Wakefield Life - December/January 2020 P3

Welcome to the Christmas Issue Welcome to the Dec-Jan issue of Wakefield Life. As we come to the close of the year, it’s unlikely many of us will forget what a difficult year 2020 has been, with the difficulties manifesting in different ways. Human tragedy has been very hard to witness, with losses, isolation and emotional difficulties experienced by too many people. Many businesses, families and individuals have suffered financial hardship that could take years to recover from and it seems that some of the big corporations have boomed at the expense of the little independents. But there have been positives for some… there appears to be a renewed sense of community, an enthusiasm for supporting small independent local businesses and many have experienced a more flexible way of living. Although most people want to ‘get back to normal’ as soon as possible, it was nice for a short while to hit the pause button and for life to move along more slowly, to hear nature without the drone of vehicles and for families to spend more time together.

For those who have suffered heartache and hardship during this year, my heart truly goes out to you. We can only hope that 2021 brings hope, positivity and more stability. To all our readers, we wish you a lovely Christmas, however you are celebrating, and a more hopeful 2021. Stay safe, Caron

Do you know what the ‘ICE’ Number is? Do you have one? The ICE number is the brainchild of British paramedic Bob Brotchie, employed by the East Anglian Ambulance NHS Trust. In the course of his experience, Brothchie had discovered that, though the majority of accident victims carried no next of kin details, over 80% carried a mobile phone. Reflecting on some difficult situations he had dealt with, where victims were unable to speak through injury, it occurred to him that a uniform approach for identifying an emergency contact on a mobile phone would make life easier for everyone. As well as the quick identification of a contact, emergency services could be sure that the number related to a person who the accident victim would want to be contacted in such a situation, someone who could for instance give consent for emergency treatment or provide vital information about an individual's medical history. In April 2005, Brotchie launched a campaign to promote the concept of ICE numbers, backed by mobile phone company Vodafone and endorsed by Falklands War veteran Simon Weston. It wasn't until the terrorist attacks in London later that year, however, that the idea of ICE numbers really began to take off, rapidly spreading across to the USA, Australia, and throughout the world. Global exposure of the concept occurred

practically overnight, with international media coverage and a largescale e-mail campaign helping to spread the word. ICE stands for In Case of Emergency. An ICE number is the telephone number of a friend or relative who should be contacted in an emergency situation. The number can be identified in a mobile phone address book by the prefix ICE, as in for example ICE Mum, ICE Chris, etc. If all mobile phone users carried an ICE number, should they be victims of an accident, paramedics and emergency services would have a straightforward way of ascertaining their identity and any vital personal information by talking to a nominated person. Phone users could have more than one ICE number, storing them in priority order as ICE1, ICE2, ICE3, etc. Some of the newer mobile phones have an alternative to the ICE Number built into the phone. Apple, for example, have made it possible to access ‘Emergency’ information even when the phone screen is locked – and there is an option to store emergency contacts, medical history and drug reactions and allergies within this file. Access to this type of information could be the difference between life and death in an emergency situation.

Rabbit Ings Country Park It’s always a bit mind blowing when you happen upon somewhere interesting near to where you’ve grown up, and you had no idea it was there! Rabbit Ings Country Park is such a place, and at a very substantial 76 hectares, and offering beautiful and accessible walks, it’s incredible that not everyone in the neighbouring localities are aware of it. Rabbit Ings Country Park Ranger, Mick Birkinshaw, gave us a tour of the country park, told us a bit of his family history, describing family ties to the place going back to the 1890s, and explained how the country park came into being. Rabbit Ings is a country park located on the former colliery yard and spoil heap of the Monkton Colliery and then the Royston Drift Mine, which closed in 1989. The 76-hectare site officially opened in 2011 and is equivalent to 106 full-size football pitches! The Park is home to a variety of wildlife, including newts, snakes, herons and deer. When it first opened, the park was under the ownership of Wakefield Council, but in 2012, the council transferred the land into the ownership of the Land Trust, who contracted Groundwork Trust to manage the site. The reclamation of the site was supported through the Government’s National Coalfield Programme being implemented by the Homes and Communities Agency in partnership with Wakefield Council and Yorkshire Forward. The site had suffered environmental degradation with large areas of bare shale and the slopes of the 40m high tip were very steep in places and potentially dangerous. Part of the reclamation scheme involved earth moving to lessen the slopes and make it possible for new

vegetation to become established. Over 130,000 tonnes of soil making material have been used on site to create new areas of woodland, heathland and grassland habitats. New soaring footpaths and cycle tracks have been created, offering stunning views and there are areas of extensive tree and shrub planting, as well as sports pitches for use by the community. The extensive path network offers a

variety of walks suitable for differing levels of fitness with benches around the site offering a place to rest and appreciate the great views. The hard surfaced paths are ideal for a family cycle while the hill provides for those looking for more of a challenge! For horse riders, easy access on to the site is available at each entry point as well as a bridleway, and there’s a grass canter track on the North slope.

The park benefits from an event field by the car park and three well maintained football pitches along with two changing rooms and a referees room. Groundwork’s team at Rabbit Ings routinely plan events and activities for the community and focus their time on educating children and young people from local schools. The aim of these school trips is to teach young people about wildlife, green spaces and local history.

Rabbit Ings Country Park before and after the site reclamation

The rabbit A striking image of a rabbit is carved on the hillside which can be seen from miles around. The rabbit, similar to the black rabbit on Watership Down, is a Norse image which ties in with the name of the site – ‘ings’ being a Norse word or description of low lying wetland and of course a rabbit! The rabbit was created with the help of 192 local school children. Spectacular views can be enjoyed from the viewpoint at the top of the hill. Whilst at the foot of the hill woodland and wetland provide a marvellous

1. Starting at Rabbit Ings Country Park car park, exit the car park and turn left along the road under the railway bridge. Beyond Cross Lane, turn left along the Trans Pennine Trail South, following the Barnsley Canal. 2. Turn left along the road, cross over where it narrows and go straight on at the bend along Pools Lane. Continue beyond the playground - through the kissing gate but instead pass through the hedge beside the barrier. Continue over the railway line and turn left along the improved path that curves right through the wooded Pool Ings. Cross an old railway bridge and continue along the track bed past the football pitches into the Country Park.

3. Turn right to follow the perimeter path of the Country Park. This path hugs the base of the hill. Continue past the Land Trust map and start to ascend. Turn left at the junction, pass a wooden seat and climb higher, rising to a metal seat at a junction, and a grand viewpoint. Turn right behind the seat to the next main junction. 4. Double back down to the right and turn left at the junction, back onto the perimeter path with the light blue waymark. At the next red and blue post you can visit the lakeshore and the main route passes a second lake. Bear left on the red route uphill and keep straight on following the little valley on your left past an information panel. Keep right on the red and blue route and turn right at the junction to return to the car park and toilets.

Walking to an international cap Wakefield Walking Football Club recently had an occasion to celebrate when club member David ”Bam” Batholomew was selected for, and indeed, played for England v Ireland in the IWFF Jack Charlton Memorial Walking Football Tournament. Bam, as he is known, said “I didn't know I would get awarded a cap but that was brilliant - I felt really proud and it was really a special moment. The only disappointment is that we were defeated 0-1 when the Irish team scored a late breakaway goal” Bam plays at Wakefield Walking Football Club and was called up to the over 50 England squad after impressing for the team in a number of league fixtures last year. He was selected for some

Rycroft Leisure - Looking forward to welcoming everyone back after lockdown My visit to Rycroft Leisure wasn’t quite the full experience I would have liked as we were in the middle of Lockdown #2, and the centre and facilities were closed to the public. I did however get a great tour of the facilities and flavour of the place, and I had the opportunity to chat to members of staff. I also had the lovely opportunity to sample their delicious cream tea and hot chocolate, which I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. It was a real shame that I wasn’t able to see the centre whilst it was alive with people enjoying the impressive facilities, but the staff did a great job of filling in with vivid descriptions and it was easy to imagine how lively it could get. What a great asset the centre is to the local communities, providing sports facilities, a great bar and lounge, a youth club and a hub for various local groups to meet up. The centre is at the heart of the community and has been heavily involved, with other partners, in the community response during the covid lockdowns, helping vulnerable people to access medical appointments, food and essential supplies. Scott Mincher, Centre Manager, and Sandra Hull, Finance Officer, gave me the grand tour. They are clearly very passionate about the centre and were so welcoming and friendly, their enthusiasm was obvious. The facilities really are excellent, with 6 football pitches and an all weather 3G pitch. It was encouraging to hear that the pitches are well used by the community and also provide a home for Ryhill FC and other football teams. Also outside is a bowling green, and a play area, which has a well equipped section for small children and a more exciting section for older juniors, with, amongst other things a zip wire, buddy swing and climbing frame. There are plans to create a community café and renovate the patio area for visitors to sit outside whilst the children are playing, or having a drink and a bite to eat after enjoying the centre’s facilities – at the moment (or when restrictions are relaxed), visitors are able to take advantage of the seating area with drinks, both hot and cold, from the bar. A lovely bar and lounge area is, I imagine, the hub of the centre when times are more normal. Double doors

can open out into the sports hall next to the bar which gives the option of extra tables and seating, creating a bigger venue for special occasions. The sports hall is usually well used for badminton and different classes, such as Karate sessions, children’s birthday parties, and there are future plans to hold live entertainment and roller-disco sessions, which sounds amazing. A stage and 200 chairs and tables make it an ideal conference or party venue. Eleanor Bradbury, Youth and Community Work Co-ordinator, spoke to me about the Youth Club which has different sessions for 8-19 year olds. Under normal circumstances, summer activities would include trips and special events and plenty for the young people to get involved with. For the more mature users of the centre, a ‘Young at Heart’ club meets regularly (when Covid restrictions aren’t in place) and there are plans to introduce more clubs to the centre to cater for different interests. A fully equipped indoor gym over two rooms, completes the centre’s facilities. The staff were proud to have been involved in the centre’s involvement in the community response during covid lockdowns helping vulnerable local residents, and distributing food parcels to those who needed extra support. The centre is now in the process of organising Christmas food hampers in collaboration with the Learning Centre. Specifically for individuals and families in Ryhill and Havercroft who have encountered loss of income or financial hardship, it’s hoped the food hampers will bring a touch of relief this Christmas. The centre already had in place a

service whereby wholesome meals are cooked at the centre, from fresh ingredients, and delivered out hot to older residents in the nearby localities. The meals, which cost only £3.50 per meal and are available on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, are as close to ‘home cooked’ as one can get, without actually being cooked at home – on the day I visited, the meal was Cottage Pie and if it tasted as delicious as it smelt, the customers were in for a real treat! The centre is able to provide these meals from surplus food donated by local businesses such as the Coop and M&S which are used to cook the meals that are delivered out. Whatever food is left over from the meals is given to the local food bank. If you live within the local areas around Ryhill and Havercroft and would like to receive hot meals, please get in touch with the centre. The meals delivery service was given a boost when support through the Coronavirus Community Support Fund, with money from the Lottery, enabled the centre to buy a much needed van and expand the service to vulnerable people. #CommunitiesCan If anyone would like more information about the centre or the meals delivery service please contact the centre manager, Scott, on 01226 723 659. To register for a Christmas food hamper, please contact Eleanor on 01226 723 659 or email: youth@rycroftleisure.com Keep an eye on the centre’s website and Facebook page to see what’s new and when services and facilities are opening back up.

Christmas time in Castleton

2020 will go down in history as an extraordinary year… for many reasons we are all familiar with. For me, the truly positive thing to come out of lockdown and the tier system has been quality family time, particularly walks. During the summer we enjoyed discovering lanes, fields, paths and woods we had never previously trodden. And now, the autumn walks have been just as enjoyable – having time to enjoy the colours of this season has been good for my spirit. Next, as we enter winter I will look forward to the frosty air and hope that we can spend more time walking locally, but also in our family favourite spots – COVID rules permitting. One such place being Castleton, the honeypot village in the Peak District. Castleton at Christmas time is special. The beautifully lit fir trees line the shop, pubs and cafes through the heart of the village and if you’re wandering about early

evening you might even glimpse Santa on his horse-drawn cart. It’s awe and wonder for the young, but its magic isn’t lost on the older of us either. The children have always loved paddling in the shallow stream that flows through the village (‘Peakshole Water’ named after its source at Peak Cavern) and on a muddy day it serves as a rather lovely boot washer! We always look forward to visiting Peveril Stores, named after the castle that stands above. Homemade pasties, sausage rolls, cakes and slices are a welcome reward for the climb through Cave Dale, beyond through the limestone valley to Mam Tor and back down. The store also sells handmade chocolates and all sorts of delicious treats that make welcome stocking fillers. Aah, Christmas in Castleton is a special thing. Let’s hope we can all visit soon and have some sparkle this winter.

Welcome to the Wakefield Virtual Christmas market! Seeing as we can't get out and about to the usual Christmas markets, a virtual one is the way to go! Just like a normal Christmas market but with a twist - it's all online, ready for all your festive shopping needs. To begin with there will be 100 stalls available (more may be added depending on popularity of the group), with an album and post set up for each stall for convenience. If you would like a stall there will be an optional donation of £5 (minimum the charity can accept) to the wonderful charity My Mum Mary which I have been involved in for the past 5 years. Please invite all your friends and family to support small business owners this Christmas! We started the online Christmas market as a way to promote small and local businesses and individuals. As a small business holder I know the importance of every sale and, especially within the current climate, how important

it is to help out and support those who own small businesses. So we set up the Virtual Christmas Market for Wakefield and Surrounding Areas on Facebook as a way to engage with and bring exposure to those businesses. What you hope to achieve? We hope that this group will encourage people to shop locally this Christmas and help small, local businesses to gain exposure and thrive. We know that a virtual Christmas market is not quite the same as the real thing but we hope we’re also helping to spread a little Christmas cheer, even if it is in an unconventional way. How it’s going? We are fast approaching 50 stalls, of all kinds of budgets and each with different delights on offer, with more being added every day. So far we’ve raised over £200 for the charity and we hope this number will only rise! After Christmas we hope to keep the page running as a general group for small businesses to share their creations all year round!

Wakefield Life - December/January 2020 P11 ADVERTORIAL FEATURE

DIY Wills and What Can Go Wrong With the current national lockdown coming to an end and as we re-enter the three tier system we continue to receive an increased number of enquiries from people who want to make or update their Wills. Unfortunately the lockdown and three tier restrictions may encourage people to take a DIY approach to their Wills in order to reduce their contact with others, but this may have unintended adverse consequences. Figures from the Co-operative Legal Services (CLS) suggest that poorly drafted or ineffective DIY wills are to blame for a prolonged probate ordeal for 38,000 families a year. Most of these problems could have been avoided if legal advice was sought in the first instance.

What can go wrong? The requirements for making a valid Will are strict and as professionals we hear all too often about homemade wills which fail for simple reasons which could have been avoided if legal advice had been taken. Common problems are that the Wills are drafted too narrowly or too broadly, and therefore they do not have the desired effect. Failure to sever the tenancy on any joint property which can result in property passing by survivorship rather than through the deceased’s Will. The Will is witnessed by someone who is legally unable to do so without invalidating part or all of the Will i.e being witnessed by a beneficiary. The Will can be inadvertently drafted in a tax inefficient way, or would have been more suitable if it had incorporated a trust. These are all things that a Solicitor will

consider when advising you on the drafting and execution of your Wills.

Why use a solicitor? Solicitors are regulated by the Law Society and backed by insurance so if there is a problem with your Will the cost of fixing it should not (circumstances depending) fall to your estate to pay. Solicitors can also advise you in relation to estate planning during your lifetime, the effect Inheritance Tax may have on your estate and also consider care home fee planning. Solicitors are trained to look at the broad picture for their clients and will be able to consider other issues which you may not have thought about.

When do I need to get legal advice? You should consider amending or making a Will anytime your circumstances change significantly however, advice should always be sought in the following circumstances: • • • •

If you are co-habiting but are not married; If you are going through a divorce; If you have any business or foreign assets; If you are planning on disinheriting any of your children; • If any of the beneficiaries are vulnerable, for example if they lack capacity to deal with their finances or are minors; • If you are in a second/third/fourth marriage and you wish to protect your assets for your children from a previous marriage; • If you have assets in excess of £500,000 (or £1 million as a couple). This is not an exhaustive list and if you are in any doubt you should obtain legal advice.

DIY Wills are more expensive than you think. Whilst paying a professional to draft your Will might seem expensive, the reality is that a poorly drafted Will means that legal advice will almost certainly be required to deal with your estate when you pass away. The costs to your estate are likely to be around at least double what they would have been if the Will had been drafted in a way which fits your circumstances. Therefore, it is actually more cost effective to pay to have your Will drafted properly in your lifetime rather than leave it to your executors or beneficiaries to deal with the problems once

you have passed away. For example, paying £100 for a DIY Will and £10,000 in probate legal fees adds up to far more than a professionally drafted Will and the average £3000 in probate legal fees. It will also save your family or the people you wish to benefit a considerable amount of worry and anxiety and should make the process of administering your estate a much smoother one.

Police advise on home security

- Securing Doors & Windows and reducing risk of Eurocylinder burglaries Cylinder locks are present on the majority of UPVC doors and we are aware that some offenders have developed a way of overcoming them to then gain access into a home. West Yorkshire Police have led on this issue nationally with colleagues at Secured by Design and industry/trade authorities such as the British Standards Institute, the Door & Hardware Federation and the Master Locksmiths Association. There are now ways that you can reduce the opportunity for a euro-cylinder burglary to take place at your home. Two nationally recognised standards exist for cylinders: • TS 007 (1 star or 3 star) • Sold Secure Diamond Standard for lock cylinders (SS312) Door handles are also tested to TS 007 standards and can achieve a 2 star rating. West Yorkshire Police recommend that a 3 star solution is the minimum to achieve if you are upgrading your cylinders. The fitting of a cylinder achieving a 3 star rating is the preferred option given it provides the maximum level of security for a lock under the TS 007 testing process. However, 3 stars can also be achieved by fitting a 1 star cylinder in combination with a 2 star handle. De-

pending on your budget you could obviously achieve a 5 star solution too by the fitting of a 3 star cylinder in combination with a 2 star handle. The star rating system has been designed to give you options depending on your personal circumstances and existing security. Cylinders achieving the Sold Secure Diamond Standard (SS312) are also tested to the highest standards and this standard is recognised alongside TS 007 at a national level.

This issues WAKEFIELD Life restaurant review is...

No Manches! Have you ever been to a restaurant, cafe or coffee shop that you’ve tried and immediately fell in love with, where everything about it just clicks with you, leaving you feeling like you’ve stumbled onto the equivalent of your food-place soulmate. This the feeling I had the first time I was enticed into No Manches! by my daughter. She had tried it the week before and knew it was the type of place I would just love, and she was spot on. This little gem is nestled on Wood Street in Wakefield city centre and, whilst it’s only small inside, it oozes with personality and quirkiness, which is indeed very different to other cafes and restaurants in Wakefield. Mexican food is my favourite, so I’m a little biased, but the No Manches! menu is different to every other generic Mexican restaurant I’ve been to. Even as a devout meat eater, I can absolutely recommend their Spicy Tofu Burrito, and in fact, I’m not sure I’ll be tempted back to the meat options anytime soon. I haven’t tried their Grilled Mexican Sandwiches or Salad Bowls but I’ve seen them being served and they look delicious. Desserts include Churros with hot Belgian chocolate sauce, caramelised banana with caramel biscoff sauce and vanilla ice cream. After discovering this delightful oasis of delicious food, it became a regular brunch haunt for myself and my daughter. The Chocolate Smoothie Bowl was a definite favourite – served warm, it tasted too decadent and naughty to be as healthy as the ingredients suggested. 10 reasons why seniors need pets COMPANIONSHIP Reduce isolation by keeping an animal companion nearby. Dogs and cats mold their personalities to their keepers and are constant in their presence. Some make great travel mates, too.

HAVING A ROUTINE Tending a pet provides the routine around which daily life can be structured. The responsibilities aren’t taxing – unless you want to sleep in when the cat wants to be fed!

EXERCISE Walking the dog makes exercise a daily event.

STRESS Older people with pets show less stress than older people without pets – perhaps because of the many ways pet responsibilities structure daily life, or perhaps because of the constancy and predictability of the companionship.

GETTING OUT Those with dogs have a built-in reason to go outdoors often.

MAKING FRIENDS While it’s hard to meet new people, dogs make terrific icebreakers.

NEW INTERESTS Dog owners might feel inspired to clean up the neighbourhood park where they walk their canine. Hospitals sometimes seek hospital-friendly pets to visit patients.

PROTECTION Even small dogs can provide security, as thieves usually avoid homes where there’s a barking dog.

TAKING CARE OF SOMETHING It’s deeply satisfying to take care of another living being, and the desire to be useful and of value never relents.

Keeping pets can keep you healthy The physical benefits of pet companionship for older adults include lowering blood pressure, cholesterol and heart rate. Reports also claim that a study found seniors who have pets will frequent the doctor’s office 21% less often, and show decreased signs of depression when aging. The emotional benefits are easy to understand, given surveys that reveal these behaviours of seniors who have a pet companion: • 95% talk to their pet • 82% say their pet helps when they feel sad • 71% claim their pet helps when they physically feel bad • 65% report that touching their pet makes them feel better • 57% admit they confide in their pet

connect with others. Plus, a pet companion becomes a focus of attention when the house is otherwise empty, which reduces the sense of isolation.

Comfort In difficult times, many seniors report that their animal companion was a help in coping with medical treatments and recovery after injury or illness. Both dogs and cats can be keenly sensitive to their human companion’s distress and discomfort, and may snuggle in to be supportive.

Healing Powers Petting a dog “results in reduced levels of the primary stress hormone cortisol.” Overall, human-pet interaction is known to release the “anti-stress, calming hormone oxytocin in animals and humans.”

Dog-Walking

So, should you get a pet?

Recent studies reports that “a group who walked with shelter dogs improved their normal walking speed and distance” … and were “more likely to go for a walk than those who walked with a human companion. In fact, the human companions often discouraged each other from walking.” Moreover, “Dogwalking was associated with lower body mass index, fewer activities of daily living limitations, fewer doctor visits, and more frequent moderate and vigorous exercise.”

The health and wellness benefits of pets for the elderly are numerous, but before you get a new pet, prepare yourself. Are you set in your ways? Bringing a pet into the house will require you

to adapt. Have you had a pet before? If so, your chances of a good pet companionship experience improve. Do you have disabilities? Cats or birds may be a better choice for those with physical challenges. Do you need a therapy pet? Consider an assistance- or therapy-dog. Is the pet the right age? Kittens and puppies require extra attention, but a pet who’s aging into the later stages of its life may soon develop health conditions too. Does the pet have a good temperament? The breed of the dog or cat can tell you something about its expected behaviour, but getting to know the particular animal is the best way to know how you’ll get along. Is the pet healthy? Insist on a careful and thorough veterinarian checkup. One pet or two? A pair of dogs or cats may keep each other company, but it’s important each bonds with the human first. Are finances an issue? From vet bills to sacks and cans of pet food, pets cost money.

Heart Benefits Those with dogs and cats reduce their risk of coronary heart disease. According to studies, pet adopters often have higher heart attack survival rates, lower resting heart rates and blood pressure, smaller increases in heart rate and blood pressure in response to stress, and quicker stress recovery.

INVESTING IN LIFE Having a pet means making a promise to be involved in the pet’s life. It’s a lifeaffirming decision that requires commitment and dedication.

Mental Health Benefits Many older adults find themselves alone, and group dog walks help them
