Energy Myth Busting

A day spent wandering around the grounds of this National Trust gem P6

A look at some of the right and wrong ways to save money on our energy bills P16

We are here to help – residents urged to get in touch if worried about rising energy costs Wakefield Council is reassuring residents who fear they may not be able to afford rising energy costs, that its support services are here to help. Concerns are being raised about the price of energy after Ofgem said it will be raising the Energy Price Cap from 1 October 2021 – with the average annual household energy bill set to increase by around £140. This is in addition to annual fuel rises of around £100 per household that came into force in April. Citizens Advice report that COVID-19 has driven over half a million households into energy debt and seven million are worrying about their heating bills. Wakefield Council offers a range of specialist money services and support to residents and is urging those who are struggling financially to seek help. Cllr Darren Byford, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth, Regeneration and Property said: “If anyone is concerned being not being able to pay their energy bills, please know you are not alone and we are here to help, and can offer advice and a strong package of support.” “We recognise that many households are facing very challenging times financially, due

to impact of the pandemic, low wages and now these additional energy costs will be a major worry for some residents in our district people. Please do not worry – we are just a phone call away.” Services include Money Smart, which is open to all residents, that has been running since 2018 and provides tailored support with energy efficiency improvements, energy switching, money and debt advice, benefit checks, and skills and employment support. Fully qualified money and debt advisors provide this service. And 737 households have been supported so far. The Council has recruited additional staff to support residents, to able to meet any rise in demand for complex money, debt and energy bill related support. Other services that can help residents who meet qualifying criteria, include the Council’s Mortgage Breathing Space – running since 2008, this unique project, hosted by the Council and available across the region, provides mortgage advice, lender negotiation, and interest free secured loans to prevent homelessness. So far 425 households have been supported and 225 loans (£1.8m) delivered,

with £1.6m recycled loans paid back. People who qualify can also access energy debt support, with grants to help clear problem energy debts enabling residents to move to cheaper energy suppliers and payment methods/tariffs. Additional support for those that qualify includes home energy efficiency and fuel poverty schemes which offer a range of

ongoing heating and insulation improvement grants and loans. Over 9,000 households have been supported since 2005. Feedback from some private sector Money Smart clients is that they like dealing directly with the Council’s Money Smart Team for their money and debt issues. At The Art House, artists and audiences of all kinds are invited to engage with the creative process through a year-round programme of residencies, exhibitions, events, workshops, and professional development opportunities. What can you find at the Art House over the next few months? FRED TSCHIDA: CIRCLESPHERE Until 28 November The Art House and Neon Workshops have partnered to bring the pioneering work of neon artist Fred Tschida to Europe for the first time. FRED TSCHIDA: CIRCLESPHERE celebrates ten years since Neon Workshops was established in Wakefield, and 20 years since its founder, artist Richard William Wheater, was introduced to Fred Tschida’s alternative explorations in neon. While studying in New York as his student at Alfred University, Wheater first discovered Tschida’s kinetic sculpture Sphere (2000), which he cites as the piece that made him fall in love with neon. The exhibition is a celebration of both this moment and Fred Tschida’s lifelong obsession with light and movement as an art form, as well as Wheater’s determination to introduce the

world to an unsung neon master. CIRCLESPHERE includes six gas-filled glass illuminated sculptures that revolve on freestanding wooden frames. Standing between 2.1m and 2.8m tall, the kinetic sculptures, skim The Art House gallery ceilings and fill the space with colours and light. These works are accompanied by the complementary exhibition SPHERE, a monumental rotating neon-clad circle, on display at Neon Workshop’s project space, 7A, filling the entire 3000 sq. ft warehouse space. A programme of events, workshops and talks will run alongside FRED TSCHIDA: CIRCLESPHERE exhibition. With the help of some of The Art Houses most creative friends and collaborators, they have curated a range of immersive neon experiences. From workshops to help you navigate the challenges and creative opportunities of photographing neon, to pop-up restaurants and music performances that respond to Tschida's neon sculptures in motion, the programme is packed full of exciting ways to explore this iconic and endangered art form! The Ridings at the heart of Wakefield At The Ridings, you'll find a range of great shops, entertainment & dining experiences, from major national stores like M&S & T.K.Maxx to numerous independent, local businesses. All-day parking is also available for £5 and 50p on Sundays & Bank Holidays. The Ridings is a fully covered shopping centre truly at the heart of Wakefield’s city centre. Anchored by high street favourites such as Morrisons, Primark, TK Maxx and M&S, the centre is also home to numerous independent local businesses and is a hub for local arts and charitable groups through its ‘Makey Wakey’ initiative with The Art House. It is this rather unique mix that sets The Ridings apart from other shopping centres and gives it a very special enhanced experience for shoppers and visitors. The Ridings has seen an ever growing number of independent businesses take up residence in the centre. The Den is a very popular children’s play area, and Created in Yorkshire and Made & Found in Yorkshire are inspiring stores filled with quality products, made and designed by local people who want to offer something a little bit different to the bigger high street stores. Reel Cinema, an independent chain of deluxe cinemas, is open every day until late and shows the latest blockbusters as well as more niche productions, such as ballet and opera. The cinema is complemented by a licensed bar, Ruby Lou’s, and a number of local, independent cafes in which visitors can take a break and enjoy a drink and bite to eat. Having had a recent ‘face lift’ and injection of investment, The Ridings is fully accessible and has all the expected amenities, from over 1000 covered parking spaces, Family parking and Blue Badge spaces, a customer service lounge, free shop mobility service and a number of public toilets, accessible toilets, a changing places room and an award winning parent and child lounge. An area called ‘ Our Yard’ has been decorated by art

from the local college and offers free table tennis, table football, chess and free little library and is an area for visitors to relax and catch up with friends. Now that restrictions have been somewhat relaxed, our monthly Craft Fayres and Antique and Collectible fayres will be back in the schedule, plus, new for 2021, a Vegan Fayre. Regular free activities for the young, families and slighter older visitors are also being planned, emphasising the support for the community that The Ridings embodies. The centre is also home to many community led activities including a bi-weekly Time for Teas session with AgeUk (Wakefield), Slimming World classes , weekly craft groups and local support groups such as M.I.N.T. And Wakefield Community Choir, who all meet up regularly. Surprising to many, The Ridings also boasts 24 mini rooftop allotments for local residents, a colony of bees on the roof and a number of living walls. This initiative to bring more nature to city centre residents has been a huge success and feedback has shown it to be both popular and appreciated. This award winning centre recently won two environmental Green Apple awards to add to its collection of Marketing and Community awards and it’s Mini Allotment project is currently a contender for a Wakefield Express Excellence Award. The Ridings is a real gem in the city centre of Wakefield - if you have not visited recently, why not? Pop along to enjoy what the centre has to offer and to show your support to both the centre and the local independent businesses in there. When deciding where to shop, especially in the run up to Christmas, bear in mind that small local businesses have had a particularly difficult eighteen months and really need the support of their communities. More information, opening times and directions etc. Can be found at www.ridingscentre.com or on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using the handle @ridingscentre.

Green Apple Awards 2021 The Ridings achieved not one, but two Green Apples awards this year with the help of fantastic service partners AM Services Group and Bidvest Noonan. The first award for ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT, was given to The Ridings specifically for the ‘Roof Top Mini Allotment’ project. The centre is surrounded by tall and imposing residential tower blocks housing apartments with small balconies, which are home to many of the centre’s regular shoppers. The impetus for the successful and innovative Roof Top Mini Allotment project was sparked by asking the question: “…what if we could create a place for those who wanted somewhere to meet other people and grow their own produce, in a safe and local location, especially the elderly and more vulnerable as part of our on-going partnership with AgeUK?” The second award was for The Ridings WASTE MANAGEMENT, the achievements including 705,576 KWH of energy saved, 218,814 metres cubed of C02 saved, 1,769,011 litres of water saved and 1,151 trees saved. A fantastic achievement! The Ridings is owned by NewRiver REIT plc and managed by Workman LLP

Nostell Priory

A couple of weekends ago we visited Nostell and although we’ve been before it’s one of the places where we think ‘why don’t we come here more often…??’ After all it’s on our doorstep and we really should make the most of its beautiful charms, particularly whilst we are having these glorious, late summer sunshine days. Built on the site of a medieval priory, Nostell is an eighteenth century country house with over 300 acres of park to explore, including meadows, lakes, gardens and of course the stately home which houses a great collection of various Chippendale items. There’s plenty of places to wander for free within the grounds for your £5 all day parking (free to National Trust members). We visited on a balmy Sunday afternoon with our dog, Molly when the signs of Autumn were just starting to show off their wonder. On her long lead Molly was able to enjoy snuffling along the various paths and carriageways; first over the bridge, beside the wildflower meadow towards Obelisk Lodge then circle back along the winding paths of the woodland. It’s a beautiful, gentle walk to wander through the dappled sunlight alongside busy squirrels and robins and tumbling conkers. The National Trust café and shop are located in the stables where you can enjoy drinks and snacks al fresco in the courtyard. However, be prepared to wait – we went twice and turned back because of the long queues. It was very disappointing as honestly, I do covet fresh scones but apparently the queues are common so next time we’ll take a thermos and biscuit!

Traditional English Cottage Pie

400ml beef stock 50g butter 2 onions, peeled and finely chopped 2 carrots, peeled and finely diced 2 celery, trimmed and finely diced 3 garlic cloves 1 sprig fresh thyme 1 bay leaf 1kg minced beef (ground beef) 2 tablespoons tomato puree 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 4 drops Tabasco sauce 175ml red wine

METHOD 1. Melt the butter in a pan on a medium heat. Add the onion, carrot, celery, garlic, thyme and bay leaf and fry over a medium/low heat for 10 minutes, or until softened but not coloured. 2. Add the beef mince and cook for a further 10 minutes, or until brown. 3. Add the tomato purée, worcestershire sauce and Tabasco, then stir and cook for 2 minutes. 4. Turn the heat up to high and add the red wine. Let it bubble away and reduce for 5 minutes then add the stock and reduce to a medium heat. Simmer for a further 20 minutes, stirring often. 5. Meanwhile, cut the potatoes into halves and quarters so they’re all a fairly even size. Cook in a pan of boiling, salted water for 15 to 20 minutes, or until cooked through. Drain in a colander and leave to steam dry. 6. Preheat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5.

7. Taste the mince and season accordingly with salt and pepper. Transfer it to an ovenproof dish (approximately 20cm by 30cm).

1. You will need a 28cm (11in) wide-based round ovenproof dish, and a roasting tin large enough to place it in. 2. Cut the brioche loaf into 1.5cm (⅝in) slices and brush each slice with melted butter on both sides. Arrange the slices in a spiral in the buttered dish and scatter over the sultanas. 3. To make the custard, place all the ingredients in a large bowl and whisk together by hand until well mixed. Pour the custard over the brioche in the dish and gently press the exposed bread crusts down into the liquid. Sprinkle with the demerara sugar and leave to stand for about 30 minutes (see tip). While the pudding is standing, preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/Gas 4 and grease the dish with a little butter. 4. Half-fill the roasting tin with boiling water, and place the ovenproof dish in this. Bake in the oven for about 40 minutes until golden on top and puffed up. The layers will shrink down a little on cooling. Serve warm with cream.

FOR THE MASH TOPPING 1kg white potato 75g butter 1 splash milk ...parmesan cheese, for grating

8. Mash the potatoes with the butter, milk and a pinch of salt and pepper then spread over the top of the mince. 9. Finely grate over a little parmesan cheese then cook for 45 minutes, or until golden and bubbling. Serve with veg or a simple side salad.

Brioche Bread and Butter Pudding METHOD

Ingredients:

Ingredients 1 x 300g brioche loaf 50g butter, melted, plus extra for greasing 100g sultanas 3 tbsp demerara sugar For the custard: 3 eggs 75g caster sugar 150ml double cream 600ml (1 pint) full-fat milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 small lemon finely grated zest

Remember a Loved One This Christmas with the ‘Light up a Life’ Appeal from Wakefield Hospice Wakefield Hospice is inviting everyone within the community to remember their loved ones this Christmas by dedicating a light on the ‘Tree of Lights’ as part of their annual appeal ‘Light up a Life’. Hundreds of white lights will adorn the tree inside Wakefield Cathedral over the festive period, shining for the loved ones being remembered. Those taking part will receive a personalised ‘Light up a Life’ card from the hospice, featuring the name of the loved one they want to remember. There is no minimum donation and anyone can dedicate a light, whether they have a connection with Wakefield Hospice, or not. Every single donation will help the hospice staff to care for seriously ill people and their families. Last year the ‘Light up a Life’ appeal raised £33,472 which helped to pay for 1,338 hours of nursing care. The name of each person being remembered will appear in the Book of Blessings which will

also be displayed at Wakefield Cathedral until Twelfth Night. The Tree of Lights will be lit at special services being held at Wakefield Hospice on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 December at 6pm and at Wakefield Cathedral on Sunday 5 December at 2pm and 5pm. Speaking about the appeal, Helen Knowles, Director of Income Generation said: “Whilst Christmas is usually a time for people to come together in celebration, it can also be a difficult time for those who have lost loved ones. This year’s ‘Light up a Life’ appeal gives people the opportunity to

remember friends and family who are absent.” “We are doing our utmost to keep patients, staff, families, volunteers and supporters safe during this uncertain time. We need the continued support of our community now more than ever. We hope people will take comfort in our appeal and join us for the services. We are still here, sharing the care for end of life patients.” Three quarters of the hospice’s funding comes from charitable sources and the care they provide is only possible because of the generosity of people’s donations.

Yorkshire Water gives 69,000 customers financial support YORKSHIRE Water has surpassed its financial year target of helping 69,000 customers to pay their bills, just five months into the current financial year. Yorkshire Water has seen an increase in customers using its financial support schemes. The water company has upskilled its staff to support customers in accessing the schemes, as well as increased its partnerships with external organisations, such as debt charities, to ensure it can reach struggling or vulnerable people. Yorkshire Water has four main financial help schemes: • WaterSupport, which helps customers on lower incomes, with income-based benefits, pay water charges • Community Trust, an independent charity at Yorkshire Water supporting customers who have arrears • Watersure, which can help low-income households where there are larger families, or customers who need to use additional water for a medical condition • Resolve, which helps those who are struggling with debt to catch up on previous bills The average saving for a WaterSure customer is £534 a year and for

WaterSupport it is £211.87. Angie Markham-Nock, customer support manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “The coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact on finances for people across the UK – and we have seen a big uptake in customers signing up to our support schemes as a result. “Financial hardship can be very stressful, and we’re so pleased to be able to support our customers so that they don’t have to worry about paying their next bill. “Our team are experts in signposting and explaining the schemes to customers, and we’ve simplified our online application forms to make it even more accessible. We’ve surpassed our annual target just five months into this financial year, and hope to support many more customers over the next seven months and beyond.” For more information visit https://www.yorkshirewater.com/billaccount/help-paying-your-bill

Know your numbers.... What is high blood pressure? If your blood pushes against your blood vessel walls with too much force, it puts a strain on your heart and blood vessels. This is high blood pressure (hypertension). When your heart beats, it pumps blood around your body to give it the energy and oxygen it needs. As the blood moves, it pushes against the sides of the blood vessels. The strength of this pushing is your blood pressure. If your blood pressure is too high, it puts extra strain on your heart and blood vessels. This is called high blood pressure, or hypertension. Over time it can lead to a number of health problems including heart attacks, stroke, kidney disease and some forms of dementia. The good news is there are lots of things you can do to lower it. High blood pressure is very common, about a third of adults in the UK have it, but many aren’t aware of it. It doesn’t usually have any symptoms so the only way to know you have it is to have a blood pressure check. How is blood pressure measured? Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) using a simple machine. When you have it measured it will be written as two numbers, a top number and a bottom number. For example, if your reading is 120/80mmHg, your blood pressure is 120 over 80.

are consistently 140/90mmHg or higher over a number of weeks. This is the cut-off point many GPs use for diagnosing high blood pressure. You might also have high blood pressure if just one of the numbers is higher than it should be – so if the top number is over 140mmHg or the bottom number is over 90mmHg. A single high reading doesn’t necessarily mean you have high blood pressure, as many things can affect your blood pressure throughout the day and it could just be a one-off. If you have a high reading, your doctor or nurse will want to see if it stays high over time before diagnosing high blood pressure. What are the symptoms of high blood pressure? Blood pressure isn’t usually something that you feel or notice. High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so the first sign of it can sometimes be a heart attack or stroke. That’s why it’s called the silent killer. The only way to find out if you have high blood pressure is to have a blood pressure check. Occasionally, people with very high blood pressure have symptoms including: - Headaches - blood shot eyes - feeling sick or generally unwell - Visit your GP if you have any symptoms you’re worried about.

What causes high blood pressure? For many people, there may be no one single cause of their high blood pressure, but lifestyle often plays an important role. Being overweight, eating too much salt, which is often hidden in packaged foods, not being active, drinking too much alcohol and smoking can all raise your blood pressure. Your age, ethnic background, and even your genes could play a role, and sometimes high blood pressure is caused by another health problem such as a kidney problem.

How to set a contactless What's at risk if my card spending cap to card is stolen? While many welcome the added avoid the new £100 limit convenience of the contactless from 15 October limit increasing, some people The contactless card payment limit is rising from £45 to £100 on 15 October. But Bank of Scotland, Halifax, Lloyds and Starling will let you set your own limit, and others plan to do the same in future. Some providers will also let you turn off contactless completely. Here's what you need to know. From 15 October, shoppers will be able to make an in-store purchase of up to £100 without using their PIN. The change comes in following a public consultation and after discussions between the Treasury and regulator the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

report nervousness about the rise as they worry about their exposure to theft on the back of this. Currently, regulations state that providers will prevent contactless payments where you try to spend above the contactless limit, where you've made more than five contactless transactions in a row using the same card, or where the total amount spent since you last had to verify a transaction exceeds £130 (this is changing to £300 from 15 October). However, payment providers do have the ability to set tighter limits than the FCA's maximum. So if you are concerned about

Solar panels – are they worth it? How much can you really save? As well as saving you money on you energy bills, solar panels can also earn you cash. Under a new incentive, suppliers now pay you for any electricity you pump back in the energy grid. But do the sums add up? This guide doesn't constitute legal advice tailored to your individual circumstances. If you act on it, you do so at your own risk.

Solar panel need-to-knows "Solar power? Hang on, we don't live in California!" True, but it's all about daylight, not sunshine. Panels can still generate some electricity on gloomy days, vital when the weather's as dull as watching paint dry. But with the price of solar panels costing an average £4,800, before you stick them on your home, there are a few things you need to understand. 1. Solar panel payments have been revamped – you now only get paid for any excess energy you generate In January 2020, the Government introduced a new scheme to pay households that install solar panels. The scheme, known as the smart export guarantee (SEG), pays households for solar energy they 'export'. This is electricity you generate, but don't use yourself, that is then pumped back into the national energy grid. Of course, you'll also save on your electricty bills as you'll be generating energy yourself, rather than just using electricty from your supplier. The scheme works by requiring certain

fraud and what might happen if someone steals your contactless card, you should think about your contactless limit as if you were carrying cash. Consider how much cash you would feel comfortable carrying around at any one time and set that as your contactless limit if your provider allows you to do so. Of course, if your card is stolen, cancel it as soon as possible and notify your provider. You should also monitor your statement for any suspicious transactions. However, responding to concerns that raising the contactless limit could lead to increased levels of fraud, the Treasury said there was no significant rise in reported fraud

energy suppliers to offer 'tariffs' that pay a set rate for each kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity you export. The amount you get varies by supplier, and you're free to shop around to get the best rates. The SEG isn't as generous as the previous scheme – known as the feed-in-tariff (FIT) scheme – which closed to new applicants in March 2019 and paid households for every unit of electricty generated. But if you're thinking about installing solar panels, you can still save up to £360/yr, and claw back your investment in 15 years depending on your circumstances 2. You need a smart meter to get the smart export guarantee payments To get a SEG tariff, you'll need a smart meter that's capable of tracking how much solar electricity you're exporting to the grid. This includes what's known as 'SMETS 2' meters – the second-generation of smart meters – and certain 'SMETS 1' meters (the first generation). If you're not sure what type of meter your have, you can contact the supplier you're thinking of using for your SEG tariff. It should be able to help you find out what type of meter you have, whether it supports the SEG, or arrange an appointment to get a new meter installed if needed.

What's more, the smart export guarantee is supported by a number of suppliers, as it's mandatory for those with over 150,000 customers. Ofgem has a list of all of them on its website.

5. The further south you live, the more you can make While you don't need a summer home in Hawaii to get some juice from solar panels, the further south you are can make a difference when it comes to their effectiveness. Remember, this is about daylight, not hours of sunshine. Northern homes get slightly less, so where you live needs to be factored in. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that 3. 7. You shouldn't need planning permission You don't generally need planning permission for solar PV systems. The big exceptions are if your property has a flat roof, is listed or in a conservation area. You might need to get approval from your council's building control team, so check with your local authority. In England and Wales, the Government's Planning Portal says that panels are likely to be considered as "permitted development". 8. Solar panels are generally low maintenance The Energy Saving Trust says little maintenance is required on a properly installed, well-designed solar PV system, though you'll likely need to replace the inverter – a gadget which is a key part of the mechanism – within about 25 years (£800ish). Of course, though, things can go wrong. If so, check the installer warranty you get – it can cover you for up to 20 yeas. If the panels are damaged by something unexpected, like a storm, you may also be covered by buildings insurance – check with your insurer before you have them installed. 9. Use your solar panels at the right time and you'll max their value Once you've got your panels installed and they're up and running, make sure you make the most of them by using them at the right time. For example, in the winter, when there's less sunlight and you'll generate less solar power, you'll take more energy from the grid. It's a good idea to set appliances to run while it's light outside, staggering them to max the savings.

We've embarked on a mythbusting mission to see whether the energy efficiency experts think common tricks to cut your usage really work. With energy prices rocketing right now, and with winter on its way, using less is key to saving.

Q. What's the difference between controlling the heating using the thermostat or radiator valves? A. Thermostats control your boiler, while radiator valves control the water flow through each individual radiator. Your thermostat controls your home's temperature, so once it hits the temperature you set on the thermostat, the boiler will go off until the room temperature drops again. Radiator valves are an extra control which you can use to set the temperature of each individual room (other than where your main thermostat is). This means you can set some rooms to be cooler than others if you don't use them very often (saving energy and money). When the temperature in that room rises above what's set on the radiator valve, it will stop water flowing through that particular radiator – the boiler will still be on to heat other rooms, but it will use less energy. Q. If my heating is on, should I keep doors open or closed for each room? A. It's better to keep doors closed for rooms that you don't heat, says the Energy Saving Trust. Radiators, electric panel heaters and convection heaters all work by creating a convection current in a room. As hot air rises, it circles around to the other side of the room, cools and sinks and travels back along the floor to the heater to be reheated again. Closing doors makes sure this current remains within the designated space, and stops cold air entering. Q. Should I leave lights and appliances on, or turn them on and off each time? A. The Energy Saving Trust recommends turning off lights when leaving a room, regardless of how long for, and to be mindful of how many lights you have on at any one time. While turning devices off completely saves energy, the difference can be negligible. So don't bank on this solving all your energy woes. Q. Should I use a tumble dryer, or place washing on an airer with heating on? A. An airer is better because tumble dryers use a lot of energy. Try timing it so you put your washing out on a clothes horse during the hours

your heating comes on. Drying your clothes indoors on an airer can cause problems with condensation and damp, especially in old and poorly-insulated homes, so it is best to dry your clothes outdoors whenever the weather allows. According to the National House Building Council, if you need to dry clothes indoors, open the window and close the door of the room where the clothes are drying, so moisture can escape rather than circulate around your home. Q. Is a combi boiler cheaper to run? A. The Energy Saving Trust says whether a combi or a standard boiler is cheaper to run will depend on your lifestyle and how much hot water you use. With a standard boiler, water is heated by your boiler and stored in a hot water tank for when you need it. With a combi boiler, you don't have a hot water tank and instead water is heated up instantly when you turn on the hot tap. If your household doesn't use too much water, combi boilers can be more efficient, as they don't leave water sitting in a tank where it can lose heat. However, combi boilers tend to be less efficient at heating water in the first place, so if you're a large household using lots of water it might be cheaper to have a standard boiler with a well-insulated tank. The main thing which will affect how expensive your boiler is to run is its efficiency. Having an Arated condensing boiler (standard or combi) will be cheaper to run than an older non-condensing boiler. Q. Should you leave your heating on if you're going away? A. To prevent frozen pipes, which can cause hundreds of pounds of damage, the Energy Saving Trust recommends you leave the heating on to some degree during winter, even if you're not there. Check your home insurance policy before you go away. The rule of thumb is to keep your heating at a minimum 12 degrees, rather than switching it off.

George Michael’s Ex Wins Will Claim Being financially dependent on someone when they are alive, even if you are not named as a beneficiary in the deceased’s Will, can mean you could still be awarded something from the deceased’s estate. This has been made even more clear thanks to a recent settlement agreement between Kenny Goss, a former partner of George Michael, and the trustees of the late singer’s estate. Often, financial dependency raises its head when couples are unmarried, or married but separated or divorced, and one party pays maintenance to the other, however commonly the words written in a Will are taken as gospel and are often left unchallenged. However, as is the case with Kenny Goss, it’s possible to make a claim against the deceased’s estate even though you may have been omitted from their Will.

"What followed was an ongoing legal battle between Goss and the Trustees until now" After George Michael’s death, Kenny Goss issued a lawsuit seeking ‘reasonable financial provision’ from George Michael’s estate under the Inheritance (Provision for

Family and Dependants) Act 1975, stating that he was ‘wholly maintained’ by George prior to his death on Christmas Day in 2016. What followed was an ongoing legal battle between Goss and the Trustees until now. Now that terms have been agreed, Judge Master Kaye has made a Tomlin Order which effectively ends the ongoing court action between Kenny and the Trustees. Whether Michael intended on providing financial provision for Goss is unknown. The omission from his Will would suggest that he had no intention of leaving anything to Goss, but he has now received something.

If you wish to leave something to someone after you die, then be sure to make it clear in your Will. If you leave someone out of your Will, then be sure to make it clear why, but that does not preclude that person from seeking financial provision if they are in financial need. If you feel you have been wrongly left out of a Will then you have the right to ask the Court for financial provision. Either way, it’s strongly advised that you seek legal help and advice on the matter. Here at Thornton Jones, we have a wealth of experience in Will writing and challenging the contents of a deceased’s Will, or claiming financial provision in certain circumstances. WAKEFIELD Life MOTORING E10 petrol: Will I be able to use it in my car? E10 is becoming the standard petrol grade in all UK fuel stations - but what does it mean for you? Earlier this month UK fuel stations began the switch to make E10 their standard petrol grade. Northern Ireland will follow suit early next year as the UK government continue to work towards their target of reaching net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Here, we look to answer some of the questions around E10 petrol, and what it means for drivers in the UK.

What is E10 petrol and why is it being brought to the UK? E10 petrol, containing up to 10% renewable ethanol, is replacing 5% renewable ethanol, known as E5 petrol. The change will help to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and meet UK Government climate change targets. E10 petrol is already widely used across Europe, the United States and Australia.

It's believed its introduction at UK fuel stations could cut transport CO2 emissions by 750,000 tonnes a year – the equivalent of taking 350,000 cars off the road. Will I be able to use E10 petrol in my car? The change in fuel applies to petrol only; diesel fuel will remain the same. The good news is that all new cars manufactured since 2011 are compatible with E10 petrol. Meanwhile, most cars and motorcycles manufactured since the late 1990s are also approved by manufacturers to use E10. You can also check if your vehicle can run on E10 petrol through the Government website here. What if my car isn't compatible with E10 petrol? If your vehicle isn't compatible with

Why paying by phone at McDonald's, KFC and Burger King drive-thrus could land drivers with a £200 fine Drivers have been warned that they could be hit with six points on their licence and a £200 fine if they are caught paying at a drive-thru with their phone. This includes if you get your mobile out to pay for a takeaway at McDonald's, KFC and Burger King. Motorists could fall foul to several driving rules, that many may not even know about, that could land you in hot water with the police. Here is a roundup of some of the fewest known driving laws in the UK and what you need to know.

Paying at a drive-through restaurant with your phone In the age of digital technology, we use our phones as a way of payment, and it’s only natural to whip it out instead of your debit card when making payments, including at a drive-through. However, because using your mobile phone with the engine running is illegal, you could get a £200 fine and six penalty points on your license if you pay with it at a drive-through. Rule 149 states “You MUST exercise proper control of your vehicle at all times. You MUST NOT use a hand-held mobile phone, or similar device, when driving or when supervising a learner driver, except to call 999 or 112 in a genuine emergency when it is unsafe or impractical to stop.” That means, using your debit card instead is something to think about when you’re on your next McDonald's run.

Night time parking If there's one thing that you need to consider when driving at night, it's finding an appropriate place to park. If you’re looking to save money and find a free parking spot, this is where this law could catch you out. Rule 248 in the Highway Code states “You MUST NOT park on a road at night facing against the direction of the traffic flow unless in a recognised parking space.” This is because when a car is parked against that traffic flow, there’s no indication to catch the headlights of an approaching vehicle, and therefore, your car may be a potential hazard to the road.

Unrestrained pets Driving along with unrestrained pets can be a big distraction for you when you're driving. Rule 57 in the Highway Code states “When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.” There isn’t a direct penalty for unrestrained pets, however, the risk is that you could be charged for driving without due care if your pet distracts you - and that’s why it’s important to restrain them properly.

Preparing for snow We’ve all been there when we we're in a rush and don't have time

to remove all the ice and snow from our car, just enough of it to give visibility to the road. But, did you know, it is against Rule 229 in the Highway Code. Rule 229 states “Before you set off you MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows and you MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible.” This means, next time there’s a heavy snowfall, take the time and care to do just that.

Parking on a pavement Finding parking can be a tricky task, especially in busier cities or towns with no available parking spots in sight. It has been illegal to park on London pavements for over 40 years with a small fine to pay if this is the case, however, it isn’t illegal elsewhere in Britain, only if a sign permits it. Rule 244 states “You MUST NOT park partially or wholly on the pavement in London, and should not do so elsewhere unless signs permit it. Parking on the pavement can obstruct and seriously inconvenience pedestrians, people in wheelchairs or with visual impairments and people with prams or pushchairs.”

Splashing a pedestrian Big puddles can amount when rain is heavy and pedestrians can see the brunt of that, with vehicles splashing them as they pass. However, this isn’t actually allowed, and is punishable as it can be seen as careless driving.

E10 petrol, then you can continue to use E5 (97+ octane) petrol, which will remain available in the ‘super’ grade and will be stocked at many larger filling stations. Be sure to always check the label before filling up, but if you accidentally use the wrong petrol, don't panic, you won't need to fully drain your fuel tank. However, prolonged use of the wrong fuel should be avoided as it can cause long-term harm to your vehicle.

both the petrol dispenser and nozzle, making it easy for you to identify the correct petrol to use. Some rural, remote or very small filling stations may sell only either E5 or E10 petrol as standard. However, if your vehicle is compatible with E10 petrol, there’s no reason you can’t mix the two grades of petrol (E5 97+ and E10 95+). It’s perfectly safe to mix them in the same tank or fill up with E5 if E10 is not available.

Where can I find E10 petrol? E10 will be the standard petrol grade in the UK, meaning it will be available at almost all petrol stations across Scotland, England and Wales. It's expected to be introduced in Northern Ireland early next year, subject to legislative approval. At the forecourt, a circular ‘E10’ or ‘E5’ label will be clearly visible on

Online driving licence renewals for over 70s soar as 6 out of 10 now go online DVLA has released new figures showing over 60% of our customers over the age of 70 are choosing to renew their licence online. The latest figures released by DVLA show that around 6 out of 10 over 70 year olds who renewed their driving licence last year did so online. The figures also show that in 2016, just 43% of those renewing their driving licence at the age of 70 or older used DVLA’s online service, compared to over 60% in 2020 – the first year over half of people aged 70 or over preferred to do this online. Driving licence holders aged 70 and over have renewed their licences online almost 5 million times in the last 5 years. There has been a 27% rise in the overall number of licence holders in their 80s completing their renewal online between 2016 to 2020, while the number in their 90s jumped by 41%. Drivers who have applied online had this to say: “Decided to apply on-line for the first time and not being great on the computer. I found the process easy to follow & execute.” “No complications in completing the application, and the new licence arrived within a few days.” “Much more convenient rather than completing on paper where mistakes are difficult to rectify.” “I applied online, everything worked like clock-work; extremely easy procedure.” Driving licence holders are legally

required to renew their licence at 70 and then at most every 3 years after this. It is free to renew a driving licence at 70 or over, and these figures show they are increasingly turning to DVLA’s online service on GOV.UK when they need to do this. Renewing online takes minutes and driving licences are usually issued within 5 days – meaning online will always be the quickest and easiest way to renew. By only using GOV.UK customers can be assured they are dealing directly with DVLA and that their application is secure and safe. Customers who renew their licence online will also receive a confirmation email to notify them that the application has been received. Roads Minister Baroness Vere said: “It is fantastic to see more drivers over the age of 70 choosing to renew their licences online.” The sharp increase in online renewals since 2016 is testament to how quick and easy this process is and I hope the trend will continue as more people choose to experience these benefits for themselves. DVLA Chief Executive Julie Lennard said: “Our online service will always be the quickest and simplest way to renew a driving licence – whatever your age.” With more and more licence holders aged 70 and over choosing to renew online, these figures demonstrate just how convenient our online service is and we are delighted to see more of our customers benefiting from this than ever before. The next time you need to renew your driving licence, our advice is to try the online service and see for yourself just how easy and convenient it is. Customers can find out more about DVLA’s online services at GOV.UK including renewing a driving licence, changing address, or telling DVLA you’ve changed your vehicle.

Energy Myth Busting
