Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers August 2015 Dear Lake Grapevine, We have a little relief from our all­road course because Dove Road is finally open. We can now walk and run about half a mile on our familiar park trail route. We also have water and Gatorade at our usual first water stop on Dove Road, now about 1 1/2 miles into the course, as well as at W. Kimball Ave. and Lakeview Dr., just before the 3­mile mark. Most importantly, the road in front of the clubhouse is open, so we can park at our normal locations, across the street for early birds and at the softball field lot.

There is a new LGRAW Board of Directors with a lot of great new ideas for the club. Learn more at the "Meet the RAW Board" Happy Hour and Board Meeting on August 10. We would like to thank the outgoing board members for their service to the club over the past years, including Diane Ferguson, Stan Pollard, Sakina Vidacak and Mike Eccleston, and last but not the least President Joe Luccioni. We finally got word that our race permit for Double Trouble 5K and 10K has been approved for Saturday, October 24, 2015.

Registration opened on Sunday, July 25, and we already have a great start on registrations for the race. More information on Double Trouble is here. By the way, if you have considered directing a club race but didn't know if you could handle it, check out the story below.

David Ball has contributed a moving story in this issue about Sharonda Singleton, the reverend who was killed in Charleston, S.C. He tells us about her lesser­known connection to running and what we can do to help.

If you would like some help getting ready for a 5K, try our Couch to 5K training program. For the price of the 5K race, you can participate in weekly workouts and receive a specialized training plan from our RRCA­certified coaches. Weekly training sessions begin in mid­ September.

Reaching out to the running community when tragedy strikes David Ball

Dear RAW family,

Recently we've heard in the media that "every life matters." Funny how that could be controversial, but I believe it. I also believe some people spend their lives improving the lives of others, making them special, as in the case of Sharonda Singleton, extra special.

Up until a few weeks ago, Sharonda was the girls track coach at a very modest high school, making a huge impact on her athletes far beyond sprints, hurdles and field events. For eight years, she made such a difference. She combined discipline with love to shape character, energized the girls' belief in themselves, and demanded excellence in every aspect of their lives. Her team excelled in every way, and the girls loved her as coach, mentor and second mom. Coach Sharonda was a model for every reason running and athletics has value in young lives in setting a positive course for a lifetime.

I never met Sharonda, nor will I ever. In June, she was one of nine victims killed in Charleston, South Carolina, by a lone racist gunman while attending a Bible study where she was also a Reverend.

So moved by what I read about this amazing woman, I called Goose Creek High School and spoke for several hours with the principal Jimmy Huskey and boys track coach, Joe Hauff. Huskey said, "Sharonda was so much more than a coach, she taught the girls about life and how to be upstanding young women. She cared about them and was an advocate who was always willing to listen and talk to them and always there with a smile." Joe Hauff shared similar heartwarming stories.

Equally amazing is that Charleston did NOT go to darkness, violence and chaos in the aftermath. No racial violence backlash has occurred in Charleston despite their heavy loss. Instead, the citizens of Charleston have shown amazing character and poise by choosing love and faith to embrace each other in their grief. Sharonda's three children spoke about their mother with dignity and poise following this awful crime at large public gatherings.

Goose Creek High School would like to hold an annual district track and field event in Sharonda's name and honor but are faced with some significant financial barriers with their field equipment and inadequate timing system. I have

volunteered to assist them in any way, including designing a commemorative logo for the event. I am also involved behind the scenes with fundraising and generating public attention to this event. If anyone in the RAW family would like to help with a contribution or other assistance, I am setting up a way to do this. Details to come.

Join me, in showing how compassionate and generous RAW members are, in reaching out to Goose Creek High School all the way from Texas. Couch to 5K Coaches Needed We are planning to offer our Couch to 5K program again this year as a part of the Double Trouble 5K/10K in October. The C25K program will begin about six weeks prior to the race, meeting once a week for group workouts. It is a great way to help motivate and train new and prospective runners, so that they are ready for their first 5K race.

Race Director Assistants

Would you like to direct a race but not sure about taking the leap?

If you have thought about volunteering to be a race director but are concerned that it's too hard or might take too much time, then worry no more and reconsider because now is your chance! The race director for Double Trouble and Bold in the Cold (both Chris Morris) has generously offered to mentor prospective race directors on what is required to put on a RAW race. You will have the opportunity to shadow the race director and assist throughout the race planning and execution process, so that you will feel comfortable and ready to take the reins the next time.

The race director is responsible for creating a race budget, choosing giveaways and prizes, enlisting sponsors, administering race sign­ups and promoting the race. The race director may delegate many of these tasks to others, but is ultimately responsible for the successful execution of the race. Our RAW­some and experienced volunteers are a great asset in making sure things go off according to plan.

If you would prefer more formalized training in preparation for being a race director in the future, you can enroll in Road Runners Club of America's Race Director Certification Course. Partial scholarships may be available from LGRAW, if you commit to directing a race after completing the course.

RRCA RunPro camp helps athletes start their running career

In April of this year, I was elected to the RRCA Board of Directors for my fourth and final term as an At­Large Director. Every board meeting I have participated in has been very productive but more is accomplished in some than others, and our July meeting held in Arlington, VA, was one of those meetings. Tasked with reviewing and revising the mission statement, vision and values of the organization, as necessary, the Board collaboratively updated and approved the following:

The RRCA Values: *All runners and their safety *Diversity in the sport and an enjoyable atmosphere for all *Anti­doping compliance *Positive relations with members, volunteers, donors, and sponsors *Best practices in organizational governance and management The day after the Board Meeting, the 4th RunPro Camp started. RunPro Camp is designed for athletes interested in pursuing a professional distance running career. Selection to the camp for the 12 athletes chosen was based on an application process, with most athletes being NCAA qualifiers and competing in distances ranging from the 800 meters up to the 10,000 meters as well as in Cross Country. The interactive camp provided opportunities for the dozen up­and­comers to meet coaches and athletes from professional training centers, learn about shoe company requirements for sponsorship, determine what type of representation (agents) would be best, find out about elite race recruitment and how to seek both financial and health support, along with various USATF rules governing professional running including anti­doping compliance.

Speakers included 2014 U.S. Marathon Champion Tyler Pennel, Sports Agent Merhawi Keflezighi, Pat Goodwin of Team USA Minnesota, the highly energetic and entertaining Ben Rosario of Northern Arizona Elite and numerous others. I learned a lot myself but was most surprised to learn that runners have to seek out training centers, and that the centers do not recruit athletes, and The RRCA Board Runs the Nation's Capital. that the annual incremental cost to be an elite runner is $16,000 a year, while 50% of Track & Field athletes ranked in the top 10 in the US in their event make less than $15,000 per year from the sport. It really opened my eyes to the importance of sponsorship.

Upcoming RRCA Program Events: The 10th Annual RRCA RUN@WORK Day and 4th Annual RUN@School Day is September 18. The goal of RUN@WORK and RUN@School Day is to encourage adults and children to get 30 minutes of exercise each day, in accordance with the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, either before work/school, during lunch, or

immediately following work/school. The RRCA provides a planning kit and promotional materials for both events.

The 58th Annual RRCA National Convention will be held on March 17­19, 2016. The convention is right here in Dallas and hosted by the Dallas Running Club. .
