CELEBRATING OUR HISTORY & HERITAGE:

Architect Robert Mills

From the sandy shores of South Carolina to the steps of Washington, D.C....

Robert Mills, the renowned American architect, led a life marked by a passion for architecture and public service. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1781. Hailing from humble beginnings, Mills exhibited a strong desire for education and creativity from an early age. His architectural journey began after he worked as a millwright, eventually leading him to study in Europe, where he absorbed the principles of neoclassical design.

Throughout his life, he remained dedicated to his craft and played a vital role in promoting neoclassical and Greek Revival architecture. He left behind iconic structures including many courthouses found throughout our beloved South Carolina, the famed Robert Mills House in Columbia, and even the Washington Monument. The Robert Mills Courthouse is also known as the Kershaw County Courthouse. This courthouse was constructed between 1822 and 1825. It reflects Robert Mills’ classical training and commitment to the Greek Revival style.

Robert Mills leaves a legacy that endures with a marked impact.

The Colleton County Courthouse was constructed in 1822 making it another one of the oldest courthouses in South Carolina. Both courthouses are still in use today. The Robert Mills House in Columbia is a historic mansion showcasing the early 19th-century Southern lifestyle. Mills designed this home for Ainsley and Sarah Hall, but it was never formally used as a personal residence. It was first used to house the Columbia Theological Seminary in 1831 where Woodrow Wilson’s father was on staff. Once the seminary moved to its permanent residence in Georgia, it housed missionary families and later was the first location for Columbia Bible College, now known as Columbia International University. When the college moved in 1960, The Robert Mills House was restored and opened to the public as a museum.

The gardens surrounding The Robert Mills House, although only added in the past 50 years, are English formal style as believed Ainsley Hall would have preferred had he lived to see the home to completion. Robert Mills’ architectural influence remains important through historical and cultural landmarks in South Carolina. Mills’ helped shape the state’s visual identity and his works have stood the test of time with a legacy that endures having a marked impact on not only architecture in South Carolina but throughout our great country.

HOLE-IN-ONE WITH HAMPTON Golf Tips from our Future Pro Here are a few things I’ve learned so far as a young golfer. It is very important to be prepared!

1. Count your clubs before you go out on the course and then make sure you check them after each hole, so you don’t accidentally leave one on the golf course.

2. Be sure to carry lots of extra golf balls in case the course you are playing on has a lot of water hazards.

3. Other things you need to bring for a good day are suncreen, bug spray, and money to tip the snack cart driver.

4. Barbecue chips and ginger ale make a great mid-game snack!

The secret of the season is ...apple cider simmering on the stove, especially at Christmastime or on a chilly evening at home. It is a cherished tradition that warms both hearts and spirits. You will want to serve it warm and infused with a blend of spices such as cinnamon, cloves, and orange. It creates a fragrant concoction that evokes the essence of winter and celebration. The moment your guests enter your home it’s aroma will welcome them warmly. Whether enjoyed by the fireside with loved ones or sipped from festive mugs at holiday gatherings, apple cider adds a sense of coziness and nostalgia. It's not only a delicious and comforting drink but also a symbol of togetherness and the simple joys of the season. I have many memories of my mother’s cider being served daylong as she was known to keep the crockpot on warm and a collection of mugs nearby for anyone to sip as they were inclined.

Ingredients

Directions

1 gallon of fresh apple cider or unfiltered apple juice 1 medium orange 1 (1 ½ inch) piece of fresh ginger 5 cinnamon sticks 1 tablespoon of whole cloves Orange slices for serving

Pour the cider into a 5 quart or larger slow cooker or saucepan Add the fresh ingredients cutting the orange & ginger into small pieces Add the spices {nutmeg, anise or allspice may also be added if you desire} If you do not wish to have your spices loose in the cider, you can wrap them in a cheesecloth or gather into a sachet.

Cover and simmer for 3-4 hours on low in the slow cooker or 1 hour on low on the stove.

Keep warm and serve garnished with the orange slices.

Leftover cider can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Just reheat & enjoy!
