Asparents,it’seasytogetsweptupin thepressuretomaketheholidaysmagical.WescrollthroughPinterestforthe perfectteachergift,signupforthecookie exchange,andsearchforthatonegiftour kidmentionedonceinpassing,asifthe successofChristmasmorningdependson howmuchwrappingpaperendsupon thefloor.

Buttheoldermykidsget,themoreI realizethatthebestpartsoftheseason havenothingtodowithwhat’sunderthe treeorhowlongChristmasmorninglasts. They’reinthesmallmoments.Driving aroundtolookatChristmaslightswith thetopoffmyJeep.Bakingcookiesthat neverquitelooklikethepicture. Snugglingupforanothermovienight withpopcornandfuzzysocks.Thoseare thememoriesthatstick.Theonesthat

buildthestoryourkidswilltellsomeday aboutwhatChristmasfeltlikeintheir home.

HereinSouthwestFlorida,wehave thegiftofaslowerpacethistimeofyear. Whilemostofthecountryisbundlingup andscrapingwindshields,we’reableto bikearoundtheneighborhood,headto thebeachinSantahats,orgrabice creamafterseeingtheChristmaslightsat Fishermen’sVillageorthetreeindowntownFortMyers.Theholidayslookalittle differenthere,andthat’spartofwhat makesthemsospecial.

Thisyear,I’mtryingsomethingnew. InsteadoffocusingonwhatIcanbuyfor mykids,I’mfocusingonwhatIcangive themthatdoesn’tcomeinabox.My time.Myattention.Mycalm.Myfull presence.Ihaverealizedthattheymay notaskforit,buttheyhopeforit.

Becauselet’sbehonest.Kidsdon’t needanotherthingthattakesupspacein theirroom.Whattheyreallycraveisus. Listeningtotheirstories,laughingattheir jokes,showingupforthesmallstuff,and makingspaceforslow,unhurriedtogetherness.

So,I’msayingyestofewershoppingtripsandmoreboardgames. Yestolate-nightcookiebaking, evenifitmeansmoremessthan perfection.Yestosayingnoto thingsthatdrainthejoyoutof December.

Asmallshiftthat’smadeabig differenceinourhomeiscreating whatIcallthe“PresenceList.” Insteadofwritingdownwhatthey want,wewritedownwhatwewant todotogether.Watchingthesunset atthebeach.DrivingtoNaplesfor hotcocoaandlights.Havinga Christmaspajamabreakfast-for-dinnernight.It’salistweactuallyget excitedtocheckoff,anditfillsour monthwithmoreconnectionthan clutter.
