Information and Advice Service still going strong Age UK Barnsley’s Information and Advice Service is a free service for Barnsley’s older people and despite the restrictions placed upon us all as a result of the pandemic it is still helping people either over the phone, 01226 776825, or by email: information@ageukbarnsley.org.uk They provide a wide range of advice covering areas such as benefits, community care, health and housing. They also have good knowledge as to what services and amenities are available locally. If they can’t give the answer directly to a query, they are very good at pointing people in the right direction. In the last financial year, the Service brought £1.5 million pounds worth of benefits into the pockets of Barnsley’s older people which as well as helping

individuals also means the local economy benefited as well. It’s still fair to say that a lot of benefits go unclaimed, either because people think that their circumstances exclude them or they’re not aware of what benefits are available. Bethan Hopkin, Age UK Barnsley’s Information & Advice Manager, confirmed this: ‘Many older people in Barnsley don’t think they are entitled to anything. Pension Credit is a good example, it costs people nothing for us to check for them, and even if it’s a small entitlement it allows people to access other benefits such as a free TV Licence.’

Royston Windows (Barnsley)

Ltd

Not all benefits are dependent on what your pension or earnings are or what you have saved. As Bethan says: ‘Attendance Allowance is a good example of a benefit that is based on people’s non-financial circumstances. It relates to how

people are living, not how much money they have.’ The service is not all about benefits, it covers a whole range of topics and has access to the national Age UK library of free information booklets, written by experts in a readable way

covering everything from healthy eating and exercise to safety in the home and the various legal matters relating to our later years. If you need Information and Advice, Age UK Barnsley is here for you.

Local Minds in South Yorkshire team up to expand support to the Armed Forces Community With more military families choosing not to live on military bases, it has increased isolation and the need for tailored support for military families in local areas. In 2018 Sheffield Mind vowed to support families living in South Yorkshire by offering therapeutic support. They were awarded funding by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust and launched the ‘Keeping Families in Mind’ project that provided talking therapies to the families of serving armed forces personnel and also hosted peer support groups, providing an opportunity for family members to meet and chat about military life. The service received regular requests for help from the families of veterans in all areas of South Yorkshire. Sheffield Mind reached out to Rotherham and Barnsley Mind and Doncaster Mind, and together they pledged to increase the offer of support to Armed Forces Families across the region. In April 2020, the local Minds were awarded funding to provide therapeutic support to families of veterans in addition to families of serving Armed Forces personnel. The service began in September

2020 and calls for support have tripled since then. Keeping Families in Mind’s project coordinator, Samantha Mulholland, said “We are absolutely over the moon to be able to offer more support. In our experience of working with military families we have found that they are so caring and have a tendency to support others before thinking about themselves; we want to let them know that it’s okay to ask for help for themselves and we are here to offer that. Military families normally have to reach breaking point before they ask for help and we now have counsellors in each Mind in South Yorkshire and more capacity to support those who have courageously asked for help.”

The project is currently providing talking therapies, as well as an Arts and Crafts Group, Creative Writing Group and a Movement and Mood group; all with the aim of improving military families’ mental health and reducing isolation. If you are a military family member

who would like support, you can contact your local Mind charity and let them know you have a family member who has served or is currently serving in the Armed Forces. Alternatively you can contact Keeping Families in Mind directly at kfim@sheffieldmind.co.uk

Burglary - How to Get Support Burglary is one of the most common types of crime, where someone breaks into a building with the intention of stealing, hurting someone or committing unlawful damage. Burglary can vary in severity from an opportunistic theft of a few items to a very serious crime involving violent attack. It isn't always a one-off event — some people may be burgled several times, or be affected by other crimes as well, such as harassment or hate crime and the impact of burglary isn’t just financial; it can also have a significant impact on your emotional well-being and sense of security.

My home has been burgled – what should I do? There are some things you can do to help reduce the impact of a burglary and to improve your home security: • Try to get your home secured as quickly as possible. If you’re in rented housing, tell your landlord about any repairs you need. If you own your home, you’ll need to make your own arrangements to get repairs done. • Look into ways of making your home more secure for the future. Some security measures can be expensive, but there are other things you can do that cost much less, such as leaving lights or a radio on when you go out and checking that all doors and windows are properly closed and locked. Your local police station or neighbourhood policing teams may be able to arrange for someone to give you home security advice. • If important documents have been stolen, you’ll also need to let banks, government departments and other organisations know. Things to check for include bank cards, cheque books, passports, benefit books, mobile phones, birth certificates and driving licences. It’s important to tell banks and building societies as soon as possible so that they can stop fraud and any further theft. • If you have home insurance and want to make a claim, you will need a crime reference number from the police.

Reporting a burglary If you’ve been a victim of burglary, you’ll need to decide whether or not to tell the police. It's okay to feel unsure about this or worry about what will happen if you do. You might think that the police won’t care. Maybe you’ve had a bad experience with the police in the past. Or perhaps you’re worried that if you talk to the police, it will only make things worse. If you decide to report to the police There are positive reasons for reporting a crime. Remember that the police deal with all sorts of crime every day; they should treat everybody fairly and equally, and put your safety first.

If you report the crime, there’s more chance that the offender will be caught or brought to justice for what they’ve done. The police also keep records of all reported crime and this information goes into government statistics and reports. These can change the way crime is dealt with by the police and other parts of the criminal justice system. If you do decide to report a crime to the police then you’ll automatically be put in touch with Victim Support. Remember that there is help and support whether you decide to involve the police or not.

How to report a crime You can report a crime in several ways: If it’s an emergency and the crime is still taking place, call 999 and ask for the police. If it’s not an emergency, do not call 999. This doesn’t mean the crime is not important – it just helps the police to make the best use of their resources. Many police forces use the 101 non-emergency number, so you can ring that number instead. You can go to your local police station and report the crime there. You can find the address and telephone number in the local telephone directory or online. Check what time your local police station is open, as not all stations are open all the time. You can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you want to remain anonymous.

What happens when I report a crime? If you do report a crime the police will explain what will happen next. They should also give you the contact

details of the police officer dealing with your case and a crime reference number. Make a note of this number somewhere safe – you will need it if you want to contact the police again about the incident, or if you want to make an insurance or compensation claim.

Getting support When you report a crime the police should also ask you if you are happy for your details to be passed to Victim Support. If you say yes, the local Victim Support organisation will automatically get your contact information and brief details about the crime. They will then contact you to see how they can help. If you don’t want them to contact you, tell the police officer. You can change your mind later and contact them directly at any time for help and support.

Making a statement Once a crime has been reported, the police will start their investigation and try to find evidence. As the victim, they’ll need to talk to you and collect as much information as possible so that they can write up a statement. If you find it difficult or upsetting to talk to the police, you can ask for a break at any point.

Victim Personal Statement After the interview, you will be asked to read the statement and check that it is correct. The police will then ask you to sign it. They should also give you the chance to make a separate Victim Personal Statement – this is your chance to say how the crime has affected you, and it will be taken into account during trial.

Getting evidence The police may also need to collect evidence from where the crime took place, such as photos or fingerprints. If you've been injured in a violent attack, the police will ask you whether you agree to have a medical examination. It's your decision, but remember that this may be an opportunity to get forensic evidence that can help bring an attacker to justice.

Keeping you informed Investigations can take some time. The police will give you the name and phone number of the officer or ‘crime desk’ responsible for your case and will keep you informed of developments – you can also contact the police by calling 101. Have your crime number ready so that they can identify your case quickly.

Help from Victim Support • They can give you and your family the emotional support you need to cope with the effects of the burglary and to think about the next steps. • They can give practical help with filling out forms, dealing with insurance, and helping you to cancel payment cards, record stolen items and replace stolen documents. • They’ll help you get advice about security systems, locks and repairs. • They can put you in touch with other organisations that can help if there are problems they can’t deal with – and can also liaise with them on your behalf if you prefer. • They can help you to deal with other agencies, such as the police or housing department, and give you information about the police and court procedures.

Ask for help When you report a crime to the police, they should automatically ask you if you would like help from a victim support organisation, but you don’t need the police to refer you. Anyone affected by crime can contact victim support organisations for help.

Wentworth Castle Gardens Wentworth Castle Gardens has been a family favourite day out since the kids were small and to this day they still look forward to racing up the tower of Stainborough Castle (built as a folly by Thomas Wentworth to impress visitors). The estate was created in the 1700s by the aforementioned Thomas Wentworth. His family owned the Wentworth Woodhouse estate and Thomas wanted to rival its grandeur. It now belongs to the National Trust, in partnership with the Northern College and Barnsley

Council museum services. I think the appeal of this place is its beautiful contrasts at every turn – the splendour of the big house, the stunning Victorian conservatory, the curving paths in the woodland, the small formal pathways in the Union Jack garden, the dramatic 500 acres of parkland, the garden monuments, such as the Corinthian Temple, and of course the castle ruins – albeit fake, they are still lots of fun. Wentworth Castle Gardens is ideal for a couple of hours of relaxing walk and

appeals to all ages. If the kids aren’t happy with the real life castle, there is a goodsized, wooden one too for them to burn off some swashbuckling sword play. And of course every good National Trust house comes with a worthy coffee shop and although it is shut at the moment you can still grab a take-away coffee and flapjack – no scones alas, but if we can go anywhere at the moment and combine a lovely walk with a hot latte then it’s a winner in my eyes!

As with all National Trust at the moment you will need to book via their website. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/wentworth-castle-gardens

HOME VISITS Are you struggling with your eyes, vision or glasses but unable to attend a Specsavers store to get checked? Did you know Specsavers can bring the test to you? If you meet the criteria to qualify the Specsavers Home Visiting team can visit you and conduct your eye test in the comfort of your own home.

You will qualify for a home eye test if you are unable to get to a store unaccompanied due to a medical condition and fall into one of the following categories: • Over 60 • Under 16 • In full time education aged 16, 17 or 18 • Receive benefits such as Income Support, Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseekers Allowance, Universal Credit • Diabetic • Over 40 with a family history of glaucoma As a front line service supporting the NHS we are still operating despite the Covid19 pandemic. All our teams are equipped with full PPE and will always enter your home wearing this. We are an experienced team. Our two directors are Mel Wilson (Ophthalmic Director) and Emma Taylor (Customer Service Director). Mel qualified as an optometrist in 1998 and has worked in store for large chains and independent businesses. She found her passion for domiciliary work 4 years ago and has been part of the home visiting team ever since. Emma is a qualified dispensing optician and, like Mel, is very experienced having worked in the industry for 13 years both in store and, more recently dedicating herself to the domiciliary team. Emma and Mel are passionate about their work and, along with their team of friendly, knowledgeable optical assistants, are

committed to helping people in the community. We often get asked how a home visit test works. And it’s really quite straightforward! Firstly, a full general health history is taken. We then take a look at your existing glasses so we can check the current prescription. This helps us understand a little more about you and compare your current prescription to your new one. We perform a range of eye health tests including the glaucoma test and a health check of the front and back of the eye. Next, we start to understand if your prescription has changed. This process is quite similar to what you will have had done in store. We use a trial frame a and range of lenses to check how well you can see the test chart. Our test chart, though, is on a tablet! Once this has been completed we can then make recommendations taking into account your

Mel Wilson

home situation and visual requirements. We have a large selection of frames some of which you will see in store and some of which are domiciliary specific. Our offers and pricing are also the same as in store. Our testing kit has a range of low vision equipment and we’re are happy to demonstrate how this works and could benefit you. This includes low visions aides for both distance near vision. Once you have chosen your new glasses, they are placed on order and generally delivered and fitted within 14 days. A full at home aftercare service is available so we can look after you and your glasses between appointments! If you feel you qualify for a home visit or want any more details, please call us on 01226 982517 where Christina or Kelly will take your call in our Barnsley based office.

Barnsley Hospice is based in Gawber on Church Street, S75 2RL. It has been providing compassionate, high-quality care for people in Barnsley with progressive, life-limiting illnesses, and their families, since 1994.

For more information about Barnsley Hospice go to www.barnsleyhospice.org Media contact: Steph Pollard, steph@whippetper.co.uk or 07761 964492.

Forest of festive fundraising for hospice MORE than 370 trees were collected and more than £7,500 was raised through our recent Barnsley Hospice Christmas Treecycle scheme. We’d like to thank everyone who signed up to our post-festive fundraiser and gave us a donation to collect their tree after the decorations came down. These donations raised just over £4,000 and this amount was almost doubled by DPD who gave us a very generous £3,500-plus* on top of that. D&D Couriers of Barnsley, our local DPD company, collected the

trees from outside people’s homes on Sunday January 10th and Shaws Waste Recycling provided the necessary skips and disposed of the trees. Both companies gave their services free of charge and we’d like to thank them for their much-valued support. Barnsley Hospice Christmas Treecycle 2021 will be launched later this year – look out for details on social media from late October. For a minimum donation of £10 we can arrange to collect your tree on our Treecycle Sunday in

January. We cover the following postcodes S36, S63, S70,S71, S72, S73, S74, S75. Get the job done, get the tree disposed of in a green way and support your local hospice. Don’t forget Barnsley Hospice is a charity and we rely on donations to keep providing our specialist compassionate care for people with progressive and life-limiting conditions. Please contact our fundraising team on 01226 244244 or fundraising@barnsleyhospice.org if you would like to raise money for the hospice.

Whilst Yorkshire Sculpture Park is a magnet for lovers of art from across the UK and overseas, it’s also an amazing place to visit for those who may not consider themselves ‘arty’ but enjoy walks in the stunning landscape of the park. And therein lies the magic of YSP. As a frequent visitor to YSP for over 30 years, the attraction of the park to me personally has morphed from being a place to meet up for a walk and lunch with family and friends, to an inexpensive day out with my energetic young daughter, to visiting specifically to take in the new exhibitions. Over time, YSP, introduced me to and fostered my interest in contemporary art without me realising it was happening – it was encouraging my appreciation of art by stealth! How could anyone walk around the incredibly beautiful estate and not be wowed by the huge sculptures which you may happen upon during your walk or actively seek out. During non-Covid times, it’s quite possible to pack up a picnic and spend a full day exploring the park and indoor galleries. Children love it and even the most energetic can let off steam in the vast park, which, even when busy, never feels overcrowded –

what an amazing way to encourage an appreciation of art from an early age. Families can visit, with children and dogs in tow, and still enjoy a relaxing few hours in the fresh air with minimal stress, and adults without children are able to visit without feeling the stress of other people’s energetic children encroaching on their enjoyment. The park is certainly large enough to seek out solitude, should you wish, and to lose yourself in the serenity and beauty of the park. Situated in between Barnsley and Wakefield in the 500-acre, 18th-century Bretton Hall estate, YSP was founded in 1977 by Executive Director Peter Murray. A Bretton Hall College lecturer at the time, Peter Murry proposed siting sculpture around the Estate in the open air, opening the landscape to the public and enabling open access to contemporary art and sculpture. It was the first sculpture park in the UK, and is the largest of its kind in Europe, mounting a world-class, year-round temporary exhibitions programme across six indoor galleries and the open air, which runs alongside the permanent open-air sculptures in the park. YSP provides the only place in Europe to see

Barbara Hepworth’s The Family of Man in its entirety alongside a significant collection of sculpture, including bronzes by Henry Moore, and sitespecific works by Andy Goldsworthy, David Nash and James Turrell. What an absolute gem of a place to have on our doorstep, especially during recent times, when many need to reconnect with nature, beautiful landscapes and art, to nurture wellness and a sense of hope for the future. During Covid restrictions, whilst the indoor galleries and centre have had to close, the outdoor open-air exhibitions have remained accessible to the public and there are some amazing pieces of art in the park which are definitely worth a visit. To comply with government restrictions, YSP has had to introduce a booking system to monitor and restrict numbers, and certain parts of the park have one way systems in place to ensure social distancing, so ensure you book before you visit. As we’re in a state of flux with regards to restrictions, it’s advisable to keep an eye on the YSP website to check on current exhibitions, booking requirements and the areas of the park are accessible.

Joana Vasconcelos: Beyond Celebrated Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos creates vibrant, often monumental sculpture, using fabric, needlework and crochet alongside everyday objects from saucepans to wheel hubs. She frequently uses items associated with domestic work and craft to comment from a feminist perspective on national and collective identity, cultural tradition and women’s roles in society. The hand-crafted versus the industrial is reflected in one of Vasconcelos’ most energetic and colourful works, Pop Galo [Pop Rooster] (2016). Inspired by the image of the Portuguese rooster, Pop Galo brings historic and modern methods of making together, fusing handmade ceramic tiles and LED light technology, to create a contemporary pop art statement which celebrates the rooster of Barcelos – the most popular piece of the country’s traditional pottery. At over ninemetres-high and covered by 17,000 glazed tiles, by day the work traditionally represents the pop culture icon. At dusk, Pop Galo becomes animated by 15,000 LED lights, illuminating the historic

parkland. Programmed alongside the lights, a composition by musician Jonas Runa plays from the rooster. Also in the open air is Solitário [Solitaire] (2018), a seven-metre-high ring made of golden car wheel rims topped with a huge diamond crafted from crystal whisky glasses. Representing the stereotypical ambition of our society to acquire wealth and material possessions, the work unites symbols of luxury – cars, jewellery and alcohol – which bridge social classes. Sited at one of the highest points in the Park and drawing attention to one of the most wonderful views across the landscape, Solitário will entice visitors uphill and create delight in the discovery of its fabrication. Made from stainless-steel saucepans, the iconic oversized silver stilettos of Marilyn (2009/2011) comment on social conventions and highlight the division between women’s traditional domestic and contemporary public roles. Referencing Marilyn Monroe, one of the most notable American actresses to symbolise female sexuality, the work pays homage to her absent figure. Marilyn proposes a revision of femininity by drawing attention to dichotomies which play a significant role in Vasconcelos’ practice, including private versus public life, tradition versus modernity, and ‘pop’ culture versus ‘high’ culture.

These sculptures are joined by the stunning and elaborate Red Independent Heart #3 (2013). For this work, Vasconcelos makes use of the form of another well-known Portuguese emblem, the Heart of Viana, which symbolises honesty and generosity, and scales it up to over three metres high. The sculpture rotates in the gallery space and is made entirely of red plastic cutlery, which has been abstracted to such an extent that the lines between luxury and coarseness are blurred. Dramatically lit, it is accompanied by recorded Portuguese fado songs, which speak of love, loss and the conflict between emotion and reason. Vasconcelos’ work has been recognised with major exhibitions at the Palace of Versailles, Paris (2012), where she was the first woman and youngest artist to present a solo exhibition; and Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao (2018), where she was the first Portuguese artist to present a solo exhibition.

Meatballs in Rich Tomato Sauce This is a favourite with our family and, if you have the basics – mince, onion and tinned tomatoes – you can add to the sauce whatever else you have handy to either give it a specific flavour or to make it go further. I often add very finely chopped peppers and courgettes, or if you want the sauce spicy, you could try adding some finely chopped spicy pepperoni and chillies. If you want to make the minced beef go further to make more meatballs, you could add breadcrumbs or finely chopped/grated vegetables such as mushrooms, carrot etc. METHOD: 1. Put the minced beef in a bowl and mix in approx. 1 tsp of dried oregano and a dash of Hendersons Relish and season with salt and pepper. Give the minced beef a good mix with your hands. 2. With wet hands, form the minced beef mix into meatballs. You can make them whatever

Feeds a family of 4. Ingredients:

size you choose – we usually make them the size of an small plum or apricot. Set the meatballs to one side on a plate.

500g Minced Beef 1 Large Onion (finely chopped) 2 x Garlic Cloves (crushed) 2 x 400g Tins of Chopped Tomatoes 1 x Beef Oxo Tomato Puree Splash Tabasco Sauce (Optional) Splash Hendersons Relish (Optional) Splash Red Wine (Optional) Dried Oregano Dried Basil Salt & Pepper

3. Brown the meatballs in a large frying pan until brown on all sides and set aside on a clean plate. 4. Fry the chopped onion and crushed garlic in the same pan, adding more oil if needed. If you are adding wine, add now to the onion and garlic and allow to boil up for a couple of minutes. Add three or four spoonfuls of the chopped tomatoes and scrape bottom of pan to pick up any residue from browning the meatballs. Add a good tablespoon of tomato puree, the beef oxo, splash of Tabasco sauce, a sprinkling of dried basil and season with salt and pepper. 5. Empty the tomato sauce into a roasting dish, add the rest of the tomatoes and stir well. Place in a preheated moderate oven (180˚C, 350˚F, Gas Mark 4) for 15 minutes.

6. Remove from oven and stir well. Place meatballs in the roasting dish and press into the tomato sauce. Place back in the oven and cook for approx. 45 mins. Check the meatballs after

30 mins and if they are burning, loosely lay a piece of foil on top of the dish.

8. We typically serve the meatballs with spaghetti, or other pasta, and parmesan cheese.

7. Remove from the oven and stir the sauce well.

Makes 10-12 small meatballs

Quick and Easy Boozy Tiramisu In a traditional Tiramisu, egg yolks are whisked with sugar and added to the mascarpone cheese and cream and then whisked egg whites are folded in to give an airy texture. This recipe is a bit of a cheats Tiramisu as it leaves out the eggs. We think it’s just as delicious, and even more if left for a day for the flavours to mingle together. Let us know how you think it compares to the more traditional Tiramisu.

Ingredients

METHOD: 1. Whisk the double cream, sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form. 2. Add the mascarpone cheese and rum and whisk until stiff peaks form. 3. In a separate bowl, mix the coffee and liqueur well and quickly dunk the sponge fingers, one at a time before laying as a single layer in an 8” x 8” dish (20cm x 20cm) with sufficiently deep sides.

The sponge fingers very quickly become too soggy, so dunk on both sides for no more than a second or two – they need to retain their shape. 4. Spread half of the cream mixture on top of the sponge fingers and repeat with

another layer of dunked sponge fingers and a second layer of the cream mixture. 5. Dust thickly with cocoa powder, cover and cool in the fridge for at least 4 hours, and preferably overnight, before serving.

We get approx. 10 small servings from this recipe, but as the recipe is quite rich, a small serving is perfect.

225ml (8floz) Double Cream 225g (8oz) Mascarpone Cheese 75g (3oz) Caster Sugar 1 tsp Vanilla Extract 1 tblsp Dark Rum to add to the cream mix 2 Cups Extra Strong Espresso Coffee left too cool to room temperature 1 tblsp Liqueur to add to the Coffee (Tia Maria, Amaretto etc) 1 pack Sponge Fingers (also called Savoiardi Biscuits/Fingers) Cocoa Powder
