A luxurious family stay at Ocean’s
Edge Resort & Marina near Key West By Mandy Carter Living in Southwest Florida, we have the opportunity to visit the Florida Keys often. For summer break, we spent a week exploring different areas with our last stop Key West. We wanted the last few days of our trip to be special, so picking the perfect hotel was key. An ocean front luxury hotel with outdoor activities would be an ideal option. Oceans Edge Resort & Marina looked like the perfect match. The location is not in Key West but Stock Island, the last island before entering Key West.It is a residential area, and the road looked different from how I imagined driving up to a luxury resort would look. But once we arrived at the end of the road and drove through the resort gated entrance, the scene changed immediately into a charming little garden. Lush greenery was everywhere.

The nautical-inspired rooms are spacious and all have furnished balconies with gorgeous ocean views. Our room was impressive in size and in comfort; sleeping our family of 5 perfectly. True luxury accommodations in The Keys. But you didn’t just get to look at the beautiful, calm, clear and shallow waters- it was the perfect place to enjoy kayaking with the kids and the resort provided two hours of complimentary usage per day of their paddle boards, kayaks and bikes. The resort offers a complimentary shuttle to Duval Street in Key West so that you do not have to worry with finding a parking spot. Surprisingly, there are many things to do in Key West with kids. Our absolute favorite thing we did though was the Ghosts and Gravestones Tour. It was entertaining for both kids and adults alike
and felt like a good value for the ticket price. For families who want to experience Key West but stay out of the nightlife scene then Ocean’s Edge Resort is the perfect spot. With six pools, a hotel restaurant and bar, yard games and water sports your entire family will be happy. Holiday Nights at Edison & Ford Estates On Friday, Nov. 24 at 6 p.m., Edison and Ford Winter Estates will kick off the 48th annual Holiday Nights celebration with a tree lighting ceremony. Guests will have an opportunity to participate in the countdown with Dave Elias from NBC-2 when the Christmas tree on the Ford property is lit with thousands of animated lights choreographed to holiday music. Female vocalists, the American Sirens, will perform shortly after the tree lighting. This year's theme is "Holidays on Wheels" and will incorporate many different types of wheels, especially car wheels because of the connection to Henry Ford, and also other wheels such as wagon wheels, bicycle tires, ships steering wheels, and train wheelsets. Holiday Nights will run nightly through Dec. 31 (will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas night). Guided Holiday Tradition Tours will be offered at 6 and 7 p.m. every night except opening night or visitors can choose to meander at their own pace on a self-guided tour. Inside-the-

Homes tours will be offered on Nov. 29, and Dec. 6, 13 and 20 at 6:30 p.m. for a special up-close look at the homes' decorated interiors. Additional lights with new technology are being installed this year. Throughout the property, many of the displays will have more lights than ever before. The palms will have animated "magic lights" that will change colors, and for the first time, the historic pond near the river pavilion will be lighted and there will be lights
on the waterfall that are animated and choreographed to music. The family-oriented event includes the Children's Tree Trail, which features 50 trees decorated with handmade ornaments from Lee County school children. On Sunday evenings from 6-8 p.m., Santa and Mrs. Claus will be visiting, and on Dec. 3 and 10, children can get their face painted (additional charge for face painting). Then, on Dec. 16 and 23, there will be a teddy bear booth, where children can make a bear (additional charge). Holiday Nights tickets for adults are $20, teens (13-19) are $10, children (6-12) are $2, and $10 for Edison Ford members. Guided Holiday Tradition Tours are $30 for adults, teens are $25, children $18, and $15 for Edison Ford members. Inside-the-Homes Holiday Tours are $50 per person. Lee County residents with identification will receive $5 off Holiday Nights admission on Monday nights (cannot be combined with other offers). 25th annual SW Florida Reading Festival welcomes bestselling authors to Fort Myers The Lee County Library System’s 25th annual Southwest Florida Reading Festival will host 30 bestselling authors at the March event. Authors for all ages are coming to Fort Myers to meet fans and showcase their books from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 2. The free event will be held on the outdoor campus of the Fort Myers Regional Library, 2450 First St. in downtown Fort Myers This outdoor celebration gives fans the opportunity to meet a diverse lineup of bestselling authors, get books signed, and discover the latest books and digital resources offered by the library. In addition, there will be storytelling, a book giveaway for children and teens, youth writing award presentations, arts and crafts and more. Food truck vendors will be at the event. “We are so excited to celebrate the festival’s 25th anniversary,” said festival coordinator Melissa Baker, who is the Lee County Library System’s manager of

programming and community outreach. “Throughout the years, the festival has attracted many authors at different stages in their careers.” The first Reading Festival in 2000 was held at Centennial Park. With more than 12,000 attendees, the event featured 28 authors including journalist Carl Hiaasen as the keynote speaker. An exclusive peek of the award-winning line-up of 2024 authors can be found by downloading the festival’s mobile app “SWFL ReadFest” from the App Store or Google Play. Festivalgoers
who downloaded the app for last year’s event will need an update to access the new content. In November, the festival website, Readfest.org, will be updated with information about the featured authors. Attendees wanting more access to this year’s festival authors can attend An Evening with the Authors on Friday, March 1. This signature fundraising event gives attendees time to mingle with the authors while enjoying dinner in an idyllic setting. An Evening with the Authors will be held at the historic Burroughs Home and Gardens on the Caloosahatchee River. Ticket availability will be announced soon. How to prevent getting the flu By Staci Van Winkle, M.D. What is the flu? The flu is a contagious respiratory infection that is caused by the influenza virus. Symptoms can include: fever, chills, dry cough, muscle aches, fatigue, and occasionally vomiting and diarrhea. A person with the flu may not have all of these symptoms.
These include: • Getting the flu vaccine • Wash hands frequently • Avoid touching eyes, mouth, and nose • Avoid close contact with those who are sick • If you are sick stay home so as to not infect others • Cover mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing • Eating healthy, getting plenty of rest & exercising regularly.
How can I get the flu? The influenza virus can be contracted when people come in contact with infected individuals (those with symptoms and those without symptoms) through droplets that contain the virus from coughing, sneezing and even talking. These infected droplets are inhaled through the mouth and nose. One can also get the infection by coming in contact with infected surfaces and objects and then touching the mouth, eyes, or nose. People with the flu may be infectious one day prior to symptoms starting and up to 5-7 days after symptoms begin.
Who should get the flu vaccine? The CDC recommends that those 6 months old and greater should get the flu vaccine. Why should I consider getting the flu vaccine? The flu infection can be unpredictable. Some people have a mild infection while others become very ill and unfortunately, in some cases, death may result even in people who were previously healthy. The influenza virus leaves a person susceptible to infection like pneumonia, can lead to dehydration, and can worsen chronic medical conditions (lung disease, heart disease, renal disease). As always please discuss your questions and concern with your physician. And consult with your physician before getting your flu vaccine. Have a safe and healthy flu season. . Dr. Ritrosky retires as county’s
longest practicing physician By Susie Bennett Icon. Tireless advocate. Compassionate doctor. Those are the words colleagues and patients use to describe Dr. John Ritrosky, Jr., a Fort Myers pediatrician, who is hanging up his stethoscope after 56 years of caring for Southwest Florida’s children. At age 86, he is retiring as the longest-practicing physician in Lee County and the only physician with 56 years of continuous service on the Lee Health medical staff. “WOW – it’s been a long time. When I came to Fort Myers in 1967, there were only four pediatricians in Lee County and only 77 doctors of any kind,” he said recently from his office at Physicians’ Primary Care of Southwest Florida. Today, the Lee County Medical Society has 2,296 physicians and 53 pediatricians and pediatric specialists. During his half century of service to Lee County, he started the Child Protection Team to provide care for physically abused children. The organization is now known as the Child Advocacy Center. A few years later, he became medical director of the local Children’s Medical Services team providing care for physically and mentally handicapped children. It was a role he held for 32 years until the State of Florida assumed responsibility for the team in 2019. Children with cleft lips and palates also have a friend in Dr. Ritrosky. He launched the Cleft Lip, Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies Program and wrote the first rules and regulations for the advisory council. Along the way, he has been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from both the Florida Medical Association and the Lee County Medical Society. It’s a career that almost didn’t happen. He was born and raised by his Ukrainian parents in Hudson, N.Y., a farming community where his uncle was a veterinarian. At the urging of his uncle, he applied to Cornell University, Department of Agriculture, and was accepted. “We spent a half day in a muddy field one day helping a cow with a prolapsed uterus. My uncle turned to me and said ‘you will be able to practice more medicine if you become a physician instead of a veterinarian,’” Dr. Ritrosky said. Dr. Ritrosky changed his major to biochemistry and went on to State University of New York at Syracuse to obtain his medical degree. After pediatric residency and two years in the Air Force at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, opportunity knocked in Fort Myers, where a four-physician group recently lost one of its pediatricians in a car accident. “They needed a pediatrician right away and my time in the Air Force was just coming to an end. I saw the outdoor life and fishing in Fort Myers and figured this was a great spot for me,” he says now. As the medical practice grew, Dr. Ritrosky became one of the founding partners of Physicians’ Primary Care of Southwest Florida in 1996. One of his partners was Dr. Larry Antonucci, now CEO of Lee Health. Medicine definitely runs in the Ritrosky family. In addition to his son, John, being a local plastic surgeon, his other son, Steven, is an anesthesiologist with Lee Health. Daughter Susan Beth Hill is an internal medicine physician in Orlando. What does Dr. Ritrosky plan to do in retirement? “Walk the beach, go fishing and re-landscape my Sanibel home that was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ian,” he says. November 2023 - 29

A holiday themed wine and paint night will be a ticketed offering on Thursday, Nov. 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. ‘Tis the season to get creative with one of SW Florida’s favorite local artists, Dharma Lefevre. This talented and quirky elf will demonstrate how to create a gorgeous wintery landscape. Each artist will be supplied with canvas, paint, brushes, and of course… wine. The popular Tree Raffle Drawing when all trees and gifts will be raffled off to the lucky winners is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 3 at 5 p.m. Except for the tree being donated to Golisano Children’s Hospital, all trees are valued at over $1,750 each and will be making spirits bright in their new locations.
