Among the live oaks and historic grounds, equestrian life flourished in the first half of the 20 century in Camden. Marked by fox hunts, polo matches, and elegant gatherings, wealthy families brought their finest thoroughbreds to train on Camden’s sandy terrain. It was within this milieu that the Carolina Cup was born The event quickly became both a beloved tradition. th

Fromthe1948Garnet&Black UniversityofSouthCarolinaYearbook

One other notable person who resided in Camden and is believed to have been one of the occupants of 1802 Lyttleton Street is Donald A Campbell, Jr A respected educator and civic figure, Mr. Campbell’s life and career reflected a deep commitment to community, heritage, and education A member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity and the University of South Carolina’s Class of 1950, Campbell embodied the values of leadership and tradition that marked his generation

By 1957, Campbell had taken on the role of Distributive Education teacher at Camden High School, a position that underscored his innovative approach to learning and workforce readiness. Distributive Education, a forward-thinking program at the time, blended classroom instruction with practical, on-the-job training in fields like retail, marketing, and management.

Under Campbell's guidance, students gained real-world experience while still in high school, preparing them for careers in the burgeoning post-war economy and contributing to the vitality of Camden’s local businesses In the 1980s, it may have been Mr Campbell who oversaw significant additions that were made to 1802 Lyttleton Street including the modern kitchen wing, the spacious family room, the back porch and the installation of the pool This is unconfirmed, but there is reasonable evidence to suggest validity to this idea. These enhancements were completed with utmost sensitivity to the home’s original architectural design, demonstrating Campbell’s deep respect and appreciation for the home’s past and an honest desire to preserve its character for future generations

In recent years, 1802 Lyttleton Street has been stewarded by a retired couple who have completed an . an extensive renovation of the upstairs Master suite during their tenure Additionally, they replaced the original pool with a 50 foot by 22 foot gunite pool. Now, this humble estate is carefully preserved and ready for the next generation of proud owners
