In today´s global knowledge economy, with mission-oriented research and innovation approaches becoming ever more prevalent, ground-breaking and socially relevant research require coordinated forms of collaboration within and between research teams with strong, complementary competencies. The ResearchTeam is well-established as the core driver when designing, securing funding, producing, and disseminating research.
For these reasons, the proficient Research Manager promotes excellence by developing a both inclusive and focused collaborative environment at team level. Many times, this implies the ability to support cooperation across academic disciplines, scientific traditions and particular skills held by ambitious employees from different cultural and national backgrounds.Added to this is the ability to lead upwards, downwards, inwards, sideways, and engaging external partners and possibilities. Furthermore, a proficient Research Manager must know the difference and thus the transition from researcher to Research Manager, including the transition from Research Manager for a small group of researchers at one's own university to leading large national and international research groups.
Trust and motivation are the decisive starting points for succeeding with managing research and research teams.Trust and motivation in relation to both personal, employee, team, and overall organizational performance.Trust is about Integrity, in the sense of trustworthiness; Competence, meaning that the individual and the team trust their own and others' abilities; Reliability in that you can count on delivery on time and with sufficient quality; and finally Concern, in the sense that the research manager is able to advance an environment in which there is a genuine interest in team members overall well-being, professional and personal development.
The skilled research manager ensures Cooperation and Communication, which, together with Collaboration and Coordination, makes up the four C´s of effective developmental processes, and is trained in evaluating core performances and ensure competence development at both individual and team level.Another important focus is supporting Researcher Career Development. This applies regardless of whether the research manager has formal staff responsibilities or not and is, among other things, linked to the important task of improving Gender Equality and working towards a Diverse Re-search Culture. Not least strong development of early career researchers will, in the coming years, be a much-needed competence at managerial levels to interest the most talented young academics in choosing the research path. "I can't remember the last time I attended such an educational, practical and well-prepared course day.Andreas' ability to present theory and then play the ball over so that we could link it to our practical work in our organizations was really good. The idea about letting us get involved and work with our own cases and build on the presented theory has really strengthened our opportunity for learning, and has given us a much better idea of how we can use agility actively in our organization. Andreas brings a fantastic energy in the course room, and managed to keep everyone's attention all day"
