Covid Memorial unveiled A bronze memorial sculpture has been unveiled in Barnsley to commemorate those who have lost their lives or loved ones during the continuing pandemic, as well as serving as a tribute to key workers and unsung heroes. ‘Reverence’ features seven figures cast in bronze, including a young girl, older man, volunteer, nurse, carer, police officer and a teacher. The inspiring figures span all generations and communities and represent the real, ordinary people who have been affected, and continue to be affected, by the pandemic. The unique artwork has been created by acclaimed sculptor Graham Ibbeson in collaboration with Lockbund Foundry, with poet Ian McMillan providing the emotive words ‘Barnsley’s fierce love holds you forever in its heart’. Drawings of key workers by local school children have been turned into a stunning bronze panel, which decorates the plinth. Guests including HM Lord Lieutenant Professor Dame Hilary Chapman, Lord Bishop Sentamu PC of Lindisfarne and Masooli, local MPs and Members of Barnsley Council, together with representatives from the Council and key partners, joined bereaved families, key workers and members of the public in Barnsley’s new Glass Works Square for the unveiling ceremony.

Celebrated gospel singer Janine Dyer opened the event with a rendition of Amazing Grace and there were several speakers and readings, ending with Lord Bishop Sentamu PC of Lindisfarne and Masooli who delivered a message of hope before he and Dame Hilary, together with key workers, unveiled the artwork. The sculpture is one of the first permanent Covid memorials in the world and unique because it features ordinary working people who are hugely under-represented in public art. Council Leader Sir Steve Houghton, CBE said: “This memorial project is an enduring work of art to remember those we’ve lost and to commemorate the incredible efforts of those that worked, and continue to work, so tirelessly to look after us and keep our communities going. “It is a tribute to the real heroes of the pandemic, the ordinary working people of Barnsley and the country as a whole. Working people as a group are vastly underrepresented in public art and we are proud to be at the forefront of recognising them in this sculpture.” Barnsley Hospital Chief Executive Dr Richard Jenkins said: “It’s wonderful to see this tribute to the hard working people of Barnsley who dedicate themselves to serving their community. Everyone working in healthcare has been greatly affected by the pandemic, and it is right to

take time to reflect on the variety of people and professions that have brought us this far.” Sculptor Graham Ibbeson said: “This is a memorial to people who have passed and in recognition of those who keep this country going. It’s a sculpture of hope and will be the first permanent memorial of its type in the country. I was honoured to give my time to be involved with this project.” Ian McMillan said: “I’m proud that this memorial will be a tangible reminder for generations to come of

the terrible times that visited us and how we stared them in the face and, despite terrible losses, carried on.’ ‘Reverence’ is part of a wider project of remembrance and reflection organised by Barnsley Council and partners including Barnsley Hospital, Berneslai Homes and the region’s emergency services. An exhibition linked to the Covid Memorial Project will be on display in the new Gallery@ The Glass Works, allowing for ongoing reflection and messages of commemoration and support.

The first community fridge in Barnsley was launched last week, helping to tackle food waste and supporting those who might need extra help to access food. Set up by the council, with support from The Co-op and environmental charity Hubbub, the community fridge in Darton East will be open to anyone in the community who would like to donate food or have access to it. The community fridge is open to everyone in the community - without any need to be referred or having to prove eligibility - to access fresh food that would otherwise have gone to waste. The food is donated by businesses, with the Co-op donating surplus food from its stores. As well as improving access to food, the fridge goes beyond this by empowering communities to connect with each other and learn new skills through activities such as cookery sessions and workshops on how to grow your own fruit and veg. The fridge, which can be found at Mapplewell and Staincross Village Hall, will be open to enable residents and local businesses to share surplus food and for anyone to help themselves

to quality food that would otherwise be wasted. Donations of unopened, packaged foods within their use-by date and raw fruit or vegetables are also welcome from anyone who would like to donate them. The new fridge builds on the success of the existing 150 fridges in the Community Fridge Network across the country, which redistribute on average almost 6,000 meals per fridge each month. Cllr Jenny Platts, Cabinet Spokesperson for Adults and Communities, said: “Community Fridges are a wonderful concept and we’re delighted to launch the first Community Fridge in Barnsley. Everyone in our communities is welcome to get involved, whether by donating or receiving food, or helping out with volunteering at the fridge. This is a fantastic initiative to encourage our communities to come together, support and learn from one another.” Steve Murrells, Coop Group Chief Executive Officer, said: “Thanks to our members and customers, we’re delighted to be partnering with Hubbub to expand its community fridge network into Barnsley. It’s an innovative scheme to bring communities together, empowering people towards community-led food solutions that will help to build community resilience. “As a co-operative,

we recognise our responsibility to make a genuine difference and have already made a number of interventions to help tackle food poverty and create fairer access to food, through our food share partnerships and our donations to Fareshare. “However, our work in our local communities has shown us that to really make a sustainable difference we need to cooperate with others to build the resilience needed for the future.” Tessa Tricks, Senior Creative Partner at Hubbub, said: “It’s so exciting that the Community Fridge Network is expanding to Barnsley, and we are looking forward to hearing the success stories from the fridge at Darton East. These fridges play a vital role in communities across the UK by not only providing access to good quality food while reducing food waste but by bringing people together to share and learn skills from one another. In the past year, many of the fridges have provided a lifeline to families struggling as a result of the pandemic and we have seen the fridges turn into a place where people come together and support each other to tackle whatever challenges are thrown at them. They really are more than just a fridge.” For more information on the Community Fridge Network, including a map of fridge locations and advice for those interested in setting up a community fridge or getting involved with their local community fridge, visit: www.hubbub.org.uk/thecommunity-fridge.

Notton Woods We discovered the Notton walk during lockdown and I think I have to say it’s definitely one of my favourites, not least because it involves a latte and cake but I’ll get in to that later! I also do like this walk because of the variety and good distance (it’s our cockerpoo, Molly’s favourite too) – just 5k but you can make it as long or short as you like. Park at the village hall at the side of the green and head past the village Post Office and along the lane – you may think it’s just houses or maybe a dead end but walk up past the houses and then you will hear the river to your left alongside woodland. Just five minutes further and then you will walk over a road bridge and it’s here that the lane forks into two. We

take the right fork so that the river is now on the right. The lane narrows to a footpath flanked either side by trees and bushes - Molly loves a good sniff along here! Keep going, past the large barn on the left and you will see a point where the hedges disappear and the shallow river appears. This is where Molly enjoys a good paddle and splash and to be honest, if I’m in wellies, so do I, or I like to sit on the small wooden bridge and dangle my legs while she dashes about. After a joyous ten minutes we head straight on, complete with wet, shaggy dog. Another five minutes and the path naturally veers up a small incline, through a metal gate and the view opens up – a vast field of corn (I think) and woodland in the distance.

Located off the A61 Barnsley Road, between Wakefield and Barnsley

Continue the walk on the path to the left of the field then take the path right into the woodland. The woodland is vast and extremely beautiful and on our last visit a fortnight ago I can’t tell you how much the five year old in me enjoyed swishing through the leaves. You will see how there is a natural circular path through the wood which brings you back to exactly the same place where you enter it. Then make your way back the way you walked; the only difference is once we get back to the river instead of walking on, we go down the river banking and cross a bridge so we walk back on the left side of the river, higher up. This brings you to the lovely point where Molly splashes so that’s where you

cross to get back on the path. This is a delightful walk, fairly flat and plenty to muse the senses but I did say there is latte and cake and I’m ready for it at this point – it’s the village post office. In there you can get a lovely hot drink and cake for £1.99 and sit on one of the two circular tables outside that overlook the green. It’s heaven. Summer or winter, sunshine or cold – it’s just good and so pleasant. The Post Office is a lovely store selling locally produced sweet treats so I usually pick something up to take home too. The store is only open half day on a Sunday so don’t miss out… Enjoy this beautiful walk everyone – perfect for burning off the turkey and sherry!

This month’s review is coming from Darton’s Balti Palace It’s not often my husband and I get the opportunity for a quiet evening so whilst the kids were at football last week we grabbed the chance to go out - only local, Darton Balti Palace. We were delighted to take advantage of their Tuesday/Wednesday mid-week deal; starter, main course and coffee for £11.95 each - cheaper than a takeaway! If you don’t know Darton Balti it’s a small restaurant/takeaway next to the COOP in Darton, in fact whenever I pop into the COOP on an evening the exotic aromas from the Indian always fill the air and tempt my tastebuds. My husband chose the mixed kebab and I can’t tell you how much he enjoyed the crispy onion bahji and soft meat kebabs dipped in raita with fresh salad ( I muscled in for a few bites and it was delicious). I had the king prawns and to be honest I expected them to be sizzling but they came in a bowl like a curry so I enjoyed the prawns then kept the sauce back for our mains. We then shared Royal

chicken and meat bhuna with sides of peshwari naan and pilau rice. I can highly recommend both of these dishes; the meat was soft and the sauce thick and flavoursome with a tomato base and the chicken dish was rich and creamy with spinach running through. I cannot decide between the two and I wouldn’t hesitate to have them again, particularly with the naan dunked into the fingerlicking sauces. Writing this is making my tummy churn thinking about it… We

decided not to have coffee because we were too full but I have to say we left feeling content and feeling that we had just eaten a lovely meal at great value for money. The staff were friendly and

extremely polite and overall it was a great impromptu evening - an evening filled with the charming sounds, smells and tastes of beautiful India.

Is your roof winter ready?

Regular Roof Inspections It’s important that you inspect your roof on a regular basis to ensure it’s sound and in good condition. This is especially important in the run up to winter. Things you should look out for include: • Cracks • Missing, loose or broken tiles • Warped or loose flashing • Clogged gutters and drains • Damage caused by animals • General weathering

Barnsley Hospice is based in Gawber on Church Street, S75 2RL. It has been providing compassionate, specialist care for people in Barnsley with progressive, life-limiting illnesses, and their families, since 1994.

For more information about Barnsley Hospice go to www.barnsleyhospice.org or contact us on 01226 244244 or email enquries@barnsley-hospice.org

Light up a life in memory of a loved one Barnsley Hospice's ‘Light up a Life’ invites the people of Barnsley to dedicate a light on their special trees to the memory of a loved one this Christmas. The hospice's trees, covered with hundreds of twinkling lights, stand outside the hospice and at St Mary’s church in Barnsley town centre. Each light can be dedicated to the memory of someone’s loved one and accompanied by a donation to patient care to support the work of our hospice. Every donation no matter how large of small is appreciated. The annual Light up a Life service, at which its trees are lit, will be shared online again this year due to COVID-19 precautions. It will be available to view via the hospice’s website from Sunday December 12th. Supporters can choose to receive a home pack containing a commemorative card, candle, tree

decoration and badge to help them experience the commemorative service of music and readings in the comfort of their own homes. Dedications will also be recorded in the hospice’s ‘Book of Remembrance' and this will be available to view at St Mary’s Church, weekdays, 9am – 4pm from December 13th until Friday January 6th; and also at the hospice on Saturday January 8th, 4pm – 8pm and Sunday and Monday January 9th and 10th 9am – 4pm. (Please wear a mask when visiting the hospice and follow the hospice's Covid-19 guidance. This popular book of dedications was not available to view last year due to the Covid-19 restrictions and the hospice is pleased to revive this tradition for 2021. Light up a Life is an important part of the hospice calendar and means a lot our patients, families and supporters.

Every donation made alongside a dedication helps us to continue providing care and support for the people of Barnsley. Martine Tune, CEO/Chief Nurse, Barnsley Hospice: “Christmas is a

poignant time of remembrance for many and your lights dedicated to those in your thoughts will shine brightly on our trees again this year.” To find out more, and make a dedication, visit

www.barnsleyhospice.org call 01226 244244 or email fundraising@barnsleyhospice.org. Light up a Life is kindly sponsored by Booker Commercial.

Hospice volunteer urges people to light up a life this Christmas A hospice volunteer who dedicates a light to the memory of her loved ones every Christmas is urging others to join in this beautiful act of remembrance. Sue Stokes has volunteered at Barnsley Hospice for more than 12 years and helps to write the commemorative cards for people who take part in the hospice’s annual Light up a Life campaign. Light up a Life invites hospice supporters to dedicate a light to someone’s memory on their special trees which stand outside the hospice and at St Mary’s church in the town centre. Donations to patient care are made with each dedication. Sue makes her own dedications each year, including one to her sister Christine who died in a road accident 26 years ago, aged just 40, and one to her husband Ron who died suddenly of a heart attack five years later, aged 69.

Sue said: “My husband left home with a kiss and a wave goodbye that morning and died an hour later. My sister was killed in an accident leaving behind two daughters aged 14 and ten. “I think of them constantly but especially at Christmas by taking part in Light up a Life. It gives me the opportunity every year to memorialise them. When the trees are lit up, the impact is beautiful. I search for the little glows of light which stand out and mean something to me and I always find them.” Many people who dedicate a light to a loved one also request a commemorative

card and Sue has always volunteered to write these cards. Sue, who lives in Gawber, said: “When I write the names of other people’s loved ones in a Light up a Life card I do this with great care and take time. Just writing the name is significant and recognises that person’s value. It remembers them and acknowledges how much they mean to someone.” Sue started volunteering at Barnsley Hospice, in part, because of her own bereavements and says Light up a Life is also a very meaningful way to support the charity’s work with the donations which accompany dedications. Sue said: “The hospice supports families going through terrible times every day of the year and Christmas is the time when we can all show our support, whilst at the same time thinking about the people we have lost and those who mean so much to us.”

How to deal with spam text messages Unwanted text messages can be extremely annoying and in many cases a scam. Follow our instructions to put a stop to spam text messages. Is it spam, or a scam? It can be difficult to tell the difference between contact from a legitimate company or an attempted scam. Scammers are increasingly taking advantage of smartphones and are getting very clever with how they try to take your hard-earned money. They can even make it look like a legitimate organisation is contacting you via text or a messaging app by using identity masking technology to change the name displayed as the sender. This is known as ‘number spoofing’. If you get sent am unexpected message, it’s important you're sure it's legitimate. Fraudsters can use many different types of of messaging systems and apps, like SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Viber, Skype, Google Hangouts, Snapchat and many any other platforms to try scam you out of your money.

But what is it? The Barnsley Older People Physical Activity Alliance. Funded by Barnsley Council and led by Age UK Barnsley, it is an alliance of NHS, private and third sector (non-profit) organisations and aims to increase the provision of physical activity programmes that improve the strength and balance of people aged 50 and above across Barnsley. Craft beer: It’s an experience Understanding the sensory side of craft beer gives a deeper appreciation for a beer. It develops to be an experience rather than just ‘a drink’ and provides the opportunity for you to share your knowledge and enthusiasm amongst your peers, enhancing a social environment for many.

Flavour

Is there any other drink in the world that equals craft beer’s diverse range of flavours? Each style offers a spectrum of tastes to enjoy. Sweet, malty, bitter, bready, spicy, sour, fruity, nutty, smoky, chocolatey… and so many that you wouldn’t think possible in a beer! Some flavours linger while It might sound a tad ‘pompous’; if you’re others come and go - often enjoying your drink then what does it referred to as a long or short finish. matter? makes many beers vegan friendly. Isinglass is a fining agent to make a beer clear purely for aesthetics - but it’s a gelatine made from fish’s organs! Many breweries seek alternatives these days but many choose not to filter at all as arguably it retains a lot of the flavour and body. Take a moment to consider the colour, the thickness and the nice foamy head (or lack of depending on style!). In time, you’ll even be able to get a feel for how a beer tastes just by looking at it; the lighter the colour, the lighter the taste. You’ll probably notice that Double IPAs are thicker and more ‘soupy’ than a regular IPA. That New England IPAs are less filtered than a West Coast IPA.

Mouthfeel When tasting, consider how a beer feels in your mouth. It sounds like a strange thing to say, but what do you notice on your tongue? Is it silky? Heavy? Or does it leave your mouth feeling dry? Don’t just gulp it down; hold it for a few seconds and notice

ABV Some of the craft beers’ alcohol content (Alcohol By Volume) can be a bit daunting - but actually, many have found their drinking style adjusts to the higher strength ABV.

Rather than drinking five or six pints of ‘session’ beer at ~4%, two or three at the upper end of the ABV scale is enough - the flavour is to be savoured. Beers are sipped rather than gulped… And of course, with that come fewer trips to the loo!!

Please drink responsibly. www.drinkaware.co.uk Written by Jay Ashton, proprietor of Bottle & Co, Mapplewell

KEEPING YOURSELF WARM OVER CHRISTMAS Feeling snug and cosy can be one of the best things about winter. It’s not just an excuse to settle in with a good book – being warm helps combat certain illnesses and keeps us well when it’s cold. Follow these tips to stay healthy and keep warm indoors and when you’re out and about.

Keeping warm indoors • If you’re sitting down, wrap up with a shawl or blanket. You could even pop your feet up on something, as the air’s cooler at ground level. • If you struggle to stay warm in bed, try wearing warm clothes and, if it’s particularly cold, thermal underwear and bed socks – even a hat can really help you keep warm. • Use a hot water bottle, heat bag or an electric blanket to warm the bed – but never use a hot water bottle and an electric blanket together. • Check if your electric blanket can be kept on all night or whether it’s only designed to warm the bed up before you get in. If you have any continence difficulties, talk to your doctor before using one. • You should get your electric blanket checked every three years by a trusted electrician. The Trading Standards Institute has an online directory you can use to find a trusted trader.

Keeping warm when you’re out and about • Make sure you keep your hands and face warm. If your hands and face get cold this can cause a rise in blood pressure, which puts you at risk of a heart attack. • As well as wearing gloves and a hat, always wrap a scarf around your face when you go out in cold weather, even for short intervals. This helps to warm up the air you breathe in. • Keep your feet warm. As with your hands and face, cold feet can trigger a potentially dangerous rise in blood pressure. Choose shoes (possibly boots) with non-slip soles and a warm lining, or wear thermal socks. • Several thin layers of clothing will keep you warmer than one thick layer, as the layers trap warm air between them. Start with thermal underwear, warm tights or woollen socks. • Check local news and weather reports for advice when bad weather is forecast.

thermostat up to warm your house quickly. • Keep the rooms you spend most time in warm. It might seem obvious, but make the most of individual radiator thermostats and keep the temperature higher in the rooms you are in most. Also make sure you’re not heating rooms you don’t use – you may just want to keep the heating low in these rooms, or turn it off all together.

HEATING YOUR HOME SAFELY • Test your carbon monoxide alarms. You can’t see, taste or smell carbon monoxide, but low exposure can cause longterm health problems, while high exposure can be fatal. • If you’re a private tenant, your landlord must install carbon monoxide alarms for you. • Make sure you have an alarm in each room that has a gas or solid-fuel burning appliance, as these can give off carbon monoxide if they’re not working properly or if the air vents become blocked. • Put guards on open fires, and don’t hang any washing too close to the fire. • Keep air vents clear, as fires need good ventilation. This also prevents condensation. Getting help with heating costs • Contact your local Age UK or Citizens Advice for a benefits check and advice on any other financial support you may be eligible for.

EXTRA HELP WITH HEATING COSTS It can be tempting to keep the heating off and struggle through the cold to keep bills down. But there are benefits and discounts available to help you keep your home warm. Winter Fuel Payment This year, people born on or before 26 September 1955 are entitled to the Winter Fuel Payment in the winter of 2021- 2022 to help with heating costs. This is a tax-free payment of between £100 and £300 paid to you between November and December. If you’re eligible and receive the State Pension, you should receive your payment automatically. However, if you don’t receive the necessary benefits or live abroad, you may need to make a claim. If you’re making a claim for the first time, call the Winter Fuel Payment helpline. You’ll need your National Insurance number and your bank or building society details.

WARM HOME DISCOUNT HEATING YOUR HOME Most of us spend more time indoors over winter, so it’s important you feel comfortable, safe and warm at home without worrying about your heating bills. Keeping your home warm Lower temperatures increase the risk of flu and other breathing problems and can raise your blood pressure. When you’re older, your blood pressure takes longer to return to normal once you get cold, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The colder your home, the higher the risk to your health.

Keeping your home at a safe temperature • Keep your home at a stable, comfortable temperature. • Keep your bedroom window closed at night when the weather is at its coldest. • Close the curtains at dusk to keep the heat in. You may even want to fit thermal linings to them if you can. Using your heating controls • Get to know how to use the timer and thermostat on your heating system. If it’s very cold, set the timer for the heating to come on a bit earlier, rather than turning the

You may be entitled to a Warm Home Discount if you receive the Guarantee Credit part of Pension Credit or if you’re on a low income. It’s a one-off discount on your electricity (or, occasionally, gas) bill, usually made between October and April. If you have a prepayment electricity meter, you can receive the discount as a voucher to top up your meter. Not all energy companies participate in the scheme, so check with your supplier. If you already receive the Warm Home Discount and are thinking about switching supplier, make sure any new supplier also participates. You can go online to find out more at GOV.UK Cold Weather Payment If you receive Pension Credit or other incomerelated benefits, you’re automatically paid a Cold Weather Payment when the temperature is at 0°C/32°F or below for seven days in a row.

"This group is a signal of the success of our other groups in the area and will hopefully make our service even more accessible to the people of Barnsley.

"Suicide and men's mental health are still two of the most stigmatised subjects in society today, and the more locations we can open, the more people we can remind that #ItsOkayToTalk, the more lives we can ultimately save." Cllr Jenny Platts, Cabinet spokesperson for Adults and communities, said: "We're really pleased to be welcoming Andy's Man Club to the borough to provide a talking support group for the men of Barnsley. "It's often said that men don't talk to one another about issues such as mental health, but Andy's Man Club is proving this to be untrue as well as bringing lots of men together to talk to each other about their lives. If you must drive in snowy or icy conditions, make sure you drive accordingly: • Slow down – The risk of skidding is greatly increased and stopping distances will be dramatically more than in normal driving conditions. • Travel at speeds suitable for the conditions – no faster than the speed at which you could safely stop within the distance you can see to be clear. Speed limits are the maximum allowed in ideal conditions – when weather conditions are poor they are often too fast. • Don’t accelerate or brake sharply and use smooth steering inputs. • Reduce your speed smoothly and in plenty of time – this is especially true before bends and corners. • It is important to remember that braking on an icy or snowy bend is highly dangerous. floodwater, drive slowly in first gear. Keep the engine revs high by slipping the clutch to prevent the car stalling. Be aware of bow waves from vehicles approaching in the opposite direction. • Once you exit flood water make sure to test your brakes.

Driving in Fog

Preparing your car RoSPA recommends having your vehicle fully serviced before the winter, making sure that the anti-freeze has been tested and is at the correct concentration. If it is not possible to have your vehicle serviced, you can check carry out the following checks: • Ensure all of the vehicle’s lights are working and are clear of dirt. • The vehicle’s battery is fully charged. • The windows, windscreen and wipers should be clean and in good condition. Make sure that the windscreen washer bottle is full and the centration of the washer fluid is that recommended by the manufacturer for winter use to prevent it freezing. • Condition of the tyres, including tread depths and pressures. Checking the tyre pressures is particularly important as the colder weather will lead to a reduction in pressures. Don’t forget to check the spare wheel too. • Ensure your brakes are working correctly. • All fluid levels should be kept topped up – in particular the windscreen wash, oil and antifreeze.

If you become stuck in a snow drift: • Stay with your vehicle. • Call the breakdown or emergency services and let help come to you. • Don’t run your engine to keep warm.

Driving in Rain Rain reduces visibility and increases the distance required to slow down or stop. In rainy conditions you may need twice the amount of space to stop that you would in dry conditions. Make sure you use dipped headlights and your windscreen wipers and use plenty of time to plan your movements.

Aquaplaning Aquaplaning occurs when driving too fast through standing water. The tread on the tyres cannot clear the water away quickly enough and the vehicle begins to float on top of the water. When this occurs your ability to brake and steer will be greatly reduced. Aquaplaning can be avoided by reducing your speed in wet conditions as well as having the correct tyre pressures and tread depth. If you should find yourself aquaplaning, ease of the accelerator and brakes until your speed drops enough for the tyres to make contact with the road.

During the winter months’ sunshine can cause difficult driving conditions in the same way as poor weather. The angle of the sun in winter can mean it is too low in the sky for your sun visor to help. If you are blinded by glare: • Slow down. • Reduce the effect of glare by making sure both the inside and outside of your windscreen is clean and free of grease. • Make sure to remove your sunglasses as soon as the sun goes in as they will reduce your ability to see.

If you must drive: • Follow the weather forecast and travel advice closely. • Allow plenty of extra time for your journey. • Check your car – in particular its lights – before you begin your journey. • Reduce your speed and keep it down. • Switch on headlights and fog lights if visibility is reduced. • If you can see the vehicles behind you, they can see you. Switch off your rear fog lights to avoid dazzling those behind you. • Use your car’s demister and windscreen wipers. • Don’t ‘hang on’ the rear lights of the car in front as it is likely you will be too close to stop safely if anything should happen. • Switch of distracting noises and open your window slightly so you can hear what is going on around you – this is especially useful at junctions. • Don’t speed up as soon as the visibility improves slightly. Fog is often patchy and visibility could soon be reduced again. • If you breakdown in foggy conditions inform the police and get the vehicle off the road as soon as possible. • Avoid parking on the road in fog and always use some kind of warning light if it is on the wrong-side of the road.

Pogmoor football charity day raises £900 for the Acute Stroke Unit

Photographs: Blueline Photography

Earlier this year, a dear friend of AFC Pogmoor suffered a stroke. Dave, a man who is loved by his regulars at the Tom Treddlehoyle pub and by all of us at the football club, is thankfully now on the road to recovery after what has been a truly awful time. Sadly, almost all of us will know multiple people who have had a stroke, as it is something that affects 100,000 people in the UK each year. In Barnsley, when

someone has a stroke, they are often initially cared for on the Acute Stroke Unit at Barnsley Hospital. It was decided that a charity football match would be held to try to raise money for the Acute Stroke Unit to acknowledge the great care that they provided to our friend Dave, and to so many more people in Barnsley. The opponents would be two teams from within AFC Pogmoor; the newly formed

Poggy AllStars, a group of predominantly over 35s (some significantly over 35 years), against Pogmoor U16 boys (and friends). The game was fantastically well attended with dozens of people watching at pitch side on Pogmoor Rec and then coming together at the Tom Treddlehoyle afterwards. It was the brilliant U16s who won a highly competitive game 4-3, with a winner late in stoppage time to send their

BARNSLEY Life Money Matters

A year of being debt free is far more important than a Christmas splurge Martin Lewis has warned households against splurging this Christmas, while also highlighting the importance of being honest about their finances in a bid to remain debt-free over the festive period and beyond. Accept that you may not be able to afford that 'lust list' and be honest with those around you In response to an audience member on his show, who asked Martin if it's wise to spend above their means through credit cards and buy-now pay-later products this winter, Martin said: "The mistake many people make on

limited budgets about Christmas is they have a lust list - but accept you can't meet this list." Martin also hammered home the importance of being honest and open about your finances with your friends, family and children - especially if they're of the age when they'll understand your financial circumstances. He said: "Be honest to your children about money and cut your cloth accordingly." The best way to understand if you can afford something this Christmas is to plan your budget, said Martin. He said: "The right

More than £74 million in Premium Bond prizes sitting unclaimed – how to check if you've won More than 2 million Premium Bond prizes worth a combined £74 million remain unclaimed, according to the latest figures from NS&I. If you have or have ever had Premium Bonds, here's how to check if you've won. The unclaimed prizes include five worth £100,000 and nine worth £50,000. NS&I, which runs Premium Bonds, has also given MoneySavingExpert.com a breakdown of unclaimed prizes by value and region. A total of 2,079,568 prizes are unclaimed An unclaimed prize is defined as one that hasn't been claimed within 18 months of being won – so there will be other prizes won more recently that are also waiting to be claimed. NS&I says it contacts every winner - this will either be by text, email or post depending on the option you've selected - but sometimes prizes go unclaimed for reasons, such as the letter getting lost in the post or contact details not being updated. As of November 2021, NS&I says there were a total of 2,079,568 unclaimed Premium Bond prizes, worth a total of £74,452,325. There are also another 215,901 prizes waiting to be claimed by people who are either living overseas or whose locations are unknown due to a lack of NS&I data.

Martin also reiterated that staying out of debt is far more worthwhile than splurging and getting back into debt this Christmas. Martin said: "If you can't have a

wonderful Christmas - remember it's only a day - the whole year of being debt-free is far more important."

way to do this is to do a budget and work out how much money you have and then ask what is the best possible Christmas I can have on that amount of money?" And don't forget Martin's Money Mantras before spending: Before spending use Martin’s Mantras. If you answer No to any, then don’t buy! Do I need it? Can I afford it? Will I use it? Is it worth it? Andy Parsons: Healing the Nation 5 Feb 2022 Tickets: £15 Recommended Age: 14+ I was in the middle of a UK Tour when theatres had to close due to lockdown – and the tour was called ‘Healing The Nation’ – so that title worked out well. It will turn out to be the longest Tour ever, taking 3 years to complete, & as the tour has gone on there’s been less and less healing and more and more of the opposite. Admittedly, I could have changed the title but it still seems strangely appropriate - and some of the gigs have been rescheduled so it would prove confusing to existing ticketholders if the ticket said “HEALING THE NATION” but the show was now called “MY LIFE IN BALLET”. So we have the serially rewritten HEALING THE NATION TOUR 2019/2020 now EXTENDED INTO 2021/2022 due to POPULAR DEMAND but also mainly lack of OPEN THEATRES. And with NEGATIVE POWERS OF HEALING.

West stand to close at Oakwell A statement was recently issued by Barnsley Football Club announcing the immediate closure of the 130 year old West Stand due to structual and saftey concerns and crown management issues. The Council inspected the ground on behalf of Oakwell Community Assets Limited (OCAL) as the landlord on 21 September 2021 and found the physical infrastructure (including the West Stand) perfectly safe to host professional football and accommodate fans in all areas to the capacity set out in the current Safety Certificate. The club didn't raise any concerns during this visit. The Safety Advisory Group also undertakes pre-season and inseason inspections to ensure concerns around safety management are addressed. They have recommended a range of remedial measures that the club should action to meet their responsibilities as tenants, but there are no current concerns about the physical infrastructure at the ground. In 2003, the Council stepped up to save the club and help secure its future. The Council has a direct interest in Barnsley Football Club through a 50 per cent shareholding in Oakwell Community Assets Limited

(OCAL), a joint venture partnership with the Cryne family. OCAL owns the stadium and surrounding land. OCAL aspires to make sure Barnsley has a professional football club for the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of the borough. We're somewhat surprised and disappointed for the supporters at the decision that Barnsley Football Club have taken to close the West Stand, and we urge

them to make their desired improvements and get the fans back in as soon as possible. Barnsley FC Chief Executive Officer, Khaled El-Ahmad, said: “The safety and security of supporters and staff is of the utmost importance. I made a promise internally to both staff and fans alike to be transparent regardless of how difficult the news is to share. “The decision is purely based on a structural report and a

number of West Stand specific crowd management challenges. “With the history associated to this stand, in addition to the knowledge that a number of supporters have sat here for consecutive seasons, the Club appreciates both the emotional and practical problems this decision brings. “Please know that we have members of staff working tirelessly to implement solutions in time for our next home game.”
