Welcome to Life in ORPINGTON... ...your local community magazine that has something to suit all tastes

Nicky Lauretta

It’s the festive season and although we live in very different times to this time last year (when reports of Covid-19 had just broken out), we’re still excited (and very grateful) that we can look forward to a nice Christmas meal, time spent with the family – and hopefully extended family – and some great things to watch on the telly over the Christmas period.

Whilst many local shops have been forced to close in recent times, there are still those that are struggling to stay afloat – and your support in helping local, independent businesses is very much needed.

According to Independent Retailer Month, statistics show that for every £1 spent with a local, independent business, between 50p-70p circulates back into that local economy. So if you haven’t yet done all your Christmas shopping or got in your festive supplies, please consider purchasing from local people – who do a little happy dance inside their head every time you purchase from them. We’ll leave you with some festive facts – why not use this as a basis to holding a family Christmas quiz while you’re relaxing? It might just be fun! • The word Christmas comes from the Old English "Cristes maesse" meaning "Christ's Mass". • The bestselling Xmas single ever is Bing Crosby's White Christmas, shifting over 50million copies worldwide since 1942. • US scientists calculated that Santa visits 822 homes a second to deliver all the world's presents on Christmas Eve, travelling at 650 miles a second. • The first Christmas was celebrated on December 25, AD 336 in Rome. • The image of a white Christmas is thought to have originated with the writings of Charles Dickens. During his lifetime, he grew up in a “Little Ice Age” and it snowed each Christmas for the first eight years of his life, supposedly influencing him to include it in his imagery for A Christmas Carol and other works.

Getting Orpington to know

Seasons Greetings 2009 Snow

1962 - Orpington Station

Let it snow! We thought that we would have a break from our series on local houses and focus on something festive! At the risk of repeating our article from last year, we have decided to do something different but still festive nonetheless!

2009 - Orpington Lorry stranded

When it snows in our district it is either very light and doesn’t last long or is heavy, shuts all the local services, is memorable and gets spoken about year on year! It is ten years ago this December that we had our last heavy fall. It started on the 30th November and fell several times right up until the 21st December. Maybe not the deepest that some readers may remember (1962 was extraordinary) but did take everyone by surprise and Orpington was in the national news (papers and TV).

2009 Orpington War Memorial and Tree

On the evening of the 5th and early morning of the 6th of Did you know? December, 2010, after the heaviest of the snow, a commuter 2010 and was the train full with passengers was stranded overnight at Orpington coldest December with no heating or light. This made national newspapers and for over 100 resulted in a TV news crew covering it for breakfast news the next years. day as the weary commuters were rescued! Many could not get to work that week, so what else do you do? Well, we went around taking pictures of snow scenes!

2010 - Church Hill Orpington

Snow fell again later in the month; you may remember Heathrow Airport closed for the first time ever, but although snow was on the ground on the 25th, it didn’t fall and although other parts of the country did, we didn’t officially get a white Christmas!

☹

We also had snow earlier in 2010 in January and also in 2009, February and December, but not quite as heavy and memorable as December 2010.

Star letter I’ve just read the magazine and enjoyed the history page. We were at High Elms today walking the dog and I saw the clock building and I said to my husband ‘I wonder what that’s for?’ Imagine my surprise when I popped into the Co-op at Carlton Parade, picked up a copy and there was my answer in Life In Orpington magazine! Michelle David Hooper

POETRY CORNER Beauty within by Dee Robinson Too fat, too thin, you just can't win, what am I supposed to be? Too clever, too dumb, a wobbly tum, what is it that people see? Eyes too close, or far apart or maybe my nose needs fixing? chest too small or legs too tall, so many opinions mixing. Funny teeth or ginger hair why is this an issue? Snide remarks and judgement passed till tears soak in a tissue. I believe we look just how we're meant to be, when we was born those years ago, if only we could see. See past the way society has made so many feel, see past the scars our body makes when we are left to heal. See past the lines of ageing and past the sagging skin, It covers our body, it’s beautiful; it created life within. If you want to make a change then do it for yourself, but never make the differences for the sake of someone else. Some people may not like this rhyme, Some may disagree, but I open my mind to all and in colour I can see. Do whatever makes YOU happy, Stay true to who YOU are, but most of all be decent, because that will get you far. No need to lie, steal or cheat or bully anyone, it’s hard to believe that people do, just for joy and fun. Some people say they have no choice and some are quite unwell, Others they will laugh then cry because their past was hell. I realise there’s a million stories in each individual’s eyes, and no two people are the same despite the truth or lies. I know there is no certain way; not everyone thinks like me, But one thing I am certain of is the love that there can be. I have seen too many people lie and gossip all night long, when I am in these situations, I feel I don’t belong. He said, she said, that they wanted more, but her friend said that’s she knows what they said before, And now the story’s gone around with added exaggeration And before you know it, lies are believed within a whole damn nation. I’m so done with Chinese whispers and second hand judgement passed, I don’t listen to hearsay gossip or whatever happened last. Compassionate and kind is all I want to be, because that type of beauty is all I want to see, as it comes from within and shines bright from outside, I always want to share the love and spread it far, WORLDWIDE Peace

MAYOR’S VOICE… At the time of writing we’ve just entered into another lockdown; and I sincerely hope we will be in a far better place towards the end of December and into January. I hope you’ll be celebrating Christmas in the best way possible – and I’d like to thank you all for taking the lockdown rules seriously and abiding by them. Please support one another and help keep each other safe. I’ve continued to remain busy as usual. As you might have noted from my previous column, the podcast is now up and running. You can listen to the debut recording (with Life In Magazine’s Nicky Grant) at hannahgraymeets.podbean.com or visit the Mayor Of Bromley Facebook Page for the link. I’ve been to visit a number of volunteer groups throughout the borough to thank them for the amazing work that they’ve done and hand out certificates. No doubt they will be called upon for their help again - thank you to all of them. If you know of a voluntary group that has not yet been contacted, please let us know by emailing Mayors. Office@bromley.gov.uk I have done two walkabouts this last month – in Penge and West Wickham, popping into a number of stores on the High Streets to show my support during these difficult times. Don’t forget to buy your Prize Draw ticket for the ‘Fly a Spitfire’, raising money for my two charities – Cystic Fibrosis Supporters and The Chartwell Cancer Trust. See www.givergy. uk/spitfireprizedraw. I also attended Living On Bereavement Service’s Halloween virtual quiz, which was great fun! It’s been interesting attending the virtual events for other Mayors and nice that we can support one another in this way. By the time you read this, I will have judged St Marks’ School pupil art competition (based on lockdown themes) and will have attended a Kumon event to hand out awards virtually. Along with a small number of dignitaries, I also visited Bromley War Memorial for Remembrance Sunday. A video of the wreath laying will be available on the Facebook page (Facebook.com/MayorOfBromley), along with other video messages and event photos – please do have a look and leave your comments. In other news, I enjoyed a wonderful visit to Chislehurst Caves where I took the tour and heard how the Romans, Saxons, Druids, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling

lifeinmagazines.co.uk

Stones, The Kinks and mushrooms all played their part in the multilayered history of the caves. I’d recommend a visit if you haven’t been – but do check their opening times first. Likewise, a visit to The Crofton Roman Villa in Orpington, which was only discovered relatively recently in 1926, was fascinating. It’s a great place to visit, especially with children, and so educational. A visit to Crystal Palace Park to unveil the Bob Marley plaque was also an incredible honour. I’m delighted to hear that the stage will soon be restored, and there are plans for live performances next year, Covid permitting. Meanwhile, up and coming events include a full council meeting in early December, and on 17th December I’ll be hosting a Magic and Entertainment virtual event to raise money for both my charities. Tickets are £10 and you can purchase them via the link on the Mayor of Bromley Facebook page. William Kilgannon

Last but by no means least, I had great pleasure meeting William Kilgannon to present him with the Mayor's Certificate of Commendation and Thanks. Losing his father to prostate cancer, William has campaigned tirelessly for the last seven years to raise awareness of the disease amongst men on radio, TV and online his ‘My Man of Men’ blog is a moving account of his experiences. He is a very impressive young man who has turned personal tragedy into a mission. Well done William – you set a great example to others!

Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas however you spend it this year – and here’s to 2021 being a much more positive year for us all!

community news - CHARITY WATCH Raising Awareness….

Name of charity: Bromley Mencap

What service do you provide?

We’re an award-winning, independent registered charity working with and on behalf of disabled people, their families and carers, based in the London Borough of Bromley. We were set up as a learning disability organisation in 1951 by a group of parents with children who had learning disabilities. We started to campaign at local level and later began to provide services. In 2010 we joined together with Bromley Scope and changed our constitution to become a disability organisation providing services for people with learning and/or physical disabilities (including autism and social communication difficulties). We offer a wide range of services including a day service, social and leisure opportunities for disabled children and adults, as well respite services and family support for parents and carers. We have a helpline, services for young carers and mutual carers, a children’s wellbeing service and a Short Breaks programme. We also offer employment and education support and tailored workshops, as well as training programmes at the Lodge in Norman Park for disabled adults in horticulture, bicycle maintenance, and food safety and hygiene. In addition, we run a Domiciliary Care Personal Assistant (PA) Agency that offers high quality, affordable, trained Personal Assistants/ Support Workers to provide tailored support for people with learning and/or physical disabilities. The service enables disabled people to get out and about in their local communities and access day opportunities. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, many of our usual face-to-face meetings have been suspended, but the team have adapted and been very creative in moving services online and supporting service users with this transition.

Who is it available to?

People with disabilities of any age and their families/ carers in the London Borough of Bromley. We also provide some of our services to disabled people in neighbouring boroughs.

How are you funded?

We are independent from national Mencap and do not receive any financial assistance from them. We are commissioned by the London Borough of Bromley and South East London Clinical Commissioning Group and receive grants and funding from a wide range of funders including the National lottery, BBC Children in Need and

12 Life in... Orpington December 2020

City Bridge Trust. Our Day Service and training programme is funded by Direct Payments and we also raise vital funds locally every year through a community fundraising programme.

Do you accept donations?

Yes, it is with your help that we can continue to offer our services to those that need it most. You can donate to our emergency COVID-19 fundraising appeal here http:// virginmoneygiving.com/fund/BromleyMencap_COVID-19_ Appeal or text BRMENCAPGIVE and add the amount you want to donate to 70085. For example, to donate £10 text BRMENCAPGIVE 10. Texts cost the donation amount plus one standard rate message and you’ll be opting in to hear more about our work and fundraising via telephone and SMS. If you’d like to donate but do not wish to receive marketing communications, text BRMENCAPGIVENOINFO to 70085. You could also leave us a legacy in your will. Leaving a legacy really can help protect our long-term future. We are also currently looking for donations of bicycles for our students at the Lodge undertaking bicycle maintenance training. If you can help, please contact the office on 020 8466 0790. For more information see https:// bit.ly/33kUBvi

Do you run any events?

Please keep an eye on our Facebook page (@BromleyMencap) for fundraising events. Due to COVID-19, many of our fundraising events have been cancelled which has had a huge impact on donations made, but we have been able to move some activities online.

Are you looking for volunteers?

Yes, we are always looking for fundraising volunteers and volunteers with a professional background who can support our work. We have been supported by a committed team of volunteers for many years. We welcome their contribution on either a regular or occasional basis. Volunteers are vital to the work of the charity and we offer support to anyone interested in volunteering for us.

How else can people help?

We always welcome community fundraisers to support our fundraising efforts. There are several ways you can fundraise for Bromley Mencap that won’t cost you a penny such as recycling printer toner and inkjet cartridges and shopping online with easyfundraising. Check out our website under “Getting involved” for more details. https://www.bromleymencap.org.uk/how-can-i-help/ fundraising/

Bromley Mencap are located at Rutland House, 44 Masons Hill, Bromley, BR2 9JG and they are open Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm. Call 020 8466 0790 or see www.bromleymencap.org.uk/

community news

Mark Moraghan

Mark has been gracing our screens for nearly 40 years and has appeared in many British drama series including Peak Practice, Holby City, Brookside, London's Burning, Emmerdale, Casualty and Heartbeat to name just a few. Here, Life In Orpington chats with Orpington-based Mark to get to know him better – and find out his future plans… How did you get into acting – and how easy was it? In primary school, my teacher cast me as Peter Pan and that was it, I was hooked! When I was in secondary school the BBC came and auditioned us all for a Willy Russell Play and I was given the lead. From there I joined various drama groups and my career took off - About ten years later.

MasterChef, which Michel Roux Junior and Richard Corrigan found hilarious.

What celeb friends have you got on speed dial? Nicky Campbell, Ray Winston and Lewis Emerick, plus a few from almost 40 years of working with amazing people.

What are some of the roles you’ve most enjoyed playing?

What are some of your favourite things to watch?

I enjoyed playing Mr. Briggs in ‘Our Day Out’ another Willy Russell play. At The Royal Court Liverpool. One of my favourite film roles was in a film called ‘Allies’ about a mission behind enemy lines set in and around D Day. I also enjoyed playing Dr. Owen Davis in Holby, a role I played for five years.

Do you have a favourite TV series or film?

Who do you admire in the industry? Robert DeNiro, Jack Nicolson, Gene Hackman and Tom Hardy are all amazing actors.

Any close calls? Telling Marcus Wareing where to stick his rabbit leg on

I love World War 2 films, documentaries, Narcos, The Irishman and anything by Spielberg and Scorsese. My favourite film of all time is Jaws. I loved Breaking Bad and The Sopranos.

When you’re not learning your lines, what do you get up to? I’m in the gym most days or paddle boarding. I will try and get on the water every week. My children love it as well, so it’s something we can all do together. I also love cooking and spending time with my family.

What’s your advice for someone who wants to get into acting? Get involved with local theatre groups, look at different theatre schools in your area.

What can we look forward to seeing you in next? Menorca 2019

I was touring in a play called ‘By The Waters of Liverpool’ which came to an abrupt end due to Covid. It has now been put back until September 2021. I am continuing to do Thomas The Tank Engine podcasts and I’ve been lucky enough to be able to be able to carry that on from home. I am in film called ‘Beggar My Neighbour’ in which I play a ruthless underworld fixer for the big banks.

Any other upcoming projects? Only general DIY around the house and honing my cookery skills!

What do you like about Life In Orpington magazine? Paddle boarding in lockdown at Bewl Water

lifeinmagazines.co.uk

It’s great to see what is going on in the local area and good for finding local businesses.

What do you most enjoy about living in the borough? The location is great for central London, the Kent Countryside on our doorstep and the coast not too far away. We have amazing neighbours and there’s a real sense of community in our part of Bromley.

The importance of supporting local

According to the Guardian, research on spending by local authorities shows that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business 63p stayed in the local economy, compared to 40p with a larger business. It’s Small Business Saturday on 5th December and we’re reminding readers of the importance of supporting local businesses and shops. Given the year that we’ve been through, small businesses need our support now more than ever. So please have a good look at our advertisers this month and aim to support at least one of them if you can. As Orpington’s Tangent Office Resources has demonstrated, small businesses can give the likes of Amazon a run for their money. The company recently asked its customers what they’d like to see and the results included ordering online,

WILLY WONKA'S WISE WORDS

next day delivery, competitive prices and one invoice – so Tangent went ahead and met all these demands. So, the next time you’re thinking about ordering from Amazon, hop over to Tangent (tangentoffice.com) or a local business and see if they can offer a similar, if not the same, product. If you’re seeking local offers and wanting to support local, why not log on to Streetpin to see what’s available? The digital platform is still in its infancy, but is growing by the week. Watch this video to see how it all works: https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=7J82wW5CFhU In celebration of #SmallBusinessSaturday, we’d love to see your Small Business purchases! Send a picture to hello@ lifeinmagazines.co.uk and where you bought it from!

CARBON FOOTPRINT REDUCTIONS Back in June 2019, the UK government became the first country to sign their ‘Net Zero’ target into law – marking it as the first major economy to legislate for net zero emissions. These changes have had a huge impact on the way businesses work, inspiring many to introduce new ways of reducing their carbon footprint. For example, although it’s estimated that the flights we catch account for some 12% of all transport emissions annually, there are airlines that are making significant efforts to try and reduce this figure – one of which is easyJet. In a recent report, the airline ranked top of the list of airlines trying to cut carbon emissions and has since become the first airline to operate net zero flights across its whole network. This has been possible through carbon offsetting initiatives which helps to offset the emissions the airline uses during flights. It’s estimated that the company will spend around ÂŁ25million each year carbon offsetting and lowering their impact on the environment.

FACING REDUNDANCY? "You've always got to embrace challenges in life with a smile. I am grateful for the obstacles I've faced that have shaped me into the person I am today. I look forward to the challenge that will come my way as it will help in creating the person I aspire to be. The reason why I always smile throughout difficulty in my life is because it’s an opportunity for me to grow and be a better me. So stay positive and remember that life is too short to stay sour keep it sweet when you can! "

Have you been made redundant or been told this is a possibility? THL Coaching reports that once you’ve given yourself time to get over the shock and got through the period of feeling angry or upset, you will then get to the point of acceptance. This is the point when you can start to think about what actions you can take to help you move forward. This is where you begin to take back the control - and you will feel a whole lot better for it. THL Coaching’s Tracey Latteman suggests looking at the redundancy as an opportunity. It could be an opportunity to explore a role or industry which you have always dreamed of working in; an opportunity to work for yourself maybe, or to have a portfolio career whereby you have two or more parttime jobs and possibly fit in that hobby you’ve never had time for or some volunteering you want to do but just haven’t been able to fit in. She says: “So often people go on auto-pilot and start looking for a similar role to the one they have just left. Now is the time to stand back, take stock and think - I have this opportunity – what do a REALLY want to do? Yes, there are fewer opportunities currently, but that doesn’t mean there are none! THL’s Outplacement Programme, delivered remotely, is there to help plan for a smooth and supported transition for your future. My name is Michelle, and I am passionate about what I do. I work locally as a Celebrant, in and around Orpington. Having been an Orpington resident for most of my life, I feel it is important to work closely with the community that I live in, and as a result of that, I have also co-founded The Bereavement Café in Orpington. So, my role as a Celebrant is to work with families who have lost a loved one and help them create a unique and fitting ceremony, to help them say goodbye. But I have also introduced something called, “Remember Me” and that is to help people document their wishes before they die. This is a really simple way of instructing your loved ones with what you want, when that time comes. We can discuss everything from music choices, your life story, colours, themes, and have it all recorded safely, so that when the time comes your family members aren’t left scratching their heads trying to work out what you would have wanted.

Tips for a sustainable Christmas

Use recyclable wrapping paper: You can check if your wrapping paper is recyclable by doing ‘the scrunch test’ - simply scrunch a piece of the paper in the palm of your hand - if the paper remains ‘scrunched’ it is paper- based and widely recycled in the UK. If the wrapping paper unfolds or springs back it cannot be recycled. Turn last year’s Christmas cards into this year’s present labels - and recycle them afterwards! Don’t be afraid to give second-hand presents - a book you really loved reading, or a charity shop toy. Reuse cardboard delivery boxes to wrap larger presents, along with some ribbon for a festive touch you can recycle the cardboard boxes and reuse the ribbon afterwards, too. Decorate your space with natural foliage, plus

choose a real Christmas tree - they have less of a carbon footprint compared to a fake one. You would have to reuse your artificial tree for 12 years to make it greener than a real tree. Reuse Christmas decorations year after year - and only buy a couple of new ones to replace any that are broken. Reduce food waste by finding creative ways of using up your Christmas Turkey. It tastes great as a curry, in a pie or even as part of a stir-fry. Set your Christmas lights up through a timer switch so they only come on as it gets dark outside and don’t run throughout the night. This will not only cut down on energy usage but also help save £s off your energy bill! Karen Maurice, N4Mummy

Supporting people with dementia at Christmas Christmas is traditionally the family time of the year. But the festive season can also feel confusing and overwhelming for people living with dementia. Here are some simple tips to help everyone feel part of the activities and enjoy the festivities…. Involve all family members to do their bit Chat to family members and friends beforehand and make sure you give everyone specific responsibilities where they can contribute. People with dementia can assist with domestic tasks or meal preparation, and it will give them a sense of purpose. Working together will enable the whole family to work together and create some meaningful connections.

Help remember happy times If your loved one with dementia is religious, a church visit may be a good idea. Other activities that will recreate the happy time from their childhood, youth, activities they may have done as children or parents, may all provide fond memories and be very soothing.

Cater for everyone’s appetite Dementia can affect a person’s appetite and they may not want to eat a huge dinner. Give them smaller portions so they don’t feel embarrassed if they can’t eat it all - you can offer second helpings if they are still hungry.

Find a quiet spot Excessive noise can disorientate and possibly evoke feelings of insecurity, so be mindful when playing games and music. Find a quieter place they can sit, whilst still being part of the family and encourage other family members to spend 1:1 time with them.

Remembering names Make sure you introduce and re-introduce family and friends visiting so they are not embarrassed by not remembering names of grandchildren or relatives. You can even make a game of it, so they don’t feel intimidated.

10 THINGS TO REMEMBER ON CHRISTMAS DAY MORNING 1. Prepare all the veg 2. Heat up the oven early 3. Lay the table 4. Remember the pigs in blankets 5. Remember all the sauces - cranberry, bread sauce etc 6. Whiz the hoover round after opening presents 7. Thank relatives for presents (why not Facetime them?) 8. Retrieve hidden presents for young children to put out 9. Slice up lemons / limes for drinks & find the crackers 10. Look around, smile and really take in the moment. Thistle.com

What your sleeping position says about you How do you sleep at night? Most of us adopt a preferred position to fall asleep, but did you know that it says a lot about the person you are. The Bed Post explains it all…

FETUS: The fetal position is the most popular position with a 41% preference. The ball-like position, with the legs pulled up to the chest, may alleviate snoring and is ideal for pregnant women. Those who adopt this position are said to have a tough exterior, but are very shy, and may take some time to warm up, but will eventually relax.

down by your sides, this position reflects is adopted by individuals that are typically easy going and reserved. It is one of the most recommended positions by experts because it helps with acid reflux and prevents wrinkle, because nothing is pressed against the face. It’s also a great position for helping keep the back and neck aligned.

LOG: This position is characterised by a person lying straight on their side with arms straight down by their sides. People who choose to fall asleep in this position are typically social and easy going. They are perhaps a little too trusting and therefore easily deceived.

FREE-FALLER: Sleeping flat on the stomach with arms outstretched – either above the head or wrapped around a pillow – is usually adopted by those who are extroverted, outgoing and tend to take criticism poorly. It’s not a great position for the neck or back, but it can help alleviate snoring and aid digestion.

YEARNER: This position is where you lay on your side with both arms stretched in front of you. ‘Yeraners’ are perceived as open and social, but are typically suspicious. They also tend to take a long time to make decisions. SOLDIER: Flat on your back, with both arms straight

Shaken, not stirred...

There’s a new shake on the market that’s dairy-free and 100% plant-based. It’s called Shaken Other and is ideal for flexitarians, those unable to drink dairy or anyone wanting to try something different. It’s made using ethicallysourced coconut milk and has no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. Available in two flavours, Chocolate and Strawberry, the creamy shakes are available at Tesco and Sainsbury’s and cost £1.60 for 330ml. See visit www.shakenother.co.uk

STARFISH: This flat on the back position, with arms above the head, is worst for those who snore or who have breathing difficulties, despite it being a favoured position. These sleepers make good friends as they’re always prepared to listen.

A Final Thought…

Poetry for pleasure by JERRY DOWLEN

It has been said that many people turn to poetry at times of celebration or grief. There is ample evidence of this: verse is often printed inside birthday and Christmas cards or is recited at weddings and funerals. You may remember how W.H. Auden’s poem ‘Stop all the clocks’ reached a large audience of cinemagoers when featured in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral in 1994. Here in Orpington, our Croft Poetry Club, founded in 2014, has more than 30 members who enjoy writing, reading, reciting and discussing poetry. Currently during the lockdown, club activity is restricted to fortnightly meetings online via Zoom, but it certainly hasn’t stopped the creative flow of new poems that reflect upon the coronavirus and its dramatic effect upon our lives. From its base at the Croft Tea Room, St Mary Cray, the Croft Poetry Club has engaged with the local community since opening. Members were invited during 2014 to recite war poetry at church and civic events marking the centenary of the 1914-1918 conflict. Doubra Fufeyin read her poem The Lost Ones to a packed congregation, including our local MP and the Deputy Mayor, at All Saints Church Orpington on the Remembrance Sunday. In subsequent years we have added many public recitals and accomplishments to our name, including a filmed appearance on ITV News London in 2018. Our outreach venues have included branch libraries, churches, village halls and rest homes, while our range of recited poetry has expanded across the centuries - from Shakespeare and William Wordsworth, to Pam Ayers, Carol Ann Duffy and Roger McGough. One of our best received series of recitals was the poetry of Mary Wilson, wife of the former Prime Minister, to mark her death in 2018 at the age of 102. Our club has a local origin; we were founded in tribute to the Bromley poet and pacifist Donald Ward (1909-2003). Our book, Dove on the Wing (2013), featured the life and work of a nature-loving conservationist whose poems described the area of Chelsfield where he lived, and the adjoining countryside of Cudham, Darenth, High Elms and other localities. What is the appeal of poetry – to the reader or to the writer? I already know that readers of Life in Orpington enjoy dabbling in poetry because I have seen some lovely poems of yours in recent issues. My advice is: don’t be shy - have a try! You might be motivated to write about something topical; an incident in your life; a place you have visited; something glad … something sad. Express it in rhythm and rhyme, and there is your poem! Send your completed poems to the editor of Life in Orpington because I know that she will welcome receiving them and she will publish the best ones.

His parents were on bended knee, unwrapping presents for him to see, holding them up one by one,

to their somewhat bewildered son. There were toys all shining and new, but their baby didn’t have a clue; he just sat there with a happy grin, preferring paper they’d been wrapped in! Geraldine Ann Ford
