EARLY LEARNING COALITION OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

Apply today for 2022-23 Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten Looking for an enriching educational experience and a nurturing environment for preschoolers with teachers that offer a fun and creative classroom experience? Voluntary PreKindergarten programs are now accepting enrollment applications for the 20222023 school year. The program offers Voluntary Pre-kindergarten (VPK) for children who are 4 years old. The VPK program is a free prekindergarten program for 4 and 5-year-olds who reside in Florida. Participating children must be 4 years of age on or before Sept. 1. Parents can enroll their child in the state’s free, voluntary prekindergarten (VPK) education program that year or wait until the following year when their child is 5. The mission of the Early Learning Coalition of Southwest Florida is to provide early childhood education that will put children on track to be ready for school and success later in life. Voluntary Prekindergarten or VPK gives children a jump start by preparing them for school and enhancing their pre-reading, pre-math, language, and social skills. By developing the skills children need to become strong readers and students at an early age, children are more likely to be successful in school. VPK classrooms offer high-quality programs that include high literacy standards, developmentally appropriate curricula, manageable class sizes, and qualified teachers. The schoolFamily News

year program includes 540 hours of instructional time and begins in August. The summer program consists of 300 instructional hours and can begin as early as May 1. How can your child benefit from VPK? • The most important growth and development in the brain happens by the age of 5. • The early years are the learning years. A child’s ability to be attentive and to follow directions emerges in the early years. Structured early learning fosters these abilities for later success in school and in life. • VPK prepares children to be ready for school. Children who participate in high-quality early childhood education programs develop better language skills, score higher in school-readiness tests, and have better social skills and fewer behavioral problems once they enter school. They are also better prepared for kindergarten, especially in the areas of prereading, pre-math, and social skills. • VPK promotes a love of learning in children. VPK enhances what a child learns at home and instills a love of life-long learning. To apply for VPK, visit www.elcofswfl.org/voluntarypre-kindergarten-vpk/. There are several private childcare and public-school providers offering VPK programs across Collier, Hendry, Lee, and Glades counties. For information in Collier, call 239-2131136 and Lee, Hendry, and Glades counties call 239935-6100. July 2022 - 11

Screen for Scoliosis in kids By Sara Jo Foley, APRN Physicians’ Primary Care of Southwest Florida Most have heard of scoliosis before, or remember the clipboard measurements of their own youth! This month, we will remind everyone that Scoliosis should be assessed on our young people, most especially in those years where we feel like our kids grew overnight! Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine. All of us have a slight curvature of the spine that is considered normal, significant curves are monitored closely to reduce the risk of deformity or even curvature affecting the lungs and heart. 30 - July 2022

But those affected have genetics to thank for the curving of the spine while they grow; although we love to blame those heavy backpacks and video games these are unlikely to be the true cause of Scoliosis. (Posture is another story!) Several assessments are used when screening for Scoliosis but the forward bend test is most commonly used to assess curvature of the spine that could affect posture, back discomfort or deformity. Radiograph images are also useful for detection when noted on the physical assessment and determination if they are necessary will be made by the provider when assessing the child and their growth and approximate years left to grow. The years before the rapid growth of pubertal development and while they are growing are most important for screening for Scoliosis. So

please be sure your pre-teen and tween kiddos are being assessed for their well checks and are screened for Scoliosis! Sara Jo Foley, APRN, is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with Physicians’ Primary Care of Southwest Florida) with offices throughout Lee County. www.ppcswfl.com
