IN-CHIEF

WHEN I STEPPED INTO THIS ROLE at Lake Norman Woman Magazine, I didn’t realize just how many incredible women lived right here in our community. I was unprepared—under the best of circumstances—to meet, interview, and learn from so many diverse, strong, and inspiring women.

This year, I’ve had the privilege of knowing women like Charlisa Herriott, whose wisdom I could absorb for hours; Annie Hanson, who taught me what true strength looks like as a woman, mom, and business owner; Katie Stankiewicz, my cohost on the Lake Norman Woman Podcast, who helped me learn not to sweat the small stuff and to be myself in all circumstances; Janet Patterson, a dear soul and one of my greatest cheerleaders; and Kara Perrault, a young business owner who constantly puts herself out there. And countless others whose stories have filled these pages and touched my heart.

This year has been remarkable. We more than doubled our staff, hosted three Ladies Who Lunch events, celebrated our first Woman of the Year Gala, and launched the Lake Norman Woman Podcast. We highlighted moms and mentors, honored teachers, cancer survivors, women veterans—and now, in our December issue, we explore local charities and holiday traditions that bind us together.

But what has been most valuable to me isn’t the accolades or the expansions—it’s the connections. Sitting face-to-face with women, hearing their stories of joy, fear, triumph, and grief. Because at the heart of this magazine— and everything we do—is this mission: to share stories, to remind you that you are not alone in your career, your motherhood, your grief or your joy. We walk together.

Christmas Magic

When my oldest was 2, I rewrapped all his gifts in green paper with red stockings so he could tell which ones were his. Ever since, each family member has their own wrapping paper—a simple, organic tradition that’s become uniquely ours. Even now, my grown kids still look for “their paper” under the tree.

Authentic Advent

Each year, I make homemade Advent calendars for my kids—a tradition I brought from my German upbringing, where the Advent season is peaceful and full of meaning. For the past decade, I’ve hung feather cloud calendars I crafted myself, filling them with small surprises the night before December 1st. Even though my kids are older now, they still look forward to them each year—a tradition I hope they’ll one day continue.

Games for Grandpa

Christmas morning starts with French toast, eggs, and bacon before gifts are opened. After losing my grandfather on Christmas Eve in 2012, I began a new tradition—playing board games together. It started with Speak Out, and the laughter it brought helped heal our hearts. Now, a new game each year keeps his spirit and our family joy alive.

FALL & WINTER HOME PREPARATION

CLEAN OUT YOUR GUTTERS: Clogged gutters that cannot drain can lead to water damage by flowing into your foundation, siding, walls, and ceilings. Coverage for this type of water damage is not typically covered by your Homeowner’s insurance.

CHECK YOUR HEATING SYSTEM: Clean the area around the unit and clean the outside coils with a mild detergent and be sure to replace your air filters. If you suspect any issues, have your heating system professionally serviced.

TRIM DEAD TREE LIMBS: High winds or the weight of snow and ice can cause large tree branches or entire trees to fall. This could result in significant damage to your roof, deck, or windows, or with a tree lying in your yard. While your homeowner’s policy will cover if a live tree falls on your home, it typically will not cover if the tree is dead.

problems, such as snowmelt seeping into your roof, walls, and ceilings, or the less likely incident, though still possible, an actual roof collapse. (704) 875-3060 foglegroup.com

WINTERIZE YOUR PIPES: If your interior pipes are vulnerable, when water freezes and expands, it could end up bursting your pipes. This could lead to water leaking, spraying, or even flooding into your home. You could end up with damage to your personal property and structural damage to your home. Insulate the pipes, seal air leaks, and use heat tapes to help prevent bursting.

December is the time for giving and there are lots of things to do right here in Lake Norman that will get you in the spirit. Here are a few local charities where you can get out, help out, and give back this holiday season:

Dedicated to helping people achieve lasting economic stability in the Lake Norman area, the Ada Jenkins Center prioritizes supporting neighbors in need. As a onestop resource hub, it provides wrap-around services tailored to each household—offering afterschool education

K-5, financial assistance, case management, homeless street outreach, a food pantry, free tax preparation, and healthy cooking classes. AJC’s newest program adds asset building workshops in credit and homeownership.

The Affordable Senior Housing Foundation is dedicated to empowering seniors through high-quality, affordable assisted living. Founded with compassion and purpose, ASHF serves older adults in underserved rural and urban communities, especially those caught in the Medicaid gap or living on fixed incomes. By creating vibrant, supportive environments, they ensure seniors can age with dignity and remain in familiar surroundings. Their mission is simple yet powerful: to make compassionate, comprehensive care accessible to every senior, regardless of financial circumstances. Visit (www.ashf.org) to learn more.

When creating The Serve Pickleball + Kitchen concept, Jack and Robin Salzman wanted to continue the charitable support of the community they built during their time as business owners in Lake Norman, which has evolved into Serve for a Cause. Each quarter, The Serve will host a fundraising tournament for three selected local nonprofits. There will also be volunteer opportunities for those interested in giving back. Organizations may apply via TheServePickleball. com under “Community.”

With a heart for children and a vision for change, Marilyn Heyward, founder of STeAM Children’s Studios, has brought hope, joy, and learning to over 600 families across the Carolinas.

Through her free community givebacks, children discover the wonder of science, technology, engineering, art, and math—often for the very first time. “Every event is about more than learning,” Marilyn shares. “It’s about giving families a moment of joy, connection, and possibility.” Her goal is to open a dedicated STeAM learning facility where children can explore, create, and grow year-round. MEET ONE HEALTH FAMILY MEDICINE PHYSICIAN,

Dr. Barbara Meyer

One Health Family Medicine & Urgent Care Birkdale 16645 Birkdale Commons Parkway Suite 100a Huntersville NC 28078 (704) 801-7390

WHEN DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU WANTED TO BECOME A PHYSICIAN?

Growing up, I wanted to be a teacher like my mother, a Special Education teacher. I loved being around children, whether babysitting or working as a camp counselor. My focus changed during my sophomore year of high school when I wrote an English paper on epilepsy that won 3rd place in a science writing contest. I found the research fascinating and shifted my path toward medicine—a surprising start to my medical journey.

WAS THERE A MOMENT THAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A PHYSICIAN?

During my senior year, I shadowed a family friend who was an orthopedist. While on call one weekend, he performed emergency surgery on a 10-yearold who fractured her elbow. I held her hand to keep her calm, and that moment solidified my desire to become a pediatrician.

WHAT DREW YOU TO FAMILY MEDICINE?

In my third year of medical school, I enjoyed every rotation—pediatrics, OB, psychiatry, surgery, and adult medicine. My final rotation was Family Medicine, where I worked with a country physician who treated everyone with kindness and respect. He made house calls, worked in every patient, and called medicine his “passion, not his job.” His joy in caring for others inspired me to follow the same path.

WHAT HAS BEEN A HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER?

After more than thirty years in practice, the greatest reward has been caring for multiple generations within families. Seeing former pediatric patients return as parents with their own children is incredibly fulfilling. I also love mentoring medical, NP, and PA students—many have chosen Family Medicine after shadowing in our office.

WHAT ARE THE MOST REWARDING ASPECTS OF BEING A PHYSICIAN?

I ask each new patient what brings them joy or peace—it helps me understand what matters most to them. If they lack an outlet for contentment, I try to help them find one. Most importantly, I want every patient to feel heard and supported, especially during stressful times.

HOW DID YOU BECOME A PART OF ONE HEALTH?

I’ve been with this amazing group for over 20 years. We formed One Health more than five years ago in partnership with Advocate Health. The group continues to grow across Charlotte and Winston-Salem. I’ve worked in several Lake Norman offices, each special because of the people.

WHAT MAKES ONE HEALTH UNIQUE?

One Health is a physician-led group of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and OB/GYN providers dedicated to patient-centered, evidencebased care. Many offices offer urgent care and extended hours. Our team includes providers with expertise in sports medicine, nutrition, lifestyle management, mental health, and chronic illness care—resources that are invaluable to our patients.

TELL US ABOUT THE CULTURE AT ONE HEALTH.

We prioritize the patient experience, strive to provide the best care at minimal cost, and welcome all patients. We also care deeply for our staff and each other. The camaraderie in our offices is palpable— and our patients notice it.

HOW HAS MEDICINE CHANGED SINCE YOU BEGAN PRACTICING?

Insurance coverage has become a major challenge, but our skilled staff help patients navigate it. The shift to electronic medical records has greatly improved communication and record accessibility, especially when patients move between offices.

WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED IN A CHANGING HEALTHCARE ENVIRONMENT?

My motivation comes from my colleagues, staff, and patients. Our team is exceptional, and our physician leaders provide strong guidance and support through constant change.

WHY SHOULD PATIENTS TRUST YOU AND YOUR COLLEAGUES WITH THEIR CARE?

It’s an honor to guide patients through their healthcare journeys. My colleagues are outstanding—dedicated, compassionate, and supportive. Patients feel comfortable seeing any One Health provider, and I’d trust any of them with my own family’s care.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN BALANCE OUTSIDE MEDICINE?

I’ve practiced in Huntersville for over thirty years since completing my Family Medicine residency in Charlotte. My greatest joy is my family—my husband and three grown sons (25, 23, and 20), who affectionately call me “a little bit extra.” I’m grateful for a flexible schedule that allows me to help care for my parents in Washington, D.C. Volunteering weekly as a firstgrade classroom assistant brings me happiness, as do traveling, photography, dancing, and running (slowly). And I still look forward to Mondays ...

INTUITION, INNOVATION, & EMPOWERMENT

THE ROAD TO MEDICINE wasn’t a straight line for Dr. Cammy Benton, founder of Benton Integrative Medicine in Huntersville. It was a winding path lit by curiosity, tested by adversity, and guided by intuition. Life handed her more than a few challenges along the way, each one deepening her empathy and sharpening her ability to heal. Those experiences became her greatest teachers, equipping her to meet her patients not just with medical knowledge, but with genuine understanding.

Early in her career, working in a traditional group practice, she quickly realized that something was missing. Prescribing medications to manage symptoms felt incomplete to Dr. Benton, especially as the list of prescriptions grew—often used to counteract side effects of other medications, frustrating her even further.

THROUGH HER WORK, SHE CONTINUES TO HONOR BOTH THE ART AND THE SCIENCE OF HEALING, REMINDING US THAT TRUE WELLNESS BEGINS WHEN MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT MOVE IN BALANCE.

Seeking a deeper understanding of health, she earned a certification in functional medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. This approach uncovers the root causes of illness, considers the whole person, and applies the latest scientific insights to develop personalized solutions. She has also studied Ayurveda, the ancient 4,000-year-old system from India, which similarly emphasizes holistic balance across the body’s systems to promote overall wellness.

From an early age, Dr. Benton’s curiosity about the human body set her apart. While other children browsed libraries and book fairs for adventures or mysteries, she was drawn to books about kids living with scoliosis, cancer, and eating disorders. “Those were always the ones I reached for,” she says with a smile. “It’s been fun to see how that curiosity has grown and evolved through my life.”

Her decision to apply to medical school came during a quiet Thursday night in November of her junior year in college. It was like God said, “this is what you’re going to do,” she reflects. Encouraged by a supportive physiology professor, Dr. Charles Ginghas, she overcame doubt and skepticism from others. “My chemistry advisor told me I had no chance of ever getting into medical school. Fortunately, I had another professor who disagreed: ‘Cammy, this is what you are meant to do, and I believe in you,’ he told me, and he has stayed in touch with me all these years.”

Dr. Benton’s own experiences in traditional medicine deeply influenced her as well. She noticed a growing disconnect between conventional medical practice and what patients truly needed. When patients came in with

complex symptoms or information they’d researched themselves, many physicians dismissed their concerns as “too much Dr. Google.” Dr. Benton recognized that the real problem wasn’t overinformed patients but rather the medical community’s limited understanding of emerging health issues. Wanting to bridge that gap, she studied natural medicine alongside conventional methods, seeking a more holistic, compassionate, and effective way to help her patients feel safe, seen, and understood.

Being a mother further reinforced her approach. Recalling from her own childhood, she shares: “We didn’t have money growing up ... my mom was amazing, but she didn’t have anyone to support her. When I was 6 years old, I had a high fever. There was no phone, no car. She was terrified. Reflecting on that, I realized a mother should know how to manage a fever or other common childhood ailments without fear. My goal was always to teach people how to care for themselves and their families. That’s what being a doctor means to me.”

Dr. Benton is a mother of four, ages 12 to 17. She describes her children’s “medical misadventures” as gifts that guided her to integrate functional medicine, homeopathy, and nutritional strategies with conventional medicine. “It really led to the opening of my primary care business,” she smiles. “It taught me how to combine medical training with a mom’s intuition.”

Her struggles with corporate medicine illuminated systemic challenges and the importance of work-life balance for Dr. Benton. “I was working 55-60 hours a week with a busy homelife,” she explains. “The corporate medical system threatened my bonuses and pay prior

to each childbirth, so I had to go back to work four to six weeks postpartum. That robbed me of critical time with my children. That’s when I realized I needed to do something different.” And in 2016, she did just that.

“I decided to start my own practice and began advertising six months in advance. Within two months, my calendar was filled! People really DO want something different, and that showed itself to me immediately. People want a safe place to be. They want options. They don’t want to be told what to do. The future of medicine will incorporate ancient wisdom with modern medicine. It’s not either/or, it’s a combination. Understanding the body’s interaction with the world, cycles, nature, and each other is critical. My goal is to teach people to become independent of the medical system, and I really focus on women since they tend to be the

‘medicine women’ of their homes. I want them to empower themselves and pass that along to their kids.”

Despite her many accomplishments, Dr. Benton remains deeply grounded. She remembers her humble beginnings and the winding path that shaped both her character and her calling. Each challenge, she believes, carried a lesson that strengthened her faith and refined her purpose. “I had to swim hard upstream,” she says, “but there were angels guiding me. Those hard-won lessons now serve as the heart of my mission ... transforming adversity into empathy and using my journey to help others find healing and hope.”

Dr. Benton’s story is a testament to the power of intuition, education, courage, and empowerment working in harmony. In blending compassion with science and placing trust back into the hands of her patients, she’s redefining what modern medicine can be—personal, proactive, and profoundly human. Through her work, she continues to honor both the art and the science of healing, reminding us that true wellness begins when mind, body, and spirit move in balance.

Today, Benton Integrative Medicine continues to expand its reach with a renewed focus on whole-person wellness. Through her concierge and direct primary care model, Dr. Benton offers patients longer visits, greater access, and truly personalized attention—an experience rarely found in modern healthcare. Her Functional Medicine programs address the root causes of illness, helping patients reclaim balance and vitality rather than simply manage symptoms. In collaboration with her husband, Kyle Hall, Dr. Benton is also developing a Men’s Vitality Lounge, dedicated to optimizing men’s hormonal and sexual health. Together, they share a vision that when men are strong, healthy, and confident, their families thrive—and women are freer to embody their most divine feminine expression. Classic cocktails are reimagined with a modern edge, while the curated spirit list invites guests to linger a little longer, toasting to the year’s end with something smooth and memorable.

For those seeking something more intimate, Paloma’s monthly Dinner Club offers a chance to step deeper into Chef Woolf’s creative world. Each event features a multi-course menu paired with spirits or wines that complement the evening’s theme.

Beyond the food and drink, it’s the atmosphere that makes Paloma shine during the holidays as well. Chef Jacob Woolf believes that the best holiday meals are built around balance—rich, comforting dishes paired with something bright to lift the palate. His go-to festive pairing? A well-seared steak or roasted duck alongside a bourbon cocktail with citrus or spice notes. “It’s all about harmony,” he says. “The right flavors can turn an ordinary dinner into a celebration.”

WHOLE BODY WELLNESS

Repair Your Aging Body & Failing Mind

ARE YOU 60 OR OLDER? Have you noticed a deterioration in your short-term memory manifest as losing things often (where are my keys), forgetting to go to important events or appointments, difficulty coming up with words, and staying focused?

Cognitive function peeks around the age of 30 … from there it is a slow steady decline that could eventually lead to dementia or Alzheimer's. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) can help—here’s how:

BODY TISSUE LACK OF OXYGEN

To quote Dr. Shai Efrati, a renowned physician known for his pioneering work in hyperbaric oxygen therapy, “The occlusion of small blood vessels (atherosclerosis), like the occlusions which may develop in the pipes of an ‘aging’ home, is a dominant element in the human aging process. We found that HBOT induced a significant increase in brain blood flow, which correlated with cognitive improvement. We can conjecture that similar beneficial effects of HBOT can be induced in other organs of the aging body.” HBOT addresses this by stimulating the growth of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) to re-establish blood flow to the tissue not getting enough oxygen, in the same way it stimulates new blood vessel growth to repair non-healing diabetic wounds.

This safe, painless treatment boosts blood oxygen up to 15-fold, promoting healing throughout the body and brain.

STEM CELL EXHAUSTION

As we go through life, tissue and organs become damaged (My knee hurts or my back hurts.). Stem cells are produced by our body to repair that damaged tissue. The regenerative process is much more efficient in young people because of higher numbers and more efficient stem cells. As we age, the number of stem cells decreases along with their function because of mitochondrial dysfunction. Aging is also a failure to regenerate the damage due to a decrease in the number of stem cells. HBOT induces stem cell mobilization from the bone marrow to the blood stream at up to an 8-fold increase; it also induces the differentiation of stem cells to the different tissues such as heart, muscle, kidney, and brain to aid in their repair.

TELOMERE LENGTHENING AND DECREASE IN SENESCENT CELLS

As we age, the caps on the ends of the chromosomes shorten. This has been considered the holy grail of the biology of aging. Senescent cells are old malfunctioning cells that harm the body. In 2020, Dr. Efrati’s group released a peer-reviewed study that showed for the first time that telomere length could be increased by over 20% and senescent cells decreased up to 37%. Their protocol consisted of 60 HBOT treatments 5 days per week for 12 weeks. Patients following this protocol report improvement in short term memory, attention, information processing speed, and executive functions.

MITOCHONDRIA DYSFUNCTION

The primary generators of cellular energy are the mitochondria located in every cell. Their numbers and functioning efficiency decrease with age. HBOT has shown in several studies that it can improve and restore the decreased mitochondrial function.

HBOT is a medical treatment administered in a chamber in which the patient breathes 100% oxygen under pressure. This treatment produces up to a 15-fold increase in blood oxygen concentration causing oxygen to diffuse into every cell in the body. This stimulates healing in all tissue, including the brain. It is an extremely safe, non-invasive, painless therapy.

GRAY DIVORCE:

RECLAIMING YOURSELF AFTER 50

DIVORCE AFTER 50— often called gray divorce—is one of the fastest-growing life transitions among women today. While ending a marriage later in life can feel overwhelming, it also opens the door to deep personal renewal. As a divorce coach, I’ve worked with countless women who find themselves standing at the crossroads of heartbreak and healing, unsure of who they are outside of a decades-long partnership.

Recently, Lisa Ling came to Davidson to discuss this emerging group with me and other divorce professionals. Our women’s divorce support group “Her Next Chapter” was featured in a segment on the CBS Morning Show. Also included were Danielle Walle, Family Law Attorney; Eileen Stoner, Certified Divorce Financial Analyst; and Karyn Porter, Certified Divorce Real Estate Expert. The challenges of gray divorce are real and unique. Women over 50 often face financial fears after years of shared assets and unequal

earnings, feelings of loneliness as adult children leave home, and a shaken sense of identity. Many tell me, “I don’t even know where to begin.” But what I remind them—and what I want every woman to know—is that this can be a season of rediscovery.

Post-divorce life is not about starting over; it’s about moving forward with wisdom. It’s a chance to reconnect with your values, reclaim your confidence, and rewrite your story on your own terms. Whether that means going back to school, traveling solo, or simply finding peace in your own space, you are not too old and it is not too late.

Gray divorce may close one chapter, but it also begins another ... one filled with resilience, strength, and self-love. Your life after 50 can be the most authentic, empowered, and joyful version yet.

CARE

YOUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM DOES MORE THAN BREAK DOWN FOOD.

In fact, it’s deeply connected to your overall health, mood, and energy. When something feels “off,” whether it’s heartburn, bloating, or more chronic concerns, it can affect your whole sense of well-being. That’s why caring for your gut is critical when it comes to personal care ... it’s about taking care of YOU!

At Piedmont HealthCare Comprehensive Digestive Care Center, patients find more than exceptional expertise, they find a team that truly listens. The practice’s five nurse practitioners, Tiedra Palmer, Crystal Green, Katie Dye, Alopi Modi, DNP, and Kelly Buchholz, bring warmth, skill, and a personal touch to every visit. Together, they are the heart of the practice, offering comfort and clarity to patients who may be navigating sensitive digestive health concerns.

Working alongside board-certified gastroenterologists

Dr. Trivedi, Dr. Rau, and Dr. Gangireddy, this team provides individualized care for a wide range of conditions, including reflux, IBS, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis. They also help patients prepare for preventive screenings such as colonoscopies, ensuring each experience is as smooth and supportive as possible.

Women’s digestive health can be affected by hormones, stress, and diet, but small lifestyle choices can make a big difference. Recommended by our physicians, try these expert tips to help your gut (and the rest of you) feel your best:

GI PRO TIPS FOR WOMEN

1 Hydrate Like You Mean It Water keeps everything moving, literally. Aim for at least eight, 8-ounce glasses a day to help your digestive system do its job and prevent constipation.

3 Watch the Sneaky Triggers

Processed snacks, sugary drinks, and too much caffeine can leave you feeling bloated or sluggish. Pay attention to what foods make you feel your best (and which ones don’t).

5 Stress Less, Digest Better

Your gut feels your stress. Try walking, yoga, or even journaling to calm your system and ease digestion.

2 Fill Up on Fiber Fruits, veggies, and whole grains aren’t just good for your heart, they’re your gut’s best friend. Fiber feeds healthy bacteria and keeps digestion on track.

4 Don’t Brush Off Symptoms

Heartburn, abdominal pain, or changes in bowel habits are worth talking about. Early attention can help identify reflux, IBS, or other GI issues before they get worse.

6 Stay on Top of Screenings

Women over 45 should discuss colon cancer screening options. Regular check-ins with your provider can keep your gut, and your whole body, in balance.
