How to relieve teething stress By Sara Jo Foley, APRN Teething can be a stressful time for both parent and child. Some infants have no symptoms as teeth are erupting, others can be uncomfortable while the teeth break the surface. The most common symptoms reported is irritability, excessive drooling and gum irritation. Although many parents report their child feels warm, true fever is not generally associated with teething and should be evaluated for a more serious source than tooth eruption. For teething relief, management includes chewing on a cool (but 44 - April 2022

not frozen!) teething ring or toy with supervision, that are not coated in any sugary substance. Any teething device that wraps around baby’s neck or wrist is not recommended due to choking hazards, strangulation, injury to the mouth or infection. Over the counter teething tablets or gels have been discredited as being helpful and frequently contain harmful substances. Tylenol or Motrin are not routinely recommended for teething discomfort except in the most extreme circumstances. Massaging gums with a clean finger dipped in cool water prior to feeding could help reduce a breastfeeding baby from using mom as a teething reliever (Ouch!). Eruption of teeth tends to follow a known pattern with left and right teeth of either the upper or lower gums erupting at approximately the

same time. Most commonly, the central incisors are the first. Eruption averages between 6 - 10 months of age but is not considered delayed until the eruption has not occurred six months past the average age. For example, if a child has no teeth at 16 months then further evaluation is due. Once those cute little teeth have erupted, clean the teeth regularly with a soft bristle toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of toddler toothpaste with fluoride. Important to note, avoid allowing a child to fall asleep with a bottle, it prevents dental decay. Best Buddies Friendship Walk

at Miromar Outlets April 30

Through a school program that focuses on friendship, a male and female student are matched as a buddy pair - one of them has an intellectual or developmental disability and one of them doesn’t. Four years later, the boy has been out of school for two years and the girl is about to graduate high school. Their friendship has endured and become more like family. Best Buddies is the school program that was the catalyst that sparked the friendship mentioned above. The organization is excited to announce its annual Friendship Walk on April 30 at Miromar Outlets in Estero, which will support local area programs that provide oneto-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership

development and inclusive living. Best Buddies in Southwest Florida has nearly 300 (and counting) registered walkers who will be lacing up their shoes to #walkforchange, all working to surpass 2022’s fundraising goal of $80,000. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. with opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. The walk commences at 9 a.m. at Miromar Outlets near the WINK Playland. Following the Walk, Best Buddies will provide for a day of fun, food and friendship until noon. Jennifer Mackler is serving in a volunteer capacity as the chairman of the 2022 Walk.
