Barnsley Life - December/January 2020 P3

Welcome to the Christmas Issue Welcome to the Dec-Jan issue of Barnsley Life. As we come to the close of the year, it’s unlikely many of us will forget what a difficult year 2020 has been, with the difficulties manifesting in different ways. Human tragedy has been very hard to witness, with losses, isolation and emotional difficulties experienced by too many people. Many businesses, families and individuals have suffered financial hardship that could take years to recover from and it seems that some of the big corporations have boomed at the expense of the little independents. But there have been positives for some… there appears to be a renewed sense of community, an enthusiasm for supporting small independent local businesses and many have experienced a more flexible way of living. Although most people want to ‘get back to normal’ as soon as possible, it was nice for a short while to hit the pause button and for life to move along more slowly, to hear nature without the drone of vehicles and for families to spend more time together.

Do you know what the ‘ICE’ Number is? Do you have one?

For those who have suffered heartache and hardship during this year, my heart truly goes out to you. We can only hope that 2021 brings hope, positivity and more stability. To all our readers, we wish you a lovely Christmas, however you are celebrating, and a more hopeful 2021. Stay safe, Caron

Royston Windows (Barnsley)

Ltd

The ICE number is the brainchild of British paramedic Bob Brotchie, employed by the East Anglian Ambulance NHS Trust. In the course of his experience, Brothchie had discovered that, though the majority of accident victims carried no next of kin details, over 80% carried a mobile phone. Reflecting on some difficult situations he had dealt with, where victims were unable to speak through injury, it occurred to him that a uniform approach for identifying an emergency contact on a mobile phone would make life easier for everyone. As well as the quick identification of a contact, emergency services could be sure that the number related to a person who the accident victim would want to be contacted in such a situation, someone who could for instance give consent for emergency treatment or provide vital information about an individual's medical history. In April 2005, Brotchie launched a campaign to promote the concept of ICE numbers, backed by mobile phone company Vodafone and endorsed by Falklands War veteran Simon Weston. It wasn't until the terrorist attacks in London later that year, however, that the idea of ICE numbers really began to take off, rapidly spreading across to the USA, Australia, and throughout the world. Global exposure of the concept occurred

practically overnight, with international media coverage and a largescale e-mail campaign helping to spread the word. ICE stands for In Case of Emergency. An ICE number is the telephone number of a friend or relative who should be contacted in an emergency situation. The number can be identified in a mobile phone address book by the prefix ICE, as in for example ICE Mum, ICE Chris, etc. If all mobile phone users carried an ICE number, should they be victims of an accident, paramedics and emergency services would have a straightforward way of ascertaining their identity and any vital personal information by talking to a nominated person. Phone users could have more than one ICE number, storing them in priority order as ICE1, ICE2, ICE3, etc. Some of the newer mobile phones have an alternative to the ICE Number built into the phone. Apple, for example, have made it possible to access ‘Emergency’ information even when the phone screen is locked – and there is an option to store emergency contacts, medical history and drug reactions and allergies within this file. Access to this type of information could be the difference between life and death in an emergency situation.

Rabbit Ings Country Park It’s always a bit mind blowing when you happen upon somewhere interesting near to where you’ve grown up, and you had no idea it was there! Rabbit Ings Country Park is such a place, and at a very substantial 76 hectares, and offering beautiful and accessible walks, it’s incredible that not everyone in the neighbouring localities are aware of it. Rabbit Ings Country Park Ranger, Mick Birkinshaw, gave us a tour of the country park, told us a bit of his family history, describing family ties to the place going back to the 1890s, and explained how the country park came into being. Rabbit Ings is a country park located on the former colliery yard and spoil heap of the Monkton Colliery and then the Royston Drift Mine, which closed in 1989. The 76-hectare site officially opened in 2011 and is equivalent to 106 full-size football pitches! The Park is home to a variety of wildlife, including newts, snakes, herons and deer. When it first opened, the park was under the ownership of Wakefield Council, but in 2012, the council transferred the land into the ownership of the Land Trust, who contracted Groundwork Trust to manage the site. The reclamation of the site was supported through the Government’s National Coalfield Programme being implemented by the Homes and Communities Agency in partnership with Wakefield Council and Yorkshire Forward. The site had suffered environmental degradation with large areas of bare shale and the slopes of the 40m high tip were very steep in places and potentially dangerous. Part of the reclamation scheme involved earth moving to lessen the slopes and make it possible for new

vegetation to become established. Over 130,000 tonnes of soil making material have been used on site to create new areas of woodland, heathland and grassland habitats. New soaring footpaths and cycle tracks have been created, offering stunning views and there are areas of extensive tree and shrub planting, as well as sports pitches for use by the community. The extensive path network offers a

variety of walks suitable for differing levels of fitness with benches around the site offering a place to rest and appreciate the great views. The hard surfaced paths are ideal for a family cycle while the hill provides for those looking for more of a challenge! For horse riders, easy access on to the site is available at each entry point as well as a bridleway, and there’s a grass canter track on the North slope.

The park benefits from an event field by the car park and three well maintained football pitches along with two changing rooms and a referees room. Groundwork’s team at Rabbit Ings routinely plan events and activities for the community and focus their time on educating children and young people from local schools. The aim of these school trips is to teach young people about wildlife, green spaces and local history.

Rabbit Ings Country Park before and after the site reclamation

The rabbit A striking image of a rabbit is carved on the hillside which can be seen from miles around. The rabbit, similar to the black rabbit on Watership Down, is a Norse image which ties in with the name of the site – ‘ings’ being a Norse word or description of low lying wetland and of course a rabbit! The rabbit was created with the help of 192 local school children. Spectacular views can be enjoyed from the viewpoint at the top of the hill. Whilst at the foot of the hill woodland and wetland provide a marvellous

1. Starting at Rabbit Ings Country Park car park, exit the car park and turn left along the road under the railway bridge. Beyond Cross Lane, turn left along the Trans Pennine Trail South, following the Barnsley Canal. 2. Turn left along the road, cross over where it narrows and go straight on at the bend along Pools Lane. Continue beyond the playground - through the kissing gate but instead pass through the hedge beside the barrier. Continue over the railway line and turn left along the improved path that curves right through the wooded Pool Ings. Cross an old railway bridge and continue along the track bed past the football pitches into the Country Park.

3. Turn right to follow the perimeter path of the Country Park. This path hugs the base of the hill. Continue past the Land Trust map and start to ascend. Turn left at the junction, pass a wooden seat and climb higher, rising to a metal seat at a junction, and a grand viewpoint. Turn right behind the seat to the next main junction. 4. Double back down to the right and turn left at the junction, back onto the perimeter path with the light blue waymark. At the next red and blue post you can visit the lakeshore and the main route passes a second lake. Bear left on the red route uphill and keep straight on following the little valley on your left past an information panel. Keep right on the red and blue route and turn right at the junction to return to the car park and toilets.

Rycroft Leisure - Looking forward to welcoming everyone back after lockdown My visit to Rycroft Leisure wasn’t quite the full experience I would have liked as we were in the middle of Lockdown #2, and the centre and facilities were closed to the public. I did however get a great tour of the facilities and flavour of the place, and I had the opportunity to chat to members of staff. I also had the lovely opportunity to sample their delicious cream tea and hot chocolate, which I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. It was a real shame that I wasn’t able to see the centre whilst it was alive with people enjoying the impressive facilities, but the staff did a great job of filling in with vivid descriptions and it was easy to imagine how lively it could get. What a great asset the centre is to the local communities, providing sports facilities, a great bar and lounge, a youth club and a hub for various local groups to meet up. The centre is at the heart of the community and has been heavily involved, with other partners, in the community response during the covid lockdowns, helping vulnerable people to access medical appointments, food and essential supplies. Scott Mincher, Centre Manager, and Sandra Hull, Finance Officer, gave me the grand tour. They are clearly very passionate about the centre and were so welcoming and friendly, their enthusiasm was obvious. The facilities really are excellent, with 6 football pitches and an all weather 3G pitch. It was encouraging to hear that the pitches are well used by the community and also provide a home for Ryhill FC and other football teams. Also outside is a bowling green, and a play area, which has a well equipped section for small children and a more exciting section for older juniors, with, amongst other things a zip wire, buddy swing and climbing frame. There are plans to create a community café and renovate the patio area for visitors to sit outside whilst the children are playing, or having a drink and a bite to eat after enjoying the centre’s facilities – at the moment (or when restrictions are relaxed), visitors are able to take advantage of the seating area with drinks, both hot and cold, from the bar. A lovely bar and lounge area is, I imagine, the hub of the centre when times are more normal. Double doors

can open out into the sports hall next to the bar which gives the option of extra tables and seating, creating a bigger venue for special occasions. The sports hall is usually well used for badminton and different classes, such as Karate sessions, children’s birthday parties, and there are future plans to hold live entertainment and roller-disco sessions, which sounds amazing. A stage and 200 chairs and tables make it an ideal conference or party venue. Eleanor Bradbury, Youth and Community Work Co-ordinator, spoke to me about the Youth Club which has different sessions for 8-19 year olds. Under normal circumstances, summer activities would include trips and special events and plenty for the young people to get involved with. For the more mature users of the centre, a ‘Young at Heart’ club meets regularly (when Covid restrictions aren’t in place) and there are plans to introduce more clubs to the centre to cater for different interests. A fully equipped indoor gym over two rooms, completes the centre’s facilities. The staff were proud to have been involved in the centre’s involvement in the community response during covid lockdowns helping vulnerable local residents, and distributing food parcels to those who needed extra support. The centre is now in the process of organising Christmas food hampers in collaboration with the Learning Centre. Specifically for individuals and families in Ryhill and Havercroft who have encountered loss of income or financial hardship, it’s hoped the food hampers will bring a touch of relief this Christmas. The centre already had in place a

service whereby wholesome meals are cooked at the centre, from fresh ingredients, and delivered out hot to older residents in the nearby localities. The meals, which cost only £3.50 per meal and are available on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, are as close to ‘home cooked’ as one can get, without actually being cooked at home – on the day I visited, the meal was Cottage Pie and if it tasted as delicious as it smelt, the customers were in for a real treat! The centre is able to provide these meals from surplus food donated by local businesses such as the Coop and M&S which are used to cook the meals that are delivered out. Whatever food is left over from the meals is given to the local food bank. If you live within the local areas around Ryhill and Havercroft and would like to receive hot meals, please get in touch with the centre. The meals delivery service was given a boost when support through the Coronavirus Community Support Fund, with money from the Lottery, enabled the centre to buy a much needed van and expand the service to vulnerable people. #CommunitiesCan If anyone would like more information about the centre or the meals delivery service please contact the centre manager, Scott, on 01226 723 659. To register for a Christmas food hamper, please contact Eleanor on 01226 723 659 or email: youth@rycroftleisure.com Keep an eye on the centre’s website and Facebook page to see what’s new and when services and facilities are opening back up.

Christmas time in Castleton

2020 will go down in history as an extraordinary year… for many reasons we are all familiar with. For me, the truly positive thing to come out of lockdown and the tier system has been quality family time, particularly walks. During the summer we enjoyed discovering lanes, fields, paths and woods we had never previously trodden. And now, the autumn walks have been just as enjoyable – having time to enjoy the colours of this season has been good for my spirit. Next, as we enter winter I will look forward to the frosty air and hope that we can spend more time walking locally, but also in our family favourite spots – COVID rules permitting. One such place being Castleton, the honeypot village in the Peak District. Castleton at Christmas time is special. The beautifully lit fir trees line the shop, pubs and cafes through the heart of the village and if you’re wandering about early

evening you might even glimpse Santa on his horse-drawn cart. It’s awe and wonder for the young, but its magic isn’t lost on the older of us either. The children have always loved paddling in the shallow stream that flows through the village (‘Peakshole Water’ named after its source at Peak Cavern) and on a muddy day it serves as a rather lovely boot washer! We always look forward to visiting Peveril Stores, named after the castle that stands above. Homemade pasties, sausage rolls, cakes and slices are a welcome reward for the climb through Cave Dale, beyond through the limestone valley to Mam Tor and back down. The store also sells handmade chocolates and all sorts of delicious treats that make welcome stocking fillers. Aah, Christmas in Castleton is a special thing. Let’s hope we can all visit soon and have some sparkle this winter.

Police advise on home security

- Securing Doors & Windows and reducing risk of Eurocylinder burglaries Cylinder locks are present on the majority of UPVC doors and we are aware that some offenders have developed a way of overcoming them to then gain access into a home. West Yorkshire Police have led on this issue nationally with colleagues at Secured by Design and industry/trade authorities such as the British Standards Institute, the Door & Hardware Federation and the Master Locksmiths Association. There are now ways that you can reduce the opportunity for a euro-cylinder burglary to take place at your home. Two nationally recognised standards exist for cylinders: • TS 007 (1 star or 3 star) • Sold Secure Diamond Standard for lock cylinders (SS312) Door handles are also tested to TS 007 standards and can achieve a 2 star rating. West Yorkshire Police recommend that a 3 star solution is the minimum to achieve if you are upgrading your cylinders. The fitting of a cylinder achieving a 3 star rating is the preferred option given it provides the maximum level of security for a lock under the TS 007 testing process. However, 3 stars can also be achieved by fitting a 1 star cylinder in combination with a 2 star handle. De-

pending on your budget you could obviously achieve a 5 star solution too by the fitting of a 3 star cylinder in combination with a 2 star handle. The star rating system has been designed to give you options depending on your personal circumstances and existing security. Cylinders achieving the Sold Secure Diamond Standard (SS312) are also tested to the highest standards and this standard is recognised alongside TS 007 at a national level.

Top 5 Tips: • Look to upgrade your cylinder locks to one’s that have either achieved a 3 star rating under TS 007 and/or the Sold Secure Diamond Standard (SS312). Now more than ever, no one should have no one As we approach Christmas at the end of a year blighted by Covid-19, the message from Age UK Barnsley comes loud and clear, we all need to do what we can to ensure that older people in Barnsley are not left lonely and isolated over the holiday period. The local charity is currently operating across Barnsley working with Barnsley Council to help reach those without family and friend support networks. This has been happening since the March lockdown and includes telephone befriending, wellbeing packs, an Activities at Home programme and its own free

HOME VISITS Are you struggling with your eyes, vision or glasses but unable to attend a Specsavers store to get checked? Did you know Specsavers can bring the test to you? If you meet the criteria to qualify the Specsavers Home Visiting team can visit you and conduct your eye test in the comfort of your own home.

You will qualify for a home eye test if you are unable to get to a store unaccompanied due to a medical condition and fall into one of the following categories: • Over 60 • Under 16 • In full time education aged 16, 17 or 18 • Receive benefits such as Income Support, Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseekers Allowance, Universal Credit • Diabetic • Over 40 with a family history of glaucoma As a front line service supporting the NHS we are still operating despite the Covid19 pandemic. All our teams are equipped with full PPE and will always enter your home wearing this. We are an experienced team. Our two directors are Mel Wilson (Ophthalmic Director) and Emma Taylor (Customer Service Director). Mel qualified as an optometrist in 1998 and has worked in store for large chains and independent businesses. She found her passion for domiciliary work 4 years ago and has been part of the home visiting team ever since. Emma is a qualified dispensing optician and, like Mel, is very experienced having worked in the industry for 13 years both in store and, more recently dedicating herself to the domiciliary team. Emma and Mel are passionate about their work and, along with their team of friendly, knowledgeable optical assistants, are

committed to helping people in the community. We often get asked how a home visit test works. And it’s really quite straightforward! Firstly, a full general health history is taken. We then take a look at your existing glasses so we can check the current prescription. This helps us understand a little more about you and compare your current prescription to your new one. We perform a range of eye health tests including the glaucoma test and a health check of the front and back of the eye. Next, we start to understand if your prescription has changed. This process is quite similar to what you will have had done in store. We use a trial frame a and range of lenses to check how well you can see the test chart. Our test chart, though, is on a tablet! Once this has been completed we can then make recommendations taking into account your

home situation and visual requirements. We have a large selection of frames some of which you will see in store and some of which are domiciliary specific. Our offers and pricing are also the same as in store. Our testing kit has a range of low vision equipment and we’re are happy to demonstrate how this works and could benefit you. This includes low visions aides for both distance near vision. Once you have chosen your new glasses, they are placed on order and generally delivered and fitted within 14 days. A full at home aftercare service is available so we can look after you and your glasses between appointments! If you feel you qualify for a home visit or want any more details, please call us on 01226 982517 where Christina or Kelly will take your call in our Barnsley based office.

Barnsley Residents Keep on Smiling As we get older, it’s even more important to look after our oral health, making sure that we keep our mouth, teeth and our gums healthy.

have been left untreated which has resulted in more complex issues developing, in turn causing more pain and discomfort that could have been prevented.

concern older people may experience is dry mouth which can be eased by having small sips of water; if the problem does persist, contact your local dental practice.

They should be removed overnight and placed in cold water to allow your gums to rest.” (Mariam Rashid, Barnsley Local Dental Committee Chair)

Oral health and Coronavirus (COVID-19)

‘’It is important that if you have any concerns or worries relating to your oral health that you phone your local dental practice.’’ (Clare Rushforth, Dental practice Manager)

Natural Teeth Care

It is important that you rinse your dentures well after every meal using drinking water to remove any food that may be stuck in your dentures after eating. If your dentures do begin to rub, become loose, or break, please seek help from your local dental practice.

The Coronavirus Pandemic has led to individuals of all ages having to adapt to a new way of living throughout the majority of 2020. Since the end of the first lockdown, most NHS dental practices across Barnsley borough have remained opened for urgent dental treatment and emergencies. Although most NHS practices are not undergoing routine NHS dental appointments, it is important to recognise that dental practices remain open for any concerns that you may be experiencing. You should seek the help and advice of a dentist; do not let a problem with your oral health go untreated. “Pick up the phone and call your local dental practice.” (Mariam Rashid, Barnsley Local Dental Committee Chair)

Oral health problems during the Coronavirus Pandemic Throughout the year, older people have not been visiting dental practices as much as dentists would like. Dentists have recognised that often dental problems

Did you know? Tooth decay is damage to a tooth caused by dental plaque, turning sugars into acid although is largely preventable. Dental plaque coats your teeth, which contributes to the incidence of gum disease and tooth decay. If dental problems go untreated this can lead to issues with speaking, eating and socialising impacting upon your quality of life.

Dentists have seen a rise in infections that have been caused by broken or cracked teeth. They have also observed older people selfrepairing their dentures. Dentists strongly advise against self-repairing dentures as this can do more harm than good. They advise that you get in touch with your local dental practice for help.

Oral Healthcare practices It is important to brush in small circular motions from where your teeth meet your gums twice daily; once in the morning and once in the evening as this will ensure that dental plaque is removed. Using interdental brushes and dental floss after toothbrushing will help remove food from in between your teeth. “Make your teeth and smile a priority, brush twice a day and floss daily.” (Mariam Rashid, Barnsley Local Dental Committee Chair)

It is important to brush with a toothpaste which contains 1450ppm of fluoride, this information can be found on the packaging. If your teeth do break or crack, dentists recommend keeping the fragments of broken teeth as these may be used to repair your teeth. If you experience pain and discomfort in your teeth, try drinking through a straw, eating soft foods or using a soft toothbrush to help ease this pain. Similarly, if you experience sensitivity in your teeth it may be beneficial to use sensitive toothpaste, but please get in touch with your local dental practice if pain and discomfort continues.

Denture care “Dentures should be cleaned twice daily with a toothbrush and water.

If you recognise any changes in your oral health; breaks or cracks in your natural teeth, your dentures become damaged, you are experiencing dry mouth or any other concerns, please contact your dentist to receive support and advice. “Give your local dental practice a call, they have safe measures in place, and are there to help.” (Mariam Rashid, Barnsley Local Dental Committee Chair) Produced by; Hannah Rowley, Public Health Postgraduate Student

To find your local dentist visit: www.nhs.uk/service-search/find-a-dentist or call 111.

If you suffer from Arthritis using an electronic toothbrush may be more beneficial than a manual toothbrush as this may help aid grip.

Mouth care Looking after your mouth is equally as important as looking after your natural teeth and dentures. It is important that you contact your local dentist if you have had an ulcer for more than two-weeks. If a mouth ulcer does develop, dentists advise that you do not wear your dentures and phone your local dental practice for advice. Another

Friends aim to smash £10,000 in mask-making fundraiser for hospice Two friends are on target to raise £10,000 in a mammoth mask-making fundraiser for Barnsley Hospice. Janet Mellor, of Pilley, and Jocelyn Feetham, of Pogmoor, have made more than 1,800 masks since they started sewing in March and have already raised over £7,000. The pair have now decided they’d like to reach £10,000 and have made a new range of festive face coverings to reach that goal. Janet, a seamstress, said: “We started to make masks at the beginning of the first lockdown and set out to make £300 for the hospice, but sales have gone wild so we’ve now decided to set ourselves the new target of £10,000.” Janet and Jocelyn are raising money in memory of

Barnsley Hospice is based in Gawber on Church Street, S75 2RL. It has been providing compassionate, high-quality care for people in Barnsley with progressive, life-limiting illnesses, and their families, since 1994.

For more information about Barnsley Hospice go to www.barnsleyhospice.org Media contact: Steph Pollard, steph@whippetper.co.uk or 07761 964492. their friend Teresa’s daughter, Jill Mullet, who received respite care at Barnsley Hospice while she waited for a double lung transplant. When Jill finally had a transplant, after seven years on the list, the lungs were sadly rejected and she passed away in April last year, aged 52. Janet said: “We are making the masks in Jill’s memory. She was fortunate to have spent some time at the hospice and was looked after

with such care and dignity. Teresa can’t thank the hospice enough for taking care of her daughter.” Janet and Jocelyn bring years of experience with textiles to their mask-making task. Janet, aged 64, worked as a machinist from the age of 15 until her retirement at local manufacturers - H Booth and sons, SR Gents, the Barnsley Hat Company and Supersuits. Jocelyn, aged 58, is a Podiatrist but also a keen quilt maker. She’ll be

turning scraps from the maskmaking into a 2020 memory quilt for the hospice too. The pair bought textiles for the masks from Serendipity fabric shop in Birdwell and Oh Sew Sweet in Wombwell, as well as receiving donations of fabric remnants from family and friends. Janet said: “We couldn’t have raised the amount we have without the support of family and friends including all those who’ve taken our masks to sell in their

workplaces, shops and cafes. Janet and Jocelyn’s masks are on sale at Tinker’s Café, the Well Chemist, Allotment Deli and health centre in Hoyland, Teapot Café and Sam’s hairdressers in GiIroyd, Pilley post office, Wortley golf club and, Penistone British Legion Club. They are priced £4 each and all profits go to charity. They have so far donated £6,000 to Barnsley Hospice and have also made a donation of £1,000 to this year’s poppy appeal. Community fundraising manager at Barnsley Hospice Vicky Stead said: “It has just been

amazing what Janet and Jocelyn have achieved this year. They brought us £1,000, then another £1,000, then another. We are incredibly grateful for their hard work and hope they sell all their Christmas range of masks too.” Barnsley Hospice provides compassionate, high-quality care for anyone in the borough with a progressive life-limiting illness, including cancer, motor neurone disease and heart disease. The charity needs to raise over £2m each year to fund patient care and support for families. A further £1.6m is provided by the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

Attitude over ability

This issue Chris Lodge gives us an insight into the Fit Reds, It was over 8 years ago now that my wife dropped the not-so-subtle Fit Reds leaflet into my hand. She’d noticed (as indeed I had but didn’t want to admit) that I had put some weight on and needed to do something about it. Having never been a gym bunny but someone who had played and loved football all of my life, the -award-winning eight-week healthy lifestyle programme delivered by Reds in the Community for

inactive adults over the age of 35, immediately appealed. It was one of the best decisions I (or more to the point, my wife) ever made. The course, through the influence of football, supports men and women to make positive lifestyle changes and become more physically active. It consists of a series of two-hour workshops, the first hour of which you are provided with information regarding

diet, nutrition and healthy lifestyles. The second half of the weekly session, delivered by qualified coaches, involves a progressively challenging activity programme. I must admit, from a personal point of view, it was this second half of the course that appealed to me the most, but I found the ‘classroom’ hour extremely informative and helpful too. What the leaflet failed to mention however, was that by joining the Fit Reds initiative with like-minded men, you were in serious danger of making friends for life, which is certainly what happened in my case. Having completed the course, and yes, it worked, I had lost weight and felt fitter, there was the opportunity to continue playing football on a weekly basis, an opportunity I was only too pleased to accept. And this was where the real fun started! During my time with the Fit Reds, I have been lucky enough to play a match

on the hallowed turf that is Oakwell, travelled to Holland to play against a team from one of the members’ home town of Bergen op Zoom, and completed a near 70-mile bike ride from Barnsley to York. For me, as a lifelong Barnsley fan, the opportunity to play on the same pitch that my heroes had played on was a memory that will live with me for the rest of my life, the trips to Holland, which included a most poignant trip the war graves, also created lifelong memories, but this year’s bike ride to York perhaps best summed up the camaraderie that has built up over the years. The bike ride is something that the Fit Reds organise on a yearly basis, but this year was particularly significant in that it was done in order to raise money for one of their own. As you may have read in a previous issue, the ride was dedicated to raise money for Phil Shore, one of the founder members of Fit

it’s the Fit Reds way! the award winning health and fitness scheme Reds, who had sadly been diagnosed with cancer. The fact that the charity trip raised over £3,000 for Phil showed how Fit Reds has developed over the years, it has become much more than a health and fitness course, in Phil’s words it

has become like a ‘band of brother’s’. The Fit Reds are always on the look out for support, so a big thank you to Mick Clayton and GQA Qualifications from their home and away kit sponsorship.

The courses are free and due to support from local area councils new courses are planned to start in January 2021. For further information contact sean.margison@barnsleyfc.co.uk

Innocent Smoothies started wearing little knitted hats back in 2003, with a donation of 25p going to Age UK for every behatted bottle sold. These woolly masterpieces are knitted and crocheted by thousands of legendary volunteers. Over 1.5 million little hats were sent in for last year’s Big Knit, bringing the total raised for Age UK over the years to just under £3 million. Hats will be back on bottles in 2022, and we’d love to raise more for Age UK than ever. Anyone can get involved, whether you’re a pro or a novice. Innocent drinks are already collecting hats for the 2022 smoothie bottles

FAQs What do I do with my little hat now? You’ve been to the shop. You’ve bought a smoothie with a little hat. You’ve basked in the warm glow of helping Age UK. You’ve drunk your smoothie. Now what do you do with your little hat? These little hats have been used for all sorts of things, from desk ornaments to bunting, gear stick warmers to Christmas tree decorations. They’ve been modelled by all sorts of action figures, not to mention animals great and small. If you would like to re-donate your little hat to the project, it can be sent back, so it can go on another smoothie next year and raise even more money for Age UK. Returning a hat is free and easy. Just pop it in an envelope, write Freepost BIG KNIT on it in big letters, and stick it in a post box. Your hat will find its way back to us and live another life next Big Knit. What if I’m not very good at knitting or crocheting? As long as your hat fits nicely atop our smoothies, it doesn’t matter how basic or elaborate it is or whether or not it has bells and whistles. Every hat makes a massive difference to older people.

What size should the hats be? The best way to test your hat fits is to nip to the shops and get a smoothie to act as a test dummy. If you can’t do that, when laid out flat, your hat dimensions should measure about 5-7cm along the bottom and at least 3cm high.

What do I do with them when I’ve finished, or start disappearing under a woolly mountain? Your little knitted hats can be dropped into your local Age UK shop of office or you can pop them in the post to the Big Knit at innocent drinks at the address below. (Dropping into the local Age UK means that all the money your hats raise will go straight to your local centre.) Otherwise, pop them in the post to us:

This issue’s restaurant review was a pre lockdown lunch at ...

Thyme Bistro at Cannon Hall You will find Thyme Bistro within the Garden Centre at Cawthorne, opposite the main Car Park for Cannon Hall. You can park in their own car park for a pound, and then have it refunded when you spend in the bistro. The seating area is light and airy thanks to the big windows, and the tables are well spaced under current COVID regulations. Outside, weather permitting, there is a very pleasant seating area which has a brook running through it. The brook, which feeds into the Cannon Hall lakes, is crossed by a couple of quaint bridges, making the rest of the site readily accessible when you leave the bistro. For lunch I ordered the Cajun Chicken Burger, and my wife ordered a Slow Cooked Pulled Ham Toasted Baguette. My Cajun Chicken was grilled to perfection, and thinking back to it now is

making my mouth water. The lightly toasted bun, along with the sour cream slaw and sweetcorn relish made it a burger to savour, and I certainly did! My burger came with a generous helping of skinny fries and a fresh salad garnish that had plenty of variety to it, definitely not the bland sort of garnish that some restaurants offer up. My wife’s Slow Cooked Pulled Ham was melt-in-the-mouth delicious. It was topped with a red onion and tomato chutney and encased in a nicely toasted fresh baguette, making for a mouth-watering eating experience. It came with the same fresh salad garnish that I had with my meal, and I gave her some of my skinny fries because there were enough for two. For our desserts we ordered the American-style Deep Caramel Cheesecake and a Homemade Fruit Scone. My cheesecake

came with a selection of summer fruit berries, a sprinkling of icing sugar and a drizzled topping. It looked so delightful that it could have graced the sweet trolley of Betty’s in Harrogate, and it tasted as good as it looked. The sumptuous cheesecake along with the fresh berries left my taste buds begging for more. My wife is a fruit scone aficionado

and takes no prisoners where scones are concerned. She was well impressed with this one. I think the superior quality strawberry jam and clotted cream sealed the deal. We finished off our meal with two Lattes. They weren’t prepared by a Barista, but they were very nice coffees to linger over. We both felt that we had an

excellent leisurely lunch in sublime surroundings at a very reasonable price. We exited the restaurant through the outside seating area and had a wander around the garden centre, where we bought two ornamental grasses for an empty spot in our garden. All in all, we spent a very pleasant couple of hours.

STRESS Older people with pets show less stress than older people without pets – perhaps because of the many ways pet responsibilities structure daily life, or perhaps because of the constancy and predictability of the companionship.

GETTING OUT Those with dogs have a built-in reason to go outdoors often.

MAKING FRIENDS While it’s hard to meet new people, dogs make terrific icebreakers.

NEW INTERESTS Dog owners might feel inspired to clean up the neighbourhood park where they walk their canine. Hospitals sometimes seek hospital-friendly pets to visit patients.

PROTECTION Even small dogs can provide security, as thieves usually avoid homes where there’s a barking dog.

TAKING CARE OF SOMETHING It’s deeply satisfying to take care of another living being, and the desire to be useful and of value never relents.

INVESTING IN LIFE Having a pet means making a promise to be involved in the pet’s life. It’s a lifeaffirming decision that requires commitment and dedication.

Keeping pets can keep you healthy The physical benefits of pet companionship for older adults include lowering blood pressure, cholesterol and heart rate. Reports also claim that a study found seniors who have pets will frequent the doctor’s office 21% less often, and show decreased signs of depression when aging. The emotional benefits are easy to understand, given surveys that reveal these behaviours of seniors who have a pet companion: • 95% talk to their pet • 82% say their pet helps when they feel sad • 71% claim their pet helps when they physically feel bad • 65% report that touching their pet makes them feel better • 57% admit they confide in their pet

a focus of attention when the house is otherwise empty, which reduces the sense of isolation.

Comfort In difficult times, many seniors report that their animal companion was a help in coping with medical treatments and recovery after injury or illness. Both dogs and cats can be keenly sensitive to their human companion’s distress and discomfort, and may snuggle in to be supportive.

Healing Powers Petting a dog “results in reduced levels of the primary stress hormone cortisol.” Overall, human-pet interaction is known to release the “anti-stress, calming hormone oxytocin in animals and humans.”

Dog-Walking

So, should you get a pet?

Recent studies reports that “a group who walked with shelter dogs improved their normal walking speed and distance” … and were “more likely to go for a walk than those who walked with a human companion. In fact, the human companions often discouraged each other from walking.” Moreover, “Dogwalking was associated with lower body mass index, fewer activities of daily living limitations, fewer doctor visits, and more frequent moderate and vigorous exercise.”

The health and wellness benefits of pets for the elderly are numerous, but before you get a new pet, prepare yourself. Are you set in your ways? Bringing a pet into the house will require you to adapt. Have you had a pet before? If so, your chances of

Heart Benefits Those with dogs and cats reduce their risk of coronary heart disease. According to studies, pet adopters often have higher heart attack survival rates, lower resting heart rates and blood pressure, smaller increases in heart rate and blood pressure in response to stress, and quicker stress recovery.

Mental Health Benefits Many older adults find themselves alone, and group dog walks help them connect with others. Plus, a pet companion becomes

a good pet companionship experience improve. Do you have disabilities? Cats or birds may be a better choice for those with physical challenges. Do you need a therapy pet? Consider an assistance- or therapy-dog. Is the pet the right age? Kittens and puppies require extra attention, but a pet who’s aging into the later stages of its life may soon develop health conditions too. Does the pet have a good temperament? The breed of the dog or cat can tell you something about its expected behaviour, but getting to know the particular animal is the best way to know how you’ll get along. Is the pet healthy? Insist on a careful and thorough veterinarian checkup. One pet or two? A pair of dogs or cats may keep each other company, but it’s important each bonds with the human first. Are finances an issue? From vet bills to sacks and cans of pet food, pets cost money.

When Phil Shore’s friends found out that he was suffering from cancer, there was only one thought in their minds, helping him in any way they possibly could. Phil is a founder and extremely popular member of the men's health group known locally as BFC Fit Reds. They are a group of men aged 35 and above who have completed a 9-week course of health and well-being and have since continued as a group to meet up and play football every Thursday evening. The group also hold events throughout the year. One such event is a yearly cycle ride from Barnsley FC’s home ground of Oakwell to York racecourse, a journey of nearly 70 miles! When another founder member of the Fit Reds, Paul Tomlinson, heard about Phil’s illness, he didn’t hesitate in suggesting that this year the bike ride should be done to help raise

funds for Phil. “Phil is one of the friendliest men I have ever come across. He’s always got a story or a joke to tell, he welcomes new members to the group like he’s known them all his life and makes everyone feel welcome,” said Paul. “We were all devastated to hear about his illness, but as a group we knew he would face it head on and with a smile on his face. He is an inspiration to us all. And so, we decided that this year’s ride to York should be done with a view to raising funds to help him in any way we could. We all welcome the challenge of the ride, but this year it had extra meaning, we were doing it for a true friend.” And so it was that around 20 for their mate Phil. men, of various cycling abilities, The grueling trip started on the from the Barnsley Fit Reds set off Trans-Pennine trail near Oakwell, from Oakwell at 9am on swiftly (in some cases) taking in Saturday 19th September, all nearby Wombwell before turning with one thing in mind, doing it

DIY Wills and What Can Go Wrong With the current national lockdown coming to an end and as we re-enter the three tier system we continue to receive an increased number of enquiries from people who want to make or update their Wills. Unfortunately the lockdown and three tier restrictions may encourage people to take a DIY approach to their Wills in order to reduce their contact with others, but this may have unintended adverse consequences. Figures from the Co-operative Legal Services (CLS) suggest that poorly drafted or ineffective DIY wills are to blame for a prolonged probate ordeal for 38,000 families a year. Most of these problems could have been avoided if legal advice was sought in the first instance.

What can go wrong? The requirements for making a valid Will are strict and as professionals we hear all too often about homemade wills which fail for simple reasons which could have been avoided if legal advice had been taken. Common problems are that the Wills are drafted too narrowly or too broadly, and therefore they do not have the desired effect. Failure to sever the tenancy on any joint property which can result in property passing by survivorship rather than through the deceased’s Will. The Will is witnessed by someone who is legally unable to do so without invalidating part or all of the Will i.e being witnessed by a beneficiary. The Will can be inadvertently drafted in a tax inefficient way, or would have been more suitable if it had incorporated a trust. These are all things that a Solicitor will

consider when advising you on the drafting and execution of your Wills.

Why use a solicitor? Solicitors are regulated by the Law Society and backed by insurance so if there is a problem with your Will the cost of fixing it should not (circumstances depending) fall to your estate to pay. Solicitors can also advise you in relation to estate planning during your lifetime, the effect Inheritance Tax may have on your estate and also consider care home fee planning. Solicitors are trained to look at the broad picture for their clients and will be able to consider other issues which you may not have thought about.

When do I need to get legal advice? You should consider amending or making a Will anytime your circumstances change significantly however, advice should always be sought in the following circumstances: • • • •

If you are co-habiting but are not married; If you are going through a divorce; If you have any business or foreign assets; If you are planning on disinheriting any of your children; • If any of the beneficiaries are vulnerable, for example if they lack capacity to deal with their finances or are minors; • If you are in a second/third/fourth marriage and you wish to protect your assets for your children from a previous marriage; • If you have assets in excess of £500,000 (or £1 million as a couple). This is not an exhaustive list and if you are in any doubt you should obtain legal advice.

DIY Wills are more expensive than you think. Whilst paying a professional to draft your Will might seem expensive, the reality is that a poorly drafted Will means that legal advice will almost certainly be required to deal with your estate when you pass away. The costs to your estate are likely to be around at least double what they would have been if the Will had been drafted in a way which fits your circumstances. Therefore, it is actually more cost effective to pay to have your Will drafted properly in your lifetime rather than leave it to your executors or beneficiaries to deal with the problems once

you have passed away. For example, paying £100 for a DIY Will and £10,000 in probate legal fees adds up to far more than a professionally drafted Will and the average £3000 in probate legal fees. It will also save your family or the people you wish to benefit a considerable amount of worry and anxiety and should make the process of administering your estate a much smoother one.
