LETTER FROM THE Chair

Dear Members & Friends,

Summer is here, and with it comes the easygoing rhythm that makes our coastal community shine. I’m delighted to share that the Chamber’s calendar is brimming with relaxed, come-as-you-are gatherings—Ribbon Cuttings, after-hours mixers, Lunch Mobs, and a family-friendly pool party sprinkled in for good measure.

These “lighter” events might seem informal, but don’t underestimate their impact. Conversations over iced tea or barbecue can spark ideas faster than any scheduled presentation. A quick chat in line for tacos could uncover a supplier you didn’t know you needed, a mentor you never thought to ask, or a customer who’s been looking for exactly what you offer. Every handshake, fist-bump, and shared laugh strengthens the connective tissue of our business network.

Here’s why I hope you’ll pencil in—or better yet, ink in—these dates:

Low-pressure networking. No name tags? No problem. The casual setting makes introductions effortless, especially for new members finding their footing.

Real-time feedback. Bounce a half-formed idea off peers who understand our local market. You’ll leave with insight you can apply Monday morning.

Increased visibility. Simply showing up keeps your brand front of mind. People prefer to do business with the folks they know and trust.

Community pride. When members gather, we model the collaboration that keeps La Porte and the Bayshore region vibrant and resilient.

You’ll find a full list of upcoming events on the Chamber website. Feel free to bring a colleague, a prospective member, or even the kids when it’s appropriate—these occasions are as much about community as commerce.

If you see me at an event, please say hello and share what’s on your mind. The Board can only serve you well if we know your ambitions and challenges. Until then, thank you for making our Chamber a catalyst for connection and growth.

Get to Know the Board

Each month we showcase a couple of our board directors giving you the opportunity to know our leadership team

Shannon Cotham

Shannon is a passionate animal lover and dedicated member of our board who looks forward to participating in community events as often as possible. When you don’t see her smiling face at Fischer’s Hardware, she can probably be found caring for her menagerie of 6 dogs, 3 cats, 3 horses, a donkey, and chickens. Her love for animals extends to rescuing and fostering dogs, making her home a haven for pets in need.

Shannon also enjoys updating her property and cycling, a sport she once aspired to pursue professionally. Her diverse interests and commitment to both her community and her animals make her a valued and dynamic presence on our board.

Scott Gernander

Scott comes to us from San Jacinto College where he has worked for twelve years. He enjoys the amazing leadership the college offers and helping to take care of all the students and employees.

As a child, Scott enjoyed watching and supporting the basketball team his father coached so much that he aspired to become an NBA superstar himself. To this day, the athletic elites and their coaches still inspire him. The accomplishments he is most proud of are his Coach of the Year awards for successful basketball coaching, following in his dad’s footsteps.

When he isn’t on the court, you might find him at one of his favorite Tex-Mex restaurants enjoying a margarita!

NEWS FROM THE Chamber of Commerce

Welcoming Excellence: Chamber Hosts Annual New Teacher Luncheon to Celebrate and Connect

At the end of Summer, as classrooms begin to stir with fresh ideas and sharpened pencils, the La PorteBayshore Chamber of Commerce proudly kicks off the school year with a tradition that embodies community spirit and educational excellence—the New Teacher Luncheon.

Held in collaboration with La Porte ISD, this annual event serves as a warm welcome for the district’s incoming educators and support staff. It’s more than just a lunch—it’s a heartfelt introduction to the people, businesses, and values that make La Porte a uniquely supportive place to live and work.

The luncheon brings together hundreds of local leaders, business owners, and educators under one roof, all united by a common goal: to show our appreciation for the critical role educators play in shaping the future of our community.

A Warm Welcome to New Faces

The heart of the event is, of course, our new teachers and staff. For many, it’s their first opportunity to get a feel for the spirit of La Porte—beyond the school walls. The Chamber ensures that each new hire is not only recognized, but also celebrated, with lunch, gift bags donated by local businesses, and a heartfelt introduction to the broader La Porte community.

Honoring Excellence

The event also includes a moment of well-earned recognition for some of La Porte ISD’s most outstanding educators from the previous school year. These honorees are applauded for their creativity, compassion, and commitment to student success, serving as an inspiration to new and returning faculty alike.

Business Meets Education

One of the most valuable aspects of the luncheon is the opportunity for our Chamber members to connect directly with district leadership and school staff. These connections often spark future partnerships—whether through sponsorships, mentorships, volunteer efforts, or educational programming—that strengthen the bond between our business community and our schools.

“Strong schools build strong communities, and strong communities support their schools,” states Angela Thatcher, Chair of the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce. “This luncheon is one of our favorite events of the year because it gives us a chance to say, ‘We see you, we appreciate you, and we’re here to support you.’”

A Special Thanks to Our Presenting Sponsor

The Chamber extends its deepest thanks to Gulf Coast Educators Federal Credit Union, our Presenting Sponsor, whose unwavering support of educators continues to shine year after year. As a long-standing advocate for the teaching profession and student success, GCEFCU’s dedication to this event helps ensure that every new educator is welcomed with warmth and appreciation. Their continued investment underscores the vital connection between financial institutions and educational empowerment in our community. Learn more about them at gcefcu.org or visit their booth during the luncheon.

As the new academic year begins, the Chamber is proud to continue its role as a bridge between local enterprise and educational excellence. To all the new faces in La Porte ISD: welcome. And to all who have made this tradition possible—thank you for investing in the future of our community.

If you want to promote your business and support our teachers, please drop off 125 items to the chamber office by July 25th!

Building Hope in La Porte: Chamber Highlights Bay Area Habitat for Humanity

The La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce recently hosted its Nonprofit Mixer, a signature event that brings together community-minded leaders and organizations for an evening of connection and purpose. This month’s featured nonprofit was Bay Area Habitat for Humanity, a group whose mission is nothing short of transformative—building homes, communities, and hope for local families.

Held in a welcoming, relaxed setting perfect for meaningful networking, guests enjoyed a delicious spread of sandwiches, hors d’oeuvres, and a selection of soft drinks, beer, and wine. But it was the message

Proud to support the neighborhood

at the heart of the evening that truly left a lasting impression. Representatives from Bay Area Habitat for Humanity shared inspiring stories about their work across the Bay Area, including the impactful process of building affordable housing alongside hardworking families in need. Attendees had the chance to hear Rocio’s story, a local La Porte resident whose journey to homeownership through the Habitat program was both moving and motivating. Her story reminded us all that home is more than just a structure—it’s a foundation for opportunity, dignity, and stability.

To honor and support their efforts, Chamber Board Chair Angela Thatcher proudly presented Bay Area

Habitat for Humanity with a $500 contribution on behalf of the Chamber. It was a small gesture compared to the scope of their mission, but one delivered with deep gratitude for the lives they are changing right here in our own backyard.

Bay Area Habitat for Humanity continues to address the urgent need for affordable housing, and their work wouldn’t be possible without the support of volunteers, donors, and advocates throughout the community. As La Porte grows, so too does the need for safe, stable housing—and Habitat’s work is more important than ever.

If you’re looking to make a lasting impact, consider getting involved with Bay Area Habitat for Humanity. Whether you swing a hammer, make a donation, or simply spread the word, your support helps build the kind of community we all want to live in—one where everyone has a place to call home.

Stay tuned for an upcoming volunteer opportunity, and thank you to everyone who helped make this evening such a success. Together, we’re building more than homes—we’re building hope.

Upcoming Event: State

of the Precinct with Commissioner Adrian Garcia Promises Key Insights and Regional Connections

The La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce is proud to join forces with four neighboring chambers to present a high-impact event that brings together business leaders, public officials, and community members from across the region: the State of the Precinct, featuring Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia.

Set against the stunning waterfront backdrop of the Hyatt Regency Baytown-Houston, this event promises both substance and scenery. Attendees will hear directly from Commissioner Garcia as he delivers timely and informative updates on county projects, infrastructure improvements, public safety initiatives, flood control efforts, and economic development plans that directly affect our communities.

Commissioner Garcia’s insight into the future of Precinct 2 will offer valuable context for anyone invested in the growth and success of the La Porte area and beyond. Whether you’re a business owner, resident, or civic leader, this is your chance to gain firsthand knowledge of what’s on the horizon—and how it will shape the communities we live and work in.

Stronger Together: A Regional Collaboration

This year’s State of the Precinct event is co-hosted by five area chambers of commerce, creating a unique opportunity for cross-city networking that strengthens regional partnerships. You’ll connect with professionals and officials from Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, Deer Park Chamber of Commerce, Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, South Belt - Ellington Chamber of Commerce, and yours truly, the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce, sharing perspectives and building relationships that extend far beyond city limits.

With so many communities coming together and such valuable insights on offer, this event is expected to sell out quickly. We encourage all members and guests to reserve their seats early and be part of this important regional conversation.

Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with decision-makers, gather important updates, and connect with leaders from throughout Precinct 2. Register now at bit.ly/LPC-SOTP25 We look forward to seeing you there!

NEWS FROM OURChamber Members

Port Houston announces $131M designated for Houston Ship Channel construction and maintenance

The Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority met for its regular monthly meeting.

Chairman Ric Campo opened the meeting with an update that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) released their FY25 workplan, which includes $33 million allocated to the Houston Ship Channel Expansion, known as Project 11, construction and $98 million to operations and maintenance to keep the Houston Ship Channel dredged.

“Thank you to everyone who pulled together to get this done, including our industry partners, customers, congressional delegation, and specifically Congressman Wesley Hunt and Congressman Brian Babin who

worked around the clock to make sure we got what we needed,” said Chairman Campo.

Port Houston reported strong volumes in April, which can be found in more detail via the press release issued on May 19. Operations reported nine blank sailings forecasted over the next six weeks at the container terminals. Despite this, Port Houston remains cautiously optimistic, noting that the number is significantly lower than during previous periods of market uncertainty, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was also announced that the USACE approved the federal Assumption of Maintenance (AOM) for Segment 1B of the Houston Ship Channel (Redfish Reef to Bayport Terminal), in addition to Segment 1C (Bayport to Barbours Cut Ship Channel), which was approved in 2022. This marks the successful conclusion of a nearly five-year group effort and with these approvals Port Houston will save a net present value of nearly $380 million over the next

50 years. The organization is on track to complete the dredging activities in Segment 1C by late Q2/early Q3 2025, completing the Port Houston-led portions of Project 11 dredging. Completion of Galveston Bay beneficial use features is scheduled for Q4 2025.

As it relates to maintenance at the public terminals, Port Houston commissioned 20 clean diesel yard tractors at Barbours Cut Terminal and Bayport Terminal, removing 20 outdated, less efficient tractors from service. The organization is also actively collaborating with TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation), Houston Pilots and PSEO (Port Security and Emergency Operations) to temporarily improve air draft markings on the Interstate 610 bridge.
