Bathe around the world, in Utah

WorldSprings has opened its third geothermal spa in the US at Zion Canyon Hot Springs, in Utah, with more than 50 mineral pools.

This desert oasis joins WorldSprings’ sites in Texas and Colorado as the company expands its concept – recreating globally renowned hot spring locations such as Vichy in France, The Dead Sea and The Blue Lagoon, Iceland, by engineering the water.

Zion Canyon Hot Springs is both owned and managed by WorldSprings. The project broke ground in March last year and opened to the public today (15 July 2025). The site’s maximum capacity is 800 guests at any one time.

At the 2024 Global Wellness Summit, Christopher Barrett, CEO of WorldSprings, highlighted

his plans to bring water-based wellness to everyone and this third site is part of that strategy.

Zion Canyon Hot Springs has 53 bodies of water – each of which features one of three types of water: mineral, freshwater and “inspired”.

Glacial bathing

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies will mark a "wellness first" for Fairmont when it opens its new thermal bathing circuit

■ The indoor Glacial Lounge is where guests will be able to sample small dishes of freshly prepared food – including bone broth, nootropics and adaptogens

Anew bathing experience called Basin Glacial Waters will open at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada, later this quarter.

Basin Glacial Waters takes its name from its setting: Lake Louise is a natural basin fed by a direct glacial water source, the Victoria Glacier.

The 539-key hotel, owned by Oxford properties and a capital partner, is set within more than 6,500sq km of protected pine forest in the heart of Ban National Park, a UNESCO heritage site.

The concept

The new 1,719sq m bathing facility has been in development for two decades and the building is by internationally recognised architect Matteo Thun.

Basin will have two wet treatment rooms in addition to the eight rooms at the hotel's existing spa

The design is inspired by the geological shifts and natural waterways that have shaped the landscape over time.

Accor, which owns operating company Fairmont, wants the site to define how visitors seek overall wellbeing in the Canadian Rockies.

Emlyn Brown, senior VP of wellbeing, strategy, design and development at Accor said, “Basin sets a new worldwide standard for thermal spa luxury, and will be a flagship for Fairmont’s new wellbeing platform. We’re confident this is the most exciting wellness opening of 2025, representing a groundbreaking shift in the meaning of wellness set within the breathtaking Canadian Rockies.”

For Matteo Thun and Partners’ first Canadian project, the firm

partnered closely with local architect MTA of Calgary. Barr + Wray were the hydrotherapy and thermal consultants and IBI worked on the landscape architecture, RJC provided structural engineering and WSP is the environmental consultant. Amy McDonald of Under a Tree consulted on the project for the owner in its early stages.

Brand new imagery shows the 89-key hotel’s Surrenne Riviera club, which o ers three floors of health and wellness facilities, with sweeping views over the French commune of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and the Mediterranean coast beyond.

This opening follows Surrenne's debut in London, UK, last year and it also plans to launch a Surrenne members club in Paris, France, in 2027.

Aufguss competitors take attendees on an exciting emotional journey

VITAL SIGNS

Aufguss saunamasters

Winners of the US trials will compete at the Aufguss World Masters in Italy

Judging from the lines of folks in the queue, you might have imagined that you were waiting to enter the latest trendy restaurant or sizzling cocktail bar. In fact, the destination was even hotter – the event sauna at Bathhouse Williamsburg, New York City, US!

The first-ever national US trials for the Aufguss World Masters Championship were held there recently and the excitement from organisers, partners Design for Leisure, competitors and attendees was palpable.

■ The trials took place at Bathhouse Williamsburg, NYC

Over two days, eight solo contenders and two teams competed to represent the US at the annual worldwide competition in Verona, Italy, between 15-21 September.

The fifteen-minute performances were judged by an international panel of four experts.

Lasse Eriksen, Aufguss WM VP and Norway Sauna Association was joined by Riccardo Marzi (Aufguss.it), Enrico Ganassin and Ong Lay Pay (Danish Sauna Association).

Judging criteria

Solo contestants are judged on five categories:

■ Professionalism Hygiene, cleanliness and safety are key to making participants feel comfortable and allow the audience to connect to the saunamaster's storytelling.

■ Heat A crucial component for any sauna, but judges look at how it's used during the ritual and when it's increased during the experience.

■ Towel waving techniques The difficulty of the style used and whether the movements integrate both hands and throws is assessed.

PHOTO: JIM GRAHAM

■ Scents Essential oils are used on the sauna's stones, which are heated to 200-300 degrees Celsius. The judges want to see the oils, which have different burning points, used correctly and at the right points within the show's narrative.

■ The Show The judges assess the atmosphere and use of music and timing and how compelling the storyline is.

During team performances, judges pay attention to choreography and synchronisation.

Second-place finishers will have another opportunity to compete in play-offs (to be held in Germany, 28-31 August) for a last chance to participate in the World Championships.

This year national Aufguss World Masters trials have been held in 18 countries, including first-time entrants for Canada and the US – which join Japan as being among the first non-European countries to take part. ●

Bridgestone develops sensory bed with artificial muscles

Bridgestone, the global tyre manufacturer, has created artificial rubber muscle with a view to getting into the wellness and robotics sector.

Professionals at this year's Milan Design Week heard how it's spent 40 years developing a flexible and movable device and has now established an in-house start-up, Bridgestone Softrobotics Ventures (BSV), to roll it out.

The core product is Morph, a series of soft, artificial muscles powered by air which envelop people and use haptic technology to replicate natural movements. The breathing of an elephant, the wings of a bird flying or the ebb and flow of the tides are converted into data via video extraction and then installed in the muscles and played back.

BSV has collaborated with Zen monk Toryo Ito and creator group Konel to introduce four pop-up 'zenbot salons', known as Morph Inns, across Tokyo where people can use the technology to "reconnect with themselves in a profound and

authentic way". The experience is amplified by a combination of visual, auditory and olfactory effects.

At the Morph Inn pop-ups, drinks are served and "neuro music" is played, created by a music app called VIE Tunes, to enhance brain rhythms.
