On behalf of the team at Fairyhouse Racecourse I would like to welcome you to the first day of the Easter Festival 2024.

I would like to thank all our sponsors today – RYBO, Irish Stallion Farms EBF, Race Displays, Low.ie, TQ Electrical and BoyleSports.

Today we are staging the seventh running of the Ladies National and this year it is being run for the first time in the memory of Fred Kenny. For the last number of years, the race has been run to acknowledge the work of Dr Kenny but unfortunately he passed away in January of this year surrounded by his wonderful family. Fred played a central role in bringing many of the jockeys back to race riding following injury & was seen by many as their first port of call following a fall. We are delighted to welcome his family, friends and the weigh room fraternity to celebrate his wonderful life at his beloved Fairyhouse.

I would like to especially welcome the friends of the Dublin Neurological Institute, Mater Hospital to Fairyhouse today. This group will raise much needed funds and awareness for their charity and thanks to the leadership of Michael Ryan for this event. We wish Professor Tim Lynch all the best for their continued research into the performance of the human brain.

I would like to thank all our staff and contractors who have contributed to the success of this meeting as without them there would simply be no meeting. So from the permanent Fairyhouse team to the casual workers who help us for the festival, track staff to office staff, caterers to medical staff, CCTV to cleaners, HRI to IHRB, we thank you so much. This year has been particularly testing for our track team with one of the wettest winters on record and their work is often unappreciated

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race.

The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

The Association of Irish Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (AIRCVS)

thank you from

Are you a first time racegoer, then this section is just for you! By going through some of the racing terminology, discussing some tips to enjoy your day and what you need to bring and do once you get here, this section will ensure you get the most from your day at the races at Fairyhouse Racecourse.

Amateur: (rider) on race cards, their names are prefixed by Mr, Mrs, Captain, etc., to indicate their amateur status.

Apprentice: Young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while he or she is learning the business of race-riding.

Best Turned Out: This is the prize given to the groom of the horse that is judged to look the best in the parade ring.

Bit: A two-piece device that fits into the horse’s mouth and is attached to the reins. It allows the jockey to control and steer the horse.

Blinkers: A piece of equipment that goes over the horse’s head to restrict its vision and help it concentrate in a race.

Colt: Male, un-gelded horse up to four years old.

Conditional Jockey: The jumping equivalent of an apprentice. A young National Hunt jockey that can claim a weight allowance of up to 10lbs.

Dam: Mother of a horse.

Distance: The length of a race: 5 furlongs is the minimum and the 4 1⁄2 miles of the Grand National the longest. Also, the margin by which a horse wins or is beaten by the horse in front: this ranges from a short head to ‘by a distance’ (more than 30 lengths); a ‘length’ is measured from the horse’s nose to the start of its tail.

Draw: For flat racing only, describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls, drawn randomly the day before.

Filly: female horse up to four years old.

Foal: Horse of either sex from the time of its birth until 1 January the following year. Furlong: 220 yards (one eighth of a mile).

Gelding: Castrated horse.

Going: The description of conditions underfoot on the racecourse. Official Jockey Club going reports progress as follows: Heavy - soft - good to soft - good - good to firm - firm - hard.

Green: (of a horse) inexperienced.

Hand: Unit of four inches in which a horse’s height is measured, at the shoulder.

Handicap: A race in which the weights are calculated by an official assessor (called a handicapper). The better class horses carry the highest weights while the lesser class horses carry lower weights. The idea is to give all horses an equal chance of winning.

Judge: Official responsible for declaring the finishing order of a race and the distances between the runners.

Maiden: Horse which has not won a race.

Mare: Female horse five years and over.

Off the Bit/Off the Bridle: Describes a horse being pushed along by his jockey, losing contact with the bit in his mouth.

On the Bit/On the Bridle: Describes a horse going well within himself, still having a grip on the bit.

Pace: ‘Up with the pace’ means close to the leaders; ‘off the pace’ means some way behind the leaders.

Pattern: The elite races, divided in Flat racing into Groups One, Two, Three and Listed; and in Jumping into Grades One,Two and Three.

Photo Finish: Electronic photographic device which determines minimal distances in a close finish.

Scope: The potential for physical development in a horse.

Sire: Father of a horse.

Stewards: The panel of men and women - usually a total of four - who are responsible for seeing that the Rules of Racing are adhered to.

Stewards Enquiry: Enquiry by the stewards into the running of a race.

Weigh In/ Weigh Out: Weighing of jockey before and after a race to ensure that the correct weight has been carried; the announcement ‘weighed in’ signals that the result is official, and all bets can be settled.

Yearling: Horse of either sex from 1 January to 31 December of the year following its birth.

FEMALE JOCKEYS TO THE FORE AT FAIRYHOUSE

Jockey Phidelma Elvin fulfilled two ambitions simultaneously when riding Gain De Cause in the Ladies’ National at last year’s Easter meeting.

Elvin, who had point-to-point, bumper and hurdle winners to her name, had set herself a target of riding a winner over fences and wearing the colours of leading owner JP McManus to victory. She achieved these twin goals in guiding the Tony Martin-trained Gain De Cause to a threelength win in the race run in tribute to the memory of orthopaedic surgeon Fred Kenny for his dedicated service to Irish racing.

Historically, Fairyhouse racecourse played a part in advancing the cause of Ireland’s pioneering women jump jockeys. Ann Ferris won the 1984 Irish Grand National on 33-1 outsider Bentom Boy, trained by her father Willie Rooney, a legendary figure in the point-to-point world. For good measure, Ann’s sister Rosemary took third place on the stable’s other runner Dawson Prince.

In reality, this was a false dawn for the cause of equality. Big-race success for women riders was only sporadic in Ireland until the arrival on the scene of Nina Carberry and Katie Walsh.

Carberry added a chapter to her family’s illustrious Irish Grand National record by winning the 2011 race on Organisedconfusion for her uncle Arthur Moore. In 2015 she was followed into the history books by Katie Walsh, riding Thunder And Roses for trainer Sandra Hughes.

In November of the same year, Fairyhouse introduced a chase confined to female riders. Participants included Carberry, Walsh, emerging British rider Lizzie Kelly and Rachael Blackmore, then a 7lb claimer who had ridden a handful of winners over the previous five seasons. It was a wonderful occasion, though now recalled with sadness. The winning rider Lorna Brooke suffered fatal injuries in a fall at Taunton in April 2020.

Since 2017, when Aine O’Connor scored on Coldstonesober, Fairyhouse has staged the Ladies’ National Handicap Chase. Katie O’Farrell won the 2018 edition. Blackmore got her name on the roll of honour the following year. The 2021 winner Ifiwudicud was ridden by Liz Lalor who later broke Helen Bryce-Smith’s longstanding record to become the most successful woman rider in Irish point-to-point history.

The 2022 race produced a thrilling finish involving two of Ireland’s most accomplished women amateur riders. Fox Watch, ridden by Jody Townend for Tony Mullins, won by a neck from Maxine O’Sullivan’s mount Rightplacerightime.

Centre for Brain Health Mater Hospital

The Dublin Institute

The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital

We are most grateful to our guests who have supported us today and hope you have a wonderful afternoon. The Centre for Brain Health, Dublin Neurological Institute at the Mater University Hospital is an independent company and charity. It is a unique innovative facility with links to the original Neurological Institute in Montreal and New York. We strive to increase access and improve care to patients with neurological problems including Stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, head trauma (including concussion), brain tumours, motor neurone disease, spinal injury and headaches (including migraine). We aim to provide a high quality of care to our patients – both public & private. This is provided by consultant doctors, non consultant hospital doctors, clinical nurse specialists and services allied to medicine. By offering this multidisciplinary team approach patients travelling distances can be seen not just by a doctor, but also a clinical nurse specialist, physiotherapist etc. As a result, patients with neurological problems are assessed more rapidly, diagnosed earlier and receive appropriate treatment leading to better outcomes. There is no waiting list for the day ward which is a dedicated space and we provide a service to patients with neurological conditions whose needs may not be met by the private or public health service in Ireland.

Neurological illness affects almost 800,000 people in Ireland and occurs more frequently as we age. Unfortunately there are only 39 consultant neurologists to care for these patients. A prompt diagnosis can make an enormous difference. Surprisingly, there are many new and exciting neurological treatments that are highly effective and can change a person’s life. For example we can now pull a clot out of brain vessels to cure a bad stroke or drain a large bleed in the brain to save a life or give a patient with multiple sclerosis various anti-inflammatory treatments that stop the MS dead in its tracks.

Funding is vital to allow us continue our research and we are indebted to you for your kind support today.

Fred Kenny

Surgeon and Racing Enthusiast

I first met Fred at Michael O’Toole’s famous lunch before the Derby in 1981.

We went racing together to Cheltenham, Ascot, Paris, The Melbourne Cup and parties in Galway Castle. Fred and Laura were great company, and we miss them both. His Great Friend, Joe Keeling

In my lengthy career in racing I came across some very special people and Fred Kenny fits into that category.  I was fortunate to meet Fred over forty years ago in his days in Navan Hospital, when I would bring many of the jockeys who required treatment from injuries sustained on racetracks around the country all wanting to make their way back to Fred.  We became great friends and would meet regularly at the races as himself and Laura went racing almost as often as I did.  They were great racing fans and over the years I got to know all members of their wonderful family and it has been mine and Mary’s great pleasure to be a friend of the Kenny family, I’m really looking forward to this afternoons get together and I hope I can find a winner for Fred, he loves handing up his docket to collect!

I only met Fred for the first time in 2010 and really enjoyed meeting him here or at any other track. He was always looking for a tip or critically analysing the food and his day at Fairyhouse. He was a loveable rouge who loved being around his family and friends at the races.

We all miss Fred, but especially today we think of his family who have lost a very special Dad and Granddad. Peter Roe, Fairyhouse Racecourse
