Let’sgobackto1991,when Philadelphiahadameaslesepidemic,due totworeligiousgroupswhodidnot immunize.Childrenwithmeasleshad highfever,arash,andredeyes.Some worsened,andninechildreninthe churchgroupandtheircommunitydied.

BecauseoftheMMRvaccine,measles waseradicatedintheU.S.bytheyear 2000.By2000,wehadachieved“herd immunity”,whichrequiresa95%immunizationrateinacommunity.However,at thismomentinMayof2025,thereare morethan1,000casesofmeaslesinthe U.S.Incertainareas,likethecurrentoutbreakinTexas,moreandmoreparents aredecliningordelayingtheMMRvaccine,sothosecommunitiesnolonger havethatherdimmunitythatprevents outbreaks.InTexas,NewMexicoand Oklahoma,mostcasesareinunvaccinatedchildren,andtherehavebeen3deaths sofar.Thehospitalizationrateinthatarea is13%sofar.

TheMMRvaccinehasundergonerigorousstudiesandtesting,andhasbeen provennottocauseautism,andtohave noassociationatallwithincreasedriskof autism.Therearetwodosesgivenat12 monthsandage4.Itcanbegivenas earlyas6monthsofagefortraveltoa high-riskarea.Themostcommonriskof theMMRvaccineisasorearm,fever, mildrash,andaverysmallriskofa febrileseizureorallergicreaction.The MMRvaccineisproventobemuchmuch saferthancontractingthemeaslesvirus.

Therearewellnessinfluencerson socialmediaclaimingtheopposite,minimizingtheriskofmeasles,claimingthat it’s“justarash”.Thetruthis,ifyourchild isinadaycareclasswith10childrenwho allcontractmeasles,andyoursisoneof the7withoutacomplication,thensure, maybeyourchildwillhaveamilder course(althoughitisstillamiserableillness).Buthistoricaldatashowsthat3out ofthose10willhaveacomplication,2of thosewillbehospitalized.Outofaclass of10.Thosearenotgoododds,andmy guessismostparentswouldnotrisktheir child’slifewiththoseodds.Theinfluencersareconvenientlyleavingoutthis

factandmisleadingmanyyoungparents. Nowonderpeopleareconfused.

Becauseofthis,theMMRvaccination rateofkindergartnersinLee,Charlotte, andCollierCountieshasdecreasedover thepastseveralyearstocloserto90%, notthe95%requiredforherdimmunity. Thatmeansifacaseappearsinyour child’sschool,itisgoingtospreadlike wildfiretotheunvaccinated.Andwhen thishappens,andeachdaycareand schoolhasseveralchildrenhospitalized andevenmorewithpneumonia,Ipredict thatthoseparentswhohaddelayedor declinedtheMMRvaccinewillberushingtheirchildtothepediatricianto receiveoneassoonastheycan.

Sofar,wehavenothadanycasesof measlesyetinSouthwestFlorida,andwe cankeepitthiswaybycontinuingtovaccinateourchildrentoprotectthem,and alsotoaimforourherdimmunityrateof 95%.Ifyouaretravelingthissummer,ask yourdoctorifyourchildshouldreceive theirMMRearly.Andasalways,askyour pediatriciananyquestionsyoumayhave.
