AUGUST
I am writing to you today with a deep sense of pride and admiration for the unwavering spirit our community has shown in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. The strength, resilience, and neighborly compassion displayed by each and every one of you during these trying times have truly exemplified what it means to be part of the La Porte-Bayshore family.
As we all know, Hurricane Beryl left behind significant challenges. Yet, in the face of adversity, our community did what we do best: we came together. From the moment the storm passed, neighbors were helping neighbors, businesses were opening their doors to provide essential services, and volunteers were working tirelessly to ensure that everyone had the support they needed.
I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the City of La Porte staff for their exceptional dedication and hard work throughout this ordeal. Their swift response, clear communication, and tireless efforts in the days leading up to and following the storm have been nothing short of heroic. They have truly gone above and beyond to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents, and for that, we are all profoundly grateful.
The resilience of our community is a testament to the strong bonds that unite us. In times of crisis, it is easy to see why La PorteBayshore is not just a place to live, but a place to call home. The acts of kindness, generosity, and solidarity we have witnessed over these past weeks are a shining example of the best in all of us.
As we continue the work of rebuilding and recovery, I encourage each of you to keep this spirit of cooperation and mutual support alive. Together, we will restore what was lost and emerge even stronger, more connected, and more committed to the well-being of our community.

Each month we showcase a couple of our board directors giving you the opportunity to know our leadership team
Dr. Jackson is a dedicated leader whose greatest joy is found in being a loving husband and father. With a heart for service, he brings that same commitment and care to our board, where he works tirelessly to support our community. He believes in leading by example, balancing family life with a passion for serving others.
Under his leadership, La Porte ISD continues to flourish as a nurturing environment where every child can succeed. Dr. Jackson brings both warmth and vision to our community, fostering relationships that inspire growth and achievement in students and staff alike.
As LPISD Supertintendent, his position on our board is an ex-officio seat, meaning he’s stuck with us for a long time!
Shannon is a passionate animal lover and dedicated member of our board who looks forward to participating in community events as often as possible. When you don’t see her smiling face at Fischer’s Hardware, she can probably be found caring for her menagerie of 6 dogs, 3 cats, 3 horses, a donkey, and chickens. Her love for animals extends to rescuing and fostering dogs, making her home a haven for pets in need.
Shannon also enjoys updating her property and cycling, a sport she once aspired to pursue professionally. Her diverse interests and commitment to both her community and her animals make her a valued and dynamic presence on our board.
We are pleased to announce our August Business of the Month, Randy Casey State Farm!
You may have noticed this good neighbor at several different events around town, showing support wherever they can. With a clear understanding of what people want from their insurance (he praises straightforward communication and dedicated service), Casey and his
team strive to deliver that belief every day, to every customer. They enjoy working closely with people on plans that help them protect what matters most, and their friendly group is always available to answer questions and offer support - whether you speak English, Spanish, or Vietnamese!

The La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce hosted a memorable event August 1st, bringing together the community to celebrate the outstanding achievements within the La Porte Independent School District. Held at the Bulldog Centre, the event served as a warm welcome for new teachers, a moment of recognition for our Teachers of the Year, and a showcase of the thriving local businesses that support our schools and community.
As the new school year approaches, we were thrilled to welcome the newest members of the La Porte ISD teaching staff. These passionate and dedicated educators were introduced to the community by their respective principals, where they were met with applause and a strong sense of encouragement. We are excited to see the fresh energy and ideas they will
bring to our classrooms, helping to shape the future of our students and our community.
Although several outstanding Teachers of the Year were attending a regional ceremony, we recognized those whose exceptional dedication and impact on students have not gone unnoticed. Each were celebrated for their remarkable contributions.
These exceptional educators have demonstrated excellence in teaching, inspiring not only their students but also their peers. Their unwavering commitment to education has left an indelible mark on the La Porte ISD community, and we are proud to recognize their achievements.
The event also provided an opportunity to highlight the local businesses that play a vital role in supporting our schools and community, such as Presenting Sponsor, Gulf Coast Educators Federal Credit Union. Several chamber members set up booths, offering attendees a chance to learn more about their products and services and handing out an assortment of goodies, much to the delight of the educators. These businesses, along with many others in our Chamber, exemplify the strong partnership between our local economy and our education system. Their support helps create an environment where both students and businesses can thrive.
As the event came to a close, there was a palpable
sense of optimism and excitement for the upcoming school year, partially credited to the Amazon Shopping Sprees sponsored by OxyChem La Porte VCM, slew of door prizes, and raffle gifts. The La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce is proud to be a part of this vibrant community, and we look forward to continuing our support of La Porte ISD as we work together to foster a bright future for our students, educators, and businesses alike.
Thank you to everyone who attended, and a special thank you to our sponsors and partners for making this celebration possible. Here’s to a successful and inspiring year ahead! #BeTheLegacy

The La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the upcoming “Doug Ditrich First Responders Golf Tournament & Chili Cookoff,” a special event recently renamed to honor the legacy of fallen La Porte Police Chief Doug Ditrich. Scheduled to take place September 19 at Bay Forest Golf Course, this event serves as a tribute to all local first responders, celebrating their dedication and service to our community.

Participants in the tournament can look forward to a day of friendly competition on the golf course, followed by a lively chili cook-off. The event will also feature raffle prizes, providing attendees with even more opportunities to engage and celebrate.

The HELPS Mentorship program was launched to help the La Porte community partner with LPISD and step into some of the gaps in specially selected students’ lives.
As a mentor, you will commit to consistent 30 minute meetings each week that will take place on campuses during your student’s lunch time. Each mentor is equipped with training classes to help familiarize and inform mentors.
Mentoring a child is vital as it provides guidance, stability, and support during a crucial time in their development. A mentor can offer a positive role model, helping the child build self-esteem, develop coping strategies, and make better life choices. This relationship fosters trust and opens pathways for the child to express feelings and fears that they might otherwise suppress. Mentors also offer consistency and encouragement, which can counterbalance negative influences and help the child envision a bright-
er future. By investing in our youth’s well-being, a mentor can profoundly impact their life trajectory.
To get started, learn more at https://www.lpisd. org/35536_3 and fill out the La Porte ISD Volunteer Application. All interested parties are encouraged to attend the Mentor Training scheduled on August 15.

This June, the La Porte Fire Department proudly announced the graduation of twelve new firefighters from the 2024 recruit class.
To graduate as a firefighter, a person must be able to excel academically, demonstrate exceptional teamwork and leadership skills, establish professional behavior, and successfully compete in and complete strenuous physical activities.
These courageous twelve made the decision to join “one of the more successful volunteer fire departments in the state” according to Fox26 News, with an average response time of 2 minutes and 40 seconds, four fire stations, more than 35,000 residents, 20 square miles of land, and two industrial districts in the City’s extra-territorial jurisdiction.
Chief Chris Pettis took a moment to answer a few questions about the new recruits and what they can expect.
continued on next page…
Q: Chief, what do you look forward to the most with a new graduating class?
I just enjoy meeting new folks committed to the job. Nothing makes me happier than seeing people from our community be successful in completing our program. It’s key to keeping our department’s traditions alive. I think it’s fantastic that individuals can volunteer to protect their community and transition into a career later if they choose to.
Q: What’s the best piece of advice you would give to a new firefighter?
Always remember why you started this journey. Being a firefighter, much less a volunteer firefighter, is a hard job. There are long days and sleepless nights, and they are going to do/see things that are out of the ordinary. It’s important to keep your why in focus.
Q: What would you tell a person who is starting a career in the fire service about serving the community?
Serving our community is a privilege. When that alarm sounds, the public trusts you to be their fire protection. They don’t ask if you’re career or volunteer, they expect a master of all trades, someone capable of helping them in their time of need. It’s your responsibility to be that person, ready and equipped to provide them with just that.
Q: What should a new firefighter do at the beginning of a shift? At the end of a shift? A new firefighter should strive to be the first to arrive and the last to leave. As a probationary fireman, it’s important to be present. Firefighting is a team effort. Getting to know your teammates, listening to their stories, and learning from them is vital to your success.
The 2024 spring graduates were: Dennis Andrejczak, Karl Briegel, Daniel Engles, Jacob Hernandez, Chris Hitchcock, Chet Lavelle, Joseph Lopez, Chandi Moore, Raul Nava, Juan Nunez, Alex Robles, and Garrison Zaborowski.
Assistant Chief Justin Crow agrees with the Chief’s comments and is also justifiably proud of these individuals.
“This is one of the largest graduating classes I’ve seen,” said Crow. “They are very motivated and we are proud to see them put their skills to use protecting our community.”
The ceremony was held at the Morgan’s Point Community Center, and it was a night for family and friends to gather to congratulate their loved ones on all the hard work that it took to complete the LPFD Fire Academy. The twelve graduates are now responding to calls for service and putting their training to use.
An unknown author once said that “All men are created equal, then a few become firemen.”
Congratulations to the twelve new La Porte Firefighters. It is an honor to have you working on behalf of our residents and to begin your fire service journey here. Successful recruits, we look forward to hearing about your teamwork, your accomplishments, your bravery, your leadership, your strength, and your perseverance.
