Fresh starts can take many forms. Maybe it’s a big move, like so many of us who came to Lake Norman chasing something new (and discovering our own slice of paradise). Maybe it’s a career leap, starting a business, going back to work, or choosing to stay home. Sometimes it’s not a major change at all, it’s the quiet commitment to build better habits, reset priorities, or shift your perspective.

Whatever it looks like, a fresh start is personal. And while only about 9% of people actually stick to their New Year’s resolutions, I say let’s forget the pressure and focus on intention. D U E T O R I S I N G R AT E S O F chronic disease, increasing healthcare costs, and an aging population, experts across the globe warn that we’re facing a growing health challenge. It’s easy to assume that nutrition alone is the missing link, but the truth is more layered. While what we eat certainly matters, the deeper and more overlooked key to lifelong health lies in something far more empowering—protecting and strengthening our muscles.

As we age, our muscle mass naturally declines. This loss (called sarcopenia) can quietly chip away at our strength, balance, energy, and vitality. But here’s the good news: we can slow, halt, and even reverse that decline.

I don’t. The first weeks of a New Year start the high season for divorce activity.

Health care coverage represents another gap in silver divorce. Some women need to go back to work in order to secure healthcare coverage. My experience collaborating with women in the trenches of divorce has revealed that it is extremely difficult to build any kind of meaningful career at age 50.

Finally, the biggest gap is the knowledge and experience gap. By that I mean, research into family finances reveals that in half of all marriages, women report having little or no specific understanding about what the family earns, saves, spends, or owes.

While the rates of divorce in the U.S. have been declining slightly over the last few years, the rate of divorce has doubled for Americans age 50+ since 1990.1 We call this age cohort silver divorce, but there is nothing lustrous about it.

A gray or silver divorce carries specific risks that younger couples do not face. Women in particular can be more financially fragile when they divorce after age 50.2 Research shows that women who divorce later in life, suffer a reduction in income and lifestyle to the tune of almost 50% as compared to men.

Why this disparity? To begin with, in general, women do not spend as many years in the workforce as men.

As such, they tend not to have earned or saved as much as men and have less experience with financial matters and investments. Without good financial guidance for these women during the divorce process, there may not be adequate support or a fair division of the assets. In addition, women tend to live longer than men and suffer higher healthcare costs later in life.

“My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was in college,” she shares.

“Seeing her go through that shaped everything. I saw firsthand how meaningful the relationship is between an oncologist and their patient, and I knew I wanted to provide that same support for others.”

Dr. Dallas attended the University of Georgia and went to medical school at the Medical College of Georgia; she then did her residency and fellowship at the University of Florida. Along the way she met her husband, Dr. Christopher Young, and today they are raising two daughters, Isabella and Sophia, and navigating the balancing act that comes with two physicians sharing one very full life.

“My family is my inspiration,” she smiles, “from my mother who walked through cancer with so much strength, to my husband and girls who believe in me every day.” Her family is also the reason she recently decided to shift to part-time work—an intentional choice to be fully present for her daughters without stepping away from the patients she loves. “It was a big change,” she admits. “But I realized this is the season where my girls need me, and there’s a way to honor that while still caring for my patients.”

Some life events have left permanent marks on Dr. Dallas, including her Type I diabetes diagnosis right after medical school. “It was overwhelming,” she says. “New state, new job, new everything and then this ... but the experience changed me. It made me more empathetic. It helped me understand what patients feel when their world shifts, so I understood them on a whole new level.”

Dr. Dallas’s story is a reminder that the best physicians are shaped not only by their education, but by the people they love, the challenges they’ve weathered, and the lives they touch. Her journey continues to guide the way she shows up for her patients and her daughters every day. As the warmer months approach, everyone rushes to start construction, upgrades, and dock installations.

But before the first shovel hits the dirt, early permitting is the single most important step you can take to protect your investment—especially if you're considering purchasing a vacant lakefront lot. Opportunities like these are rare, and the ability to design both your home and your dock from the ground up is the ultimate lake-living luxury. Still, securing the proper permits can determine whether your dream is achievable.

My earliest memory of medicine begins with my father. After finishing his shift at the local hospital in Vietnam, he would treat patients in the basement of our home. They also reinforced my belief that anyone can achieve the ultimate American Dream.

When I completed my medical school at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL, I chose Pediatrics and Internal Medicine specialties because I value the human connection in every patient encounter. In 2006, I moved to North Carolina. After years in a large healthcare system, I joined One Health in 2021 to stay true to my “WHY”. At One Health, the doctor-patient relationship is at the center of everything we do. Our model is unique: specialists embedded in primary care offices-sport medicine, LGBTQ care, nutritionists, mental health counselors, lactation specialists, pharmacists, and urgent care-all working together to meet patients where they are.

One Health also allows me to nurture my passion for teaching. Whether I am mentoring high school and college students exploring medicine, or guiding Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner students during their clinical rotations, my goal is to help them understand the true value of primary care- where listening comes first. Watching their eyes light up as they connect the dotsgrasping why each question matters, why every test must be chosen carefully, and why each medication is prescribed with intention-is deeply rewarding. More than anything, I want them to experience the rare trust and profound connection between patient and provider. That, to me, is the very heart of medicine.

For Dr. Nicole Whitehead, founder and owner of Advanced Spinal Fitness in Mooresville, welcoming Dr. Kayla Suddeth Walden to her practice earlier this year was like seeing a spark from long ago ignite into its own steady flame.

“A young Kayla first came into my office when she was just 10 years old,” Dr. Nicole recalls. “She was an active dancer and athlete, and chiropractic care helped her recover and stay strong through all those growing years. I never could’ve imagined she’d one day join me as a colleague.”

Years later, while earning her biology degree at East Carolina University, Dr. Kayla found herself back at the front desk of the same office that had influenced so much of her youth: “I remember thinking how much I admired Dr. Nicole and the way she cared for her patients. One summer, she invited me to a chiropractic continuing education seminar, and that weekend completely changed my life.

I came home knowing I wanted to be a chiropractor.”

Following her graduation from ECU, Dr. Kayla attended Palmer College of Chiropractic in Florida. When it came time to complete her final-quarter externship, there was only one place she wanted to be: “It felt natural to ask Dr. Nicole if I could do my preceptorship with her.

It was like coming home, but this time I was on the other side of the table.”

From January through March of 2025, Dr. Kayla completed her internship under Dr. Nicole’s mentorship before officially joining the practice in April.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to have Dr. Kayla on our team,” Dr. Nicole smiles. “She’s grown up with this practice; and her compassion, intelligence, and energy make her a perfect fit. Over the years, I’ve mentored several young people toward the chiropractic field, but Dr. Kayla is the first who came full circle, back home to the community where it all began—working in my office as well as a practice in Charlotte.

Watching Dr. Kayla step into her role as a doctor in the same office where she once came for care is a beautiful return ... proof that what we give to others often finds its way back to us in the most unexpected and rewarding ways.
