West stand to close at Oakwell A statement was recently issued by Barnsley Football Club announcing the immediate closure of the 130 year old West Stand due to structual and saftey concerns and crown management issues. The Council inspected the ground on behalf of Oakwell Community Assets Limited (OCAL) as the landlord on 21 September 2021 and found the physical infrastructure (including the West Stand) perfectly safe to host professional football and accommodate fans in all areas to the capacity set out in the current Safety Certificate. The club didn't raise any concerns during this visit. The Safety Advisory Group also undertakes pre-season and inseason inspections to ensure concerns around safety management are addressed. They have recommended a range of remedial measures that the club should action to meet their responsibilities as tenants, but there are no current concerns about the physical infrastructure at the ground. In 2003, the Council stepped up to save the club and help secure its future. The Council has a direct interest in Barnsley Football Club through a 50 per cent shareholding in Oakwell Community Assets Limited

(OCAL), a joint venture partnership with the Cryne family. OCAL owns the stadium and surrounding land. OCAL aspires to make sure Barnsley has a professional football club for the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of the borough. We're somewhat surprised and disappointed for the supporters at the decision that Barnsley Football Club have taken to close the West Stand, and we urge

them to make their desired improvements and get the fans back in as soon as possible. Barnsley FC Chief Executive Officer, Khaled El-Ahmad, said: “The safety and security of supporters and staff is of the utmost importance. I made a promise internally to both staff and fans alike to be transparent regardless of how difficult the news is to share. “The decision is purely based on a structural report and a

number of West Stand specific crowd management challenges. “With the history associated to this stand, in addition to the knowledge that a number of supporters have sat here for consecutive seasons, the Club appreciates both the emotional and practical problems this decision brings. “Please know that we have members of staff working tirelessly to implement solutions in time for our next home game.”

Yorkshire Water has four main financial help schemes: • WaterSupport, which helps customers on lower incomes, with income-based benefits, pay water charges • Community Trust, an independent charity at Yorkshire Water supporting customers who have arrears • Watersure, which can help low-income households where there are larger families, or customers who need to use additional water for a medical condition • Resolve, which helps those who are struggling with debt to catch up on previous bills The average saving for a WaterSure customer is £534 a year and for

Nostell Priory

A couple of weekends ago we visited Nostell and although we’ve been before it’s one of the places where we think ‘why don’t we come here more often…??’ After all it’s on our doorstep and we really should make the most of its beautiful charms, particularly whilst we are having these glorious, late summer sunshine days. Built on the site of a medieval priory, Nostell is an eighteenth century country house with over 300 acres of park to explore, including meadows, lakes, gardens and of course the stately home which houses a great collection of various Chippendale items. There’s plenty of places to wander for free within the grounds for your £5 all day parking (free to National Trust members). We visited on a balmy Sunday afternoon with our dog, Molly when the signs of Autumn were just starting to show off their wonder. On her long lead Molly was able to enjoy snuffling along the various paths and carriageways; first over the bridge, beside the wildflower meadow towards Obelisk Lodge then circle back along the winding paths of the woodland. It’s a beautiful, gentle walk to wander through the dappled sunlight alongside busy squirrels and robins and tumbling conkers. The National Trust café and shop are located in the stables where you can enjoy drinks and snacks al fresco in the courtyard. However, be prepared to wait – we went twice and turned back because of the long queues. It was very disappointing as honestly, I do covet fresh scones but apparently the queues are common so next time we’ll take a thermos and biscuit!

The Royal 315 Barnsley Rd Barugh Green, Barnsley

This month’s review is coming from Barugh Green’s The Royal The Royal at Barugh Green is a real favourite of mine. The cocktails and tapas never disappoint, whether I’m with friends, couples or taking the kids – cosy winter fires in the informal bar or sunny beer garden fun – The Royal is great any time of year. I’ve been a couple of times since the pubs and restaurants reopened and this place has really got it right. The beer garden is covered with a large canvas tepee so even with the rainy spring we’ve just had it’s been an absolute haven sitting under fairy-lit cover to enjoy the scrummy Mediterranean style food (albeit without the Mediterranean climate).

There’s always a lovely bustling atmosphere too – young and old, smart and casual – it’s clear it’s for everyone and everyone enjoys it. So the food… I’ve heard Sunday lunch is lovely but the Tapas is the best I’ve had. There’s an extensive menu to suit everyone but I’ll tell you about some of my favourites. Gambas pil pil are a sizzling mix of garlic and chilli – mopping up the juices with the toasted bread is mouthwateringly good. Slow braised pork cheek with apple puree and black pudding is soft and delicious and so is the braised

pork belly in a barbeque sauce with crackling. The round of baked goats cheese with honey and nuts is a sweet and salty delight. And of course, there’s patatas bravas, paella, meatballs, calamares, croquetas, baby octopus and the Spanish ham and cheese

including Timothy Taylor, Black Sheep, Acorn and Estrella. There’s a full gin list but the cocktails are my go to. There’s bellinis, mojito, martinis, cosmopolitan… platter is absolutely delicious! but my favourite is the BBC – a Look up the menu online if creamy blend of banana, dark you’ve never been and you’ll rum and Baileys – Wow. be surprised and excited by the The Royal couldn’t be more vast array of authentic Spanish perfect at this moment in time dishes. – with few escapes to the sun, Now the drinks… There’s a why not enjoy the flavour of good selection of hand pumps Spain right on our door step. and draft beers and lagers

Energy mythbusting Spend less on gas and electricity Should you keep your heating on all day on low? And what about painting radiators black? We've embarked on a mythbusting mission to see whether the energy efficiency experts think common tricks to cut your usage really work. With energy prices rocketing right now, and with winter on its way, using less is key to saving.

Q. Do phone or laptop chargers still use electricity when plugged in but not connected to a device?

A. Try to unplug chargers when not in use. British Gas says on its website that a lot of chargers use Energy-saving tips 'n' tricks We've answered the questions we can below, but energy when left in a socket (if the charger is as we are experts on MoneySaving, not the warm, it's using energy). Here are the key questions often asked, with their answers below.

Q. Is it cheaper to leave the heating on low all day or turn it on only when I need it?

Q. Will smart meters save me money?

A. No – at least not on their own. Smart meters simply replace your existing gas and electricity meters (one for each), measure your usage and A. This is a hotly debated one. Q. What's the difference between controlling the heating using the thermostat or radiator valves? A. Thermostats control your boiler, while radiator valves control the water flow through each individual radiator. Your thermostat controls your home's temperature, so once it hits the temperature you set on the thermostat, the boiler will go off until the room temperature drops again. Radiator valves are an extra control which you can use to set the temperature of each individual room (other than where your main thermostat is). This means you can set some rooms to be cooler than others if you don't use them very often (saving energy and money). When the temperature in that room rises above what's set on the radiator valve, it will stop water flowing through that particular radiator – the boiler will still be on to heat other rooms, but it will use less energy. Q. If my heating is on, should I keep doors open or closed for each room? A. It's better to keep doors closed for rooms that you don't heat, says the Energy Saving Trust. Radiators, electric panel heaters and convection heaters all work by creating a convection current in a room. As hot air rises, it circles around to the other side of the room, cools and sinks and travels back along the floor to the heater to be reheated again. Closing doors makes sure this current remains within the designated space, and stops cold air entering. Q. Should I leave lights and appliances on, or turn them on and off each time? A. The Energy Saving Trust recommends turning off lights when leaving a room, regardless of how long for, and to be mindful of how many lights you have on at any one time. While turning devices off completely saves energy, the difference can be negligible. So don't bank on this solving all your energy woes. Q. Should I use a tumble dryer, or place washing on an airer with heating on? A. An airer is better because tumble dryers use a lot of energy. Try timing it so you put your washing out on a clothes horse during the hours

your heating comes on. Drying your clothes indoors on an airer can cause problems with condensation and damp, especially in old and poorly-insulated homes, so it is best to dry your clothes outdoors whenever the weather allows. According to the National House Building Council, if you need to dry clothes indoors, open the window and close the door of the room where the clothes are drying, so moisture can escape rather than circulate around your home. Q. Is a combi boiler cheaper to run? A. The Energy Saving Trust says whether a combi or a standard boiler is cheaper to run will depend on your lifestyle and how much hot water you use. With a standard boiler, water is heated by your boiler and stored in a hot water tank for when you need it. With a combi boiler, you don't have a hot water tank and instead water is heated up instantly when you turn on the hot tap. If your household doesn't use too much water, combi boilers can be more efficient, as they don't leave water sitting in a tank where it can lose heat. However, combi boilers tend to be less efficient at heating water in the first place, so if you're a large household using lots of water it might be cheaper to have a standard boiler with a well-insulated tank. The main thing which will affect how expensive your boiler is to run is its efficiency. Having an Arated condensing boiler (standard or combi) will be cheaper to run than an older non-condensing boiler. Q. Should you leave your heating on if you're going away? A. To prevent frozen pipes, which can cause hundreds of pounds of damage, the Energy Saving Trust recommends you leave the heating on to some degree during winter, even if you're not there. Check your home insurance policy before you go away. The rule of thumb is to keep your heating at a minimum 12 degrees, rather than switching it off.

Barnsley Hospice is based in Gawber on Church Street, S75 2RL. It has been providing compassionate, high-quality care for people in Barnsley with progressive, life-limiting illnesses, and their families, since 1994.

For more information about Barnsley Hospice go to www.barnsleyhospice.org Media contact: Steph Pollard, steph@whippetper.co.uk or 07761 964492.

Hospice nurse hits the ground running to celebrate 40 years in nursing A Barnsley Hospice nurse took part in the Great North Run to celebrate 40 years in nursing. Zoe Goddard swapped her nurse’s uniform for a running vest and trainers to tackle the iconic 13-mile race in Newcastle. This year’s race mirrored her nursing achievement as it also celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Zoe took on the race once before and vowed she'd never do it again, however the recent passing of her sister who was a great supporter of the hospice made her change her mind. Zoe said: “I’m back here doing this once more as I am so passionate about the hospice and the work that we do.

“I thought there was no better time to do it, as it is the 40th anniversary of the race, and I am going into my 40th year of nursing. I was also especially thinking of my late sister, a great supporter of the hospice, whose birthday it would have been in September too." A total of 25 people took part in the Great North Run to raise

money for the hospice. Barnsley Hospice needs to raise nearly £2m each year to fund patient care and support for families. It relies entirely on fundraising and donations to achieve this amount. Additional funding is provided to the hospice by the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

Barnsley Hospice receives £3,000 donation in memory of Duke of Edinburgh Barnsley Hospice has received a donation of £3,000 from the Freemasons as part of a national scheme celebrating the life of the Duke of Edinburgh. The money has been donated by the Mark Benevolent Fund, which is the official charity of the Grand Lodge of Mark Master

Masons. It is part of £1.3 million fund being given away to over 250 hospices throughout England and Wales as a tribute to Prince Phillip, who was a lifelong supporter of the hospice movement. Barnsley resident John Sealey, a member of the

Lightcliffe Mark Masons and long-standing supporter of the hospice, presented the donation. Janet O’Hara, the hospice's grants, trusts and legacies fundraiser said: “We are delighted that Freemasons continue to support the hospice

with such a generous contribution to our running costs. Donations such as this one will help us to maintain and grow our services, to best

support the people of Barnsley.” Barnsley Hospice needs to raise nearly £2m each year to fund patient care and support for families. It relies entirely on

SMALL CHANGE MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE Could you display a hospice collection tin in your workplace, shop or venue? Barnsley Hospice is appealing for more businesses to host one of their collection boxes. Vicky Stead, of the fundraising team, said: “On average, our collection boxes

help to bring in around £25,000 a year, which is a huge help to our hospice and the services we provide. We’d love to hear from more businesses who could help by taking a box. Their customers’ donations of small change can make such a big difference.”

First Facebook challenge raises over £40,000 Barnsley Hospice’s first ever Facebook Challenge got 350 people walking over 35,000 miles in total around Barnsley this summer. The 100 Miles in July sponsored challenge raised a phenomenal £41,000 in sponsorship for the hospice. Over 350 people dusted off their walking boots, dug out their trainers, and walked or ran 100 miles each during the month. Everyone supported each other and shared progress reports in a dedicated

fundraising Facebook group. Inpatient Unit ward sister, Janine Blackburn, said: “We would really like to thank everybody who contributed to the 100 Miles in July challenge total, because that amount of money makes such a massive difference to the way we can look after our patients, here at Barnsley Hospice.” As well as supporters in the community taking part, several hospice staff also committed to fitting in 100 miles around their work

Hopice nurse Michelle Outhwaite said: “As a palliative care nurse, I have found reading and sharing stories in the Facebook 100 Miles challenge group and coming together to support local people and families to raise funds to support Barnsley Hospice an absolute privilege. The donations and efforts made, even in isolation have been humbling and have motivated me every step of the way in this challenge and in my work.”

Have your say on proposed changes to council tax support We are currently considering changes to our Council Tax Support Scheme and we want to hear the views of people living across Barnsley. Our online consultation is now live, giving residents an opportunity to feedback on our proposals for the 2022/23 Council Tax Support Scheme. With this year’s scheme, government funding has enabled us to offer enhanced financial support to those who need it most. We want to extend the current scheme into next year, with it now being

funded by the council. As part of our proposals, we’re also considering extending the scheme’s benefits to protect those who are eligible for support from any potential future rise in council tax. The consultation only takes a few minutes to complete and will be running until 31 October. Councillor Alan Gardiner, Cabinet Spokesperson for Core Services, said: “We are proud that our Council Tax Support Scheme has been able to offer enhanced support to those that need it most this year. We want to

see this level of support remain in place, which is why we are proposing to use council funds to extend our enhanced support. “I would encourage residents to see what we’re proposing and have their say. This way, we can use your feedback to inform our final plans for next year’s scheme.” Council tax support is a discount from your council tax bill designed to help working age people on low incomes and benefits. You can find full details of the current Council Tax Support Scheme on our website.

Traditional English Cottage Pie

400ml beef stock 50g butter 2 onions, peeled and finely chopped 2 carrots, peeled and finely diced 2 celery, trimmed and finely diced 3 garlic cloves 1 sprig fresh thyme 1 bay leaf 1kg minced beef (ground beef) 2 tablespoons tomato puree 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 4 drops Tabasco sauce 175ml red wine

METHOD 1. Melt the butter in a pan on a medium heat. Add the onion, carrot, celery, garlic, thyme and bay leaf and fry over a medium/low heat for 10 minutes, or until softened but not coloured. 2. Add the beef mince and cook for a further 10 minutes, or until brown. 3. Add the tomato purée, worcestershire sauce and Tabasco, then stir and cook for 2 minutes. 4. Turn the heat up to high and add the red wine. Let it bubble away and reduce for 5 minutes then add the stock and reduce to a medium heat. Simmer for a further 20 minutes, stirring often. 5. Meanwhile, cut the potatoes into halves and quarters so they’re all a fairly even size. Cook in a pan of boiling, salted water for 15 to 20 minutes, or until cooked through. Drain in a colander and leave to steam dry. 6. Preheat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5.

7. Taste the mince and season accordingly with salt and pepper. Transfer it to an ovenproof dish (approximately 20cm by 30cm).

1. You will need a 28cm (11in) wide-based round ovenproof dish, and a roasting tin large enough to place it in. 2. Cut the brioche loaf into 1.5cm (⅝in) slices and brush each slice with melted butter on both sides. Arrange the slices in a spiral in the buttered dish and scatter over the sultanas. 3. To make the custard, place all the ingredients in a large bowl and whisk together by hand until well mixed. Pour the custard over the brioche in the dish and gently press the exposed bread crusts down into the liquid. Sprinkle with the demerara sugar and leave to stand for about 30 minutes (see tip). While the pudding is standing, preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/Gas 4 and grease the dish with a little butter. 4. Half-fill the roasting tin with boiling water, and place the ovenproof dish in this. Bake in the oven for about 40 minutes until golden on top and puffed up. The layers will shrink down a little on cooling. Serve warm with cream.

FOR THE MASH TOPPING 1kg white potato 75g butter 1 splash milk ...parmesan cheese, for grating

8. Mash the potatoes with the butter, milk and a pinch of salt and pepper then spread over the top of the mince. 9. Finely grate over a little parmesan cheese then cook for 45 minutes, or until golden and bubbling. Serve with veg or a simple side salad.

Brioche Bread and Butter Pudding METHOD

Ingredients:

Ingredients 1 x 300g brioche loaf 50g butter, melted, plus extra for greasing 100g sultanas 3 tbsp demerara sugar For the custard: 3 eggs 75g caster sugar 150ml double cream 600ml (1 pint) full-fat milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 small lemon finely grated zest

Do you think it's #BangOutOfOrder? We want to change firework regulations to make them safer for animals. In the last four years, we've received a total of 1,543 calls about fireworks and their effects on animals. This year due to coronavirus restrictions and organised events being cancelled, a recent poll has confirmed 18% more people in England and Wales will be holding private displays in their back gardens. The increased number of private firework displays means we could see more calls coming in about animals and fireworks. High numbers of pets affected by fireworks Around 62% of dogs show signs of distress during fireworks. This alone means thousands of animals are affected by unplanned and random fireworks each year. Results also saw other animals showing distress during fireworks: 54% of cats 55% of horses The British Horse Society reports

Know your numbers.... What is high blood pressure? If your blood pushes against your blood vessel walls with too much force, it puts a strain on your heart and blood vessels. This is high blood pressure (hypertension). When your heart beats, it pumps blood around your body to give it the energy and oxygen it needs. As the blood moves, it pushes against the sides of the blood vessels. The strength of this pushing is your blood pressure. If your blood pressure is too high, it puts extra strain on your heart and blood vessels. This is called high blood pressure, or hypertension. Over time it can lead to a number of health problems including heart attacks, stroke, kidney disease and some forms of dementia. The good news is there are lots of things you can do to lower it. High blood pressure is very common, about a third of adults in the UK have it, but many aren’t aware of it. It doesn’t usually have any symptoms so the only way to know you have it is to have a blood pressure check. How is blood pressure measured? Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) using a simple machine. When you have it measured it will be written as two numbers, a top number and a bottom number. For example, if your reading is 120/80mmHg, your blood pressure is 120 over 80.

are consistently 140/90mmHg or higher over a number of weeks. This is the cut-off point many GPs use for diagnosing high blood pressure. You might also have high blood pressure if just one of the numbers is higher than it should be – so if the top number is over 140mmHg or the bottom number is over 90mmHg. A single high reading doesn’t necessarily mean you have high blood pressure, as many things can affect your blood pressure throughout the day and it could just be a one-off. If you have a high reading, your doctor or nurse will want to see if it stays high over time before diagnosing high blood pressure. What are the symptoms of high blood pressure? Blood pressure isn’t usually something that you feel or notice. High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so the first sign of it can sometimes be a heart attack or stroke. That’s why it’s called the silent killer. The only way to find out if you have high blood pressure is to have a blood pressure check. Occasionally, people with very high blood pressure have symptoms including: - Headaches - blood shot eyes - feeling sick or generally unwell - Visit your GP if you have any symptoms you’re worried about.

What causes high blood pressure? For many people, there may be no one single cause of their high blood pressure, but lifestyle often plays an important role. Being overweight, eating too much salt, which is often hidden in packaged foods, not being active, drinking too much alcohol and smoking can all raise your blood pressure. Your age, ethnic background, and even your genes could play a role, and sometimes high blood pressure is caused by another health problem such as a kidney problem.

GETTING THE BALANCE RIGHT! One of the main priorities at Age UK Barnsley is to help as many people as possible to make the most of later life. And when they say later life, that’s anyone over the age of 50. Many people think that the charity is for people older than themselves. That’s just not true, getting the most out of life is important to all of us and some older people are brilliant at it. The Active in Barnsley Partnership’s website www.barnsleywhatsyourmove.co.u k is a great source of information and inspiration. What's Your Move is about helping Barnsley to be more active for good physical and mental health. There's something for all of us out there that will help us move more. No matter how little or large every move counts. Barnsley Council’s Live Well Barnsley website is also a great resource www.livewellbarnsley.co.uk which enables people to search for

activities and events around where they live, and it’s not just physical activities it includes social and community groups too. Age UK Barnsley is very aware that not everybody has access to the internet and has put together a booklet of ‘Exercise and Physical Health Opportunities for Older People in Barnsley’ which is available from their offices at Queen Road, Barnsley or ring 01226 776820. They can also provide copies of Barnsley Council’s useful FallProof leaflet and Able like Mabel booklet. They also have Social Inclusion Workers working on the ground across Barnsley who would be happy to advise anyone over 50 of the local opportunities available. Why the emphasis on physical activity and getting out and about generally? Jane Holliday, the CEO of Age UK Barnsley had this to say: ‘The pandemic has knocked

many people back health wise. Exercise at home or elsewhere and just being active outside can have such a positive effect on restoring people’s balance, mobility and general confidence. That’s why encouraging people and making it easier for them to join in things is so important.’ Returning to the theme of making the most of later life watch out for a series of events later this year around International Older People’s Day on 1st October. Those involved in Age Friendly Barnsley will be looking to celebrate that very thing.

The photo shows some of the intrepid Age UK Barnsley/Walk Well Barnsley Wombwell Walking Group enjoying the fresh air and blue skies.

BARNSLEY Life MOTORING E10 petrol: Will I be able to use it in my car? E10 is becoming the standard petrol grade in all UK fuel stations - but what does it mean for you? Earlier this month UK fuel stations began the switch to make E10 their standard petrol grade. Northern Ireland will follow suit early next year as the UK government continue to work towards their target of reaching net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Here, we look to answer some of the questions around E10 petrol, and what it means for drivers in the UK.

What is E10 petrol and why is it being brought to the UK? E10 petrol, containing up to 10% renewable ethanol, is replacing 5% renewable ethanol, known as E5 petrol. The change will help to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and meet UK Government climate change targets. E10 petrol is already widely used across Europe, the United States and Australia.

It's believed its introduction at UK fuel stations could cut transport CO2 emissions by 750,000 tonnes a year – the equivalent of taking 350,000 cars off the road. Will I be able to use E10 petrol in my car? The change in fuel applies to petrol only; diesel fuel will remain the same. The good news is that all new cars manufactured since 2011 are compatible with E10 petrol. Meanwhile, most cars and motorcycles manufactured since the late 1990s are also approved by manufacturers to use E10. You can also check if your vehicle can run on E10 petrol through the Government website here. What if my car isn't compatible with E10 petrol? If your vehicle isn't compatible with

Why paying by phone at McDonald's, KFC and Burger King drive-thrus could land drivers with a £200 fine Drivers have been warned that they could be hit with six points on their licence and a £200 fine if they are caught paying at a drive-thru with their phone. This includes if you get your mobile out to pay for a takeaway at McDonald's, KFC and Burger King. Motorists could fall foul to several driving rules, that many may not even know about, that could land you in hot water with the police. Here is a roundup of some of the fewest known driving laws in the UK and what you need to know.

Paying at a drive-through restaurant with your phone In the age of digital technology, we use our phones as a way of payment, and it’s only natural to whip it out instead of your debit card when making payments, including at a drive-through. However, because using your mobile phone with the engine running is illegal, you could get a £200 fine and six penalty points on your license if you pay with it at a drive-through. Rule 149 states “You MUST exercise proper control of your vehicle at all times. You MUST NOT use a hand-held mobile phone, or similar device, when driving or when supervising a learner driver, except to call 999 or 112 in a genuine emergency when it is unsafe or impractical to stop.” That means, using your debit card instead is something to think about when you’re on your next McDonald's run.

Night time parking If there's one thing that you need to consider when driving at night, it's finding an appropriate place to park. If you’re looking to save money and find a free parking spot, this is where this law could catch you out. Rule 248 in the Highway Code states “You MUST NOT park on a road at night facing against the direction of the traffic flow unless in a recognised parking space.” This is because when a car is parked against that traffic flow, there’s no indication to catch the headlights of an approaching vehicle, and therefore, your car may be a potential hazard to the road.

Unrestrained pets Driving along with unrestrained pets can be a big distraction for you when you're driving. Rule 57 in the Highway Code states “When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.” There isn’t a direct penalty for unrestrained pets, however, the risk is that you could be charged for driving without due care if your pet distracts you - and that’s why it’s important to restrain them properly.

Preparing for snow We’ve all been there when we we're in a rush and don't have time

to remove all the ice and snow from our car, just enough of it to give visibility to the road. But, did you know, it is against Rule 229 in the Highway Code. Rule 229 states “Before you set off you MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows and you MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible.” This means, next time there’s a heavy snowfall, take the time and care to do just that.

Parking on a pavement Finding parking can be a tricky task, especially in busier cities or towns with no available parking spots in sight. It has been illegal to park on London pavements for over 40 years with a small fine to pay if this is the case, however, it isn’t illegal elsewhere in Britain, only if a sign permits it. Rule 244 states “You MUST NOT park partially or wholly on the pavement in London, and should not do so elsewhere unless signs permit it. Parking on the pavement can obstruct and seriously inconvenience pedestrians, people in wheelchairs or with visual impairments and people with prams or pushchairs.”

Splashing a pedestrian Big puddles can amount when rain is heavy and pedestrians can see the brunt of that, with vehicles splashing them as they pass. However, this isn’t actually allowed, and is punishable as it can be seen as careless driving.

E10 petrol, then you can continue to use E5 (97+ octane) petrol, which will remain available in the ‘super’ grade and will be stocked at many larger filling stations. Be sure to always check the label before filling up, but if you accidentally use the wrong petrol, don't panic, you won't need to fully drain your fuel tank. However, prolonged use of the wrong fuel should be avoided as it can cause long-term harm to your vehicle.

Follow us on Facebook

both the petrol dispenser and nozzle, making it easy for you to identify the correct petrol to use. Some rural, remote or very small filling stations may sell only either E5 or E10 petrol as standard. However, if your vehicle is compatible with E10 petrol, there’s no reason you can’t mix the two grades of petrol (E5 97+ and E10 95+). It’s perfectly safe to mix them in the same tank or fill up with E5 if E10 is not available.

Where can I find E10 petrol? E10 will be the standard petrol grade in the UK, meaning it will be available at almost all petrol stations across Scotland, England and Wales. It's expected to be introduced in Northern Ireland early next year, subject to legislative approval. At the forecourt, a circular ‘E10’ or ‘E5’ label will be clearly visible on

Online driving licence renewals for over 70s soar as 6 out of 10 now go online DVLA has released new figures showing over 60% of our customers over the age of 70 are choosing to renew their licence online. The latest figures released by DVLA show that around 6 out of 10 over 70 year olds who renewed their driving licence last year did so online. The figures also show that in 2016, just 43% of those renewing their driving licence at the age of 70 or older used DVLA’s online service, compared to over 60% in 2020 – the first year over half of people aged 70 or over preferred to do this online. Driving licence holders aged 70 and over have renewed their licences online almost 5 million times in the last 5 years. There has been a 27% rise in the overall number of licence holders in their 80s completing their renewal online between 2016 to 2020, while the number in their 90s jumped by 41%. Drivers who have applied online had this to say: “Decided to apply on-line for the first time and not being great on the computer. I found the process easy to follow & execute.” “No complications in completing the application, and the new licence arrived within a few days.” “Much more convenient rather than completing on paper where mistakes are difficult to rectify.” “I applied online, everything worked like clock-work; extremely easy procedure.” Driving licence holders are legally

required to renew their licence at 70 and then at most every 3 years after this. It is free to renew a driving licence at 70 or over, and these figures show they are increasingly turning to DVLA’s online service on GOV.UK when they need to do this. Renewing online takes minutes and driving licences are usually issued within 5 days – meaning online will always be the quickest and easiest way to renew. By only using GOV.UK customers can be assured they are dealing directly with DVLA and that their application is secure and safe. Customers who renew their licence online will also receive a confirmation email to notify them that the application has been received. Roads Minister Baroness Vere said: “It is fantastic to see more drivers over the age of 70 choosing to renew their licences online.” The sharp increase in online renewals since 2016 is testament to how quick and easy this process is and I hope the trend will continue as more people choose to experience these benefits for themselves. DVLA Chief Executive Julie Lennard said: “Our online service will always be the quickest and simplest way to renew a driving licence – whatever your age.” With more and more licence holders aged 70 and over choosing to renew online, these figures demonstrate just how convenient our online service is and we are delighted to see more of our customers benefiting from this than ever before. The next time you need to renew your driving licence, our advice is to try the online service and see for yourself just how easy and convenient it is. Customers can find out more about DVLA’s online services at GOV.UK including renewing a driving licence, changing address, or telling DVLA you’ve changed your vehicle.

How to set a contactless What's at risk if my card spending cap to card is stolen? While many welcome the added avoid the new £100 limit convenience of the contactless from 15 October limit increasing, some people The contactless card payment limit is rising from £45 to £100 on 15 October. But Bank of Scotland, Halifax, Lloyds and Starling will let you set your own limit, and others plan to do the same in future. Some providers will also let you turn off contactless completely. Here's what you need to know. From 15 October, shoppers will be able to make an in-store purchase of up to £100 without using their PIN. The change comes in following a public consultation and after discussions between the Treasury and regulator the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

report nervousness about the rise as they worry about their exposure to theft on the back of this. Currently, regulations state that providers will prevent contactless payments where you try to spend above the contactless limit, where you've made more than five contactless transactions in a row using the same card, or where the total amount spent since you last had to verify a transaction exceeds £130 (this is changing to £300 from 15 October). However, payment providers do have the ability to set tighter limits than the FCA's maximum. So if you are concerned about

Solar panels – are they worth it? How much can you really save? As well as saving you money on you energy bills, solar panels can also earn you cash. Under a new incentive, suppliers now pay you for any electricity you pump back in the energy grid. But do the sums add up? This guide doesn't constitute legal advice tailored to your individual circumstances. If you act on it, you do so at your own risk.

Solar panel need-to-knows "Solar power? Hang on, we don't live in California!" True, but it's all about daylight, not sunshine. Panels can still generate some electricity on gloomy days, vital when the weather's as dull as watching paint dry. But with the price of solar panels costing an average £4,800, before you stick them on your home, there are a few things you need to understand. 1. Solar panel payments have been revamped – you now only get paid for any excess energy you generate In January 2020, the Government introduced a new scheme to pay households that install solar panels. The scheme, known as the smart export guarantee (SEG), pays households for solar energy they 'export'. This is electricity you generate, but don't use yourself, that is then pumped back into the national energy grid. Of course, you'll also save on your electricty bills as you'll be generating energy yourself, rather than just using electricty from your supplier. The scheme works by requiring certain

fraud and what might happen if someone steals your contactless card, you should think about your contactless limit as if you were carrying cash. Consider how much cash you would feel comfortable carrying around at any one time and set that as your contactless limit if your provider allows you to do so. Of course, if your card is stolen, cancel it as soon as possible and notify your provider. You should also monitor your statement for any suspicious transactions. However, responding to concerns that raising the contactless limit could lead to increased levels of fraud, the Treasury said there was no significant rise in reported fraud

energy suppliers to offer 'tariffs' that pay a set rate for each kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity you export. The amount you get varies by supplier, and you're free to shop around to get the best rates. The SEG isn't as generous as the previous scheme – known as the feed-in-tariff (FIT) scheme – which closed to new applicants in March 2019 and paid households for every unit of electricty generated. But if you're thinking about installing solar panels, you can still save up to £360/yr, and claw back your investment in 15 years depending on your circumstances 2. You need a smart meter to get the smart export guarantee payments To get a SEG tariff, you'll need a smart meter that's capable of tracking how much solar electricity you're exporting to the grid. This includes what's known as 'SMETS 2' meters – the second-generation of smart meters – and certain 'SMETS 1' meters (the first generation). If you're not sure what type of meter your have, you can contact the supplier you're thinking of using for your SEG tariff. It should be able to help you find out what type of meter you have, whether it supports the SEG, or arrange an appointment to get a new meter installed if needed.

spending limit when verified through biometric technology, such as fingerprint or facial recognition. However, a retailer or your card provider itself – if you link mobile payments to your card – may still put limits in place that override this. Apple Pay says that when the limit was raised from £30 given it doesn't set the limits itself, to £45 last year. It added that you'd need to ask your card reported fraud equated to 0.02% of provider whether you can put a cap the total spent using contactless on this type of spending. cheaper bill. Your energy supplier doesn't need to be the same as the supplier that pays for your solargenerated energy, so you're free to switch. What's more, the smart export guarantee is supported by a number of suppliers, as it's mandatory for those with over 150,000 customers. Ofgem has a list of all of them on its website.

5. The further south you live, the more you can make While you don't need a summer home in Hawaii to get some juice from solar panels, the further south you are can make a difference when it comes to their effectiveness. Remember, this is about daylight, not hours of sunshine. Northern homes get slightly less, so where you live needs to be factored in. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that 3. A south-facing roof will work best panels in Manchester could save you between To maximise what your panels can make, you £95 and £230 each year on your electricity usually need a predominantly south-facing bills, compared with around £100-£240 in roof. If your roof faces south-west or west you'll still get some benefit, but it may be less London and £90-£220 a year in Stirling. effective and you might not get the maximum 6. 7. You shouldn't need planning permission You don't generally need planning permission for solar PV systems. The big exceptions are if your property has a flat roof, is listed or in a conservation area. You might need to get approval from your council's building control team, so check with your local authority. In England and Wales, the Government's Planning Portal says that panels are likely to be considered as "permitted development". 8. Solar panels are generally low maintenance The Energy Saving Trust says little maintenance is required on a properly installed, well-designed solar PV system, though you'll likely need to replace the inverter – a gadget which is a key part of the mechanism – within about 25 years (£800ish). Of course, though, things can go wrong. If so, check the installer warranty you get – it can cover you for up to 20 yeas. If the panels are damaged by something unexpected, like a storm, you may also be covered by buildings insurance – check with your insurer before you have them installed. 9. Use your solar panels at the right time and you'll max their value Once you've got your panels installed and they're up and running, make sure you make the most of them by using them at the right time. For example, in the winter, when there's less sunlight and you'll generate less solar power, you'll take more energy from the grid. It's a good idea to set appliances to run while it's light outside, staggering them to max the savings.
