Dear Members & Friends,
One of the greatest privileges of being part of the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce is recognizing the incredible individuals and businesses that make our community thrive. As we step into 2025, we have two major events ahead that exemplify this commitment to celebrating greatness.
First, our Annual Awards Banquet on February 20 will shine a well-deserved spotlight on our Volunteer of the Year, Business of the Year, and Nonprofit of the Year—honoring those who dedicate their time, resources, and passion to bettering La Porte. Then, in March, we will gather for the State of the Cities Luncheon, where we will proudly present the inaugural J.B. Williamson Humanitarian Award, recognizing the first of many individuals whose selfless acts of service have left behind a legacy.
These awards are not just ceremonial; they are meaningful acknowledgments of dedication, hard work, and community spirit. And I want to emphasize—the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce is the only reputable
organization authorized to present these honors. When you see a Chamber award, you know it carries true distinction and integrity.
I encourage each of you to join us in these celebrations. Let’s take the time to reflect, appreciate, and be inspired by the remarkable individuals and businesses shaping our future.
Thank you for your continued support of the Chamber and our mission to uplift La Porte. I look forward to seeing you at these special events!
Warm regards,
Angie

Each month we showcase a couple of our board directors giving you the opportunity to know our leadership team
If you could describe James in one word, it could very well be ‘driven’, and it’s this drive that draws inspiration from those he encounters.
James joins us representing Sulzer Turbo Services, Inc., where he has worked for about 13 years, coinciding with his marriage to his wife, Nicole, with whom he shares two children with. James enjoys boating, beach days, and cycling when he’s not on the job. In fact, the accomplishment he’s most proud of is earning the title of Texas State Champion in cycling and bike racing!
We are very pleased to have such a driven individual serving on our Board of Directors through 2025.
We are delighted to introduce Sheree, one of our board directors who brings enthusiasm, curiosity, and a zest for learning to our team. Sheree’s love for expanding her understanding of the world is evident in everything she does, from engaging in DIY home improvement projects to exploring diverse cultures.
This open-mindedness and appreciation for diversity enhance her contributions to our board, as she brings fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the table.
Sheree’s friendly demeanor and genuine interest in others make her an invaluable asset to our team. We are fortunate to have her on our board, and we look forward to the exciting ideas and insights she will continue to bring to our organization.
Get ready, La Porte! The 69th Annual Sylvan Beach Festival is fast approaching, promising to be bigger and better than ever. Mark your calendars and prepare for an incredible day of entertainment, food, fun, and community celebration at this beloved event!
This year’s festival will feature an amazing lineup of musical talent, including Aaron Watson, the soulful sounds of Uncle Lucius, young up-and-comer Ty Myers, and the local favorite Big Jordan Band.
The festival wouldn’t be complete without its signature traditions. We begin Sylvan Beach Day with the annual parade, which you can register for online. There is no cost to participate. Applications for the Miss Sylvan Beach Pageant are now closed, and the Children’s Pageant applications will be available soon. Vendor and cook-off registration will also be available within the coming week, so continue to check the sylvanbeachfestival.com website for updates and applications.
Sponsorship opportunities are also still available, offering businesses the chance to showcase their support for the community while gaining valuable exposure during La Porte’s largest event! Last year, we estimate about 25,000 individuals joined us for this fun-filled day!
A big change affecting our locals this year is the ticket prices at the gate. Historically, we’ve offered discounted tickets for purchase at the festival gates, however we have restructured our ticketing prices. Early bird tickets are available online thru the month of February for only $12.50 each. During March ticket prices will be raised to $15, and tickets purchased at the gates will be $20 all day. Guests with a La Porte zip code on their ID will be granted discounted entry for $15 at the gate. Please help us get the word out on the new ticket breakdown.
We can’t wait to see you all at Sylvan Beach for this unforgettable celebration. Stay tuned for updates by following the Sylvan Beach Festival Facebook Page as we reveal more details. Let’s make this year’s event one to remember!
The La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to announce its Annual Awards Banquet, a time-honored celebration of excellence and community spirit. This prestigious event will take place on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at the iconic Monument Inn. The evening kicks off with a cash bar reception at 5:00 pm, providing an opportunity for networking and camaraderie as we prepare to honor some of the incredible individuals and organizations that make our community shine.
This year’s banquet will recognize the remarkable contributions of our Volunteer of the Year, Business of the Year, and Nonprofit of the Year—three awards that highlight the dedication, innovation, compassion, and servitude found within the La Porte-Bayshore community.
We’re looking forward to honoring our Volunteer of the Year, Amanda DeAlejandro, a devoted employee of Community First ER, who exemplifies the heart of volunteerism through her tireless efforts to support and uplift our community. She can be counted on time and time again to show up and put a smile on your face.
Our 2024 Business of the Year award will go to OxyChem La Porte VCM, a leader in the industry and a cornerstone of La Porte’s economy. OxyChem has set the standard for excellence in business and com-
munity involvement. For instance, their dedication to local schools and educators through the La Porte ISD Partners In Education Program not only provide immediate assistance, but for years to come.
The Bridge Over Troubled Waters, our 2024 Nonprofit of the Year, is an outstanding organization who has made a profound impact by providing critical resources and support to those in need and fostering hope in challenging times.
The Annual Awards Banquet is more than a celebration; it’s an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the past year and look forward to a future of continued growth and collaboration.
We invite you to join us for an evening of fine dining, heartfelt recognition, and inspiring stories. Seats are limited, so be sure to reserve your spot early. Let’s come together to honor those who make La Porte an exceptional place to live and work.

This event is more than just a marketplace—it’s an invaluable learning opportunity that helps shape the future business leaders of our community. Come out and show your support for these young entrepreneurs as they take their first steps into the world of business!

The City of La Porte is advancing its commitment to economic development and community revitalization through the Main Street Master Plan
This plan is designed to breathe new life into the historic Main Street district by improving infrastructure, supporting local businesses, and creating a welcoming environment for residents and visitors.
One of the key features of the plan is a new pedestrian plaza on 2nd Street, designed as a welcoming space for relaxation and social gatherings. By enhancing sidewalks, adding decorative lighting, and introducing more green spaces, we are creating a more walkable and enjoyable downtown. These enhancements are expected to increase foot traffic, benefiting local businesses through higher retail sales, restaurant visits, and overall economic activity.
The City has worked closely with business owners and community organizations to develop this plan, and public participation remains a priority as the planning process continues. Do you have ideas for improving Main Street? Are there features you would love to see included? Now is the time to share your feedback to help shape the future of Main Street and ensure it reflects the needs and interests of the community.

Port Houston is proud to announce a significant milestone in its commitment to equity and economic opportunity: More than $1.1 billion has been awarded in contracts with Small, Minority, and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (S/MWBEs).
This achievement reflects the collective impact of Port Houston’s Small Business Development Program, established in 2002, and the Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) Program, launched in July 2021.
“This monumental milestone represents more than just dollars awarded—it’s a testament to Port Houston’s dedication to supporting jobs and creating opportunities for small and diverse businesses,” said Charlie Jenkins, CEO at Port Houston. “These programs are designed to build capacity, foster inclusivity, and empower businesses to succeed and grow.”
Port Houston’s Business Equity Program has evolved through years of strategic planning and collaborative efforts across the organization. This initiative provides resources, mentorship, and access to procurement opportunities, helping businesses thrive. By fueling collaboration and

“Our commitment to expanding opportunities for S/ MWBEs remains steadfast,” said Carlecia Wright, Port Houston’s Chief Business Equity Officer. “In 2024 alone, we awarded $181.1 million to S/MWBEs, building on more than two decades of commitment to economic opportunity. January is School Board Recognition Month and National Mentoring Month---a perfect opportunity to thank these two groups of volunteers for their service to La Porte ISD!
La Porte ISD joins other districts across the state in celebrating the men and women who volunteer their time as members of the Board of Trustees. “Leadership for Tomorrow’s Texas” is the theme for 2025, demonstrating how local trustees continue to lead the way for Texas public schools. While we appreciate the efforts of our elected school board officials throughout the year, January is set aside as a special time for communities to celebrate their
contributions and thank them for caring so much about the future of every child enrolled in La Porte ISD.
National Mentoring Month provides us with the chance to recognize the many community partners who serve as mentors through the HELPS (Help Empower La Porte Students) mentoring program. More than 50 individuals devote 30 minutes each week to meeting with their mentees, building positive adult-child relationships through informal activities such as board games, arts and crafts, sports and more. The program began in 2022 as a project of the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce and La Porte ISD, starting at the district’s elementary schools; it has since expanded to the James H. Baker Sixth Grade Campus, Lomax Junior High, La Porte Junior High and La Porte High School. We are so grateful to our mentors for their generous donation of time and their devout commitment to our students.
As you’ll see in this issue of Community Connections, many other individuals, businesses and organizations help to make a positive impact on La Porte ISD students as well. Thank you to ALL of our community volunteers!

Beginning Monday, February 10, 2025, the City of La Porte will enforce a new law requiring all mobile food vendors—including food trucks, food carts, concession carts, and concession trailers—to obtain a permit before operating within city limits. This regulation ensures compliance with updated health and safety standards.
To allow vendors time to comply, city officials have provided a 10-day grace period following the law’s effective date of February 1, 2025. Any vendor operating without a valid permit after this period may face shutdown by Code Enforcement.
The ordinance, approved by the La Porte City Council and Mayor Rick Helton on December 9, 2024, was introduced to regulate mobile food vendors and ensure safe and legal operations. It establishes clear guidelines for food safety, proper
waste disposal, and business practices, reducing risks associated with unregulated vendors.
The City of La Porte has created a guide and information packet to help vendors navigate the new regulations. Food truck operators can apply for a permit through the City’s online permitting portal:
La Porte Permitting Portal View Information Packet
Operating with an expired permit may result in enforcement actions, including fines or shutdowns.
Failure to obtain the required permit may result in fines of up to $2,000 per violation and a potential shutdown of operations. Vendors must submit all required documents and receive approval before conducting business. Vendors with existing permits must renew them every 90 days.
The City of La Porte’s Permits and Inspections Division is available to
assist vendors with any questions regarding the application process. Business owners can contact the department at (281) 470-5073 or email Permits@laportetx.gov.
The City of La Porte is taking steps to restore the Sylvan Beach Park Pier, which sustained significant damage during Hurricane Beryl on July 8, 2024. The La Porte City Council approved a contract with Cobb Fendley and Associates for professional engineering services to design the pier’s rehabilitation during their meeting on Monday, January 27, 2025. The $106,838 contract covers structural analysis, geotechnical studies, ADA compliance, and permitting.
A joint review by the City of La Porte and Harris County Precinct 2 determined that while the pier’s substructure can be partially salvaged, major repairs are required. The

1,100-foot pier needs a full replacement of its wood deck, a complete reconstruction of the T-head, and repairs or replacements for its railings.
To enhance durability against future storms, the new pier will feature ThruFlow decking or a similar material, which allows water to pass through and reduces storm damage.
The City will fund the design phase through an escrow account established for pier maintenance, while additional funding sources for reconstruction are still being identified. The estimated reconstruction cost is $1.56 million, which exceeds currently available funds. During the design phase, the City and Harris County will continue working together to finalize reconstruction funding.
Sylvan Beach Park is a cherished community destination on Galveston Bay, offering a playground, boat ramp, pavilion, and fishing pier. La Porte’s Mayor Rick Helton and City Council members are committed to reopening the pier as soon as possible, ensuring residents and visitors can once again enjoy this vital waterfront amenity.
