FOUNDINGFAITH: The Churches of Charleston

Each church tells a unique story of the holy city

Charleston

is often referred to as “The Holy City” due to its rich tapestry of historic churches and religious diversity It is evident, by the nearly 400 church steeples in the Charleston skyline, that founding faith in South Carolina played a pivotal role in the beginnings of our state Initially, religion in the South was predominantly shaped by Anglicanism, as the colony was initially settled by the English in the late 17th century The Church of England, or Anglican Church, held a dominant position. St. Philip's and St. Michael's Episcopal Churches were among the greatest in establishing and propagating Anglican practices here. Over time, South Carolina became a diverse religious landscape, welcoming other denominations including French Huguenots and Jews, and contributing to the vast array of religious identity that characterizes the state today

St. Michael’s is the oldest church in Charleston with its congregation firmly established in the beginning as being congregants of St. Philip’s. The current location, with its majestic and iconic white steeple sitting on the corner of Broad and Meeting Streets, first housed St. Philip’s from 1681 until 1727.

a city with a deeply rooted historical narrative

ST. PHILIP’S CONGREGATION WAS FORMED BY THE CHARLES TOWN

COLONISTS AND IS THE OLDEST CONGREGATION SOUTH OF VIRGINIA. THE CHURCH IS COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE “WESTMINSTER ABBEY OF SOUTH CAROLINA”

08 Carolina Keepsakes | spring 2024

The congregation split at that time, and the lower half of the city formed St. Michael’s while the upper half of the city moved to the current location of St Philip’s St Michael’s sits on one of the Four Corners of the Law representing ecclesiastical law. It has been visited by President George Washington and Robert E Lee Steeped in history dripping with war and natural disasters, the church bells have a story all their own They were once taken to England as a prize of war, but a kind London merchant bought and returned them.

St Philip’s congregation was formed by Charles Town colonists and is the oldest congregation south of Virginia The current church was constructed from 1835 to 1838 by Joseph Hyde. Both revivalist George Whitfield and evangelist John Wesley preached at St. Philip’s Signers of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are buried on her grounds as well as governors, bishops and a United States Vice President Commonly known as the “Westminster Abbey of South Carolina,” St. Philip’s boasts Tuscan porticoes, Roman columns and Corinthian arcades

The French Huguenot Church was organized in the late 1600s by refugees fleeing religious persecution and reflects Charleston's diverse cultural heritage. The current church is the third built on its land It was damaged during the Civil War by shellfire and nearly destroyed completely by the earthquake of 1886 The French Huguenot Church is the only remaining Huguenot church in America Located on the corner of Church and Queen Streets in the French Quarter district, it still holds one service a year in French The stucco over brick Gothic Revival church stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the French settlers in the city

THE FRENCH HUGUENOT CHURCH WAS ONCE

KNOWN AS “THE CHURCH OF THE TIDES” AS ITS WORSHIPPERS ARRIVED BY BOAT

The First Baptist Church of Charleston boasts a rich history and striking architectural significance

Established in 1682, it is the oldest Baptist church in the South originating from Kittery, Maine Its congregation moved to Charleston in 1696 due to religious persecution under Willian Screven’s leadership along with 28 congregants. The current church building was completed in 1822 and designed by Robert Mills in the Greek Revival style It features a majestic portico with four towering columns. Unlike the other churches of the time, Mills chose not to include a steeple in keeping with Greek aesthetics. The historic cemetery, known as “The Circular Churchyard” holds the grave of Reverend

Reverend Richard Furman. The First Baptist Church once served as a Confederate watchtower during the Civil War.

Inside, the solid mahogany pulpit still stands today with its active congregation and historical legacy continuing

Each of these churches tells a unique story, contributing to Charleston's identity as a city with a multifaceted and deeply rooted historical narrative They have all withstood the trials of war and horrid natural disasters, embodying resilience and perseverance that come together in a beautiful collective of spiritual heritage and architectural splendor

Hydrangeas and their gorgeous, graceful blooms add an enchanting and timeless elegance to any garden in the South

The Annabelle hydrangea, with its billowing clouds of large, pom-pom blooms, lends an altogether lacy charm. Its snowball-like clusters, composed of numerous smaller flowers, create a striking visual transforming any landscape into a dreamlike haven On the other hand, Big-leaf hydrangeas, known for their iconic heart-shaped leaves and vibrant, mophead blooms, add a burst of color and sophistication. These hydrangeas, with their ability to change color based on soil acidity, paint the garden in hues ranging from powder blue to deep pink Just sprinkle your morning coffee grounds into the soil to see which shade you prefer!

These beautiful blooms are just as different in their care as their appearance. The Big-leaf hydrangeas (hydrangea macrophylla) prefer not to be pruned throughout the flowering season, whereas Annabelle hydrangeas (hydrangea arborscens) grow on new wood

TABLEROCKTEACO.

In the Upstate of South Carolina, Table Rock Tea Co. grows real American tea and sells varieties of both black and green teas They even offer free tours of the farm where you are sure to laugh along the way while gaining quite the education. You can also enjoy your own cup of hot or cold tea back at their museum. Did you know that all tea begins with the same plant? It is simply the duration of processing that gives them different and distinct flavors. While at Table Rock Tea, we adored owners Steve & Jennifer Lorch’s offerings. However, our greatest takeaway is their testament of faith in being exactly where and doing precisely what they were called to do, although neither is local to the area. They were truly planted here and have cultivated a community that celebrates both hard work and joyful celebration.

Hospitality at Home

A Truly Southern Tea Party

Let’s clink our cups to the Love we share, the Stories we tell, and the Memories we create.

Hosting a tea party is a charming affair that transforms a simple gathering into an elegant and intimate occasion. With carefully selected teas, delicate pastries, and a tasteful ambiance, it creates a space where conversations flow as smoothly as the tea being poured, making every sip a moment to savor. Mother’s Day, Easter, birthday celebrations or even a simple Saturday afternoon are all opportunities to set out a few nibbles and pour a hot or cold spot of tea.

22 Carolina Keepsakes | spring 2024

As you plan your next tea affair, you may be thinking that it need be served with scones, petit fours and madeleines. Around our homes and throughout the South, you are more likely to encounter fresh cucumber sandwiches, pimento cheese, deviled eggs and cheese straws set out instead. Truly nothing is more necessary for a tea than the gathering of family and friends together to sip and celebrate all the goodness that surrounds us. Cheers!

Grandma Lottie’s Sweet Tea

3 Family-sized bags of black tea (regular or decaffeinated)

1 ½ cups of cane sugar

Fill your gallon-sized pot with water, cover with lid and bring to a boil on the stove. Add your tea bags, cover again, take off the heat and let steep for 20 minutes. Stir in the sugar and allow to cool. You may also enjoy it hot now, too! Pour into your favorite pitcher or tea jugs (two ½ gallon mason jars work well) and keep in the refrigerator. You’ll be making more again before you know it!

Grandma Lottie’s Pimento Cheese

2 8oz blocks of sharp cheddar cheese

½-¾ cup Duke’s® mayo

Small jar of diced red pimentos & a smidge of the juice from the jar

Pinch of salt

Fresh cracked black pepper

Shred the cheese and add seasonings on top. Stir with a wooden spoon to incorporate the seasonings. Add mayo and pimentos. Stir well. Cover and let it “sit and get happy” for a few hours or overnight if you’re able. Enjoy with pita chips, crackers, on a sandwich or however you like!
