M&S to relocate its town centre store to out-of-town retail park Marks & Spencer has confirmed the closure of its Barnsley town centre store with plans underway to relocate as a M&S Foodhall to the Peel Retail Park on Harborough Hills. It has been reported that existing staff will be offered jobs with the new M&S Foodhall. Matt Graham, regional manager for M&S, said: “We’re excited to be opening a brand-new M&S Foodhall in the Peel Retail Park near Harborough Hill Road, which will offer local customers 60% more Foodhall space than our current store. We expect that the new store will be ready to open in early 2023. “Shopping habits are changing, so we’re reshaping our store estate to make sure we have the right stores to offer our customers an

excellent shopping experience. This means in line with our Foodhall expansion, our existing store at 7 Queen Street will close once the development is complete. "We appreciate this will be disappointing news for some, but we believe this is the right decision to ensure the best possible offer for customers in Barnsley. We will keep the community updated as the works progress.” Councillor Sir Steve Houghton CBE, leader of Barnsley Council has said they are “sorry that the M&S store on Queen Street will be closing” but that they are “delighted that M&S is investing in a new store in Barnsley”, providing a wider food offer, employing more staff and enhancing the customer experience. Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis commented on the news via his social

media accounts. He said, “It is of course very disappointing to hear this news – not least because of the massive improvements we’ve recently seen to our town centre. The Marks and Spencer on Queen St is a much loved and well used store and I’ll be looking very closely at the detail of the new offer at Peel

Retail Park to make sure local folk are not being short changed. I’ve already been in touch with M&S and will be speaking to them again to discuss the implications of this decision on our town centre and seeing what they can do to make sure nobody loses out with this move.”

Hospice golf day raises £7,000 for patient care Friday May 13 proved lucky for Barnsley Hospice, as an annual golf day raised £7,000 to fund patient care. Twenty-two teams played in the Golf Day, held at Silkstone Golf Club, and Barnsley FC legend Barry Murphy put in an appearance to support the day. The teams competed for the winner’s trophy, and ‘Kitch’s Klowns’ were crowned champions at the pie and peas supper that followed the 18 holes. Isabel Hartland, interim director of

finance and income generation at Barnsley Hospice, was delighted with the amount raised: “Our Golf Day has been going for over 20 years, and it is a firm favourite with staff and supporters. “As a charity, we rely on events such as our golf day to raise almost £2 million each year. This money supports our aim of ensuring palliative and end-of-life care is available for adults across Barnsley. “Our thanks go to everyone who attended

on the day, the event sponsors and Silkstone Golf Club.” The event was sponsored by Dodworth-based company, Lifetime. Lifetime director William Bottomley said: “It was another fantastic day, superbly organised, and enjoyed by everyone. Lifetime is proud to have such a close relationship with the hospice and we are delighted to play our part in helping them raise funds.” Stay tuned for news on next year’s event!

Group of Barnsley FC supporters score fundraising goal for Barnsley Hospice

A group of dedicated Barnsley Football Club fans have raised £5,000 for Barnsley Hospice by raffling football memorabilia. In October 2020, Mark Oldfield was one of five lifelong Barnsley Football Club fans who founded Facebook group ‘The Real Barnsley FC Supporters’. The group has grown to over 450 members and is designed to bring together passionate supporters. It was not long before members decided to join together and use the group to raise money for the hospice.

Throughout the last eighteen months, Mark has asked local football fans to look for items in their attic, and has spent hours scouring the internet for the perfect prizes. Standout pieces include a match ball from 1996, which was just before Barnsley FC were promoted. Barnsley Hospice’s corporate fundraiser Simon Atkinson spent the afternoon with Mark at Oakwell, to celebrate the fantastic donation the group had made. Simon said: “We rely so much on

the support of groups like ‘The Real Barnsley FC Supporters’ to raise funds to support the specialist services we provide. “It was a pleasure to mark this fantastic achievement at Oakwell – a place that we know means so much to the group. We can’t thank them enough for their support.” If you would like to share your fundraising story, please email our Marketing and Communications manager at ella.beale@barnsleyhospice.org.

Unique Egyptian Exhibition to Mark 100 Years Since Discovery of Tutankhamen’s Tomb

Follow us on Facebook

With this year marking the centenary of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen in 1922, Barnsley is set to celebrate with a unique exhibition. A new exhibition, TUT22: from Cradle to Grave, will open at Experience Barnsley in October to reveal why this part of Yorkshire is such an important ancient Egyptian outpost. Curated by Barnsleyborn Egyptologist Prof Joann Fletcher, and over two years in the planning, ‘TUT22: from Cradle to Grave’ explores Tutankhamen’s life during the 14th century BC. The exhibition will blend traditional artefacts with mesmerising new technologies to lift the lid on the greatest archaeological discovery of all time. It will also tell the story of local people involved in the rediscovery of the famous ‘boy king’. “We’ll be resurrecting the world of Tutankhamen using artefacts from Amarna, the city where he was born and raised,” explained Joann. “It will be a sensory, immersive experience using augmented reality to tell the story of Tutankhamen from cradle to grave.” Focusing on Tutankhamen’s birthplace, the exhibition features more than 250 ancient artefacts, including some never displayed before. These are being loaned by Bolton Museum’s renowned Egyptian collection, first assembled by curators William and Thomas Midgley whose family came from Cawthorne, Barnsley. The exhibition also incorporates the work of Barnsley-born artist-

turned-archaeologist Harold Jones, whose excavations in the Valley of the Kings uncovered some of the first clues to the location of Tutankhamen’s tomb which was eventually discovered by Jones’ friends Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter. Jones, Carter and the Midgleys also share links to the artists and antiquarians within the Spencer-Stanhope family of Barnsley’s Cannon Hall. Finds made by the Egypt Exploration Society and sent to Bolton under the stewardship of the Midgleys, the first curators of Bolton Museum, will be showcased as part of the exhibition. “We’ll be combining digital technology and the results of scientific research to really bring the world of Tutankhamen back to life,” added Joann. “This collaboration between Bolton Museum and Barnsley Museums is unique. “There are incredible links to Barnsley and stories that have never been told. It’s a local history story as well as an international story and it really will help us mark the centenary in a very special way.” More details about TUT22: from Cradle to Grave, which will run from October 22 to March 18 2023, will be shared later this summer. For full details of the current exhibition programme please visit www.barnsleymuseums.com

La Fortezza

BARNSLEY Life restaurant review

A recently renovated Italian restaurant set in a stunning location on the outskirts of Barnsley

La Fortezza has been a small traditional Italian restaurant in Newmillerdam for many years but more recently they have expanded in to a modern timber extension with floor to ceiling windows and doors that open on to a smart decked seating area for warmer months. Marble topped tables with comfortable tan leather chairs finish the look and the result is a light, airy space that feels contemporary and stylish. If you are not familiar with Newmillerdam itself it is a village located about midway between Barnsley and Wakefield, dominated by a large lake and country park. I have been a regular visitor to the area since I was a child, enjoying feeding the ducks, walking the dog and having a coke and packet of crisps outside one of the pubs. Back to La Fortezza… The four of us visited one warm Thursday evening. It was busy so it was a good thing I had booked. The older part of the restaurant still seats people but I was pleased we were in the new bit – the waitress said to mention where you’d prefer to sit when you book and they will try their best. The service throughout was friendly and very efficient – these people know what they’re doing! The menu is typically rustic Italian with probably something to suit most people. For starters, or should I say antipasti I had king prawns cooked in garlic butter, saffron, parsley and white wine which was served with Italian bread (£8.75) – one of the best king prawn starters I have had, amazing! My son had deep fried rice filled with spinach and mozzarella, served with Napoli sauce, truffle mayo and extra virgin olive oil with balsamic vinegar dressing (£7.95).

He absolutely loved it and would have it again. My daughter had mixed marinated olives with bread (£4.25) and my husband had garlic pizza bread with tomato sauce (£5.50) – that was so tasty. We were off to a good start! Other antipasti include slow cooked baby ribs, calamari, pate and creamy garlic mushrooms with pancetta and parmesan. Our main courses didn’t disappoint either; my husband and son both chose the salmon tagliatelle (£13.95) and said it was so delicious and surprisingly light, in fact one of the best pasta dishes they’d ever had – high praise indeed! My daughter virtually licked the dish of her spaghetti and Napoli sauce (£9.25) whilst I had pizza – handmade and loaded with mushrooms, salami, pepperoni, ham, roasted peppers and red onion (£12.95). As well as pizzas and pasta there are also a selection of steak and chicken dishes; next time I’m going to choose the chicken breast cooked with king and baby prawns, Napoli sauce, cream, a dash of peach schnapps and a hint of chilli. Apparently it’s served with a touch of love which sounds good to me! Regrettably we didn’t have room for dessert but at £5.95 each I might go lighter on the main course next time; affogato, tiramisu, lemon torte and cheesecake – Mmmm decisions… There’s a children’s menu too; £6.95 for two courses or £7.95 for three. Honestly, this Italian feels a little bit more swish than traditional restaurants; the food is fresh and delicious served in a stylish restaurant in a picturesque village – a winning combination and remember to ask for a table in the conservatory!

Penny Pie Park transformation reaches final stages The new, improved community park facilities provided as part of the A628 Dodworth Road improvement scheme are now almost complete, with the final landscaping bringing the new outdoor spaces to life. The council worked with tree specialists and landscape architects to identify suitable trees to be preserved by transplanting them further within the park rather than removing them. This has provided a total of 243 trees in Penny Pie Park after completion of the works, with an actual net gain of four trees.

In the new play area, visitors will benefit from a brand-new play area catering for all children, including accessible, inclusive play equipment. This also includes a full-sized, multi-use games area alongside the recycled and relocated outdoor fit gym. The landscaping has included new grassed areas, with tons of topsoil also being provided using the council's own production facilities at the Smithies Depot in Barnsley. This has been an environmentally friendly initiative helping to reduce costs. An impressive gated

entrance, new signage, notice boards, and new railings provide a safe and welcoming new facility for residents of all ages to enjoy. It’s exciting for people to try the new facilities, but as the final stages are entered, it is important for residents' own safety that people do not enter closed-off areas or try the equipment just yet. As work progresses on the final stages of the project , the grassed areas are now taking shape thanks to the recent sun and rain. Further announcements about opening will soon be made.

Barnsley Council to restrict unhealthy food and drink advertising

We’ve introduced a High Fat Salt or Sugar (HFSS) Policy Guidance Note to restrict unhealthy food and drink advertising. This serves to protect children and adults from exposure to HFSS advertising, which can influence what people eat and drink, as well as how much. The guidance note is an addition to our Advertising and Sponsorship Policy and follows similar policies adopted by Bristol City Council and several London boroughs. It will restrict the advertising of HFSS products on all councilowned or leased advertising sites. London School of Hygiene

& Tropical Medicine research showed that a similar policy on the Transport for London (TfL) network worked well. There was an estimated 6.7 per cent decrease in average weekly household purchases of energy from HFSS products, and the average weekly purchases of chocolate and sweets fell by 19.4 per cent. Our guidance note for Barnsley has been developed with support from the food charity, Sustain, who advised the Mayor of London’s team on the TfL policy and has been working with over 80 local authorities across the country to introduce local

healthier advertising policies. Julia Burrows, Director of Public Health, said: “We want everyone in Barnsley to have the best possible chance of enjoying life in good physical and mental health. This guidance note is just one element of what we’re doing to make it easier to be healthy.” “We’re working with businesses who already advertise with us and will work collaboratively with any future businesses to make sure they can advertise healthy food and drink with us. We’re hoping this will be the first step in other organisations in Barnsley adopting a similar policy.”

Household Waste Recycling Centres Consultation Residents and businesses are invited to give feedback on the Household Waste Recycling Centres by taking part in a consultation. The current contract to manage and run the centres across Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham is due to end in October 2023. The three councils are inviting residents' opinions on how the current service is run and where any improvements can be made. This will help to understand what changes if any can be made to improve the service from October 2023 onwards. Opinions are also sought from local businesses on their waste disposal needs. The survey will be open from Monday 6 June to Sunday 31 July 2022 and

will take about 10 minutes to complete. If you are unable to complete the survey online, paper copies can be obtained at any of our HWRCs, as well as Library @ The Lightbox, Barnsley, Goldthorpe Library, Penistone Library and Wombwell Library. Cllr James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for

Environment and Transport said: “Recycling and reducing waste is a really important part of protecting our environment. We want to encourage people to recycle wherever possible and our Household Waste Recycling Centres are integral to how we achieve that. "We want to hear from residents about how we can continue to improve the service even further. “Please take a moment to fill in the survey which can be found at Barnsley.gov.uk/HaveYou rSay”

NEW ALL-AGE MENTAL HEALTH STRATEGY LAUNCHES IN BARNSLEY Barnsley's Health and Wellbeing Board has approved a new allage Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy for 20222026. The new strategy will help to make sure that Barnsley has the support and culture to enable everyone within the borough to achieve their potential. We want everyone in Barnsley to have a good life. This means everything from a quality place to call home, to good physical and mental wellbeing and a sense of self-worth through diverse and secure employment opportunities. It is also about having access to the best possible local facilities in a community that values our people and our town. This means that all residents of Barnsley will be able to enjoy those things that help them feel positive about their lives, along with access to high-quality support and compassionate local services when they need them. The refreshed strategy is split into three key areas: starting well, living well, and ageing well. It sets out a vision to provide early help, support, advice, and services to anyone struggling with poor mental health at every point in their lives.

It uses a range of sources, including the Barnsley Joint Strategic Needs Assessment and the Public Health Outcomes Framework. Barnsley residents' voices have been used to inform the strategy. This includes the 'A Day in the Life of' research, Children and Young People's

Emotional Health and Wellbeing survey, and the Barnsley 2030 consultation. Cllr Caroline Makinson, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, said: "We want everyone in Barnsley to have the best possible chance of enjoying life in good physical and mental health.

Our health and social care services are coming together so you can get the right care and support you need. We're really pleased to have worked with partners in the Mental Health Partnership to create this strategy to improve mental health for everyone in Barnsley." Dr Nick Balac, Chair of Barnsley

CCG, said: "We know that COVID-19 has highlighted and increased health inequalities in Barnsley. We want to make sure Barnsley's recovery from COVID-19 is fair for everyone. With a strong focus on mental health we can help to ensure our town is a great place to live for everyone."

HOME VISITS Are you struggling with your eyes, vision or glasses but unable to attend a Specsavers store to get checked? Did you know Specsavers can bring the test to you? If you meet the criteria to qualify the Specsavers Home Visiting team can visit you and conduct your eye test in the comfort of your own home.

You will qualify for a home eye test if you are unable to get to a store unaccompanied due to a medical condition and fall into one of the following categories: • Over 60 • Under 16 • In full time education aged 16, 17 or 18 • Receive benefits such as Income Support, Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseekers Allowance, Universal Credit • Diabetic • Over 40 with a family history of glaucoma As a front line service supporting the NHS we are still operating despite the Covid19 pandemic. All our teams are equipped with full PPE and will always enter your home wearing this. We are an experienced team. Our two directors are Mel Wilson (Ophthalmic Director) and Emma Taylor (Customer Service Director). Mel qualified as an optometrist in 1998 and has worked in store for large chains and independent businesses. She found her passion for domiciliary work 4 years ago and has been part of the home visiting team ever since. Emma is a qualified dispensing optician and, like Mel, is very experienced having worked in the industry for 13 years both in store and, more recently dedicating herself to the domiciliary team. Emma and Mel are passionate about their work and, along with their team of friendly,

knowledgeable optical assistants, are committed to helping people in the community. We often get asked how a home visit test works. And it’s really quite straightforward! Firstly, a full general health history is taken. We then take a look at your existing glasses so we can check the current prescription. This helps us understand a little more about you and compare your current prescription to your new one. We perform a range of eye health tests including the glaucoma test and a health check of the front and back of the eye. Next, we start to understand if your prescription has changed. This process is quite similar to what you will have had done in store. We use a trial frame a and range of lenses to check how well you can see the test chart. Our test chart, though, is on a tablet!

Mel Wilson Once this has been completed we can then make recommendations taking into account your home situation and visual requirements. We have a large selection of frames some of which you will see in store and some of which are domiciliary specific. Our offers and pricing are also the same as in store. Our testing kit has a range of low vision equipment and we’re are happy to demonstrate how this works and could benefit you. This includes low visions aides for both distance near vision. Once you have chosen your new glasses, they are placed on order and generally delivered and fitted within 14 days. A full at home aftercare service is available so we can look after you and your glasses between appointments!

If you feel you qualify for a home visit or want any more details, please call us on 01226 982517 where Christina or Kelly will take your call in our Barnsley based office.

A hidden gem Just a little note to let you all know (if you don’t already) about The Magic Wood Café – a surprising treat for anyone in

Bridge and walked along the new path towards Penistone. There’s a lot of construction work happening here at the moment as they are removing all overhead cables and burying need of refreshments along the them underground to improve TransPennine trail. the aesthetics of the area – it’s One Saturday morning, my husband and I parked at Dunford part of The National Grid’s Visual

Impact Project in the Peak District. The work didn’t detract from our enjoyment of the walk and particularly as we stumbled across a horse box selling a good selection of refreshments, The Magic Wood Café. It’s about the Hazlehead point of the trail, halfway between Thurlstone and

Dunford Bridge and talking to people it appeared many were regular visitors and walked or rode the trail to take advantage of this little gem selling hot and cold sandwiches, drinks, confectionary and cakes. There’s some sheltered seating to rest comfortably and I had an ice-lolly whilst my husband had a hot dog and pop. He was impressed with the quality of the food and went back a week later whilst out for a bike ride with a friend – I think that was an excuse for a sausage sandwich! Telephone:

Maintaining your financial health during cost of living crisis

The cost of living crisis sweeping the UK and the rest of the world has brought the need to have control over your finances into even sharper focus. But just what is a cost of living crisis? Why is it happening right now? And are you concerned how it is impacting on you? Such an event materialises when the prices of everyday essentials, such as heating costs, food and fuel, rise faster than average household incomes. The increase in the costs of everyday goods is measured by inflation. Inflation is typically a broad measure, showing the overall increase in prices or the cost of living in a country. In April of this year, inflation in the UK hit yet another high of 9 per cent, meaning that the cost of everyday goods is now 9 per cent higher than the same time in 2021. And that figure threatens to go higher. The current cost of living crisis is particularly acute because a variety of different pressures are pushing up the rate of inflation. This means your bills are higher across the board, from food to petrol to energy.

Some of the factors driving the current spike in prices include: • High demand for oil and gas since the beginning of 2021 • Uncertainty over supply due to the Ukraine conflict • Shortages in staff across a number of sectors including hospitality and transport • Shortages of some goods due to supply chain disruptions across the globe The impact of such a crisis are being felt right across the world. Turkey, for example, saw its inflation rate soar past 73% in May 2022. Unsurprisingly, the usual suspects were involved – food and energy costs. Government policies can have an impact. In France a 4 per cent cap on energy meant that household energy bills have only risen by a maximum of 4 per cent, forcing state-owned energy company EDF to bear the brunt of increased purchase costs. In the UK meanwhile, the energy price cap rose by 54% in April, adding hundreds of pounds to monthly energy bills for millions of households. And in June the average cost of

filling a typical family car with petrol exceeded £100. A staggering rise! Times are tough. We acknowledge and appreciate that. So it is vitally important to have a clear, undiluted understanding of your own financial situation. There has never been a more important time to fully understand what your money can and can’t do for you. There may be a temptation, if money is particularly tight, to consider dipping into any savings you may have, take out credit, cancel any protection policies, or even withdraw from your workplace pension. We would urge caution. It is crucial that you have a full understanding of your financial situation, and the benefits and reassurance that things like a pension or an insurance policy can bring, before making any big decision. Do you know, exactly, where your money goes? Do you know, with certainty and clarity, the areas where you could perhaps save money, so that it can be utilised elsewhere? It is important to have your financial house in order. Have you a

list of all your current incomings and outgoings? The list should include all regular, fixed costs such as your mortgage or rent, insurance, council tax, utility/phone bills and so on. Remember to include items that crop up only once or twice a year, such as your TV licence, car MOT and servicing, as well as holidays. With these figures in front of you, even if you can’t divert extra cash into a savings fund, you may be able to discover where and when you could cut back on things. ‘Will I be ok? Do I have enough?’ Those are the sorts of questions that can bring worry and stress if you don’t know the answer! For many people, financial worries directly impact their daily life – whether that is at home or at work. By having a flexible financial plan you may be able to offset all those feelings of anxiety, and in doing so make good financial decisions, rather than merely guessing. Money is an important subject. It can play a key part in how you live your life, now and in the future. Sometimes it can feel great to ‘fly by

the seat of your pants’ – and letting things ‘just happen’. But not where your money is concerned! Knowing what you are going to need will enable you to live your life as you want, and will give you the power to achieve your plan, without having to say… ‘oh, if only I’d known!’ If you are feeling concerned about your finances then have that conversation with a professional. That chat could in turn lead to welcome guidance and invaluable advice. Lifetime has been named Workplace Financial Wellbeing Champion of the Year (UK) for 2022. We passionately believe that people should have access to help, guidance, education, support and advice. We can provide a visual picture of exactly where you stand when it comes to your money. The times are uncertain. Lifetime’s commitment to your financial health is not. Thank you for reading.

New Group adds to Dementia Services available at Age UK Barnsley Age UK Barnsley has been involved in raising the profile of Dementia Services in Barnsley for a number of years. Whether that’s providing dementia friendly day care at its Queens Road base or working to encourage local shops and businesses to become ‘Dementia Friendly’ by adopting simple changes to what they do and how they do it, Age UK Barnsley has been keen to take part to help those living with dementia, and their carers. Why is this important in Barnsley? Recent figures from the Alzheimer’s Society show that an estimated 2.996 people over 65 are living with dementia in Barnsley and that this will increase to 4,810 by 2030. Age UK Barnsley believe that doing nothing is not an option. With this in mind, in addition to their day care, information and advice, befriending and social inclusion projects and Access Barnsley Service, Age UK

Barnsley has just started a new dementia service – Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (MCST). What is it? MCST provides sessions which aim to actively stimulate and engage people living with dementia in a learning, fun and social environment. It is an evidence-based treatment, recommended by NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence), to improve cognition, independence and wellbeing for people living with mild to moderate dementia. MCST activities include: Discussions; Word Games; Quizzes; Physical Activities; Creative & Musical Activities. These are activities proven to help maintain memory and mental function.

Sessions are free and are 90 minutes in length on a weekly basis for a total of 24 weeks. Groups are available in both central Barnsley and Penistone. Jane Holliday, Age UK Barnsley CEO had this to say: ‘We take our role in helping people living with dementia very seriously and we are part of the Barnsley Third

Sector Dementia Alliance working alongside other organisations operating locally. The addition of our MCST sessions to what is already available is another step forward for dementia services in Barnsley.’ To register your interest in the MCST sessions please contact Age UK Barnsley. Email:

Stunning Digital Reconstruction Reveals Yorkshire Village’s Remarkable Industrial Past

The Victorian past of Elsecar, the model industrial village at the heart of South Yorkshire, has been brought to life in a stunning new digital reconstruction and animation. Thanks to the efforts of local volunteer historians, national experts and the expertise of a skilled digital creator, visitors can now experience what the village was like 140 years ago. An international centre of iron and coal, the village was built by the aristocrats of Wentworth Woodhouse, who showed it off to visiting aristocrats and Royalty. Cutting-edge digital technology has reimagined busy ironworks, collieries, canal boats, long-gone smoky chimneys and vividly captured street scenes. Visitors will be transported back to a time when Elsecar’s iron and coal was sent all around the world. Elsecar was famed for its bridges and even made armour for HMS Warrior, the Royal Navy’s first iron-clad battleship. The village is also home to the world’s oldest steam engine still in its original location. Built in 1795 at the New Colliery, it features on the new animation. The model’s incredible detail and historical accuracy is expected to inspire people by its innovative technology and the engineering

excellence of a bygone age, thanks to hundreds of hours of painstaking effort and the support of Historic England. Elsecar was one of the first Heritage Action Zone schemes in the country, set up by Historic England to unleash the power of the historic environment to create economic growth and improve quality of life. As part of the Heritage Action Zone, local volunteers worked with expert historians, archaeologists and investigators to research and support understanding of Elsecars’ past, declaring it to be of international importance through research done during the project. Many of its buildings are now Grade II* listed and new Scheduled Ancient Monuments have been designated. The historic buildings at the centre of the village are now one of South Yorkshire’s most popular visitor attractions, attracting over 500,000 visitors each year, providing a home to 40 independent businesses and hosting major events and festivals. The lasting legacy of the Heritage Action Zone is supporting plans for growth and recovery based on heritage and culture. The project is also a legacy of the Great Place partnership between Elsecar and Wentworth Woodhouse, which

celebrated the close historic ties between the two sites, supported by Arts Council England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Over the last year, digital creator Martin Moss of Dextra Visual has completed the new animation: Martin said: ‘Elsecar has an extraordinary story. It’s been a privilege to bring the village of 1880 back to life. People have been so emotional seeing what their village used to be like, connecting them to their ancestors and what their world was like.’ Dave Went, Historical Investigator for Historic England, said: ‘The sheer size and detail of this digital model is immense. It really does capture what a special, distinctive and carefully designed village Elsecar was.’ Councillor Robert Frost, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: ‘Elsecar holds a special place in people’s hearts and it’s incredible that its past is now so visible in the present. We look forward to sharing this incredible film with visitors, as they come to see what an astonishing place Elsecar is now, and witness the exciting changes we have planned for the future.’ Everyone can now watch the new film in ultra-high definition on a giant screen at Elsecar.

Bank of England increases base rate to 1.25% – what the rise means for your mortgage and savings

The Bank of England has increased base rates to 1.25% from 1% after the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted in favour of a rise. The base rate is used by the central bank to charge other banks and lenders when they borrow money – and influences what borrowers pay and savers earn. The rise follows predictions from the Bank of England that inflation could hit around 10% or even higher later in the year, although it did also predict rates would eventually start to fall back by next year. Inflation stood at 9% in the 12 months to April 2022, according to the most recent figures from the Office for National Statistics. The increase means it is the fifth time in quick succession that the central bank has increased rates after it first lifted them to 0.25% from 0.1% in

I'm a saver. What happens now? The base rate increase could affect all types of savings accounts. In general, savers benefit from base rate rises – although most savings rates are still relatively poor and rates didn't go up much after the last rise. Financial watchdog tells lenders to treat borrowers better as the cost of living crisis worsens - here's all you need to know The financial regulator has told lenders that they must ensure they are not overcharging customers and are treating them fairly as the cost of living crisis worsens. In a letter sent to 3,500 lenders, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) said that, while it found examples of borrowers being treated correctly, it is concerned that customers in more vulnerable circumstances are not getting the support they need and that several lenders are failing to discuss the benefits of money guidance or free debt advice. The regulator said it had seen failing across the lending sector but that more serious problems were found at more than 30 firms, largely in the consumer credit sector. We asked the FCA for a list of these firms but it did not want to do so. If you're struggling with debt and are thinking of borrowing money, see the Debt problems guide on MSE website for more information or the Cost of living guide for money tips and guidance. Remember to carefully assess your situation as you'll still need to pay back the money you borrow.

- Consider what more they can do to encourage mortgage borrowers to think about switching to a less costly option where it is available. - Help consumers avoid falling victim to scams or illegal money lending. If you're considering borrowing, use the MSE Loans eligibility calculator on their website to see how much you could get. Remember, if you have extreme debts, a formal debt solution – bankruptcy, individual voluntary arrangement or debt relief order may be the only way back. It's not a step to be taken lightly, and you should ALWAYS seek debt advice first.

2. Pension Credit's a naff name for what's simply an income 'top-up' payment. Technically it's a meanstested benefit to help those without enough to live off, with two parts: • Guarantee Credit: This tops your income up to at least £182.60/week for singles or £278.70/week for cohabiting or married couples of state pension age. You may get more if you've got extra 'responsibilities', such as a severe disability, are a carer, or look after an under 20-year-old. The average top-up is £65/wk, so that's £3,300/year. • Savings Credit: If you hit state pension age before Apr 2016 (so you're roughly aged 71+) you may be due a top-up if you have savings, even if you're not due Guarantee Credit - the aim was to stop those who'd put something aside for their future being disadvantaged. I'm going to explain how it works, but it is really complex, so most should just call to check. Here goes... if some of your current income is from savings (it's counted as £1 per week income per £500 of savings above £10,000) and that takes you above £158/wk in income (£252 for a couple), then you get 60p extra paid per £1 of income up to a maximum £14.50 a week.

Covid Memorial unveiled

A bronze memorial sculpture has been unveiled in Barnsley to commemorate those who have lost their lives or loved ones during the continuing pandemic, as well as serving as a tribute to key workers and unsung heroes. ‘Reverence’ features seven figures cast in bronze, including a young girl, older man, volunteer, nurse, carer, police officer and a teacher. The inspiring figures span all generations and communities and represent the real, ordinary people who have been affected, and continue to be affected, by the pandemic. The unique artwork has been created by acclaimed sculptor Graham Ibbeson in collaboration with Lockbund Foundry, with poet Ian McMillan providing the emotive words ‘Barnsley’s fierce love holds you forever in its heart’. Drawings of key workers by local school children have been turned into a stunning bronze panel, which decorates the plinth. Guests including HM Lord Lieutenant Professor Dame Hilary Chapman, Lord Bishop Sentamu PC of Lindisfarne and Masooli, local MPs and Members of Barnsley Council, together with representatives from the Council and key partners, joined bereaved families, key workers and members of the public in Barnsley’s new Glass Works Square for the unveiling ceremony.

Celebrated gospel singer Janine Dyer opened the event with a rendition of Amazing Grace and there were several speakers and readings, ending with Lord Bishop Sentamu PC of Lindisfarne and Masooli who delivered a message of hope before he and Dame Hilary, together with key workers, unveiled the artwork. The sculpture is one of the first permanent Covid memorials in the world and unique because it features ordinary working people who are hugely under-represented in public art. Council Leader Sir Steve Houghton, CBE said: “This memorial project is an enduring work of art to remember those we’ve lost and to commemorate the incredible efforts of those that worked, and continue to work, so tirelessly to look after us and keep our communities going. “It is a tribute to the real heroes of the pandemic, the ordinary working people of Barnsley and the country as a whole. Working people as a group are vastly underrepresented in public art and we are proud to be at the forefront of recognising them in this sculpture.” Barnsley Hospital Chief Executive Dr Richard Jenkins said: “It’s wonderful to see this tribute to the hard working people of Barnsley who dedicate themselves to serving their community. Everyone working in healthcare has been greatly affected by the pandemic, and it is right to

take time to reflect on the variety of people and professions that have brought us this far.” Sculptor Graham Ibbeson said: “This is a memorial to people who have passed and in recognition of those who keep this country going. It’s a sculpture of hope and will be the first permanent memorial of its type in the country. I was honoured to give my time to be involved with this project.” Ian McMillan said: “I’m proud that this memorial will be a tangible reminder for generations to come of

Canine casualty FOOD AND DRINK DANGEROUS TO DOGS Dogs can be opportunists when it comes to getting their paws on tasty treats, but not all everyday food and drink are safe if they come into contact with them. Learn which nine items are particularly dangerous to your dog.

1. ONIONS, GARLIC AND CHIVES The onion family, whether dry, raw or cooked, is particularly toxic to dogs and can cause gastrointestinal irritation and red blood cell damage. Signs of illness are not always immediate and can occur up to a few days later.

2. CHOCOLATE However enticing chocolate is for humans and dogs alike, chocolate is another poisonous food for dogs. Chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine (dark chocolate has the highest content of this) which is toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure.

3. MACADAMIA NUTS Macadamia nuts contain a toxin that can affect your dog’s muscles and nervous system resulting in weakness, swollen limbs and panting.

4. CORN ON THE COB Corn on the cob could potentially be fatal if eaten by your dog. Although the corn is digested by dogs, the cob can cause a blockage in your dog’s intestine.

5. AVOCADO Avocados are another poisonous food for dogs. Avocado plants contain a substance called Persin which is in its leaves, fruit and seed and can cause vomiting and diarrhoea in dogs.

6. ARTIFICIAL SWEETENER (XYLITOL) Our desire for sweet treats, chewing gum and drinks together with low-fat, diet and sugar-free products (including some peanut butters so always check the label before using this as a treat) are often laced with an artificial sweetener called Xylitol which causes an insulin release in our bodies. However, if your dog digests one of these sweetened foods they can go into hypoglycaemia which is linked to liver failure and blood clotting disorders.

7. ALCOHOL Alcohol has a huge impact on dogs even in small doses. The drink not only causes intoxication as it does in humans, but it can lead to sickness, diarrhoea and even central nervous system damage.

8. COOKED BONES Giving your dog a raw uncooked bone to chew on is great, but avoid cooked bones at all cost. These can easily splinter and in large quantities cause constipation or at worst, a perforation of the gut which can be fatal.

9. GRAPES AND RAISINS Raisins are in many of the foods that we love to eat such as cakes, biscuits and cereals so it’s not just the fruit form we should be concerned with. The active ingredient which causes the toxin is unknown, however both grapes and raisins may cause severe liver damage and kidney failure. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY DOG HAS EATEN ANY OF THESE? If consumed, even small amounts of these items can be fatal so always act immediately and take your dog to the vets.

Follow us on Facebook

What to do if your dog is stung by a bee or wasp In most cases, a bee or wasp sting will cause some mild pain and irritation but will not need any vet treatment. Occasionally, bee and wasp stings can be more serious, so it’s better to get your dog to leave bees and wasps alone. Teaching your dog to come back (recall) will help to protect your dog.

SYMPTOMS YOUR DOG HAS BEEN STUNG BY A BEE OR WASP • Whining • Limping • Drooling • Swelling • Holding up a paw (if stung on the paw) • Biting or nibbling where the sting went in • Pawing at the face or mouth • Hives (red, swollen, itchy skin)

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR DOG HAS BEEN STUNG • Remain calm • Scrape out the sting using a credit card (or any other stiff material) or pull it out below the poison sac. Do not squeeze the sting as this could force more of the poison into your dog’s body. • Bathe the area in water • Applying ice will help to soothe the sting. Make sure the cold temperature is not uncomfortable for your dog. • Closely watch your pet for signs of an allergic reaction.
