Welcome to our fourth meeting of the year as we stage the most informative mare’s Novice Hurdle of the season, the SBK Solerina Mares Novice Hurdle.

We would like to thank SBK for their sponsorship of today’s feature race the Solerina Hurdle along with three other races. They also generously sponsored the €100,000 SBK Dan Moore at our last meeting. We wish them continued success with their operation. Today we are delighted to have the second Cistercian College Roscrea race day here at Fairyhouse. This day would not have been possible without the hard work of Willie Byrnes and his committee. We wish them continued success and look forward to seeing them back here next year.

RACE VERDICT

Martin Hassett’s runner BATTLE OF RIDGEWAY is still relatively unexposed and may go one better than in his first handicap at Thurles. On that occasion, he was a long way in front of Chainofconsquence who has been in good form since and gets plenty of weight now with his rider claiming a useful 7lb. Teescomponentsyess, second to Chainofconsquence at Limerick, may reach the money again. [Alan Sweetman] Source:

RACE VERDICT

Although WHERE’S FRANKIE has to be forgiven a poor run over hurdles here three weeks ago, he is worth a bet on overall course form that featured three consecutive wins in 2002, including this race. Baldur’s Gate has developed into a reliable sort and should get the trip. Pictures Of Home could go well in his first handicap. Low Mileage may be competitive off a declining mark. [Alan

The SBK Solerina Mares Novice Hurdle of €30,000 Well-bred Jade impressed last time and appeals strongly in a deep race

A MARE OF RARE QUALITY Fairyhouse is an appropriate venue to honour the Bowe family’s wonderful mare Solerina. Winner of 22 races, often in bold front-running style, she was unbeaten in three appearances at the track, capturing the Grade 1 Hatton’s Grace Hurdle on three consecutive occasions for rider Gary Hutchinson. Five years younger than her brilliant stablemate Limestone Lad, Solerina was foaled in 1997, a daughter of the 1991 St Leger winner Toulon out of Deep Peace, a mare with undistinguished form but sired by the influential Deep Run. Sent into training initially with Tom Foley, she won a bumper at Naas in March 2002 on her fourth start. The following season, under the supervision of Michal Bowe, brother of her owner/breeder John, Solerina lost only one of her eight starts over hurdles. Her victims included the talented Central House and subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Kicking King. She ended a superb campaign by defeating the subsequent dual Champion Hurdle winner Hardy Eustace in the Grade 1 Deloitte at Leopardstown. The highlight of her first season in the senior ranks was a victory over her half-brother and stablemate Florida Coast in the 2003 Hatton’s Grace. She repeated that success in 2004, giving an outstanding performance to beat another subsequent Champion Hurdle winner, Brave Inca, by six lengths. In December 2005 after winning the Lismullen Hurdle at Navan for a second time, she completed the Hatton’s Grace hat-trick, displaying great determination to beat the Johnny Murtagh-ridden Golden Cross by a short head, with Brave Inca back in third under Tony McCoy. Only six days later she underlined her toughness by winning the Grade 2 Tara Hurdle at Navan for the third time. The following month she was retired after a Naas victory that marked her 18th success over hurdles and her 13th under Hutchinson. Besides her bumper success, she won three races on the Flat and was second in the 2004 Irish Cesarewitch. She was a mare of rare quality. By Alan Sweetman

Ashroe Diamond (right) ridden by Danny Mullins winning the Gr.3 awardsandgifts.ie Mares Novice Hurdle in 2023 at Fairyhouse

Willie Mullins, who has captured the Grade 3 SBK Solerina Mares Novice Hurdle eight times since 2012, provides four of the seven runners for the 2024 edition.

Henry de Bromhead, who saddled the outstanding Honeysuckle to victory in 2019 and was successful again with Minella Melody the following year, is represented by Look To The West. Gordon Elliott runs Miss Agusta in the Gigginstown House Stud colours carried by the stable’s 2017 winner Shattered Love. Taking on the might of the top stables, County Down trainer Pat Collins runs home-bred mare Leahs Tricks. She is a close relation to Joe Tizzard’s talented chaser Amarillo Sky and has the merit of being a course winner of a two-mile maiden hurdle earlier in the season. Look To The West won a point-to-point for Mick Murphy at Dromahane IN April 2022 and impressed as a smart recruit to the Robcour squad when winning a maiden hurdle on her racecourse debut at Navan in November. She can be expected to hold her own in this company Miss Agusta, second in the Goffs Land Rover Bumper in 2022, won at Galway in October on her first start over hurdles but was well beaten at Thurles last month, in a race in which one of the Mullins runners, Pink In The Park, was also unplaced. Pink In The Park has since run well at Leopardstown, finishing second to the progressive Jetara, who had previously won easily at Punchestown from A Penny A Hundred, another of the Mullins quartet. The Mullins team is completed by two French imports, Judicieuse Allen and Jade De Grugy, maiden winners at Limerick and Leopardstown respectively after Christmas. Jade De Grugy, whose dam is a half-sister to top two-mile chaser Sire De Grugy, created a powerful impression in winning by fifteen lengths and makes strong appeal as the mare most likely to continue the stable’s dominance of this Grade 3 contest. A Penny A Hundred may follow her home. By Alan Sweetman

Willie Mullins has a terrific record in this race and can enhance it with French import JADE DE GRUGY who won in great style on her Irish debut at Leopardstown. Having been absent for a long time, there should be plenty of improvement to come, a remark that also applies to Navan winner Look To The West. A Penny A Hundred may prove second-best of her trainer’s four runners. [Alan Sweetman]

RACE VERDICT

If he’s fully tuned up for his belated return to action, SHOOT THE BLUES could be the one to side with after a likeable debut performance in a Limerick bumper and his yard have been amongst the winners in recent weeks. £150,000 purchase, Touch Me Not, was in the process of running a nice race before coming down in a point last year and any support for him on rules bow could be significant. Willie Mullins’ paid Western Diego and Houlanbatordechais are both feared. [Phill Anderson] Source: Racing Post

RACE VERDICT

This can go the way of NOW IS THE HOUR\o who probably would have won without coming down at Limerick last month and he can gain compensation here in what may be a lesser contest. Time For Tea is probably the main danger after an improved effort at Down Royal last month and Midweek Voices is another to consider with the step up in trip sure to suit. RACE VERDICT

RACE 6 PREDICTOR The Predictor is a ‘Computer Generated’ predicted outcome of the race in visual form, generated by an algorithm of key factors (including eg current form, ratings and going.)

It’s hard to oppose MIGHTY OAK LAD despite his rise in weights. He won by 11 lengths last time out and won so easily that a 16lb rise may not stop him going in again. Balkito could be well treated in this sphere if he comes on from his latest start and Givehimthehonour should be able to build on his handicap debut last time. [Phill Anderson] Source: Racing Post

RACE VERDICT

RACE 7 PREDICTOR The Predictor is a ‘Computer Generated’ predicted outcome of the race in visual form, generated by an algorithm of key factors (including eg current form, ratings and going.)

The newcomer Argento Boy is a fascinating contender given that his half-brother won a bumper on rules debut before landing the Champion Bumper back in 2013. If there’s market support for Willie Mullins’ runner, it will probably be significant but slight preference is for LIEBER NICC who was an eyecatcher at Leopardstown last month when sticking to his task and a switch to bumpers may help him. HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.
