The importance of supporting local

According to the Guardian, research on spending by local authorities shows that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business 63p stayed in the local economy, compared to 40p with a larger business. It’s Small Business Saturday on 5th December and we’re reminding readers of the importance of supporting local businesses and shops. Given the year that we’ve been through, small businesses need our support now more than ever. So please have a good look at our advertisers this month and aim to support at least one of them if you can. As Orpington’s Tangent Office Resources has demonstrated, small businesses can give the likes of Amazon a run for their money. The company recently asked its customers what they’d like to see and the results included ordering online,

next day delivery, competitive prices and one invoice – so Tangent went ahead and met all these demands. So, the next time you’re thinking about ordering from Amazon, hop over to Tangent (tangentoffice.com) or a local business and see if they can offer a similar, if not the same, product. If you’re seeking local offers and wanting to support local, why not log on to Streetpin to see what’s available? The digital platform is still in its infancy, but is growing by the week. CARBON FOOTPRINT REDUCTIONS Back in June 2019, the UK government became the first country to sign their ‘Net Zero’ target into law – marking it as the first major economy to legislate for net zero emissions. These changes have had a huge impact on the way businesses work, inspiring many to introduce new ways of reducing their carbon footprint. For example, although it’s estimated that the flights we catch account for some 12% of all transport emissions annually, there are airlines that are making significant efforts to try and reduce this figure – one of which is easyJet. In a recent report, the airline ranked top of the list of airlines trying to cut carbon emissions and has since become the first airline to operate net zero flights across its whole network. This has been possible through carbon offsetting initiatives which helps to offset the emissions the airline uses during flights. It’s estimated that the company will spend around ÂŁ25million each year carbon offsetting and lowering their impact on the environment.

FACING REDUNDANCY? "You've always got to embrace challenges in life with a smile. I am grateful for the obstacles I've faced that have shaped me into the person I am today. I look forward to the challenge that will come my way as it will help in creating the person I aspire to be. The reason why I always smile throughout difficulty in my life is because it’s an opportunity for me to grow and be a better me. So stay positive and remember that life is too short to stay sour keep it sweet when you can! "

Have you been made redundant or been told this is a possibility? THL Coaching reports that once you’ve given yourself time to get over the shock and got through the period of feeling angry or upset, you will then get to the point of acceptance. This is the point when you can start to think about what actions you can take to help you move forward. This is where you begin to take back the control - and you will feel a whole lot better for it. THL Coaching’s Tracey Latteman suggests looking at the redundancy as an opportunity. It could be an opportunity to explore a role or industry which you have always dreamed of working in; an opportunity to work for yourself maybe, or to have a portfolio career whereby you have two or more parttime jobs and possibly fit in that hobby you’ve never had time for or some volunteering you want to do but just haven’t been able to fit in. She says: “So often people go on auto-pilot and start looking for a similar role to the one they have just left. Now is the time to stand back, take stock and think - I have this opportunity – what do a REALLY want to do? Yes, there are fewer opportunities currently, but that doesn’t mean there are none! THL’s Outplacement Programme, delivered remotely, is there to help plan for a smooth and supported transition for your future.
