Altamira has regular ship services to international destinations and good connections by road and rail with the USA and key centers in Mexico. Above all, Altamira is a spacious port – the biggest in Mexico by far – with deepwater channels and berths and ample room for future development. With its prime location right on the Gulf of Mexico, the port offers ready access for shipping. Channels and berths are entirely manmade, with no locks to negotiate and no tidal problems. Altamira is a 24-hour port, so ships can arrive and depart at a time best suited to their own schedules. Most of the ship terminals are rail linked and there are good inland services by road and rail to major commercial centers in Mexico.

The port is equipped to handle a wide range of specialized and general cargo. There are 11 ship terminals with a total of 17 berths. The latest facility is the construction yard for the fabrication of oil platforms. Most of the terminals can accommodate ships of up to 80,000 dwt and 300 meters in length. There are two privately operated multipurpose terminals for breakbulk and containers. Container handling capacity is being increased thanks to a project by the port authority to extend the container quays by 300 meters. Other private terminals have dedicated facilities for handling and storage of dry and liquid bulks.
