By Mandy Carter
Thanksgiving week looks a little different in every household. For some, it starts in the kitchen with the smell of cinnamon rolls and turkey already roasting in the oven. For others, it begins on the couch, coffee in hand, watching the Macy’s parade
But for many families, including ours, it now begins with something active: lacing up our shoes and heading out for a run together
Our tradition actually started after we moved to Babcock Ranch, where the community hosted a local Turkey Trot during Thanksgiving week It was such a fun, festive way to spend time outdoors that it quickly became something we looked forward to each year.
Then, as my son got involved in track and cross country, the tradition took on a deeper meaning. Now it’s not just a run, it’s a celebration of dedication, health, and family It’s become one of those simple rituals that remind us how far we’ve come, literally and figuratively
There’s something special about getting outside on a crisp November morning during the holiday break, knowing that all across the country (and right here in sunny Southwest Florida) other families are doing the same
It’s not about who’s the fastest or who finishes first (though my teenage son may disagree on that statement); it’s about gratitude in motion It’s about celebrating what our bodies can do, surrounded by the people we love most.
The power of a family run
What I love most about this tradition is that it brings every generation together. Kids, parents, grandparents, even the family dog can join in There’s laughter, encouragement, a little friendly competition, and the reward of feeling energized long before the next slice of pie
For families with little ones, it doesn’t have to be a formal race It can be as simple as a backyard “fun run,” a stroll around your community lake, or a bike ride through your neighborhood
The point isn’t perfection. It’s connection It’s reminding our kids that gratitude can be expressed not just in words, but in movement, by taking care of our bodies and enjoying time together outdoors

There’s something about getting outside during Thanksgiving week that truly sets the tone for the entire holiday season The fresh air quiets the mind, the movement releases stress, and the laughter fills you with appreciation before the busyness of December begins
You return home with flushed cheeks, full hearts, and the best kind of hunger And maybe that’s why it feels so special In a season that can be filled with indulgence and hurry, this tradition slows us down in all the right ways It helps us focus on what the holidays are truly about: gratitude, family, and the little moments that make life full
Local Turkey Trots in Southwest Florida
If you’re ready to start your own “run now, feast later” tradition, here are a few local Turkey Trots and family fun runs happening across Southwest Florida this year
Gobbler 5K, 10K and Half
Marathon in Naples
Labelle Turkey Trot 5K
Fort Myers 46th Annual Turkey Trot 5K
Thanksgiving Day 5K at Hertz Arena
Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity Turkey Trot 5K & Fun Walk
Babcock Ranch Harvest Hustle 5K
Whether it’s Thanksgiving morning or a quiet morning earlier in the month, I’ve found that the simple act of moving together as a family sets the perfect tone for the holidays It’s our reminder that gratitude isn’t just something we say, it’s something we practice, step by step.
