Thebackpacksarefinallyputaway. Thelunchboxesareempty.Andthe alarmclocks?Offuntilfurthernotice. School’sout,andsummerisofficiallyin session.

It’sthatsweet,fleetingtimeofyear whenourschedulesloosen,thesunstays uplonger,and—ifweletit—lifeslows downjustalittle.It’salsotheseason whenI’mremindedofsomethingsimple yetpowerful:I’veneveronceregretteda spontaneoustriptothebeachwithmy kids.

There’sjustsomethingaboutthebeach inSouthwestFlorida.Maybeit’sthewarm Gulfbreeze,orthewaythesaltyair seemstomeltawaystress.Maybeit’sthe factthatasimplebeachday—sometowels,sunscreen,snacks,andflip-flops— canturnintothebestmemoryofthe wholesummer.

Someofourmostmeaningful momentsasafamilyhaven’trequireda passportorpackeditinerary.Often,it’s theunexpectedsimplicityofalocal beachdaythatbecomesthemostmemorable.Watchingmykids—now11and 14—unplug,unwind,andtrulyenjoythe presentmomentissomethingItreasure deeply.Thesedays,thatoftenincludesa carfulloffriends,beachgames,and laughterechoingdowntheshoreline.
