EASTER FESTIVAL 2024
MAP OF ENCLOSURE
On Behalf of the team at Fairyhouse I would like to welcome you to the second day of the 2024 Easter Festival.
The Grade 1 WillowWarm Gold Cup which is traditionally one of the highlights for the novice chasing division looks like being another great renewal. This race has a long tradition of producing top class winners from Arkle to Gallopin Des Champs. We are delighted to have local company WillowWarm on board as sponsors of the race, as they help Ireland transition to renewable heat by providing sustainable, efficient, economic products and last year we could not have had a more appropriately named winner than Flame Bearer.
The Grade 1 Irish Stallion Farms Honeysuckle Mares Hurdle is the feature Mares Novice Hurdle of the year and this year’s race looks again like it will be very informative. It is thanks to foresight of the EBF and HRI that the mares jumps programme has developed over the last number of years and has encouraged the rise in the number of mares in training and Honeysuckle is the poster girl for their foresight and we look forward to hearing of her upcoming arrival.
Kenny Alexandar has kindly donated a Honeysuckle bronze by Emma McDermott to Fairyhouse for permanent display in our newly refurbished Tattersalls Owners Lounge. This will be presented to the winning owner each year of the Honeysuckle Novice Hurdle. The bronze celebrates the great successes Honeysuckle had at Fairyhouse where she won three Bar One Racing Hatton’s Grace Hurdles, Grade 1 EBF Mares Novice Hurdle, Grade 3 Solerina Hurdle, a conditions hurdle and her maiden hurdle success. We are delighted to have the bronze as a permanent reminder of the great mare and we would like to thank Kenny, Peter and Henry for entrusting us with the bronze.
The €100,000 Tattersalls Ireland Sales Race features some of the leading 4 year olds in training and they have followed the path of numerous stars from the sales ring across the road to success here on the track. This race has been won by horses such as Moon Racer and Dark Raven and of course the mighty Honeysuckle came from the Derby Sales ring to multiple Fairyhouse Racecourse successes. Last year’s winner Brighterdaysahead was the sales topper from the 2022 sale and has since progressed to pattern success over hurdles and is one of this seasons leading novice mares. We wish Tattersalls continued success as they celebrate their 50th Derby Sale this year.
I would like to thank all our other sponsors today – Ryans Cleaning, Cawley Furniture, Donohue Marquees, BoyleSports and Paddy Kehoe Suspended Ceilings.
There is plenty of children’s entertainment here today in the Final Fence Marquee, located beside the open stand where you will also find the La Bucca Easter Bonnet competition. We are delighted to have cartoonist Birdie here today and tomorrow and he will be giving a masterclass in the children’s marquee.
I would like to thank all our staff and contractors who have contributed to the success of this meeting as without them there would simply be no meeting. So from the permanent Fairyhouse team to the casual workers who help us for the festival, operations to office staff, caterers to medical staff, CCTV to cleaners, HRI to IHRB, we thank you so much. This year has been particularly testing for our track team with one of the wettest winters on record and their work is often unappreciated.
I wish you all an enjoyable day today and hope you can come back here tomorrow for the BoyleSports Irish Grand National which will take place at 5.00pm with the first race off at 2.05pm.

RACE VERDICT
More than one possible explanation emerged after RATH GAUL BOY flopped at Leopardstown and he can probably make amends in an ordinary maiden. Cobra Queen, whose stablemate Pen To Paper disappointed on debut, may prove best of the others with hurdles form. Omniscient merits respect on his best Flat form, but he may find the ground too testing and his form last year was not up to scratch. [Alan Sweetman] Source: Racing Post

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race.
The horses’ welfare is always our priority.
The Association of Irish Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (AIRCVS)
NOTICES
In the event of a Garda Siochana order to evacuate the stands and the enclosures, the following procedures will be adopted:

Customers should proceed in an orderly fashion, through the EXITS to the ASSEMBLY POINTS on the RACETRACK/CAR PARK, and remain there until the ALL CLEAR has been given.

A very open look to this novice handicap. Several lightly raced unexposed types here, notably Banprionsa, Our Boy Rocky and Pax, while the experienced bottom-weight Chosen Diamond remains on a reasonable mark. FITTING THAT HONEYSUCKLE’S NAME SHOULD ADORN THIS MARES’ FEATURE
The brilliant Annie Power set a high standard when winning the Mares’ Novice Hurdle at the Easter meeting in 2013, the first year it had Grade 1 status. Several topclass mares have triumphed in the interim, though one stands out, the 2019 winner Honeysuckle, whose name is now fittingly attached to the event.
During an honour-laden 19-race career, Honeysuckle, twice winner of the Champion Hurdle and unbeaten in four Cheltenham Festival appearances, visited Fairyhouse more frequently than anywhere else, winning seven of her eight races at the track, the first in a maiden hurdle in November 2018, ridden by her career-long partner Rachael Blackmore.
In the calendar year 2019, the Henry de Bromheadtrained mare ran in only four races, all at Fairyhouse, culminating in the first of three wins in the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle. When attempting to win that race for a
fourth time in November 2022, she suffered the first defeat of her career, finishing third behind the Gordon Elliott-trained Teahupoo.
Annie Power’s trainer Willie Mullins has saddled six winners of the event in its Grade 1 era, including the two most recent. Brandy Love trounced the British-trained Love Envoi in 2022 and Ashroe Diamond came home five lengths clear of Jarlath Fahey’s gallant outsider Whatcouldhavebeen last season.
Paul Townend, who has ridden the last two winners, has shared in four of the Mullins successes, having also partnered Adriana Des Mottes in 2014 and Laurina in 2018.

SELECTION: JADE DE GRUGY
Willie Mullins throws the kitchen sink at this and Paul Townend’s mount JADE DE GRUGY is probably the right one despite a seemingly below-best Cheltenham run. Jetara ran a fine race against geldings at Leopardstown and should be in the mix, Bioluminiscence can continue to improve, and several of the less exposed Closutton runners could rise to the occasion, including Cute Des As and Spindlberry. A race which the Willie Mullins’ yard has dominated in recent years and holds a very strong hand here. Both Mirazur West and Western Diego are keen-goers, the latter will be well suited by a strongly-run race here. However, French flat recruit TOUNSIVATOR could have too much pace for the pair of them judged on an impressive recent hurdles debut. Angostura goes well on the ground and is respected. Happy Birthday to Pascal Flynn celebrating his 60th Birthday today, hope you enjoy your day!
In 2023 WillowWarm took over the sponsorship of this historic novice chase, one of the most important races in the Irish jumps calendar since its inauguration as the Powers Gold Cup in 1960.
With new sponsorship came another layer of history. In saddling Flame Bearer to beat five stablemates in a race with no other finishers, Willie Mullins achieved a fifth consecutive win in the Grade 1 contest. That put him equal with Jim Dreaper, who recently handed over the licence at the famous Greenogue yard to his son Tom, as the event’s most successful trainer.
Dreaper’s five wins came between 1973 and 1994, following four for his father Tom, the first in 1963 with the mighty Arkle. Fort Leney, another subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, followed suit in 1964.
Arkle’s rider Pat Taaffe triumphed as a trainer with the great Captain Christy in 1974, the season in which he won the Cheltenham Gold Cup as a novice. It took another 45 years for the Willie Mullins-trained Al Boum Photo to go into the record books of both races.
Mullins repeated the feat with the brilliant Galopin Des Champs. Two years ago the future dual Gold Cup hero
A GRADE 1 THAT HAS BEEN GRACED BY JUMP RACING’S GREATEST CHAMPIONS
arrived at Fairyhouse seeking compensation after a mishap at Cheltenham when exiting at the final fence in the Turners Novices’ Chase with the race at his mercy. Sent off the 2-11 favourite in a field of four, he won by eighteen lengths.
Last year’s event was sadly marred by the fatal injury suffered by the talented Mighty Potter when falling at the tenth fence. Ridden by Sean O’Keefe, Flame Bearer made almost all to beat his shorter-priced stablemates Sir Gerhard and Appreciate It.
