I would like to welcome you here today for the 2024 BoyleSports Irish Grand National, which marks the 10th year of BoyleSports sponsorship of the race.

This year’s race is again worth €500,000 making it the most valuable jumps race run in Ireland and we have been rewarded with another quality field for today’s race. Last year ‘I am Maximus’ scored under one of the greatest Grand National rides from Paul Townend to win for JP McManus and Willie Mullins. The horse has since completed a unique treble by adding the Grade 1 Drinmore Chase and Grade 3 Bobbyjo Chase & so became the first horse to win the three biggest chase races in Fairyhouse in the same year. This race has developed over the years thanks to the support of the team at BoyleSports and I would like to thank John Boyle for his continued commitment to Irish racing as they recently signed a new sponsorship agreement covering the Irish Grand National and other races in HRI Racecourses.

This year has been particularly testing for our track team with one of the wettest winters on record and their work is often unappreciated.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish our Committee member Nina Carberry the best of luck in her bid to gain her seat for the European parliament in June. Nina has been a great ambassador for Irish racing and Fairyhouse and we wish her well in her bid for election.

MEDICAL CENTRE:

Situated at the end of the parade ring close to the saddling stalls.

WHEELCHAIR ACCESS:

All areas within our two Stands are wheelchair accessible by lifts in both stands. There are also a number of Disabled Viewing areas within the stands and beside the parade ring and new viewing area at the Open Stand. Disabled toilets are located on the ground floor of both the Grand National and Ballyhack Stands. Should any patrons be unsure of how to access any areas, please ask a member of Fairyhouse Staff or contact the Racecourse Office and we will gladly escort you.

BABY CHANGING FACILITIES:

There is a baby changing and baby feeding room on the ground floor of the Grand National Stand beside the lift.

ATM:

ATM is located outside the Main Office as you enter the Enclosure

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race.

The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

TRAINER JIM DREAPER CALLS TIME ON 52-YEAR

TRAINING CAREER

Dreaper. That seven-lettered surname is as synonymous with Irish racing as any other and now there is a new one in town as Thomas has taken over the licence from his legendary father Jim since the start of March.

It was back in 1972 when a fresh-faced Jim, just 20 years young at the time, was handed the keys to the kingdom by his father Tom and he was crowned champion trainer in each of his first five seasons in charge.

Tom, of course, had trained legends like Arkle, Fortria and Flyingbolt, but Jim was quick to make his own name for himself and the first winner under his own name arrived in January of 1972 when Straight Fort won the Express Chase at Sandown. A month later Jim sent over Good Review to become the first Irish-trained winner of the Schweppes Gold Trophy.

Fairyhouse was Dreaper’s favourite playground. It was his local track and he trained the winner of the Irish Grand National on no fewer than four occasions thanks to Colebridge (1974) and, of course, the brilliant Brown Lad who completed a hat-trick of wins in Ireland’s most famous jumps race in 1975, 1976, 1978.

The third win was achieved as a 12-year-old and this year Any Second Now will bid to become the oldest horse since Brown Lad to win the Irish Grand National in 46 years.

Speaking of Brown Lad, he was part of Dreaper’s annus mirabilis in 1975. He won the Stayers’ Hurdle and was part of a memorable week for the stable as Ten Up famously landed the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Lough Inagh won the Champion Chase. A miraculous achievement.

Carvill’s Hill was undoubtedly one of the most talented thoroughbreds to ever pass through Dreaper’s hands, while Merry Gale won 18 times.

In more recent times, Notre Pere was the star of the show. He was a superb winner of the Welsh National at Chepstow in 2008 under Andrew Lunch before going on to win the Punchestown Gold Cup at Grade 1 level by a dozen lengths later in the season.

Another horse who threatened to become a superstar was Harcon. He giant chestnut won his first four chases by a combined total of 71 lengths. He had Sound Man 12 lengths behind him in a Grade 3 novice chase at Punchestown the month before the 1995 Cheltenham Festival.

The 1995 Sun Alliance Chase was billed as a straight shootout between Ireland and Britain - Harcon v Banjo from the Martin Pipe stable - and Dreaper’s big white hope was sent off 6-4 favourite under Kevin O’Brien.

Brief Gale and Phillip Hide spoiled the party, though, and went on to beat Harcon by nine lengths.

It may be Thomas’ name on the licence now, but Jim is going nowhere and will continue to play a pivotal role in the operation.

When asked why he has handed over the reins, Dreaper said: “Nothing particularly sparked the decision to change over the licence as we’ve been talking about it for a few years. I’m 52 years at it now and basically nothing in the short-term is going to change bar the initials on the racecard.

“I definitely have no ambition to retire. I’m not looking forward to the day when I don’t want to go out to the yard and I’ll be still contributing as much as I’m allowed.”

When asked for his most enduring memory, Dreaper replied: “I would say Ten Up winning the Gold Cup. Brown Lad won three Irish Nationals and won off top weight, but it’s a handicap and the Gold Cup is the Gold Cup.”

How fitting that Telenor was Dreaper’s final graded winner when he dead-heated with Uimhiraceathair in the 2010 Ten Up Novice Chase, a race named after his Gold Cup hero. Jim’s last winner with his name on the licence was Lar’s Lass at Punchestown on February 5.

It is over to Thomas now to start making a name for himself and the early signs are positive as Folly Master has already got him off the mark, winning a beginners chase at Thurles just five days after being handed the licence.

The Dreaper name is going nowhere.

TOWNEND SECURES A LANDMARK FIRST IRISH GRAND NATIONAL WITH DETERMINED RIDE ON I AM MAXIMUS

Stamina was the key requirement for the runners in the 2023 BoyleSports Irish Grand National. Contested on ground officially described as soft, the race became a slog. Only six of the 27 starters completed the historic three miles and five furlongs course.

For much of the first circuit the eventual winner I Am Maximus appeared to be making heavy weather of it. At times, he made things difficult for jockey Paul Townend by jumping to the left and racing lazily.

Owner JP McManus later confided it had crossed his mind that Townend might have been better advised to pull up the seven-year-old novice, who was having only his fifth race over fences and competing in a handicap for the first time. Ultimately, a delighted McManus and trainer Willie Mullins were full of praise for Townend’s perseverance.

I Am Maximus started to improve his position before the third-last of the 24 fences, and his stamina came into play as the race entered its closing stages. Townend switched him to the right after jumping the last and he picked up well to overhaul the Gordon Elliott-trained Gevrey. Elliott also took third place with Defi Bleu, and the winner’s stablemate Dolcita was fourth.

A French-bred gelding by Authorized, I Am Maximus was a second Irish Grand National winner for Mullins following Burrows Saint four years previously. It was a landmark first for Townend, and it was apt for a rider of the champion jockey’s calibre to achieve the feat with such a wonderfully dynamic and determined ride.

I Am Maximus returned to Fairyhouse in December and exploited the anomaly of his continued novice status to secure the Drinmore Chase. Since then he has staked a claim as a contender for the Randox Grand National with victory in the Bobbyjo Chase at the venue in February. His future might still be bright but his epic Fairyhouse exploits will be hard to top.

BOYLESPORTS IRISH GRAND NATIONAL PREVIEW

Will we see a second BoyleSports Irish Grand National win for Gordon Elliott? He triumphed with General Principle in 2018 and has seven of the 21 runners. Jack Kennedy partners Punchestown’s Grand National Trial winner Where It All Began.

Or perhaps a third win for Willie Mullins? The champion trainer had a long wait before scoring with Burrows Saint in 2019. Last season he did it again with I Am Maximus. He has three contenders with last year’s winning rider Paul Townend on the well-fancied Nick Rockett.

Two County Meath trainers bid to win the race for a second time. Tom Gibney, who sent out shock 2012 winner Lios Na Bearnai, has a fighting chance with French import Intense Raffles who has won both novice starts at the venue for owner-breeders Simon Munir and Isaac Souede.

Tony Martin, responsible for the 2001 winner David’s Lad, has a noteworthy runner in Good Time Jonny, a Cheltenham Festival winner last season in the Pertemps Final. He struggled when third behind Intense Raffles at the venue in February but could be a different proposition in handicap company.

Ted Walsh and Martin Brassil enjoyed success in the big race in the early years of the century. Brassil has the Kerry National winner Desertmore House in the field, and Walsh runs Any Second Now, twice placed in the Grand National at Aintree. He would be the first 12-yearold to win the race since Brown Lad in 1978.

And suppose a new name is added to the roll of honour. In that case, the betting market suggests that the most likely candidates are Gavin Cromwell, who runs Hartur D’Arc and Yeah Man, Henry de Bromhead with Rachael Blackmore’s mount Senior Chief, or Karl Thornton with Where’s Frankie who appeals as a four-time course winner.

Horses which receive a published weight of 9st 13lbs or less will be entitled to a 50% reduction in entry fee.
