LETTER FROM THE Chair

Dear Members & Friends,

Spring is officially here, bringing fresh energy and exciting growth to our community. Just as the season symbolizes new beginnings, La Porte is buzzing with developments that reflect our continued progress. The soonto-be completed La Porte High School stadium stands as a testament to our city’s commitment to excellence, providing a toptier facility for students and the community to enjoy. Meanwhile, the groundbreaking of our new City Hall marks another step forward, ensuring that La Porte remains a great place to live, work, and do business.

At the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce, we believe in fostering that same spirit of growth for our local businesses. Through networking opportunities, educational programs, and advocacy efforts, we strive to equip our members with the tools they need to thrive.

Whether you’re a new entrepreneur or a seasoned business leader, the Chamber is here to support your journey and help you make the most of the opportunities ahead.

Thank you for being an essential part of our business community. As we embrace this season of renewal, we look forward to growing together and making La Porte an even stronger, more vibrant place for all.

Outstanding Businesses Recognized at the Annual Awards Banquet

The La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce recently hosted its highly anticipated Annual Awards Banquet, an evening dedicated to recognizing the outstanding individuals and businesses who have made a lasting impact on our community. During the banquet, we proudly honored those who have gone above and beyond in service, leadership, and dedication to La Porte. From local business achievements to acts of community service, each award recipient has played a vital role in shaping the success and spirit of our city.

The evening also marked a moment of transition as we recognized our retiring Executive Directors for their years of dedicated leadership and officially swore in

our incoming Directors, who are ready to continue the Chamber’s mission with energy and purpose.

Guests enjoyed a night filled with fresh, delicious seafood, lively camaraderie, a fun photo booth to capture memories, and exciting door prizes that added to the festive atmosphere.

2024 Non-Profit of the Year,

The Bridge Over Troubled Waters

In 2022 our Chamber Board approved the formation of a Non-Profit Committee. The purpose of the committee was to highlight the positive works of our then 26 Non-Profit members and to serve as a conduit to connect the non-profits to our generous members and community for any future projects that might need resources or volunteers.

Our great friend Tammie Nielson, with the Bridge Over Troubled Waters, graciously agreed to serve as committee chair and under her watch the number of non-profit members has grown to over 40. The committee meets every other month and regularly welcomes guest speakers to help educate and equip our members, they select and recognize a Non-Profit of the month and host quarterly mixers that spotlight a specific organization.

In 2023 the committee decided they would like to award a Non-Profit of the Year and solicited our Executive Board to select the winner from a list of the monthly award recipients.

We are honored to recognize tonight our

fearless committee leader Tammie Nielson and her team at The Bridge Over Troubled Waters as our 2024 Non-Profit of the Year.

Founded in 1978 and opening its doors to homeless women in 1979, The Bridge has grown into a vital domestic and sexual assault crisis center offering support, safety, and prevention services to those in need.

The Bridge also operates a 24/7 emergency Hotline, a 100-bed emergency shelter, offers temporary and long-term housing, and provides transportation assistance to help survivors regain stability. Their Destiny Village is an apartment complex that offers long-term housing for domestic violence survivors with disabilities, ensuring they have a secure and supportive place to rebuild their lives.

The Bridge is known for being a leader in the domestic violence movement, frequently offering new and innovative programs. Two of these include The Bridge for Kids and DVHRT-P – (Domestic Violence High Risk Team Pasadena). The DVHR Team was launched in 2020 in Pasadena and is a nationally recognized domestic violence homicide prevention framework that includes advocates from The Bridge, specially trained Pasadena police officers, members of the District Attorney’s Office and the Harris County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council.

The Bridge for Kids opened in February of 2024. It is the first of its kind, providing specialized services for children from birth to age 18. These services include therapy, counseling, childcare, and a safe space for teens to simply be teens. All services are free and

completely confidential. With over 45 years of service, The Bridge has had only three executive directors, a testament to the stability and visionary leadership that has shaped its growth and success. The Bridge is active in the community, offering training, support, and resources.

This well-deserved recognition is a testament to the outstanding dedication, hard work, and social impact that The Bridge Over Troubled Waters delivers. Their commitment to community service, philanthropy, and the betterment of society has truly set them apart within the nonprofit sector. This accolade reflects the significant contributions and positive change that their organization has facilitated, not only in the La Porte-Bayshore community but also in the lives of those being served.

La Porte ISD Students Showcase Business Ingenuity at Youth Expo

The La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with La Porte ISD, recently hosted the exciting Young Entrepreneur Expo, presented by OxyChem La Porte VCM. This event marked the culmination of weeks of hands-on mentoring and business coaching for La Porte ISD students, giving them a real-world glimpse into the life of a business owner.

Throughout the program, students worked alongside local business professionals, learning how to craft business plans, develop budgets, build marketing strategies, and pitch their ideas with confidence. The result was a showcase of creative, well-thought-out student-run businesses that wowed attendees with both innovation and entrepreneurial spirit.

The expo celebrated the talents and hard work of these young minds with special awards presented to standout participants:

▶ Young Entrepreneur of the Year: Danika Wendel, a 4th grader from Bayshore Elementary School, who impressed judges with her creativity, drive, and professionalism beyond her years.

▶ Innovation Award: Dazzle Den from James H. Baker Middle School, recognized for their unique and forward-thinking business concept.

NEWS FROM OURChamber Members

Bayou City Industrial Contractors LTD. Celebrates 30 Years of Business and the Recent Expansion of Their Pipe Fabrication Shop

Bayou City Industrial Contractors LTD. (BCI), a leading provider of Industrial Construction Services to clients across the country, is proud to announce the celebration of our 30th anniversary and the grand opening of our newly expanded pipe fabrication shop.

BCI was founded by Jeff and Nancy Bearden in 1995. Originally located in Houston, Jeff and Nancy relocated BCI’s headquarters to La Porte in 1997 to be closer to their customers positioned up and down the Houston Ship Channel. BCI’s first La Porte location was off South 8th street behind the old police station in roughly 800 SQFT office space with a small garage for a shop. In 1999 Jeff and Nancy relocated the business to BCI’s current location at 1606 South 16th Street. Today, with BCI’s recent expansion, the company occupies 5 acres of property with over 45,000 SQFT of office and shop space.

Bayou City Industrial Contractors

LTD. has earned a reputation for excellence, providing a wide range of construction and maintenance services to industries such as oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation and air separation. Over the years, the company has grown from a small operation into one of the region’s most trusted names in heavy industrial contracting, thanks to its commitment to safety, quality and customer satisfaction. Even after 30 years, BCI still does business with most of their original clientele.

To mark this significant anniversary milestone, Bayou City Industrial Contractors is unveiling a state-ofthe-art expansion to its pipe fabrication capabilities, a major step in the company’s continued growth. The new facility was completed late last year and was designed to meet the increasing demand for high-quality, pipe, process skid and modular fabri-

cation. BCI’s new facility is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and technology that promises to deliver enhanced capabilities and quality for the company and its clients. The new facility features cutting-edge technology such as automated welding and profiling capabilities, additional shop bay for alloy and carbon segregation, 20 welding stations and two 15-ton overhead cranes, positioning the company to better serve its customers while maintaining the high standards of craftsmanship that have made BCI a regional industry leader over the last three decades.

“We are incredibly proud to celebrate 30 years of success and to share the news of our expanded facilities and capabilities,” said Preston Bearden, Vice President Bayou City Industrial Contractors LTD. and 2024 past Chairman of the Board for La Porte Chamber of Commerce. “We have

always been prideful on providing top-tier industrial civil, mechanical and electrical construction services. This expansion reflects our commitment to continuously evolve and meet the needs of our clients in a rapidly changing industry. We’re excited about this expansion and the opportunities it brings for both our team and our clients. The investment in this state-of-the-art equipment ensures that we are better equipped to meet the needs of our customers while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety. This expansion enhances our ability to deliver exceptional results on every project, from one emergency pipe spool to piping and process modules for a whole new industrial facility.”

The new fabrication shop is home to the latest pipe cutting and welding equipment as well as material traceability and QA/QC software. BCI’s shop was designed to create seamless and quality solutions for a wide range of industries and clientele

such as End-Users/Owners, EPCs and Contractors. With the integration of automated welding, profiling equipment and digital technologies, the shop promises faster turnaround times, increased production and a higher level of consistency all at a competitive price.

“The addition of this state-of-theart facility is not only a win for our clients, but it also provides an opportunity to grow our team and invest in our workforce,” added Preston

Bearden. “We’re thrilled to offer our employees a world-class workspace that fosters innovation, safety, and growth.” At peak, BCI’s fabrication shop will work two shifts, creating work for 60 full-time personnel.

Bayou City Industrial Contractor LTD.’s expansion is already being met with positive feedback from clients and partners who are eager to see how the new facility will enhance the company’s already stellar reputation in the industry. BCI looks forward to continuing its growth and service to La Porte’s industrial market for many years to come, further strengthening its position as an integral part of the community and economy.

HELPS Mentoring: Changing Lives

One Lunch at a Time

Three years ago, the HELPS Mentoring Program was created by a

partnership between the La PorteBayshore Chamber of Commerce and LPISD to provide students with a consistent, caring presence— someone who listens, encourages, and reminds them that they matter.

Meeting once a week during lunch, mentors invest in students who may otherwise feel unseen.

Frank Nance, of Frank Nance State Farm, is the volunteer coordinator, recruiter and manager of the program, and works alongside over 50 other community members, business owners, LPISD employees, and now some LPHS seniors, to create these mentor opportunities on our LPISD campuses.

Today, the program serves 60 students, and the impact is clear (see sidebar).

For many, these simple conversations are life-changing. Students who once struggled with confidence now feel
