Inside Have you seen the colourful wooden crates that have appeared on the corner of Eldon Street and Market Hill, in the town centre? The Crate It artwork reflects some of the fascinating history of Eldon Street when it was once the cultural hub of the town centre and features the amazing characters who performed there in the past. In the 1800s, entertainers came from across the world to perform in the theatres on Eldon Street, including the Public Hall, now The Civic, Barnsley and the Empire Theatre of Varieties which is now the Parkway Cinema. The grand circus made of wood and led by famous circus master Charles Adams stood on Eldon Street in the 1870s. Many of the circus acts performed on horseback, and local people would visit the circus stables during the day to view the horses. There are many fascinating stories about the wonderful history of Eldon Street, including the Italian painter Tommaso Juglaris who won a design competition to paint the stage at the new Public Hall before it opened in 1878, and George Dinnie, the World’s Strongest Man, who came to the Public Hall in the early 1900s. Local people could challenge him to three rounds on stage for the chance to win the equivalent of a year’s wages! Local artists Lenny and Whale created this bright and cheerful temporary artwork, which is part of

and funded by the new Eldon Street High Street Heritage Action Zone. Lenny and Whale said: “We hope our temporary crates installation will spark interest and intrigue in to Eldon Street's history, as well as create an alternative colourful seating area,

whilst the town centre regeneration continues. “On the day we were installing the artwork we had a great response from passers-by who liked the way the bold coloured crates brightened the area up and were intrigued to hear about the performers of times gone by.”

Many of these stories will be explored in a new digital exhibition about the early years of the Public Hall (now The Civic, Barnsley) that will be launched later in the year. For more information please visit www.barnsley.gov.uk/haz or follow @EldonHAZ on Twitter.

A day in The Dales

Isn’t it amazing how a good day out can completely lift your spirits! I’ve been going to Burnsall in The Yorkshire Dales (10 minutes drive past Bolton Abbey) since I was a little girl and it still holds all the charm and beauty for me now. It’s a shorter ride than to the coast – usually takes us about an hour and a half, give or take and once you’re there you feel like you’ve entered a completely different world. A world of aged, dry stone walls, green valleys and hills, scattered farmsteads and gentle snaking rivers. It’s a place to feel at peace, and I’m sure many of us need that at the moment. Burnsall is a beautiful Wharfedale village that lies on the bend of the River Wharfe. There are a couple of small cafes, public toilets and carpark and The Red Lion pub that sits in the heart of it, right next to the large five arched bridge. However, when we visit we park in a well-kept field (£8 for the day) and park right up to the edge of The Wharfe that wraps around the field. We unload our loungers and chairs, towels and blankets, sandwiches and drinks and settle down for the day -

able to watch the kids playing on the wide pebbled banks and in the shallow flowing water. The views of the fells and fields are truly breath-taking but if you fancy being a little more energetic there’s plenty of neatly trimmed field to set up a game of cricket or kick a ball. There are also gentle walks all along the river side. Whatever you feel like… The field has some clean, well-kept toilet too and there’s a Yorkshire Dales ice-cream van, as well as selling the obvious, also fishing nets, dinghies, buckets and spades and rubber rings. Children, adults and dogs safely paddle, swim, fish and bob along the river, round all its bends and shallows. It’s idyllic. A lovely day. But there’s more… A twenty minute drive at teatime and you enter a different world. This time a world of jaw dropping burgers, thick shakes, crispy chicken, syrupy waffles, homemade icecreams, fluffy pancakes and fizzy sodas – all served up from a 50’s style wooden clad American diner ‘Billy Bobs’. This was our first visit with Molly, our cockerpoo so we sat on one of the many outdoor

picnic tables. The food is always delicious but there’s just one dilemma… savoury or sweet??? Both are amazing but disappointingly too big to indulge in both! Previously, I’ve devoured their pancake stacks and sweet waffles served with marshmallows, honeycomb chunks, mini do-nuts, toffee pieces, fudgy sauce and domes of yummy ice-cream but on this visit I fancied savoury and I am so glad I did! I has Louisiana Balls – pulled pork and sticky rice rolled into breadcrumb coated balls and fried, served with salad and chipotle mayo. My daughter had a hotdog with sausage as good as the butchers and the boys had heaped burgers with melted cheese, pulled pork and warm bbq sauce. It’s really lovely, well-priced food but if you just want to call in for one of their many homemade ice-creams and a play on the wooden trucks and trains you can do that too! It’s a truly delicious end to a wonderful day. So The Dales is good for body, mind and soul and I always feel lucky that we live close enough to enjoy some of its splendour all in one day!

BARNSLEY Life BBQ FEATURE...

Top Tips for a Great Barbeque parsley, and attaching them to the Summer is finally here and it’s end of a wooden spoon with some time to dust down the barbecue in twine. Simply dip the herbs in some anticipation of some long-awaited olive oil and brush over your meats days relaxing with friends, family, before grilling. beers and delicious food. Here are • A grilling basket is useful if you our tips to make sure your regularly barbecue flat fish such as barbecue goes off without a hitch. plaice or small fish like sardines, as it 1. Get the right equipment If you want to get serious about your barbeque technique, you’ll need the right tools and equipment. Make sure your barbeque is up to the task and is clean, prepped and ready to roll. If you’re using a gas barbeque, make sure you have enough gas to see out the day and if you prefer charcoal, stock up in advance and give yourself time to get the coals to the optimum temperature before cooking. Having barbeque specific tools makes barbequing a lot easier. • A long handled pair of tongs make moving heavier cuts easy and safe. The extra length of the tongs keep your arms further away from the grill, reducing the chance of any nasty burns. • A temperature probe is a great investment as it can be harder to tell if meat is cooked through. • Make your own herb brush to add extra flavour by gathering your chosen herbs, such as rosemary, thyme and

makes it easier to turn the fish without it breaking up. • And don’t forget long armed barbecue gloves to protect your arms from the heat of the barbeque – singed arm hairs and burns isn’t a great look. 2. Preparation is key Work out how much food you will need per person and which foods will need preparation beforehand, such as marinating, pre-cooking or chilling. Sides and condiments are an important part of a barbeque and cold meats, salads, coleslaws, pies and cheeses are guaranteed crowd pleasers, as are sumptuous desserts which can be prepared ahead. Ensure there are plenty of bread rolls to make burgers and hot dogs, especially if children are there. If you are planning to make kebabs on skewers, don’t forget to pre-soak the wooden skewers in water to prevent them burning and flaming up whilst the kebabs are on the barbeque!

3. Marinate that meat Inject some instant flavour into your cuts by marinating them. Marinating overnight is the best way to ensure the flavours permeate the meat. Or keep things super simple and add some ready marinated selections of meats which are available from most butchers and supermarkets. Don’t forget to shake off any excess marinade before the meat hits the grill, especially if it contains oil. If it’s too saucy the meat is more likely to burn or flare causing that bitter smoky flavour. 4. Avoid fridge chill Taking the raw meat or fish out of the fridge at least 20 minutes before barbecuing gives it long enough to lose its chill and get down to room temperature. If the meat is too cold when it hits the grill there’s a danger it could burn on the outside before it’s cooked through to the middle. This is especially important with chicken, sausages and any other pork. It’s still important to do this with beef burgers and steaks to ensure your meat is as rare or well done as you like it. When meat is removed from the fridge, keep the time to a minimum to prevent it spoiling and always keep it covered.

5. Cooking – direct or indirect Direct cooking is the most common method on the barbecue. It’s great for thin cuts like steaks, burgers, fish and sausages as they’re placed directly over the heat. One of the main advantages of direct cooking is the high temperatures within the barbecue create the perfect conditions for searing, resulting in great flavour and texture to the meat. Indirect cooking methods are a little more advanced than direct cooking. Place the meat next to, not directly over, the heat source. Once they’re warm separate your coals into two piles at opposite ends of the grill. Place a drip tray underneath the grill, between the coals. Your meat goes on the grill in the space over the drip tray. With this method the barbecue acts like an oven so is ideal for cuts like roasting joints that require slow cooking on a lower heat. Always ensure meats cooked on the barbeque are cooked through and eaten straight away, especially chicken and pork products. Some people prefer to pre-cook chicken pieces in the kitchen oven to ensure the meat is cooked through before transferring it to the barbeque to ‘finish off’ and add the smokey barbeque flavour.

6. Test the meat An obvious one but so important, especially if you’re cooking for a lot of people. It can be hard to tell how welldone meat is on the barbecue by sight alone. Be sure to cut into chicken and pork and check whether the juices run clear, or invest in a temperature probe. 7. Have your kitchen pans prepared as back-up Be prepared for the weather to turn. With British weather being unpredictable, have your griddle pans and oven prepped to finish off any items that get caught in a sudden downpou8r. 8. Think veggie And finally, give some thought to friends and family who may be vegetarian or vegan. If you have any veggie guests, consider vegetable kebabs, marinated tofu and haloumi cheese, all of which maintain their shape and texture on the grill and absorb flavours from marinades well. Pineapple wedges or slices are delicious grilled on a barbeque, as are whole bananas cooked in their skins until blackened, or with the skin slit down the top and pieces of chocolate pushed into the banana.

Delicious Homemade Coleslaw • 1 small cabbage or half large cabbage – white, red or green, or a mixture • 4 large carrots • 1 large red onion • Approx 3 large spoons of mayonnaise • 1 tblsp of vinegar – white wine, malt or lemon juice • 1 tblsp of sugar – white, soft brown or demerara • Celery salt Remove any dense core from the cabbage and shred thinly. Coarsely grate the carrots or cut into thin strips and thinly slice the onion. Put cabbage, carrot and onion into a large bowl. Into another bowl whisk together three large spoons of mayonnaise, a tablespoon of white wine vinegar (malt vinegar or lemon juice can also be used), a spoon of sugar (either white, soft brown or demerara), a shake of celery salt. You can also add to the mix any favourite chopped herbs, paprika, a dash of mustard or

even a dash or Hendersons relish. Sour cream or yoghurt is also nice added to the mayonnaise to give a more tart flavour. Playing around with the flavours is part of the fun. Pour the mayo mixture over the dry ingredients and toss together to coat evenly. All quantities are rough and can be tweaked to suit your own taste. Taste the end result before mixing with dry ingredients and ensure you have enough quantity to coat the cabbage/carrot/onion mix as thickly or thinly as you prefer.

Kingston Jewellers Celebrating 40th Anniversary Kingston Jewellers are celebrating 40 years as Barnsley’s family jewellers in the Victorian Arcade, would like to thank their customers, old and new, for supporting them during the years. Our story of Kingston Jewellers began in 1981 when the founder Peter Kingston retired after 30 years in the Parachute Regiment. The family had travelled with him on many interesting postings around the world but as Mr Kingston had been involved in some major conflicts he decided on a quieter second career! So, Mr and Mrs Kingston and their two daughters, Sara and Sally, trained as jewellers and the first shop was opened in July 1981 in the Victorian Arcade, Barnsley. As a family, we have always strived to provide beautiful jewellery at reasonable prices along with a top-class service. The 80’s and 90’s jewellery fashion was for gold chains, bracelets and earrings, and then came the bead sensation in the 90’s and 2000’s, with the Chamilia/Pandora/Lovelinks jewellery along with other branded fashion jewellery.

This was a very busy period for us and as a (excluding sale items) jewellers we loved the changing styles, constantly seeking to keep up with trends in order to provide our customers with the latest fashion. In 2011, after 30 years in the business Mr and Mrs Kingston retired, Sally moved to live in Spain and daughter Sara took over the reins at Kingston Jewellers. Sarah is now supported by Debbie, who has been with the shop for over 26 years and is now the much respected and invaluable manageress of the Victorian Arcade shop. As the business became busier, Sara decided to expand by opening a second shop, Kingston II, opposite the original premises. The new shop purely stocked jewellery and gifts, gents and children’s fashion jewellery and watches. jewellery and watches. Curried Chicken Gratin This has been a family favourite for years. If you keep breadcrumbs in the freezer, its quick and easy to prepare, and using different bread, such as herby bread, gives a slightly tastier flavour. We sometimes use individual gratin or pie dishes rather than one larger dish, and chop the chicken into large chunks. METHOD 1. Cook frozen broccoli for 5 mins, drain and place in a buttered dish. 2. Simmer chicken in stock until tender. 3. Drain, reserving stock, and place chicken on top of broccoli. 4. Mix in a pan, condensed soup, cheese, curry powder, evaporated milk, mayonnaise and lemon juice. 5. Warm through until well mixed, diluting with some of the reserved stock if necessary to get a consistency or double cream..

Recipe Page Ingredients:

500g (20oz) packet frozen broccoli spears 4 chicken breasts 280ml (½ pint) chicken stock 284g (10oz) can undiluted condensed chicken soup ½ cup grated cheddar cheese 1 heaped teaspoon curry powder ½ cup evaporated milk ¾ cup mayonnaise 2 teaspoons lemon juice ½ cup breadcrumbs

6. Pour sauce over chicken and sprinkle with breadcrumbs. 7. Bake at 350˚C / 180˚F / Gas Mark 4 for 30 mins or until thoroughly warmed through Serve with new potatoes and seasonal vegetables, or pasta, rice or garlic bread.

Chocolate Roulade A delicious dessert anytime, but especially lovely as a centrepiece for a summer garden party or family meal, with raspberries or strawberries. Also lovely with extra fruit chopped and mixed into the cream filling the roulade, with whole pieces of the fruit reserved for the topping. METHOD 1. Melt the chocolate gently. 2. Whisk the egg yolks with the sugar until thick and creamy and gradually whisk in the melted chocolate. 3. Whisk the egg whites until stiff and gently fold into chocolate mixture. 4. Turn into a lined and greased large roasting tin. 5. Bake in a preheated oven, 180˚C / 375˚F / Gas Mark 4 for 25-30 mins until firm. 6. Leave to cool for 5 mins, then cover with a clean damp tea towel and leave overnight. 7. Carefully remove the cloth and turn the roulade onto a sheet of greaseproof paper sprinkled thickly with icing sugar. Peel off the lining paper. 8. Whip the cream and spread three quarters over the roulade. Roll up the roulade like a swiss roll, using the greaseproof paper to help. (The roulade WILL crack). Decorate with cream, fruit and chocolate.

Stories of Slazenger Experience Barnsley Museum is searching for stories about Slazenger for a future exhibition on how the sporting giant impacted on the town. In 2022, the award-winning museum will open a new exhibition based on the social history of the now closed Slazenger’s factory, which was once a major employer for the area. The busy factory was full of camaraderie, always bustling and was unique in the fact that made all the balls for the Wimbledon tournament.

The exhibition will feature a new documentary style film based on life at the factory and have lots of fun activities that people of all ages can take part in. The museum team are looking for any stories or memories relating to the factory and would love to speak to anyone who worked there so this important part of the boroughs industrial heritage can be recorded for the future. Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place

(Regeneration and Culture) said: “Experience Barnsley has undergone some exciting changes over recent months with a whole host of new objects relating to the towns fascinating past to discover. As well as the permanent displays there is a brilliant programme of exhibitions planned including the one based around the Slazenger factory. Another amazing example of Barnsley, its people, industries and ambition having a huge impact around the globe.”

Carbon Emissions from Streelighting across Barnsley down 80 per cent Barnsley Council have announced they have reduced carbon emissions from streetlighting in Barnsley by an estimated 80 per cent over the last seven years. This latest analysis of energy use shows that in 2020 our street lighting used 8.8 million kwh less electricity than it did in

2014. That’s enough to power 2,362 homes based on the UK average consumption of 3,731 kwh per year. Barnsley Council said, “It’s thanks to the work to upgrade lights across the borough to ultra-efficient LED lights and amounts to a 58 per cent reduction in electricity usage

THURSDAY 5PM - 9PM FRIDAY 5PM - 9.30PM SATURDAY 4PM - 9.30PM SUNDAY 5PM - 8.30PM

from street lights. The reduction in carbon emissions is even greater still at an estimated 80 per cent. This is because of the growing use of renewable energy over the same period. On top of this, we’ve also this year signed up to a renewable energy tariff so all the electricity we now pay for is from renewable sources.”

To share memories people can contact Steven Skelley, Community Heritage Curator at stevenskelley@barnsley.gov.uk

When the exhibition opens the museum will throw a big party in celebration of Barnsley’s brilliant balls!

Craft Beer: It’s Both Style AND Substance Do you know your DIPAs from your NEIPAs, a TFG from a DDH? If you don’t, there’s a whole world ready for you to discover! It wasn’t too long ago that if you headed out to a bar or off licence, you just had a choice of traditional bitters, maybe a blonde ale, stouts and various lagers. There are actually hundreds of styles and with a craft beer market increase over recent years, there has been a growth in smaller breweries, tap rooms, bottle shops and pubs developing their dispense range. Hops and malts are just two main ingredients when making beer of which there are many varieties and combinations. Brewers use these ingredients as chefs use herbs, spices and seasoning in the kitchen. It’s where art and alchemy blend. It’s no longer unusual to see an IPA on draught but what is it? Let’s take an overview tour of the most commonly found styles that you are likely to encounter down your local Bottle Shop or tap room which you may not be familiar with…

The India Pale Ale (IPA) Characterised by their hoppy nature and increased alcohol content (ABV) verses a Pale Ale,

expect floral, fruity, citrus and pine notes from an Indian Pale Ale which itself takes many forms. British IPAs British hops lend an earthy, spicy character to the beer and are usually quite light with a dry finish. American West Coast IPAs are synonymous with resinous, pine and bitter flavours pouring a clear appearance and very crisp and refreshing without being too dry. American East Coast style IPAs or New England IPAs (NEIPA) tend to focus on hop aromas and flavours. Expect stone fruits, softness and juiciness with a light bitterness that pours hazy, leaving a cloudy look and pillow-like texture. Double IPAs are a scaled-up version of an American IPA which often see its ABV reach 7 to 9%. More malt, super hoppy, these ‘juicebombs’ have a rather ‘soupy’ appearance and mouthfeel. As drinkers got used to the huge aroma and dryness of the DIPA, last year there was an increase in popularity of the TIPA - Triple IPA typically coming in at 9-11% ABV and even hoppier! Some breweries haven’t stopped there either, by releasing a QIPA - Quadruple IPA that has seen ABV levels reach 14% and definitely not for the feint hearted!

American Pale Ale

Lager

Typically characterised by floral, citrus and pine notes, APAs tend to be sub-6% in ABV and more ‘sessionable’. Great for a few pints at a time at a barbecue . They have a good balance of malt and hops, medium bitterness and not too thick on pour. If you come across a DDH Pale Ale, this is a recipe that’s had Double Dry Hopping which gives an element of the enhanced taste and thickness of an IPA at a more modest ABV level.

Ok, you’ve probably heard of Lager. But did you know of the multitude of sub-forms? Most hail from abroad but more UK breweries are releasing delicious, clean, crisp lager styles inspired by the famous German Helles and Bock beers, rich Kellerbiers, Vienna Lager and Pilsners. Brewing a lager typically takes weeks at colder temperatures such as Squawk’s Peng. Brewed in Manchester, it’s made with all German ingredients and lagered for ten weeks!

Sours A style that has mostly been brewed on the continent for centuries, Lambics and Goses (with added sea salt) are just two. Wild yeast and ‘good’ bacteria sour the beer and give a ‘funky’ flavour profile that serve as good palate cleansers especially in between a couple of juicy, hoppy IPAs. There’s often added fruit to complement the sourness such as in North Brewing Co’s Triple Fruited Gose series that sees big doses of oats, salt and fruit purees (Blueberry and Apricot being one example). Or Brew York’s Rhubarbara Streisand rammed with rhubarb and a smidge of fiery ginger.

Stouts and porters are a familiar style too but the Craft scene is where the experiments lead us to big Imperial products from 6 to 14% ABV and ageing the beer in bourbon and whisky casks producing complex smoky, oaky flavours. Roasted coffee or dark chocolate beers are now accompanied by sweet chocolatey and milk stouts that can be like desserts in a glass. You’ll find additions like treacle, maple syrup, marshmallow and peanut butter paving the way for beers such as Beer Ink’s Starbeer - an 8.5% interpretation of a popular closely-

Leeds’ Northern Monk are famous for experimenting with beer styles and adding their own twist! named chocolate bar! If you thought beer wasn’t for you, then perhaps you haven’t found the right ‘one’? In heading down to your local Bottle Shop or by visiting a tap room, trying different beers is part of the experience. Or how about organising a ‘Bottle Share’? Gather your friends and family, a selection of beers,

take a glass and pour a taste of each beer. Welcome to your new beer journey!

Please drink responsibly. www.drinkaware.co.uk

BETTER TOGETHER! At Age UK Barnsley, we’re happy to be able to say that we are part of the Barnsley Third Sector Dementia Alliance. It’s just one of the many great examples of partnership

working supported by Barnsley Council and operating across the whole of the borough. So what is it? It’s a group of six locally based charities working

together to serve the people of Barnsley. They support people living with Dementia, and their carers. The charities have different areas of expertise, some of the charities are dementia specific and others are dementia friendly offering services to people living with dementia within their general services. Across the alliance they can provide the following services: • Information and advice • One to one emotional and practical support • Peer support groups • Day centre opportunities • Respite support • Home care support • Social groups/tea dances • Day trips and holidays If you want to get further details about any of the services, please contact any of the charities involved: • The Alzheimer’s Society 01226 296301 • Age UK Barnsley 01226 776820

• Barnsley Independent Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support (BIADS) 01226 280057 • Butterflies Dementia Support and Activities Group 07545 815513 • Crossroads Barnsley Ltd 01226 731094 • Making Space (Barnsley Carers Service) 01226 288772 If you are unsure as to which organisation to approach, please get in touch with Age UK Barnsley on 01226 776820 and they will point you in the right direction. The group is not just about making people aware of what’s available. They are actively seeking to make improvements to the services available and make access to information and services easier for people, so that what can already be a stressful situation can be made less so.

Moving forward, the Dementia Friendly Barnsley website: http://www.dementia-barnsley.info/ is soon to be getting an update, so watch this space! A person involved in another aspect of work around Dementia in Barnsley is Christine Key who has recently been recognised with an Age Friendly Barnsley award for her work. She has led the Barnsley Dementia Action Alliance for several years, given up many hours of her own time to work with a wide range of customer facing businesses and services, to help them become Dementia Friendly, tackle stigma and to raise awareness about dementia. Here she is seen receiving her award from Wendy Lowder, Executive Director, Adults and Communities at Barnsley MBC.

Degenerative disc disease (ddd) JUST ABOUT every single one of us will experience some type of back pain in our lifetime with pain levels going from mild to severe. Dependant on our own body’s condition, our wellbeing at the time and how we damage our back, the period of pain can be short-lived or last for a long time. No matter how strong we are or how we caused the injury, pain in our back will make our normal everyday activities more difficult to perform. WHAT IS DDD? Firstly, it’s worth pointing out that this is not actually a disease but a condition and suffering from DDD is very normal. As we age, our discs start to naturally degenerate; the average age for this to start happening is around 25 years onwards and by the time we hit 40 years old there’s a very good chance that we may have a mild form already but may not show any symptoms. Approximately 80% of our discs are made from water which is surrounded by the Annulus which is a tough fibrocartilage. When we put stress and strain on our discs the water will gradually start to dry out. Dehydration of a disc is the first sign of degeneration and when more than

one disc is affected in this way, this will be classed a DDD. Continuing the stress and strains on our discs usually causes further degeneration and we stand a good chance of placing too much downward pressure on the disc(s) which will cause it to bulge – continuing the strain over another period of time will see the heightened risk of prolapsing (slipping) one or more discs. Unlike the other tissues in our body, there is very little blood supply to our discs so once we sustain an injury the body cannot repair it and it will start to deteriorate. WHAT ARE THE CAUSES? As you would expect, there are many causes of DDD, but below are the most common: • Genetic or Hereditary – a weakness in your Annulus can run in families or you can be born with a weakness in one or more discs • Wear and Tear – degeneration will be caused by the stress we place on our own backs over the years • Poor Nutrition and Dehydration – sustaining a poor diet will dramatically reduce the strength of our ligaments and fibres in and around our discs

• Sport – usually caused by tearing the outer portion of the disc • Age – as I explained earlier, our discs will naturally deteriorate • Poor Posture – understandably constant forward bending forward or putting our backs in a compromised position will increase the amount of pressure on the discs and speed up the degenerating process • Injury – any other trauma that causes damage to our discs WHAT TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE? • Heat – this will afford the area comfort and help to ease and sooth the pain. Heat therapy can also assist with our mobility • Medication - pain-killers and antiinflammatories usually do exactly what they are designed to do but advice from your GP or pharmacist is advised prior to starting any medication • Manual Therapy – modalities such as massage, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, medical acupuncture and heat therapy will all help after an initial diagnosis to identify the problem. This clinic will also design a bespoke rehabilitation programme with constant updates containing

both stretching and strengthening exercises enabling you regain your mobility • Braces – it may be necessary to use a brace for short period of time. The most common look like a corset and wrap around your stomach and back to give support. It is strongly recommended that these types of braces are not used for extended periods as your body will become reliant and the original problem/injury may not have been dealt with properly • Traction – there is evidence supporting the effective use of traction and inversion tables in combatting back problems. Traction through manual manipulation is also available at my clinic TIPS FOR LOOKING AFTER YOUR DISCS • Keep your back muscles and core flexible and strong – think about aerobic exercise, pilates, yoga etc • Always engage the mind on the task when you are about to bend over or lift something, even if it isn’t heavy. If you are going to lift something, make sure you use the power of your legs and glutes, not you back

From improving your indoor air quality to soothing your dry and irritated skin, you simply can’t go without some of these greenery items in your bedroom. Here are 7 bedroom plants that will do wonders for your health and wellness!

1. SPIDER PLANT: REMOVING AIRBORNE TOXINS.

2. LAVENDER PLANT: DEEPER SLEEP & AIR PURIFICATION.

A very popular flower for its beautiful look as well as its functional use as an essential oil, lavender is a must-have for your bedroom. Lavender gives off a nice aroma that you simply can’t get anywhere else. Lavender is a very distinctivelooking plant with tiny purple flowers that grow in a whirling pattern. Its foliage is a greengray color. Lavender plants will typically grow as tall as two to three feet if they have the proper space to do so. While purple is the most popular color for this plant, the Mediterranean plant does come in light pink with white flowers. Benefits: There’s no better place to grow this plant than in your bedroom because of its calming effects on the body. All it takes is a nice big whiff of lavender to help soothe your nervousness, depression, insomnia, or anxiety. It’s naturally shown to reduce stress and help you breathe easily and have a better sleep. A study by the Miami Miller School of Medicine even showed that the scent of lavender in bath oil calmed babies and sent them off into a deeper sleep. This is exactly why you’ll find it for sale in many spa-like products including soaps, skin care creams, candles, and bath salts.

The spider plant is recognised as one of the most common healthy indoor plants available on the market today. Spider plants are easy to identify with their long slender leaves that come from the central crown. Their leaves are mostly solid green with white outlines. If you’ve noticed that your home doesn’t have great indoor air quality, then you may want to consider planting some spider Care: Unlike the spider plant, lavender plants to help improve it. This is by far one does need to be put in an area that of the easiest plants to grow and manage! receives direct sunlight throughout the day. However, you will need to water it Benefits: Spider plants are an air-purifying often. The biggest fallback of growing plant that has been proven to remove indoors is the lack of light. Formaldehyde is a toxic gas that can cause irritation of your throat, nose, 3. ALOE VERA: and eyes. This colorless gas can be found in a number of household products IMPROVING AIR QUALITY. including fabrics, paper products, and particleboard. Care: Spider Plants don’t appreciate too much excess water and direct sunlight. Try not to leave them directly exposed to the light, because the leaves can burn and die off. It’s a very easy-going plant that happily grows anywhere under low or high light conditions. This means that you can easily grow this plant in less sunny places in your bedroom. It also doesn’t require any special type of soil and you can get away with just occasional watering it if you happen to be forgetful.

This succulent plant is very unique looking with stemless, fleshy leaves. These leaves are green with white speckles throughout. Along the edge of each leaf, you’ll see white spikes that help to make aloe vera very identifiable alongside other household plants. Most people think of aloe vera as a clear gel-like substance. They forget all about the plant and that the gel comes from the aloe vera plants’ innermost part of the leaf. This is a perfect type of house plant to get if you like to cure skin problems naturally. You can apply it directly to your skin to remedy a number of issues. Some of the most common are sunburn, frostbite, burns, cold sores, and psoriasis.

Care: Unlike other plants that need direct sunlight, English Ivy thrives more under artificial light so try to avoid direct sunlight in summer. Water frequently.

5. SNAKE PLANT: AIR PURIFICATION.

Benefits: This type of fern works great for removing toxins in the air including xylene and formaldehyde. Since it’s a natural humidifier, it works great to help alleviate dry skin. This is great for those who are running air-conditioning around the clock. By having a couple of these ferns hanging around, you can ensure the room stays moisturized alongside your skin.

Benefits: It produces extra oxygen at night, so like the other plants listed, it will purify the air in your bedroom while you sleep. Care: Your aloe will need to be deeply watered so that the water penetrates the roots. Also, natural light but not too much is what this plant likes best. Maintaining an aloe vera plant can take some effort to grow correctly. You’ll want to avoid keeping your aloe vera plant in direct sunlight as it can cause the leaves to start browning.

4. ENGLISH IVY PLANT: FOR YOUR RESPIRATORY SYSTEM.

The last of the healthy indoor plants that we’re going to talk about is the Boston Fern. These are very commonly grown in homes as they’re very simple to take care of. It’s known to be a natural humidifier and air purifier for the home. Boston ferns are described as having a cluster of long green leaves that are fernlike in nature. You’ll see a thin stem run through each leaf with tons of tiny leaves running horizontally along the stem. This type of fern will continue to spread to two or three feet in length at its prime

If improving indoor air quality is your aim, then a snake plant can be the perfect solution. You may also hear this type of plant referred to as mother-in-law’s tongue. Whatever name you refer to it as one thing is for sure, it helps to convert that used up carbon dioxide back into oxygen as you sleep at night. Snake plants are easily identifiable by their thick, leathery leaves. Since these plants grow two to four feet tall, you’ll be able to pick them out at the gardening center with ease. These leaves are comprised of a dark green tone that can have either a light green outside or simply light green waves running horizontally through each inch of the leaves.

Care: Boston ferns thrive in cool environments and their soil must be kept very moist. You can grow these ferns in indirect sunlight as well.

7. RUBBER PLANT: IMPROVING AIR QUALITY

Benefits: Apart from removing carbon dioxide, this plant also removes harmful toxins including toluene, xylene, benzene, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde. The snake plant truly is the best plant for air purification to help you breathe better indoors. This evergreen perennial has been idolized since the times of the ancient Romans and Greeks for many reasons. English Ivy is best described as having thick, glossy leaves. You’ll find them in dark to medium green tones with white or yellow veins running through them. The leaves on adult English Ivy plants will be oval in shape. These are very easy to identify alongside other ivies as the leaves have a large number of bold veins running through them. Benefits: The most popular thing about this plant is that it helps people with breathing conditions such as asthma, COPD, and bronchitis. It naturally relaxes the airways and reduces the amount of coughing a person experiences. This makes it perfect to put in your bedroom to help you sleep at night. Another great benefit of having an English ivy plant in your bedroom is that it dilutes 94 percent of airborne mold particles. This means that you’ll not only reduce the possibility of mold growing in your home but you’ll greatly reduce the allergens that can be wreaking havoc on your respiratory system.

Care: Snake plants are typically about waist-high when fully grown. They’re one of the easiest house plants to grow. They don’t have to be placed in direct sunlight and you don’t have to water them very often. In fact, snake plants tend to grow better when you let the soil dry out a bit before watering.

6. BOSTON FERN: RESTORING MOISTURE.

While rubber plants (Ficus robusta) are grown as easy-care houseplants, they also improve indoor air quality, according to studies conducted by NASA. Benefits: Their large leaves can absorb airborne chemicals and break them down, rendering them harmless. They absorb exhaled carbon dioxide and convert it to breathable oxygen. Rubber plants also eliminate bacteria and mold spores in the air. Care: Rubber plants are tolerant of neglect and so can be grown easily by those with little experience with plants. They should be allowed to dry out between watering. Rubber plants handle underwatering better than over-watering. They can thrive in dim light, so they do well in a variety of indoor conditions.

Dearne Valley Wetlands designated Site of Special Scientific Interest A cluster of land along the River Dearne and its tributary the River Dove, near Barnsley, has been officially recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest by Natural England. Natural England officially notified on 13th May that the Dearne Valley Wetlands is a SSSI for its nationally important bird species, including the willow tit, as well as wetland birds such as bittern, garganey, lapwing, redshank and avocet. The SSSI links different pockets of valuable habitat in the Dearne Valley area between Pool Ings near Royston in the north, a large area between Worsbrough in the west, and Adwick Washland in the east. Natural England worked with a number of organisations on the SSSI proposal, including the RSPB, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, Garganey Trust, Environment Agency, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster councils, together known as the Dearne Valley Green Heart Partnership. Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture at Barnsley Council, said: "The fantastic news that the Dearne Valley Wetlands is being designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest is testament to the incredible work of a huge number of people and organisations over many years. "Two of the borough’s many renowned visitor attractions, Barnsley Council’s Worsbrough Mill and Country Park and RSPB Old Moor, are among a total of 15 sub-sites recognised here for their staggering conservation success seen in recent years. "This designation demonstrates that through much hard work and commitment, it’s possible to see tremendous recovery of habitats and animals in areas where more than a century of industry has weighed heavily on the landscape. "We are now able to look forward to further recovery of our natural environment alongside further growth of our economy, through sustainable development and enhancement of this SSSI going hand-inhand." Paul Duncan, Natural England Area Manager, said: "Much of the land within the Site of Special Scientific Interest was formerly used for coal mining. The brownfield land of disused railway lines and spoil heaps has developed important scrub habitats while other land has been used to create new wet grasslands, wetlands and open water sites. "Many areas of the Dearne Valley Wetlands have public access including the RSPB reserve at Old Moor, so it not only protects valuable habitat but it also gives opportunities for local people and visitors to experience and connect with the rich wildlife of the valley, as well as provide economic benefit to the area. "The designation as a SSSI ensures the national importance of this place for nature and people can be fully taken into account

in future decisions regarding its use and management." A key factor in achieving the SSSI status was the stronghold of willow tits, a nationally important bird species, which has declined by 94% since the 1970s and is now this country’s most threatened resident bird species. One of the catalysts for the regeneration was the establishment of Old Moor nature reserve by Barnsley Council in 1998, before management was taken over by the RSPB in 2003. RSPB Yorkshire and Humber Area Manager Richard Barnard said: "The restoration and improvement of the Dearne Valley into the nationally important home for wildlife that it is today is one of the great success stories in UK nature conservation. "The history of the Dearne shows how investing in nature is vital for addressing the nature and climate emergency and can help bring wildlife back to the naturedepleted environments from which it has been lost. "In the Dearne Valley, investment in sites like RSPB Old Moor has led to wetlands that help protect homes and businesses from flooding, provide jobs for local people, and offer amazing, nature-rich recreation opportunities, as well as homes for wildlife. "This has only come about because of the combined efforts and commitment of all involved. From the local birders protecting the original wetlands through to the partners involved today, it has been a real team effort that should bring hope to everyone." Large parts of the wetlands that now form part of the SSSI were established for flood risk management purposes by the Environment Agency to slow the flow of water down the Dearne Valley to the River Don, including Bolton Ings, Adwick and Houghton and protect communities along the rivers Dearne and Don. Anthony Downing, Environment Agency catchment co-ordinator for the Don and Rother, said: "In the 1980s, the Dearne Valley was a post-industrial landscape including the bulldozed remains of the pits, spoil heaps, coking plants and railway marshalling yards, known locally as ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ because of the frequent fires that broke out there. "The transformation of the Dearne Valley following the closure of the coal mining industry and coke works to this remarkable landmark of SSSI notification is a truly fantastic achievement, and it is thanks to the tireless efforts of a partnership of organisations and dedicated individuals. "One of the key drivers of the habitat regeneration was combining nature with flood risk solutions – the washlands still provide the flood risk protection but also wider benefits not only for wildlife but also create a ‘green lung’ for the people of the Dearne Valley." Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Chief Executive

Access to the sites For people wishing to visit parts of the Dearne Valley Wetlands SSSI the following access points are open to the public (subject to the latest coronavirus restrictions – check before visiting): Worsbrough Reservoir Country Park and Local Nature Reserve managed by Barnsley Council. Main car park off the A61 at Worsbrough Bridge (parking fees apply). Carlton Marsh Nature Reserve managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. Small car park

Rachael Bice said: "A truly inspiring transformation has occurred over a few decades to make this place, so culturally important to the residents of Barnsley, into an abundant living tapestry where both wildlife and people can thrive. The Dearne Valley was stripped bare and polluted during the Industrial Revolution as coal mines reshaped the landscape and waterways in the area. "Yet nature has recovered here with help from a committed partnership stewarding the changes, and this landscape is now a national exemplar for what is possible,

open daily during working hours off Shaw Lane (the road from Carlton to Cudworth). Adwick Washlands managed by the RSPB. Small car park (free) off the B6098 between Wathupon-Dearne and Bolton-upon-Dearne. Old Moor managed by the RSPB. Large car park, visitor centre and café off the A633 Manvers Way at Broomhill. Broomhill Flash Nature Reserve managed by the Garganey Trust. Small car park (free) off Everill Gate Lane, Broomhill.

when we support nature to flourish again. It is wonderful that Natural England have designated this landscape recognising the impact of the work done with the community." Natural England has notified landowners and occupiers, and statutory bodies of the designation of the Dearne Valley Wetlands SSSI. A four month consultation period, in which people can give their views, started 13th May and ends 13th September 2021. The consultation details can be accessed at: consult.defra.gov.uk/naturalengland/dearne-valley-wetlands-sssi/

THE GLASS WORKS CLAIMS MAJOR NATIONAL REGENERATION AWARD AHEAD OF OPENING The Glass Works – the flagship development that continues to transform Barnsley town centre’s retail and leisure heart – has been crowned the winner of the prestigious Regeneration award at the Planning Awards 2021. The Planning Awards, which are organised by the industry leading planning resource for town planning professionals in the UK, are one of the most coveted and respected awards within the property industry and reward excellence in professional planning work, placemaking, urban design, economic development and regeneration. The awards are selected by a diverse panel of 20 judges, with esteemed representatives from planning, placemaking, design, heritage, public and transport sectors. The Glass Works beat seven other impressive regeneration projects across the UK – including Hendon Waterside in North London, Malt Street in South London, Kresen Kernow in Cornwall and Port Loop in Birmingham. The judges said that the

Barnsley Council-led scheme was “a great example of how strategic development and targeted investment can play a huge part in revitalising a local economy”. Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place at Barnsley Council, said: “We are grateful and unbelievably proud to see The Glass Works win this year’s Planning Award for Regeneration. To go up against some truly outstanding developments from across the country and come out on top is a huge achievement. It is a success for the Council, the project team involved, and of course, the people of Barnsley who make our town so great. “The award is recognition that the Council, our development partner Queensberry and principal contractor Henry Boot Construction, are delivering something truly significant and important for Barnsley. The Glass Works is helping us create a more dynamic and sustainable town centre environment that meets the needs of our residents, businesses and visitors. It is built upon Barnsley’s

strong traditions and sense of community and provides a modern, accessible and inviting destination for all. “It is also just the start. The investment made into The Glass Works is beginning to reap rewards, acting as a catalyst for further improvements to the town centre and providing a new sense

of confidence that can help us attract investment and deliver long-term growth.” The completed elements of The Glass Works development – including Market Kitchen, Barnsley Markets and Library @ The Lightbox – are now once again and being enjoyed by the public following recent Covid

closures. Set for completion towards the end of this year, the final phase of The Glass Works programme includes a 13-screen Cineworld, Superbowl UK bowling venue, popular family restaurants like Nando’s and shops including NEXT, Sports Direct with USC, TK Maxx and Flannels.

Car insurance premiums expected to fall by up to £35/yr as whiplash reforms take force Drivers could save up to £35 a year on their car insurance, the Ministry of Justice has said, as major reforms to the claims process for whiplash injury come into effect this week. The shake-up includes a new online portal for road traffic injury claims, while whiplash cases can no longer be settled without medical evidence. There were more than 550,000 whiplash claims in 2019/20 alone – a figure the Ministry of Justice has called "unacceptably high". But it believes the new reforms will reduce the number of claims, which in turn should allow insurers to cut premiums for millions of drivers. The Ministry of Justice says insurers have pledged to pass on savings worth a total of £1.2 billion to drivers.

A new online claims portal is among the changes introduced this week The key changes, which were introduced on Monday 31 May, include: The launch of a new online claims portal for any road traffic related personal injury claim valued at under £5,000. This includes claims for whiplash. The idea behind the portal, which is run by the Motor Insurers' Bureau and is free to use,

The downside is that if you win, you won't be entitled to recover most of your legal costs from the other side as you would be able to do with the fast track route. If you lose, you won't usually have to pay the other party's lawyer's fees but you may still have to pay certain other expenses of theirs (eg, up to £95/day for loss of earnings or leave to attend a hearing).

The introduction of a ban on the practice of seeking or offering to settle whiplash claims without medical evidence. Until 31 May 2021, claims could be settled without medical evidence. But this will now be required going forward – the portal will help claimants arrange an appointment with a medical expert who will produce a report to be used in the whiplash claim.

The Ministry of Justice expects the majority of road traffic accident claims to go through the portal in future. Over-65s' travel insurance: Nine need-to-knows Getting the right holiday cover is a much more arduous task as you age, as statistically you're more at risk of injury and illness. However, besides the extra cost, over65s' travel insurance is just like cover for younger travellers, insuring against unforeseeable mishaps which may occur before your holiday starts or while you're away.

Before you buy cover, here are nine things you should know. 1. Buy travel insurance as soon as you've booked to cover non-coronavirus cancellation and pre-trip illness.

2. Always declare medical conditions, including coronavirus, or you likely won't be covered declare your medical conditions. 3. You're usually not covered if you've been drinking or leave your possessions unattended, so always check exclusions. 4. Check you're covered for the countries you're travelling to, and remember you're not covered for cancellation if the Foreign Office warns against travel. 5. Don't forget your FREE EHIC/GHIC as it can help with medical costs in Europe. 6. Annual vs single-trip policies – which wins? Well, it depends... 7. Group policies are based on the oldest traveller so separate cover could be cheaper. 8. Check if you're already have travel insurance with your bank account. 9. Planning a cruise or going skiing? You're likely to need an add-on to the policy.

What does the Government say? Lord chancellor, Robert Buckland QC MP, said: "For too long the system for making whiplash claims has been open to abuse by individuals looking for an easy payday – with ordinary motorists paying the price. Our changes will put an end to this greedy opportunism and ultimately see savings put back into the pockets of the country's drivers."

Petrol prices reach highest level in two years Unleaded prices are at their highest level in two years, experiencing the biggest annual increase in 11-years, according to motoring firm the RAC. It blames the hikes on retailers charging motorists more to make up for falling fuel sales during the pandemic. The average cost for a litre of unleaded has soared to 129.27p, which is the highest level since August 2019 (when it stood at the same price) data from the RAC Fuel Watch reveals. Compared to this time last year, prices have risen by 22p/litre, which is the biggest 12-month increase seen for 11

years. Diesel, meanwhile, is now almost 20p dearer than at the end of last May after a 14.4p/litre hike in the past six months alone. The average cost for a litre of diesel now stands at at 131.59p, although it still hasn’t surpassed the 132p a litre it reached at the end of January 2020. According to the RAC, this means a full tank for a 55-litre family car will set you back £71.10 to fill up with unleaded, and £72.37 for diesel. The RAC adds that it's the seventh month in a row of rising prices.

Trans Pennine Trail reopens after major upgrade to surface A 3.1km stretch of the popular Trans Pennine Trail has reopened with an all new environmentally friendly surface which will make the trail accessible to many more users in all weathers. A £400,000 grant from Sustrans, funded by the Department of Transport, enabled us to improve this well-used stretch of the National Cycle Network route for walkers, cyclists and horse riders and mobility impaired users. The new Flexipave path, made using more than 16,000 recycled tyres, has been laid on the trail from Haverlands Lane at Worsbrough Bridge to Smithy Wood Lane, Dodworth. The new 2.5m-wide surface offers much more grip to walkers and cyclists in all weathers including very wet or icy conditions. The high rubber content in the surface makes it more pleasant to walk or run on than a more traditional hard surface, and it allows water to pass straight through it to the soil beneath. The ribbon was officially cut on Wednesday 26 May by Cllr John Wilson, Vice Chair of the Trans Pennine Trail Executive Board, along with representatives of Sustrans and Barnsley Council, the Trans Pennine Trail national office and the two contractors Barnsley Countryside Rangers and KBI UK. Final works on information boards, wildlife trail markers and additional

seating will be installed during the next few months to complete the project. Cllr Chris Lamb, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Transport, said: “The Trans Pennine Trail is an absolutely incredible asset and I’m delighted we’ve been able to improve it and protect it for use by people of all ages and levels of mobility. “This week we’ve also had the first community volunteer event on this section of the trail co-ordinated by Sustrans after a long 14 months of COVID restrictions. The volunteers have been planting wildflowers on the bank and car park area to improve the biodiversity on this section of the TPT.

“It’s great to see recycled tyres put to such good use, making the trail more comfortable to use and also improving drainage.” Rosslyn Colderley, Director for Sustrans in the North of England said: “It’s been great to work in partnership with Barnsley Council and the Department for Transport to help improve this section of the National Cycle Network for everyone. “It’s part of work we’re carrying out across the UK to raise the standard of the Network for all abilities. We aim to create paths which everyone can access – whether that is walking, cycling, using a mobility scooter, double buggy, or an adapted bike. “There’s lots of work to be done

and we are continually looking for more funding to improve the Network. We are keen to hear from anyone who may be able to help support this work to create paths for everyone.” Gillian Ivey, Chair of the Trans Pennine Trail Partnership, said: “This latest phase of works in Barnsley has really shown what can be achieved through partnership working. It’s wonderful to see Sustrans as a national organisation supporting the Trans Pennine Trail’s partnership’s initiative to improve accessibility in terms of surfacing and access controls.” Graham Pell, Managing Director of Dodworth based KBI UK, said: “The previous pathway was a combination

of natural ground and compacted stone, which would become extremely muddy during the winter months. In addition to using recycled materials, the Flexipave path is also porous, which will allow rainwater to drain straight through it. “We’ve previously worked on several large sections of the Trans Pennine Trail, and as part of the current project will be undertaking community work in Dodworth and Worsbrough to raise awareness of recycling and using eco-friendly materials. “The path is already receiving praise from locals, with young cyclists, wheelchair users and pram users all being able to access the route.” The Trans Pennine Trail is a coastto-coast route which runs 215 miles between Southport and Hornsea. More funding bids have been submitted to improve other sections of the trail through the borough which if successful will see work carried out before the end of March 2022. PHOTO: Cllr John Wilson, Vice Chair of the Trans Pennine Trail Executive Board, officially cuts the ribbon on the newly reopened stretch of the Trans Pennine Trail. He was accompanied by representatives of Sustrans, the Trans Pennine Trail Office, contractor KBI, and volunteers who have been planting flowers along the edge of the trail.
