Champneys heads to Europe

Champneys will open a spa in Europe at the Gran Marbella Resort and Beach Club in Spain on 1 July, in partnership with Iconic Luxury Hotels, which is part of London and Regional.

The company will operate the Champneys Wellness Spa, at the 135key resort on Real de Zaragoza beach.

The spa will feature seven treatment rooms, a sauna, steamroom and pool, as well as a studio, offering a mix of classes, from movement to mindfulness.

The design and concept for the space will pay homage to its Andalusian surroundings, merging the Champneys' experience with a Mediterranean vibe.

Guests can expect a spa menu featuring Champneys' signature treatments, in addition to new coastal-inspired experiences.

"As we celebrate 100 years of Champneys this year, it felt the perfect time to expand into Europe," said CEO, Alan Whiteley.

The property – formerly the Vincci Estrella del Mar – was acquired by London and Regional in 2016 and is being rebranded.

Champneys has eight locations in the UK, including four resorts. It announced a property for Marbella in 2008 in partnership with Casa Nita SL and considered a Caribbean development in 2010. It also previously had a spa in Brussels.

Masa Sugiyama celebrates Chiva-Som Hua Hin's 30 years with face-sculpting

Chiva-Som Hua Hin is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a 'season of reflection', which will see visiting practitioners delivering complimentary educational sessions and paid treatments to guests. One of the most notable is face sculptor Masa Sugiyama, a Japanese-born facial therapist who is currently based in France. Sugiyama will educate resort guests about her signature non-surgical cranial massage technique during two sessions.

Called the Masa Methode, the treatment sculpts the face by relieving muscle tightness and reducing swelling, which enhances facial contours and can makes the face appear better defined.

The technique targets the masticatory muscles in the jaw, as well as muscles in tensionprone areas, such as the occipital muscles at the base of the skull. These sessions are part of four months of retreats from practitioners around the world.

Hoshino Resorts to open Ryokan in historic onsen town in Japan

A new hot spring resort is due to open in the historic ski and spa town of Kusatsu, Japan, in Q2 of 2026.

The forest resort, owned and operated by Hoshino Resorts, will be connected to the town by a private tunnel, exclusively reserved for resort guests.

The new, 94-key property will be managed under Hoshino Resorts' hot spring ryokan brand ‘Kai’ and will trade as Kai Kusatsu.

Located on a hill overlooking the active volcanoes of Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, the hot spring resort will be modelled on a traditional Japanese inn, or Ryokan.

The new property will have a bathhouse, lounge, courtyard, dining area, shop and a ‘Kai cultural discovery hall’. This space is a feature at other Kai-branded hotels, offering guests the chance to try free activities that celebrate elements of Japan’s regional cultures and crafts.

Forest spa plants recovery roots

The new recovery-focused spa area complements existing spa facilities, such as an onsen washing zone that leads to a 42-degree Celsius onsen-style pool

■ Rizzato Spa Consulting developed the sciencebased programming

The new area will o er lifestyle changes to improve guests' nutrition, movement and rest

The Naturhotel Forsthofgut resort has opened a healthfocused extension to its existing spa facilities in the forests of Salzburg at the base of the Asitz mountain in Austria.

The 109-key hotel and its land has been privately owned and managed for more than 400 years by the Schmuck family, whose hospitality philosophy is ‘harmony with nature’.

The family has expanded its existing 5,700sq m WaldSpa (translated in English to Forest Spa) by transforming 200sq m of unused space into the newly-opened WaldSpa Health.

Developed in collaboration with Dagmar Rizzato of Rizzato Spa Consulting, the concept is based on four pillars: roots, strength, breath and mind – based on the parallels between the human body and a tree (with roots, trunk, leaves and crown). The new space combines science-based treatments, proximity to nature and personalised health programming.

Therapies at WaldSpa Health

Treatments include cryotherapy within a cryochamber, by Druschke, that reaches -110 degrees celsius.

The spa will also o er guests IHHT training (Intermittent HypoxicHyperoxic Therapy) and infusions

■ In addition to the new Wald Spa Health, the property has spa facilities for adults as well as a separate family spa area

There is increasing demand from guests for targeted measures to improve their quality of life in the long-term

of vitamins, minerals and amino acids at the spa, both of which are therapies supplied by Mitovit.

Health diagnostics will be recorded using technology from uVida and Technogym Checkup to provide individual data on metabolism and fat burning rates to inform personalised training plans for peak performance.

Board of specialists

This more medical area of the spa has been created in consultation with a board of specialists, including practitioners in internal medicine, a former professional athlete, a breath coach and a physiotherapist.

In an exclusive interview with Spa Business, Michaela van Leusen, spa manager at Naturhotel Forsthofgut, said: “The new WaldSpa Health area is an important building block in our continued development

towards being a holistic spa. There is increasing demand from guests –not only for relaxation – but also for targeted measures to improve their quality of life in the long-term.”

Health package

The Health Escape package o ers a three to seven-night stay, plus access to WaldSpa Health’s facilities, starting at €990 (US$1,117, £834) per person. It includes a cryotherapy session, an assessement on Technogym Checkup and a hypoxia session, as well as access to spa facilities and the hotel’s itinerary of nature-based activities.

Pre-existing WaldSpa facilities

The new WaldSpa Health complements the property’s relaxation-focused spa areas, which include two-floors of adults-only facilities and a separate spa building for families and children. ●

The art of healing: how creativity is transforming wellness travel

Interview with Synergy founder, Laura Montesanti

Why did you choose 'the role of artistic practice in healing' as the focus for this year’s Synergy – The Retreat Show?

Art has the unique ability to reach places within us that words and logic often cannot. Healing isn’t just physical or intellectual – it’s emotional, energetic and deeply personal.

Whether through painting, dance, writing, or sound – the arts o er a transformative bridge between our inner world and the outer one. This expression invites release and renewal.

As we gather in Italy – a country steeped in creative heritage – it feels especially meaningful to honour the arts as a vital part of our holistic wellbeing. In a world that often prioritises productivity over presence, celebrating

creativity as a tool for healing feels timely, necessary and deeply resonant.

What advice would you give travellers looking to deepen their healing journey through creative exploration?

Let go of expectations and allow the

process to guide you. Earlier this year, I took a watercolour class and was reminded that creativity flourishes in surrender. In watercolour, the water leads. What may seem like a mistake often transforms into something beautifully authentic.

Creative expression teaches us to embrace imperfection and trust the unknown. You don’t need to be an artist to benefit – you just need to be open, curious and willing to feel. Through this lens, creativity becomes both a mirror for selfdiscovery and a path to healing.

How is the industry integrating creative practices into the wellness travel industry? In the retreat world, creativity is being

■ The 2025 event will be held in Sardinia, in October

■ The programme features excursions, networking opportunities, workshops and holistic practices

woven into programmes through art therapy workshops, expressive movement and dance, sound healing, journaling, storytelling circles and crafts like pottery or weaving.

These activities provide participants with powerful non-verbal tools for selfexpression, emotional release and deeper introspection – essential components of a truly holistic healing journey. Similarly, in hospitality and travel, properties are beginning to understand that guests seek meaningful experiences.

Hotels and resorts are increasingly o ering artist residencies, music therapy sessions, creative writing retreats and immersive cultural arts programmes. These are designed to connect visitors more deeply with the destination and with themselves.

As wellness continues to reshape travel and hospitality, the role of the arts will only become more central

This integration is driven by the realisation that healing is multi-dimensional. It’s not just about relaxation; it's about creating, expressing, connecting and transforming. The arts bring texture, emotion and authenticity to the guest experience. This can help people reconnect with their inner world, while engaging meaningfully with the places they visit.

As wellness continues to reshape travel and hospitality, the role of the arts will only become more central – o ering guests not just a getaway, but a journey of creative healing and personal renewal.

How will we see healing through art reflected in the programme of this year’s show?

Our 2025 programme is a vibrant journey into the healing power of creativity. From vocal activation to sound healing and movement, each experience is designed to reconnect attendees with their creative essence. Every moment will invite expression, transformation and joy.

Contrast bathing is accessible and enjoyable but too much or too little heat

can harm

Dr Marc Cohen, medical doctor, university professor and holistic health practitioner

Extreme bathing: common sense safety

Contrast bathing – which involves alternating between hot, cold and thermo-neutral environments – offers multiple health benefits, including improved resilience, recovery and relaxation.

A growing awareness of these benefits has led saunas, hot tubs and ice baths to be used in homes, gyms and bathing facilities without medical supervision. While contrast bathing is both accessible and enjoyable, heat is powerful and too much or too little can harm as well as heal. To avoid adverse effects, it's essential to adhere to these simple safety principles: drink, take care, tune in, be aware and rest.

Drink

Proper hydration is essential to regulate body temperature, detoxify the system and flush away contaminants and waste – yet contrast bathing may cause dehydration. This can be due to excessive sweating caused by heat and increased urine production from extra blood flow through the kidneys caused by cold. It’s therefore

vital to stay well-hydrated before, during and after contrast bathing. Adding salt, minerals or herbs to guests' drinking water can further enhance absorption and electrolyte balance.

Take care

Special care is needed around hot or cold elements, as heat sources such as steam or hot surfaces can cause burns or scalds while sub-zero temperatures risk frostnip or frostbite.

Care is also needed to avoid dizziness, faints or falls caused by sudden changes in posture or slippery surfaces. It’s therefore prudent for guests to be advised to move slowly, sit briefly before standing to stabilise blood pressure and also to ensure floors are dry and free of slip hazards.

Tune in

Contrast bathing allows people to experience the joy of cooling down when hot, heating up when cold and the bliss of thermal-neutral comfort. It also evokes “forced mindfulness” – when thermal stress demands complete

Don't let guests go beyond feeling "comfortably uncomfortable"

attention. This provides an opportunity for people to practice staying calm under duress.

To ensure guests stay safe and avoid being overwhelmed, advise them to tune into their feelings, maintain calm breaths and never let themselves be pressured to go beyond their limits. Also ensure they can easily exit, rest and rehydrate whenever needed. This is especially important for those with anxiety or PTSD, as cold exposure can mimic anxiety symptoms.

Be aware

Being aware requires people to actively monitor their reactions and stop the session, drink some water and rest if they experience adverse symptoms such as fainting, dizziness, nausea, uncontrolled shivering or excessive discomfort.

It's important for guests to avoid going beyond feeling "comfortably uncomfortable" at any time and also wise for them to avoid contrast bathing while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Consult a healthcare provider if they have heart issues or other conditions of concern.

Doing nothing is a profound spiritual practice that fosters a sense of being in balance with nature

Rest

Rest is vital after contrast bathing, much like relaxation at the end of a yoga class. Deep relaxation in a comfortable thermo-neutral environment lets the mind and body settle into homeostatic equilibrium and experience the deep stillness that comes with actively doing nothing. Doing nothing is not just a form of relaxation, it’s a profound spiritual practice that fosters a sense of being in balance with nature.

Enjoy

Contrast bathing allows people to build resilience under stress and experience deep relaxation. To minimise risks, prioritise comfort, progress slowly and consult a healthcare provider if you have any concerns about your guests. ●

Kerstin Florian launches multi-peptideinfused sheet mask to promote skin longevity

Sweden-based skincare company, Kerstin Florian, has launched a face mask for use in spa treatments that deeply hydrates and rejuvenates all skin types.

The Correcting Restorative MultiPeptide Sheet Masque uses a blend of hyaluronic acids, herbal essences and bioactive peptides – such as palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 and acetyl tetrapeptide-15. These ingredients hydrate the skin and target signs of ageing, including hyperpigmentation, puffiness, fine lines and wrinkles. The formula is designed to enhance

Pick bold colours with new linens from The Madison Collection

Bold forward-thinking tones that convey class and innovation underpin our exciting new Wabi Sabi bath and spa linens,” says Charmaine Lang, founder of The Madison Collection – a family-run business that’s been supplying spas globally since 1999.

Looking at what colours were not available in hospitality-grade linens and which hues best complement the design of leading spas, Lang and her team selected black and warm, rich copper for Wabi Sabi’s robes, towels and mats.

The Madison Collection is known for its eco-luxury approach and Lang says Wabi Sabi has been made from completely sustainable Brazilian cotton.

Weighing only 280gsm, it’s one of the lightest and free-flowing 100 per cent cotton terry towels on the market. Lang adds that the lightweight design means you can launder more than double the number of towels per load, compared to traditional luxury linens.
