Oakwell’s North Stand renamed after club legend Barry Murphy Barnsley Football Club has renamed the North Stand in tribute to former player and Club record appearance holder, Barry Murphy. The North Stand will now be known as the Barry Murphy Stand after being unveiled ahead of our Sky Bet Championship clash with Reading on Saturday 2 April 2022. After arriving at Oakwell 1962, the iconic full-back went onto make 569 appearances in a 16-year career, representing only the Reds during that time. He has also made the most consecutive appearances and was the first Barnsley player to be brought on as a substitute in October 1965. Inducted into the Club’s inaugural Hall of Fame in 2018, Murphy was part of the Reds side that won promotion from the Fourth Division in 1968. Barnsley FC Chief Executive Officer, Khaled

El-Ahmad said: “As we recognise our Alumni on this special day, it is fitting that we pay tribute to arguably our most legendary player – a man who has represented this great Club more than anyone else, and who continues to remain such

an important part of the matchday experience here at Oakwell. “There are many incredible individuals who we could have acknowledged with this kind of recognition, but I am sure everyone will agree that Barry Murphy is

fully deserving of this honour. “He is quite possibly the most positive, upbeat person I have met during my time at Barnsley and his legacy here is indelible. The renaming of the Barry Murphy Stand ensures it will live on

forever.” Over the coming months, season ticket holders will be given the opportunity to vote on a new name for the South Stand. Details of how to vote and the initial nominees will follow in due course.

Barnsley Hospice is based in Gawber on Church Street, S75 2RL. It has been providing compassionate, specialist care for people in Barnsley with progressive, life-limiting illnesses, and their families, since 1994.

Relaxation and conversation support introduced Two new programmes to help people with life-limiting illnesses relax and share mutual support have been launched by the hospice. The Orangery, which opened in January this year, has added two new group programmes to its suite of support services provided by qualified wellbeing therapists Providing specialist care and support to patients living with progressive health conditions which cannot be cured, The Orangery aims to help patients live their lives as well as possible as their illness progresses. It helps patients cope with symptoms such as breathlessness, fatigue, sleep problems and anxiety at any stage of their palliative care journey.

CHAT is a six-session social programme which will help people living with life-limiting illnesses come together and have an informal chat for mutual support. REST is a six-session relaxation programme which will help participants develop self-help techniques to reduce stress and tension as their illness progresses. These programmes have been added to The Orangery’s existing complementary therapy services and COPE programme. Access to The Orangery’s services is by referral-only, so Barnsley people are asked to talk to their GP if interested in being referred to The Orangery. Diane Gledhill-Cragg, complementary therapy and wellbeing lead said: “We are

pleased to launch our CHAT and REST programmes at The Orangery. Learning how to relax and sharing your experiences with like-minded people can really help to cope with the challenges of living with a

progressive illness.” The Orangery is a safe and tranquil space within Barnsley Hospice which opens on to its own sensory garden and has facilities for refreshments, and free parking.

BARNSLEY Life restaurant review

This issue we visited Mezzaluna, an amazing Italian that’s great for families I have been going to Mezzaluna for many years having always been a fan of the restaurant, however, I do honestly feel that it is better now than it has ever been. The serene colours of greys and blues and comfy seating along with friendly staff and excellent food make it an ideal destination for an evening out. I think that’s one of it’s charms actually, that it is a place great for any evening, any occasion; family tea out, couples dinner, family and friends celebrations… Mezzaluna is good for everything! Since the refurb over a year ago now there is a lovely range of tables and seating including large round marble tables with grey leather bucket seats or rectangular tables flanked by benches of the same grey. It’s all a very inviting and comfortable way to spend a pleasant couple of hours eating and drinking. So let’s talk about the eating. The menu is quite typically Italian with tempting antipasti such as, homemade meatballs (£7.95), deep fired mozzarella (£7.95), fishcakes with sweet chilli sauce (£8.95) or my favourite – homemade chicken liver pate (£7.95).

However, before the starters every table is given bread and balsamic vinegar for dipping – but not just any bread – small pillowy soft, homemade rolls. Beautiful! The main courses are a mix of pizzas, pasta, chicken, meats and seafood. Our friend always has the calzone (£11.95) and he says it is superior to others he has tried! I usually have a chicken dish because they come with a variety of cream or tomato sauces. My favourite is the chicken salute (£15.95) which is chicken breast served in a sauce of peppers, king prawns, brandy and pesto cream. I always choose the chips alongside because they are homemade and absolutely delicious – and yes, I love nothing more than dunking a few chips in the creamy sauce! (All mains do come with a choice of salad, chips or vegetables). On the last few visits the children have gone for the steaks; sirloin (£20.95) and fillet (£22.95). Steak is always a more expensive option but the ones here are well worth it; juicy and tender. There is a good variety of pasta dishes including lasagne (£10.95), seafood linguine (£14.95)

and lobster ravioli (£15.95) and some fish dishes including seabass (£20.95). The menu is available online so make sure you have a good look but you will find something for everyone. I tend to always have a starter and a main because before 6.30pm any day you can have the two courses for £17.95 or for just an extra £2 you can have a dessert too but to be honest I am just too full. However, I do remember being quite envious of my son’s honeycomb cheesecake! Mezzaluna is ideally placed in Mapplewell

so with a few drinks in the local pubs and a delicious meal it is a great evening out. You will always be warmly welcomed by the

staff and as it’s a popular destination the busy atmosphere makes for a fun, enjoyable meal. It’s no surprise that

Mezzaluna has been around for many years but like I have already mentioned, now it is at its best.

Eligible households set to receive £150 Council Tax Energy Rebate Last week, the Government announced measures to help protect millions of households from rising energy costs. This includes a one-off payment of £150 council tax energy rebate to all households whose primary residence is in council tax band A to D. The Government are asking local council tax billing authorities like us to administer the rebate payments on their behalf using council tax billing information to identify eligible households. We will therefore be using our council tax billing information to identify all households across the borough whose house is in council tax band A to D and start making payments in April 2022. We will also receive funding to operate a discretionary fund for households in need, who would otherwise not be eligible. If you are an eligible household, the quickest and most convenient way to

receive your payment is by setting up a Direct Debit to pay your council tax. By setting up a Direct Debit, we can make the payment promptly and directly into your bank account. Please note that the payment will not be used to offset what you owe in council tax – the payment will simply be paid straight into your bank account. So, we’re urging all eligible households to set up a Direct Debit as soon as possible. If you already pay your council tax by Direct Debit, you do not need to do anything, the payment will be credited to your account. If you choose not to set up a Direct Debit for your payments, your payment may be delayed, and you will be asked to complete an application form to claim your payment. An added bonus of setting up a Direct Debit to receive your payment is that it is also the easiest and most convenient way to pay your council tax as it means you

can spread the cost and ensure you never miss a payment. Councillor Alan Gardiner, cabinet spokesperson for Core Services, said: “As we see the rising cost of energy prices and, more generally, the surging cost of living, the announcement from the Government last week to offer all eligible households a council tax rebate has been welcomed with open arms. “As the local authority administering the payments, our priority now is to make the

payments to all eligible households as quickly as we can. Prosecution for counterfeit ‘Wonka Bar’ seller

A business owner from Huddersfield, who's been trading in Barnsley, has pleaded guilty for selling counterfeit products with incorrect labelling and allergy advice. Nathan Bennett, 33, of Leeds Road, Huddersfield, pleaded guilty at Barnsley Magistrates Court on Monday 4 April 2022 to Food Safety, Labelling and Trade Marks charges. The case was adjourned until Tuesday 26 April to allow for the completion of presentencing reports. Bennett traded as Kandy Fix in the Alhambra Centre, Barnsley, between August and December 2021. In August 2021, following a complaint from a member of the public, a Trading Standards Officer visited the premises and got a sample of what appeared

to be a counterfeit Wonka Bar. The court heard that the ingredients list on the label of the Wonka Bar did not match that of the chocolate it contained, and notably, the chocolate itself contained hazelnut paste. Analysis showed that one or two squares of the chocolate bar contained enough hazelnut to trigger a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the airway. At the interview, Bennett claimed to have only sold the Wonka Bars for two weeks and that he did not know that what he was doing was an offence. However, the evidence presented by Barnsley Council demonstrated that he had been selling Wonka Bars since at least 2019 at another kiosk in Huddersfield.

He had also been given advice on food allergen labelling on at least six occasions by North East Lincolnshire and Doncaster councils. Bennett had also been prosecuted previously for selling Wonka Bars in similar circumstances in North East Lincolnshire in 2016. Julia Burrows, Director of Public Health, said: "It’s vitally important that food labelling includes all ingredients, as they can cause potential serious injury or death to a consumer who is allergic to their ingredients. Mr Bennett has shown a complete disregard for the safety of his customers in his actions. "We will always help businesses comply, but where they put the public at risk knowing the potential

consequences, we will take enforcement action." Last week, the Food Standards Agency issued a warning to consumers about the risks posed by counterfeit Wonka Bars, which appear to be particularly prevalent at the moment. You can read it by visiting their website at https://www.food. gov.uk/newsalerts/news/ fsa-issues-warning-overcounterfeit -wonka-bars If members of the public see Wonka Bars on sale in Barnsley, they are advised to report them by emailing regulatoryservices@barnsle y.gov.uk or calling 01226 773743.

Female business owners of Eldon Street celebrated during Women's History Month To celebrate Women’s History month during March the Eldon Street High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) has been uncovering the untold and forgotten stories of women business owners on Eldon Street and the Victorian Arcade. It is often assumed that in the Victorian period women entrepreneurs were rare, but this new research has found that not only were there many women business owners on Eldon Street and the Arcade in the past, but that

these pioneers were part of a long tradition that continues to this day. The project has also found creative ways to share the fascinating stories of women business owners on Eldon Street, connecting the past and the present. A new animation has been created, working with local artists and a group of Barnsley young carers, to showcase some of the hidden stories uncovered during the project. This was launched

along with a new blog for International Women’s Day at the start of the month. The WE Great Ladies have also been visiting local businesses as the Eldon Street Brides with photographer James Mulkeen, collecting stories of the street and shining a light on the amazing independent businesses – many run by women – that continue to make Eldon Street and the Arcade such a special part of Barnsley Town Centre today.

Denise Childs and Debra Ashurst, owners, Leslie Frances Hairdressing said: ''We have run our business on Eldon street for over 40 years training and educating hundreds of young women and men many of whom have gone on to run their own businesses in and around Barnsley. "We hope that the regeneration of Eldon street will ensure our building will continue to inspire further generations to realise their

full potential." Tegwen Roberts, Project Officer for the HSHAZ added: “It’s great to see women business owners still have a really strong presence here

on Eldon St and in the arcade. "The research has shown that strong women business owners are part of Barnsley’s DNA and it’s something we should celebrate."

HOME VISITS Are you struggling with your eyes, vision or glasses but unable to attend a Specsavers store to get checked? Did you know Specsavers can bring the test to you? If you meet the criteria to qualify the Specsavers Home Visiting team can visit you and conduct your eye test in the comfort of your own home.

You will qualify for a home eye test if you are unable to get to a store unaccompanied due to a medical condition and fall into one of the following categories: • Over 60 • Under 16 • In full time education aged 16, 17 or 18 • Receive benefits such as Income Support, Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseekers Allowance, Universal Credit • Diabetic • Over 40 with a family history of glaucoma As a front line service supporting the NHS we are still operating despite the Covid19 pandemic. All our teams are equipped with full PPE and will always enter your home wearing this. We are an experienced team. Our two directors are Mel Wilson (Ophthalmic Director) and Emma Taylor (Customer Service Director). Mel qualified as an optometrist in 1998 and has worked in store for large chains and independent businesses. She found her passion for domiciliary work 4 years ago and has been part of the home visiting team ever since. Emma is a qualified dispensing optician and, like Mel, is very experienced having worked in the industry for 13 years both in store and, more recently dedicating herself to the domiciliary team. Emma and Mel are passionate about their work and, along with their team of friendly,

knowledgeable optical assistants, are committed to helping people in the community. We often get asked how a home visit test works. And it’s really quite straightforward! Firstly, a full general health history is taken. We then take a look at your existing glasses so we can check the current prescription. This helps us understand a little more about you and compare your current prescription to your new one. We perform a range of eye health tests including the glaucoma test and a health check of the front and back of the eye. Next, we start to understand if your prescription has changed. This process is quite similar to what you will have had done in store. We use a trial frame a and range of lenses to check how well you can see the test chart. Our test chart, though, is on a tablet!

Mel Wilson Once this has been completed we can then make recommendations taking into account your home situation and visual requirements. We have a large selection of frames some of which you will see in store and some of which are domiciliary specific. Our offers and pricing are also the same as in store. Our testing kit has a range of low vision equipment and we’re are happy to demonstrate how this works and could benefit you. This includes low visions aides for both distance near vision. Once you have chosen your new glasses, they are placed on order and generally delivered and fitted within 14 days. A full at home aftercare service is available so we can look after you and your glasses between appointments!

If you feel you qualify for a home visit or want any more details, please call us on 01226 982517 where Christina or Kelly will take your call in our Barnsley based office.

Is this actually the best time to chat to a financial adviser? There doesn’t seem to be a lot of good news flying about these days. And if there is, it is being swamped by all the bad! It is so tough at the moment, with the cost of living crisis enveloping the country. We are being faced with: • Soaring energy bills. • The rising cost of food. • Fuel prices skyrocketing. • Inflation beginning to climb steadily • Russia’s invasion of Ukraine destabilising the world. • Covid-19 refusing to go away and still rearing its ugly head. All these things have intensified emotional and financial concerns. It appears to be getting harder and harder for people to make their money stretch far enough to meet their ‘needs’, let alone their ‘wants’. Stress, anxiety and depression are prevalent for all kinds of other reasons too, including potential job losses and other financial constraints. It is a time of worry and consternation. But perhaps that’s what makes

it the right time to speak to someone who could help you get to grips with your financial affairs. Regardless of personal wealth, the question Lifetime’s coaches and financial specialists get asked most frequently by new customers is some version of: “Will I be ok? Do I have enough?” By fully understanding your financial situation, you may discover ways of making your money work better for you. And any decisions you may have to make will at least be taken from a much better informed position. This is where a conversation with a professional is crucial. It could lead to help, guidance and advice that may play a key part in alleviating a lot of your worries. Research by Royal London backs up our belief. Their survey confirmed that interaction with a professional financial adviser, and the receiving of quality advice, can deliver more than just the financial benefits, but can also help people feel better about their personal money matters, and also about themselves. Lifetime has finance professionals who use specialist software to give customers an

accurate picture of what you need to do in order to achieve your plans, and will give you advice on your best course of action. That ‘financial picture’ will have a comprehensive breakdown of current lifestyle costs, including essential expenditure, debt repayments, leisure activities, holidays, one-off expenses etc. It will also incorporate changes, such as the ending of a mortgage and other expenses, and make relevant adjustments. Various different scenarios can be shown, right up to a customer’s 100th birthday. Your finances determine a lot of your choices in life. We find that those with a financial plan are much more likely to have the necessary funds to realise their goals and objectives in retirement – and to identify obstacles, if any, that need to be overcome to enjoy life to the full after your working career comes to a close. People often seek financial advice because of a specific issue, such as a concern over a pension policy, but right at the heart of that need is one overriding thing: peace of mind. That all important sense of security.

We believe everyone deserves to have someone they can truly trust, to talk to about their money. And to be given access to the right help, guidance and advice so they can take firm control of their financial planning. After many years in financial services our Lifetime specialists have concluded quite clearly that everyone (and we mean everyone, regardless of wealth) has some sort of anxiety around money. The greatest service a financial planner can provide is to help minimise that anxiety, and push confidence, clarity and understanding to the forefront. Indeed, in these days of uncertainty and rising costs, Lifetime Managing Director Ian Dickinson is determined to ensure that financial education and better decision-making is available to as many people as possible. Ian says: “There has never been a greater need for a service that can offer financial guidance, support and advice. It more or less consumes me and I am proud of

the ambition we hold. Our vision is clear! "We offer help, guidance and financial planning to everyone. We are there for individuals, couples and families, and we are there for companies and all their employees. Our financial wellbeing programme provides people with the opportunity to fully understand their financial picture, and to make good financial choices today, tomorrow and in the future.” “I truly believe that people’s lives are better because of the important education and understanding we are able to impart!” These are turbulent times; we acknowledge that. We know and appreciate it is not easy. If you are feeling concerned about your finances then have that conversation with a professional. That chat could in turn lead to welcome guidance and invaluable advice. It could help you get through the tough days. Thank you for reading.

SCIENCE ADVENTURE CENTRE A fantastic day out for the whole family, Magna Science Adventure Centre is an experiential venue packed with interactive exhibits and a rich history that reaches from its origins in Rotherham to links as far as Cornwall! Explore the wonders of science and technology through the elements in the four pavilions – Water, Air, Earth and Fire; Make a splash with water cannons and weights, work a real JCB, spark excitement at the fire tornado and even explode a rock face! Magna is a coats-on experience set in the vast, former Templeborough Steelworks, where the awesome Big Melt Show brings the story of the world’s once largest electric melting shop to life every hour. The fun even continues outside with the huge adventure playground and summertime splash park. Magna is an exceptional science museum based in Rotherham, just up the road from Meadowhall. Its doors opened nearly 21 years ago as a part of the Millenium Projects initiative alongside the likes of Cornwall’s Eden Project, to educate children and adults alike on the sciences and technology in a creative, interactive and inspiring way; As well as making for a unique and memorable day out in South Yorkshire! Even before it achieved the title of largest electric melting shop in the world, Magna and the surrounding area was still being used for production and progression. The site has been inhabited by hard workers and forward thinkers since as far back as 50AD, when the Romans established it as

Templeborough Fort to produce iron and it has only continued to evolve since. Magna has four pavilions inspired by the elements and how they contributed to the steelworking process. On the lowest floor is the Earth Pavilion, where the procedure of extracting iron from natural minerals is represented through interactive and kinetic attractions including a working JCB and the chance to detonate a quarry wall. Working upwards is the Water Pavilion, where fun activities like a huge steel waterwheel and several different water guns explore how the planet’s most common liquid was involved in the cooling and powering of the shop’s machinery. We suggest packing a spare change of clothes for children, as this

area does get quite wet! The third pavilion is Fire, where the famous fire tornado can be ignited with just the press of a button, and the steel smelting process can be replicated with the electric furnace. Finally, suspended from the roof as a great translucent airship is the Air Pavilion, explaining how air was used to assist in the forge’s combustion with air cannons that create smoke patterns, pipes that explore how sound is made and even a real-life tornado! Running alongside these amazing element halls is The Big Melt, where every hour - sparks fly and the story of the Templeborough Steelworks is narrated, accompanied by moving machinery, explosive lights and booming sound effects; the show is

spectacular to watch, intriguing to hear and adored by everyone who visits! On weekdays, Magna opens its doors to schools and educational groups for exciting, informative trips. During the weekends, the attraction is fully accessible to the public with workshops that everyone can get involved in and experience. And, for when the weather is sunny and you fancy being even more adventurous, Magna boasts Sci Tek: one of the UK’s largest outdoor play zones, suitable for all ages! The park’s watery counterpart, Aqua Tek, is perfect for cooling off after a wander around the attraction and opens at the end of May each year for the Summer break - if you fancy a visit, you’ll be needing a towel or two!

Spring is in the air It’s been a pretty awful start to the year in lots of ways, more Covid around at home and war and drought in places further afield. Please read on, this article is going to be a positive one. The current situation is a reminder to us all to appreciate both who and what is around us. At Age UK Barnsley moving into spring means that more outdoor activities can begin to take place, more fresh air can be inhaled and nature can work its magic for our overall wellbeing. We’ve already had one trip to the seaside – the Worsbrough Coffee & Conversation Group had a whale of a time at Cleethorpes. The Cudworth Chatty Café will soon be following in their footsteps. A new Bowling Group is starting at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium. There is already an Age UK Barnsley Bowling Group at Shaw Lane Sports Club. These groups aren’t for experts (though they would be equally welcome), they’re for people over 50

who fancy trying something that gets them out of the house, a bit of gentle exercise and an opportunity to meet socially with other people. You will have seen mention of BOPPAA (Barnsley Older People Physical Activity Alliance) in these articles before. The purpose of the Alliance is to make it easier for Barnsley’s over 50s to find out what’s available to them in their area

and how to get involved. Look out for the launch of both the on-line and paper copies of this information. Something else to watch out for is the Council-led Barnsley Walking Festival in May, currently in preparation, look out for this opportunity to stretch your legs! At Age UK Barnsley they realise that the outdoor life is not for everybody, in the past few months’

new groups and events have been popping up all over the Barnsley area. These range from craft and games sessions, indoor physical activities, new coffee and chat mornings, even mining related ‘Colliers’ Monday’ afternoons. They can also provide one to one befriending by phone and in person, it’s all part of their Council funded social inclusion work combatting loneliness and social

isolation. Everyone is unique, people’s needs and wants are different so it’s important that Age UK Barnsley’s response is tailored to the person in question. If you are over 50 and live in the Barnsley Council area, Age UK Barnsley are here for you.

DAN JARVIS UNITES WITH CANCER RESEARCH UK AT ANNIVERSARY Dan Jarvis celebrated the past, present and future of research at a Cancer Research UK event in Westminster on Tuesday 29 March to mark the charity’s 20th anniversary. The Barnsley Central MP had the chance to meet with researchers working on the latest breakthroughs and campaigners helping to deliver change in their communities, alongside learning about the cuttingedge discoveries taking place on his doorstep. In the UK, survival has doubled in the last 40 years and today, 2 in 4 people survive their cancer for at least 10 years. Cancer Research UK’s ambition is to accelerate progress so that by 2034, 3 in 4 people will survive their cancer for at least a decade. Dan Jarvis said: “Cancer Research UK carry out

extraordinary work. Their world-leading research has seen remarkable advances in the fight against the disease, and now more people than ever are surviving their cancer. But, there’s further to go. “1 in 2 of us will get cancer in our lifetime*. Sadly, I know from my own personal experience how cancer can ruin lives and I think the responsibility lies with us all to come together in the fight against cancer. Together – we will beat cancer.” 2022 is a special year for Cancer Research UK, as it marks 20 years since the charity was formed. However, its history goes back much further, to 1902, with the founding of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund – meaning its work has been at the heart of some of the biggest developments in

cancer, including some of the most used cancer drugs around the world today. Shaun Walsh, Head of Public Affairs and Campaigning at Cancer Research UK, said: “A big thank you to Dan Jarvis for joining us to raise awareness in our 20th anniversary year. Every day we see the benefits of work we’ve previously funded being realised, helping people live longer and healthier lives. “Thanks to our supporters, partners, researchers and staff, we will continue to fund groundbreaking research to reveal more of cancer’s secrets. By putting discovery at the heart of everything we do, and working with people around the world, we can make huge strides in our understanding of cancer and how to beat it.” For more information visit cruk.org.

BARNSLEY Life Money Matters

This issue we update a previous article about solar panels. Could they be the answer to our soaring electricity bills? 1. The solar panel maths is getting better As the price of energy has rocketed, generating solar power and using it yourself gives a far bigger saving now than it used to. Under the smart export guarantee (SEG) scheme which launched in January 2020, households get paid for solar energy they 'export'. This is electricity you generate, but don't use yourself, which is then pumped back into the national energy grid. The prior feed-in tariff scheme was far more generous, with higher rates and you got paid for generating energy, even if you used it yourself. However, if you've got savings you can use to pay for the panels, with interest rates still so low, it's worth doing the numbers for yourself as the SEG scheme can work out well for some.

2. The biggest gain comes from using what you generate – you could save up to £405/year on your bills First and foremost, you can use the electricity your panels generate, thus reducing your electricity bills. Savings depend on system size, electricity use, whether you're at home during the day to use the energy you're producing and other factors. But based on Energy Saving Trust estimates, a typical household with a 4.2 kilowatt-peak system can knock between £165/year and £405/year off bills.

3. You could get paid £110/year for any excess energy you generate, but SEG tariffs differ widely The smart export guarantee (SEG) scheme works by requiring energy suppliers with 150,000+ customers to offer 'tariffs' to households in England, Scotland and Wales, which pay a set rate for each kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity you generate from solar panels, but DON'T use yourself.

Crucially, the amount you get back depends on the company and ranges from just 1.5p per kWh to 12p per kWh – so make sure you go for the bestpaying tariff you can (it doesn't have to be the same firm that supplies your energy). And keep an eye on the rate you're getting as many are variable. Though of course, the firm's solvency matters too as if it goes bust, you'll have to find another tariff yourself, so bear that in mind. The Energy Saving Trust estimates a typical household based roughly in the middle of the country could make between £80/year and £110/year (based on a rate of 3.99p per kWh).

It's all about daylight, not hours of sunshine or temperature. Northern homes get slightly less, so where you live needs to be factored in. If you're at home all day, it will take you less time to make your money back. You'll recoup the installation costs in about 13 years on average, if you live in the middle of the country. In comparison, if you're only home during the evenings, it's about 24 years.

• You usually need a predominantly south-facing roof. If your roof faces south-west or west you'll still get some benefit, but it may be less effective, and you might not get the maximum savings. • Your roof should be unshaded between 10am and 4pm. While some early or late shading from other buildings or trees is OK, during the peak period for daylight you want the panels to be out of any shade.

This is all about how much electricity • You need a fair bit of space. Solar you're using. installed, well-designed solar PV system, though you'll likely need to replace the inverter – a gadget that is a key part of the mechanism – within about 25 years (costing around £800). Of course, though, things can go wrong. If so, check the installer warranty you get – it can cover you for up to 20 years. If the panels are damaged by something unexpected, such as a storm, you may also be covered by buildings insurance – check with your insurer before you have them installed.

11. Solar batteries are expensive but may be worth it for those who use a substantial amount of electricity on whether this could be offset by the panels pushing up the value of your home). While you could physically remove the panels from your old home and install them on the new one, this could prove costly. Plus, while you could still use what you generate yourself at your new address, you'd no longer get paid for what you export. To receive payments your panels need to be certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme and the organisation told us it wouldn't certify panels that have been moved. It's also worth noting solar panel installations are tailored to each home – to fit the roof and be positioned to maximise the level of sunlight they receive – so it's likely they wouldn't perform as well if you installed them on a different home anyway.

8. Don't assume you'll always recoup the cost of solar panels on your home's value if you sell your house early Some people assume that a more efficient home generating its own energy would be more attractive to buyers. But others worry that 'ugly' panels plastered all over their roof could push the price of their house down.

homeowners who move having had 10. If you decide solar panels installed would claw back some panels are right for you, of the value of their investment in a higher sale price. There are benefits to having solar panels – however, in the short term, they don't provide an increase in house value, with the panels often costing more than they attribute in value. With houses coming on to the market in short supply and other factors, people are being forced to compromise on their preferences, including energy saving measures."

The system and the installer should meet the standards of the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). And make sure the installer is a member of the Renewable Energy Consumer Code.

As always, get at least three quotes, and get 'em in writing. A solar battery can store any excess power generated by your solar panels that you don't use at the time, rather than exporting it back to the grid. They aren't cheap – costing about £2,100 for a three kilowatt-hour battery. The savings you make on your bills can be significant, though. The price you're paid for each unit of energy you export to the grid is usually much lower than the price you pay your supplier for electricity. So, economically, it makes more sense to store the energy and use it yourself – with E.on saying a household with a battery could use 30% more of the electricity they generate themselves. Another potential advantage of a battery is that it can increase the rate you get paid for exporting your electricity back to the grid. Some firms will pay many times more than the standard amount if you buy certain types of batteries. The battery isn't all about what you generate yourself, either. If you're on a flexible 'time-of-use' energy tariff, with cheaper electricity overnight for example, you can charge the battery at cheaper times from the grid and use it to power your house during more expensive hours. But for most, the initial outlay won't be recouped quickly enough. The extra cost can add years to the break-even point – Solar Energy UK says it could typically add anything from an extra five to 13 years, depending on the size of the battery and system.

Never borrow from solar companies to pay for the panels Some installers let you buy solar panels on credit. If you don't have the cash However, if you use a large amount of upfront, panels aren't for you. The electricity (for instance, you have a big loan's interest could dwarf the savings. family and have electric cars) and use time-of-use tariffs to maximise costSolar panels are generally low efficiency, it could be worth considering maintenance a battery. Covid Memorial unveiled A bronze memorial sculpture has been unveiled in Barnsley to commemorate those who have lost their lives or loved ones during the continuing pandemic, as well as serving as a tribute to key workers and unsung heroes. ‘Reverence’ features seven figures cast in bronze, including a young girl, older man, volunteer, nurse, carer, police officer and a teacher. The inspiring figures span all generations and communities and represent the real, ordinary people who have been affected, and continue to be affected, by the pandemic. The unique artwork has been created by acclaimed sculptor Graham Ibbeson in collaboration with Lockbund Foundry, with poet Ian McMillan providing the emotive words ‘Barnsley’s fierce love holds you forever in its heart’. Drawings of key workers by local school children have been turned into a stunning bronze panel, which decorates the plinth. Guests including HM Lord Lieutenant Professor Dame Hilary Chapman, Lord Bishop Sentamu PC of Lindisfarne and Masooli, local MPs and Members of Barnsley Council, together with representatives from the Council and key partners, joined bereaved families, key workers and members of the public in Barnsley’s new Glass Works Square for the unveiling ceremony.

Celebrated gospel singer Janine Dyer opened the event with a rendition of Amazing Grace and there were several speakers and readings, ending with Lord Bishop Sentamu PC of Lindisfarne and Masooli who delivered a message of hope before he and Dame Hilary, together with key workers, unveiled the artwork. The sculpture is one of the first permanent Covid memorials in the world and unique because it features ordinary working people who are hugely under-represented in public art. Council Leader Sir Steve Houghton, CBE said: “This memorial project is an enduring work of art to remember those we’ve lost and to commemorate the incredible efforts of those that worked, and continue to work, so tirelessly to look after us and keep our communities going. “It is a tribute to the real heroes of the pandemic, the ordinary working people of Barnsley and the country as a whole. Working people as a group are vastly underrepresented in public art and we are proud to be at the forefront of recognising them in this sculpture.” Barnsley Hospital Chief Executive Dr Richard Jenkins said: “It’s wonderful to see this tribute to the hard working people of Barnsley who dedicate themselves to serving their community. Everyone working in healthcare has been greatly affected by the pandemic, and it is right to

Barnsley Serves Up Captivating Social History Exhibition

A fascinating exhibition and packed events programme launches next week which tells the unlikely story of how Barnsley became the tennis ball capital of the world. “Barnsley Serves the World” runs from Saturday April 9 until October 8 at Experience Barnsley, a museum dedicated to, and largely curated by, the people of the borough. For more than 50 years, workers at the town’s famous Slazenger factory made tennis balls which were expertly served around the world, including Wimbledon. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the factory’s closure and transfer of production to the Philippines. The exhibition will showcase the stories of the people who worked there, re-living memories and shopfloor camaraderie. The exhibition will include memorabilia, photographs, evocative Pathe films, newly commissioned films as well as activities for sporting fans of all ages.

Comedy duo We Great Ladies will help the exhibition get underway on April 9. The pair, sporting a retro tennis look, will entertain visitors throughout the day. Steven Skelley, who has developed the exhibition, explains: “Barnsley’s role in the tennis world is both fascinating and significant. “This exhibition brings history to life and will no doubt appeal to many people, regardless of their interest in sport. “Barnsley Serves the World really does have something for all ages and interests. Our unofficial world record attempt will be a great spectacle for families, and there will be opportunities for youngsters to get involved in craft activities as they make tennis purses and musical instruments out of recycled balls, rackets, and shuttlecocks.” Workers at the Slazenger factory in Barnsley made the balls used by legends such as Bjorn Borg, Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova

and Roy Laver before the factory closed in 2002. John McEnroe’s famous tantrum centred on whether a Barnsley-made ball was “in or out” ! Visitors to the exhibition will also be able to hear from Barnsley poet Ian McMillan who was one of hundreds of workers at the Doncaster Road factory in the early 80s. The poet has penned a poem about what the factory meant to Barnsley which has been translated into Tagalog and sent to the new factory in the Philippines. Ian, who worked on the Buff and Dip machines, will give a special reading of his poem ‘Over the Net and Over the Sea on April 9 at 1pm. He’ll also be holding a free workshop on April 28 at Experience Barnsley where he promises there will be a fun session of ‘making a racquet and bouncing words around’.
