of chocolate in the microwave or in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. If using a microwave, keep checking to ensure the chocolate doesn’t burn and if using a bowl over simmering water, ensure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. When the butter and chocolate have melted, stir in the crushed biscuits and mix thoroughly. Grease the base of a large spring-form tin (I use a 22cm diameter tin). Cut a piece of greaseproof paper a few

When the chocolate is to room temperature, drizzle over the top of the cheesecake in a fine criss-cross pattern. Try to avoid large dollops of chocolate as this will make cutting the cheesecake more difficult. Five Top Tips For Making A Will When you make a Will it’s important to consider who you want your assets to go to when you die. Often this will be to just one single person, such as your spouse, however with ‘blended families’ being ever more common it’s wise to give it some serious thought so that you are clear on who you want to be a beneficiary so that you don’t accidentally miss someone important out.

extra consideration might be wise. Perhaps you already given some money or other assets to your chosen beneficiaries and maybe this should that be brought into account? You might not think so but others may, so to avoid any conflict later down the line it’s important this is recorded. If it’s fairness you are looking for in the end then this all needs a little more thought.

Top Tip #1 – Think beyond the obvious.

Top Tip #3 – Name your beneficiaries, don’t label them.

When thinking about your assets, think beyond the obvious. Property, savings and investments are the likely assets that immediately spring to mind but don’t forget about the smaller items too. Who do you wish to receive the vintage watch that has been passed down through the family? And what about the cat? Although it may seem ridiculous now, when emotions are running high and family disputes are raging because people can’t decide who gets your fishing tackle they’ll wish that it’d all been made clear in your Will.

If you state in your Will to “leave it all in equal parts to my children” do you mean your children or do you mean your stepchildren too? Using the statement “my children” means only your biological children and omits any step-children. Be clear on what you want and to avoid any issues it’s wise to name your chosen beneficiaries.

Top Tip #2 – Maybe don’t split equally. When it comes to allocating your investments it’s easy to say “split it equally between x, y and z” but a bit of

Top Tip #5 – Make your wishes known. There is an increase in challenges to Wills because the outcome isn’t always as expected and some family members might disagree with the contents of the Will. At that point it’s too late for you to explain your reasons so, when making a Will, make your wishes known to your family so that they can understand your rationale for your decisions. It will make

for a much easier and peaceful time in the future. Of course there are many more important things to consider when making a Will which is why using a solicitor is the best way to ensure that it's done right. Information and article courtesy of Jessica Orme at Thornton Jones Solicitors, www.thorntonjones.co.uk

Top Tip #4 – Consider nonfamily beneficiaries. You may immediately think that the beneficiaries need to be the people closest to you but this isn’t the case. You have the right to choose who receives part or all of your estate. Perhaps you wish to leave something to a charity, or to a friend who has been a pivotal part of your life.

WAKEFIELD Life Money Matters £5000 worth of vouchers to be made available for insulation and double glazing with a New Green Home Grant Vouchers worth up to £5,000 will be issued to homeowners in England to make their homes more energy efficient under a new Government scheme that launches in September here's what we know about the scheme after a new update on 4 August. As part of the Green Homes Grant scheme, eligible homeowners will be able to use the vouchers to help pay for environmentally friendly improvements such as installing loft, floor and wall insulation or replacing single glazing with double-glazing. Chancellor Rishi Sunak outlined the plans, which will see the Government put aside £2 billion for green home upgrades, as part of his economic statement in July. And the Government has now released more details about what the vouchers will cover and who's eligible.

If you already have these measures installed in your home, you can use the vouchers to install "top ups" - for example, additional loft insulation so it reaches the recommended level - but not to replace what you already have. The Government also adds that if you're installing low carbon heating, you'll also need to have adequate insulation in your home, though this can be installed at the same time as the heating. Then if, and only if, you're installing at least one of the improvements above, you'll also be able to use the vouchers to install the following "secondary" measures:

But those on low incomes will be able to get more – in that case the Government will cover the full cost of the energy efficient improvements, so you won't have to pay anything, and the vouchers could be worth up to £10,000 per household. Of course, green improvements such as insulation can also help cut your energy bills, with the Government saying families could be able to save hundreds of pounds a year as a result.

Will anyone be able to get these vouchers?

As of 4 August, the Government has confirmed that all owner-occupied homes (including long-leaseholders and shared ownership properties) will be eligible to use the general £5,000 voucher scheme - though it's likely leaseholders and those with a share-ofDraught proofing freehold type lease will need to get Double or triple glazing, or secondary permission from the (other) How will the Green glazing, but only if you currently have freeholder(s) before making any single glazing, it won't cover Homes Grant work? changes that affect the building. How can I apply for a voucher? The Government says that homeowners will be able to access advice and support from the Simple Energy Advice service (SEA) about making their homes more energy efficient from "later this month" (August). The SEA service will then suggest home improvements that homeowners could apply for funding support for, and homeowners will be offered a list of approved registered tradespeople in their area to carry out the work. Once the work is agreed, vouchers will start to be issued from "the end of September".

Will any firm be able to do this – or is it just specific installers? The Government says households will be offered a list of accredited local tradespeople in their area who are registered with the scheme to carry out the work. To be part of the scheme, tradespeople must register for TrustMark or Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) accreditation. This issues restaurant review... The Kingfisher

During lockdown the one place I missed, the one place I really wanted to visit – was The Kingfisher. I have been going there since I was a little girl and it is the one restaurant we regularly frequent as family, three generations together. Therefore, it was the first place we all visited when restaurants reopened. I’ll admit it, I was quite anxious about the experience as like I’ve mentioned I have been going to The Kingfisher for many years and I thought it might feel like a completely new experience, a bit alien. I was wrong. Yes, there were fewer tables, fewer people (it’s normally very busy and people wait for tables at the door) but everything was actually wonderfully familiar. The waitresses at The Kingfisher are always welcoming and if they were feeling nervous they

definitely did not show it and the service was as prompt and friendly as usual. Although The Kingfisher serves mains other than fish n’ chips (prawn salad, scampi, poached salmon, Pukka pies etc.) it is always the nation’s staple that I favour. And it delivered. I refused other take-away fish n’ chips for many weeks because I knew the first time I came back to them after months of lockdown it would have to be from here. Crispy, light batter, flaky haddock, golden chips and mushy pies all eaten gratefully with a slice of bread and a cup of tea! Thank-you Kingfisher – it was worth the wait. I felt safe, full and satisfied.

Cost of my meal (fish n chips, bread n butter and a cup of tea) - £9.70. Mushy peas - £1.80 My children – free with every adult meal. Just drinks and sides extra. My parents’ OAP meal includes a dessert too - £8.75 (jam roly poly is always a winner) AND, I’m pleased to say The kingfisher is participating in the eat out to help out scheme Mon – Wed. Walking Football is alive and kicking in Wakefield!

Wakefield may not have a professional football team but it certainly has a growing and increasingly popular Walking Football team which is aimed at the 50+ age group. Walking Football in Wakefield started in 2014 under a Council led initiative “SportyMates” that had received funding to encourage people in the 50+ age to play sports and help retain fitness and improve mobility. A weekly session took place at Wakefield Football Centre (WFC) - an indoor facility at Biz Space just off Denby Dale Road and it grew in popularity from an initial attendance of 6 players at the very first session. Current Club Secretary Niall ODonnell takes up the story... “I attended a few weeks after the first session to join the 6 players who were all enthusiastic and happy to be able to have a kick about - we did a few exercises and then had a small game and after that I was hooked. I started to attend each week and we all tried to bring a mate down to expand the numbers but we stalled at about 10 regulars. We then invited the Wakefield Express down to take a picture and do an article and that immediately increased the attendees at the next session. We acquired some new players and through a SportyMates link in 2015 found ourselves representing Leeds United in a local competition that we won which then placed us in a National Tournament at St George's Park where we played the best teams in the country and were unlucky to lose out on the medals. The “Sportymates” support was withdrawn in Jan 2016 and a small group of us decided to set up a Wakefield Walking Football Club (WWFC) to continue to play. We received some financial assistance from the Council to allow us to get bibs, balls and insurance and we then formed a committee of volunteers who run the club. We arrange the club sessions and organise teams who enter leagues and

competitions for an increasing age range of players and since 2016 we have expanded the number of sessions from 1 a week to 4 a week with 3 social lunchtime sessions and 1 evening session geared at the competition players. Initially tournaments were aimed at 50+ but it soon became apparent that teams could field a complete team aged 60+, 65+ and now increasingly 70+ players and we have entered teams very successfully in a number of events. We were invited to enter the 60+ Greater Manchester Walking Football League after winning a cup competition in Heywood in 2016. We joined in Div 3 which we won, we progressed straight through Div2 and then have won and retained Div1. Since 2016 we have gone from strength to strength - we have played at Bradford City in front of 17,000 spectators as the half time entertainment, we have won leagues and trophies and at Dec 2019 we had 100 members and 30 players attending each of the lunchtime sessions (Mon, Wed,Fri ) that we played at WFC. COVID-19 and lockdown have of course impacted us and we have not yet been able to use the indoor facilities at WFC but we have started to run regular fitness sessions at Thornes Park where an increasing number are now starting to get back into a playing routine. All our updates appear on Facebook under Wakefield Walking Football - Like the page to get all the session reports and if anyone is interested in playing and having a go feel free to contact me online or via Facebook.

Disgust at the amount of rubbish along the canal and river Calder in Ossett prompted couple to clean up the area Disgust at the amount of rubbish along the canal and river Calder in Ossett prompted couple to clean up the area Many people have found the recent lockdown period difficult, but for an Ossett couple, lockdown was the catalyst for an activity that has got them noticed.

Recently published book shows how different Wakefield looked 400 years ago Until the 1950s Wakefield was a city with many timber framed buildings, richly decorated with carvings. In the late 1950s/early 1960s almost all was swept away in redevelopment of the town centre. At the time a teenage Peter Brears was recording buildings as they were demolished and saving carvings and plaster mouldings for Wakefield’s City Museum. In ‘The Buildings of Tudor and Stuart Wakefield’ Peter provides his own meticulously detailed drawings and paintings reconstructing Wakefield’s lost buildings.

“The medieval woollen trade moved from old established towns like York, with their rules and regulations, to newer towns like Wakefield in the 16th century,” says author Peter Brears. “In the 16th century and early 17th century Wakefield became the regional centre of the woollen trade. With the money that the trade brought in the town developed half timber and stone inns, shops, houses and warehouses of the finest design and craftsmanship. “ Peter, who is Wakefield born and bred, has had a long and varied career as archaeologist, historic

building specialist and food historian. For over thirty years he has worked in English museums and great houses. He was curator of Shibden Hall and Clarke Hall before moving on to direct the Castle Museum, York and Leeds City Museum. He has specialised in the study of domestic life,

and has done research, restoration and interpretation projects for many properties including Hampton Court Palace and Harewood House.
