ads@lakenormanwoman.com PO Box 1000, Cornelius, NC 28031 BLOOM BIG. GO BIG OR GO HOME. Swing

for the fence. Go for broke. Those are all super inspirational suggestions, right? After all, it seems quite lame—ill-mannered even—to pat someone on the back as they’re embarking on a new venture or going for a goal and suggest that they “Hold a little back!” or “Pull your punches!” Let’s face it: our society loves folks who are bold, gregarious, and daring. In other words, we love to celebrate those who bloom big. I’m not that kind of bloomer. I’m a bit of an introvert, so I’m far more likely to want to just go on home than go big. It’s not that I’m shy. In fact, put me in a small group and I can be quite the social butterfly. (Well, maybe not a social butterfly, more like an almost-at-ease moth.) And I’m not timid. I like taking on challenges and I even like shooting for the stars. But if the only way to reach those stars were to be big and bold, then I probably wouldn’t have gotten anywhere. For me, it’s a discerning eye and a healthy dose of caution that give me the confidence to move forward. I’m much more of a “go deliberately and go smart” kind of gal. Though if I’m being honest, I can’t deny that there are times I wish I could throw caution to the wind and face challenges with a hearty appetite for risk and a gutsy temperament. Those success stories are far more sexy than the “go smart” variety, aren’t they? Take that of Frederick Smith, the founder of Fed Ex, for example. Three years in, the fledgling company was

hemorrhaging $1 million each month. After being denied a crucial loan, Smith obtained a $5,000 line of credit and flew to Las Vegas, where he preceded to make $27,000 on Black Jack bets that kept the company alive for one more week until he could raise the $11 million needed to keep the company afloat. Now that’s bold. Please don’t misunderstand: I am in no way suggesting that doubling down or splitting your aces is a good way to raise capital—in fact, I’m breaking out in hives just thinking about it. But in order to move forward in life, we often have to decide it’s time to bloom. And that means taking some sort of action. For me, introvert that I am, that will never mean putting it all on black or riding into a new situation Miley Cyrus-style, on a wrecking ball in my underwear (Yikes. Now I can’t get that image out of my head. My apologies if it sticks in yours, too.) However, I’ve come to realize that blooming big doesn’t require giant leaps of boldness. Boldness can also be small, conservative actions—you know, coming in more like a chisel than a wrecking ball—that slowly and steadily lead us to the lives we were designed to have. The bonus of that method of blooming big, of course, is that no salve is needed for the wrecking ball rash. w

fever!

SPRING AHH, SPRING—REBIRTH, REGROWTH, NEW BEGINNINGS. Hope springs

eternal, and there’s no time like the present to embrace change and begin to see the world in perhaps a more encouraging and positive light. In fact, says WebMD, spring fever is a real thing. There are reasons behind that skip in your step—physical, scientific reasons. Here are a few symptoms and their causes: SPRING

CLEANING

While there are no biological reasons for this, the need to rid ourselves of clutter and deep clean the house after being cooped up all winter is so imbedded in Western culture that it seems to be ingrained in our subconscious … so happy cleaning!

SLEEPING

LESS

The additional sunlight tells your body to produce less melatonin, a main ingredient in putting your brain in sleep mode.

CRAVING FRESH

PRODUCE

This makes sense because of availability and the fact that our great, great, great (and so on) grandparents would eat heavier foods during the winter months (to store up for winter, so to speak) and begin eating their fresher, lighter fare come spring.

SMILING

MORE A WebMD study found that the transition to spring causes a chemical change—sunlight causes an increase in serotonin and activates endorphins which are both responsible for feelings of happiness.

URGE TO

EXERCISE

It’s not unlike coming out of hibernation; the extra dose of sunlight gives your body more Vitamin D which actually prompts you to get out and move. w

How did you go from stay-at-home mom to business owner? I was happy to be a full-time mom when the girls were little and my husband was growing his business—all the while knowing eventually, God willing, I would own a boutique and name it Cozy. As the girls grew more independent, I started exploring business opportunities with a focus on being able to give back to the community. My biggest joy has been watching my three daughters see my passion in building Cozy Boutique into what it is today. Many other women role models have given me the inspiration needed to be a successful female businessowner while also being a wife and mother. This fuels my motivation and leaves me with a desire to encourage my daughters and other women to follow their dreams, too.

HERE SHE IS

lesley crabb

Life’s toughest moments make us stronger, what’s yours? My parents’ divorce. I was raised by a single mom who showed me a level of strength that I hadn’t ever experienced and gave me the determination I have today. Fast forward into my late teen years, my relationship with my father was repaired and is flourishing. I thank God for second chances because my dad is such a significant part of my life. Going through the divorce at an early age taught me that life is not always going to be easy. I learned it’s how you handle situations when they aren’t a cakewalk that builds your character.

What’s fun at work? Everything! I absolutely love working with our wonderful customers to help them feel fabulous. One of my biggest joys is seeing people out and about wearing outfits they feel good in … that they bought from us! I am also fascinated by the business operations side of the boutique and enjoy buying at market, staying on trend, thinking big picture, being creative, and changing up the store front … keeping it fresh and COZY.

WRITER

And now for the obligatory question, how do you juggle work and family life? Honestly, my family and I knew going into the first couple years it wouldn’t be a perfect balance. I think having that knowledge upfront was freeing because we didn’t have unrealistic expectations. Ultimately, I found a healthy balance mainly because I have the best team! These amazing women, I call my Cozy Rockstars, allow me the freedom to work around my family’s crazy schedule, have a small wedge of personal time, and juggle what needs to happen businesswise as well … I am so grateful for each of them! w

SELF-CARE

including parents!

Is Important For Everyone – Are you overwhelmed and frazzled? Do you sacrifice your well-being to maintain your busy parenting schedule? Self-care might be the key to feeling happy, healthy, and loving toward your spouse and children. DOES LIFE FEEL UNMANAGEABLE?

What is self-care? Self-care refers to doing something positive and helpful for yourself that reduces stress and improves physical and emotional well-being. It isn’t self-indulgence or laziness. Self-care habits feel good and help you stay healthy—and can even improve your parenting and make you a better partner. (It might even increase your sexual libido!) Self-care habits are one of the best ways for parents to meet their own needs and family responsibilities. You might focus so much on your children you have little time for yourself. Sometimes, it might feel impossible to carve out time for something as simple as basic hygiene. But when you care for yourself, you’re looking out for your loved ones just as much as you are caring for yourself. You’ll be better equipped to care for your children and fulfill other responsibilities. And the best way to teach your children self-care is to model it yourself.

Self-care and mental health are connected, so neglecting yourself harms many areas of your life. Sometimes, parental or marital stress becomes severe enough that you can’t manage it on your own. So, one of the best things you can do is seek professional help. Here are some signs you are in serious need of self-care:

What can you do to ensure you’re practicing good self-care habits? Include daily activities into your family’s schedule. Target areas such as your physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and relational well-being. Aim to do at least one thing that improves your wellbeing, for example: • getting at least seven hours of sleep every night • going to the doctor for annual check-ups • engaging in some form of physical activity

• changes in sleeping or eating habits

• making nutritious meals as a family

• physical symptoms like headaches, dizziness, or stomach upset

• regularly socializing with friends

• feeling unsafe, depressed, guilty, vulnerable, anxious, or lonely • problems with focus and concentration • frequent irritation or frustration • crying or angry outbursts • seeking extramarital relationships

• reserving time each day for reading a book or taking a bath • doing something fun for yourself, like taking a class • spending quality time with your partner or children • practicing meditation or mindfulness activities • using a journal to reflect on each day’s self-care activities

Taking care of your well-being as a family is a powerful way to model healthy behaviors. Self-care shows your children and partner that it’s essential to take care of their well-being, too. In addition, prioritizing self-care activities will help you manage whatever life challenges crop up. Not only will you be more resilient, but self-care practices strengthen your family’s foundation. w LKN EXPERT

My anxiety was through the roof, and I hid it from the world due to the trauma I was experiencing from my last relationship. I felt like I was drowning behind closed doors. I went from being a single mom of one child to a single mom of three! However, I refused to let my circumstances become my excuse. I do everything for them and hold my head high. I know my story and know that I am strong. They are a constant reminder that I can overcome anything.

Let’s Sit for a Cup of Tea One thing that I have made a personal mission in the past year is to make more time for myself and my family. I have always been the type of person who doesn’t want to stop working on a task until it is complete, and I’m learning to set boundaries with my workloads. There is always going to be another thing on the to-do list or another chore that needs to be done. Sometimes you need to take a break and just have some fun.

I’ve always had a passion for baking, but it wasn't something that I planned on pursuing. In 2016, I had my first-born son, Ashton, and often found myself craving chocolate chip cookies. I was eating them so often that I decided to try and make them from scratch. After making them my mom wouldn't eat any other cookie. When I would bring cookies home, she would always say, "I don't want those. I only want Ashley's Famous Cookies." After about a year and half of her constantly telling me that I need to sell my cookies, I gave it a shot.

A Batch Made In Heaven

I enjoy the freedom to be creative and work outside the box. I love that I get to work with my hands and create something that makes people happy and feel loved. Having always been a jack-of-all-trades, I am able to tie a lot of my interests into one with my work. And although I wear many hats, it keeps me on my toes … there is always a new adventure around the corner.

A Magical Blend

I hope to inspire others who have a dream and have been counted out because of the odds against them. I hope to spread love through my work and open more doors for myself and others. I want to take something ordinary and make it magical. To me, Ashley’s Famous Cookies is more than just a cookie company. It’s a dream. I hope to create an experience for others through my product that makes them feel happy and in the moment. I have so many ideas for the future, and I look forward to making them a reality.

the non-profit Keep America Beautiful (KAB) was founded. The organization is dedicated to protecting and preserving the environment. Americans produce about 200 million tons of garbage each year and while 70 percent of it is recyclable, we only recycle about 30 percent. Beyond refuse, we leave our sloppy footprints on our planet in various other ways as well. What can you do to become a better steward of our planet?

CHECKOUT THE GAMEDAY RECYCLING CHALLENGE. CIGARETTES ARE UNHEALTHY FOR THE PLANET, TOO!

Cigarettes are the most littered item in the country. Visit KAB’s Cigarette Litter Prevention Program website at www.preventcigarettelitter.org to find out how to create an initiative in your community.

This friendly competition encourages colleges and universities to implement waste reduction programs and events during home football games. More information is available at www.gamedaychallenge.org.

NO MORE PLASTIC STRAWS!

According to www.plasticpollutioncoalition.org, “In only the past twenty years, people have come to expect plastic straws in every drink, in an example of extreme waste being generated for minimal convenience. These short-lived tools are usually dropped into a garbage can with no further thought, instantly becoming one of the biggest sources of plastic pollution.”

What inspired you to pick up the litter on the streets of Denver? After moving here in 2004, I was disappointed with— and disturbed by— how the roadways of this otherwise beautiful area were strewn with litter. I don’t want to be embarrassed by the amount of litter in my community, and I don’t want kids in this area to grow up thinking that this is how roads are supposed to look. Litter has not been a problem anywhere else I’ve lived, and I lived in numerous places during my 20 years in the Air Force.

I F YO U ’ V E T R A V E L E D T H E S T R E E T S O F L A K E N O R M A N ,

there’s a good chance you’ve seen her—the lady wearing yellow reflection clothing from head to toe and carrying an orange bag. That’s Patty Korn, a Denver resident and tireless volunteer who spends countless hours picking up trash along our roadways. If you want to help, visit www.gofundme.com/litterfree-denver-nc.

Why is it important to you to make a difference in your community? Because of the old saying, “What you do for yourself dies with you; what you do for others is your legacy.” This area is beautiful, but it’s all negated because our roads are covered in trash. I want to change that for future generations.

How much trash do you typically pick up in a day? What’s the most unusual thing you’ve encountered? It depends on how much time I have that day and what roads I clean. In 2021, I picked up 766 bags of roadside litter, 369 bags of debris around curbs and medians, and numerous bulk items such as tires, mostly in eastern Lincoln County. I’ve picked up some things you don’t even want to imagine—it’s a dirty job, after all. I’d have to say the most unusual, though, are a toilet and a discarded hot tub.

What is your ultimate goal? Not to have to do this anymore! I like the way the roads look once I’ve picked up the litter, but what I’d really like is for my efforts to no longer be necessary. It is frustrating how quickly the litter returns, so I can always use help in terms of both more volunteers and financial support for litter pickup tools (which break frequently), gloves, highvisibility gear, Hefty Steel Sak trash bags for the median cleanups, and hand wipes. I have a Go Fund Me page (see above) on which folks can contribute if they would like to help! w

If you would have asked a young Starr Miller

(Founder/Principal of StarrMiller Interior Design) if she knew what she wanted to be when she grew up, she would have answered with a resounding YES! When Starr was in the seventh grade, her mom allowed her to work with a professional designer to redecorate her room; and it was through this experience that Starr’s love of design was born and she became a shining example of “the way to do great work is to love what you do.”

c

oupled with her exceptional talent and knowledge of the industry, Starr has won just about every award and accolade there is, and while she is the epitome of what talent, hard work, perseverance, and gratitude can achieve, she is not one to take the spotlight, nor all the credit. “We have a remarkable team here,” Starr smiles. “I know it may sound cliché, but these women are like my family … we truly love each other, and it shows in our work.” As family is wont to do, Starr has endearing nicknames for her co-workers. Dianna Lomangino, The Trusted Virtuoso, and Cecile Winstead, The Sassy Shepherd, are two of Starr’s stellar teammates and they, too, have had an eye for design since youth.

“Since I was young,” Dianna says,” I always had an interest in spaces. I remember in school as I sat in class, instead of working on the assignment, I would daydream of how I would arrange the classroom differently. When we ate at restaurants, I would look around studying every detail, noticing how all the different elements connected to each other.” Originally from Long Island, New York, Dianna’s

family moved to Mooresville when she was 8 years old. After graduating from Lake Norman High School, she attended The Art Institute of Charlotte where she received her bachelor’s degree in interior design. Shortly thereafter, she joined Starr’s team and, nearly 10 years later, here they are. “I am inspired by the ladies I work with every day,” Dianna says. “We are all here for each other, sharing lessons learned and encouraging one another.” On a similar note, the team’s Sassy Shepherd (aka Cecile), knew design was written in her stars from a very young age as well. “I was always rearranging spaces in our house growing up,” she recalls. Before landing in Lake Norman, Cecile’s hometown was Morganton, and she moved in 1987 to attend UNCGreensboro where she earned her bachelor’s degree in housing and interior design. Cecile has one daughter, 22-year-old Morgan, who is a graduating senior at Western Carolina University. “I have been and continue to be inspired by the people I work with,” Cecile says. “When you have a great group of women around you, lifting you up, it encourages you to do your best and have fun while doing it. I enjoy bringing my clients’ visions to life—making the spaces what

“This collaboration begins with the client’s goals, objectives, and dreams and is then layered with the talents of three designers who all hold degrees in design from different institutions ..." they want them to be, and I love collaborating with our team to make this happen.” With this constellation of talents, Starr and her team have garnered national acclaim with multiple industry honors. Starr herself graduated from the prestigious Parsons School of Design in NYC and has won the National Interior Design Society’s DOTY (Designer of the Year) award six times, as well as many other national and regional awards. Prior to her interior design career, Starr received her bachelor’s degree in business marketing from the University of Alabama. After graduation, she spent two successful decades in the senior levels of the country’s largest and most respected retailers and Fortune 500 companies. Additionally, Starr is the first Certified Aging in Place Specialist

(CAPS) designer in the area and was the force behind the 2020 IDS Showhouses project. Prior to moving to North Carolina, she was a designer for HGTV’s “Save My Bath.” The cornerstone of the success for SMID is the level of collaboration that exists. “This collaboration,” Starr says, “begins with the client’s goals, objectives, and dreams and is then layered with the talents of three designers who all hold degrees in design from different institutions. The diversity of the team’s training, experience, and skills provides our clients with unique designs focused on the individuality of the client— unconstrained by a predictable aesthetic found in much of the industry. Match this incredible pool of design talent with our partnering trade and craftsmen and you have

a truly customized experience and outcome,” she adds. Starr takes great delight in what each of her teammates brings to the table—individual talents, skills, experiences, and personalities—and it is this versatility, Starr points out, and those beautiful differences that make us better together. “I’m very proud of the business I’ve built,” Starr says with obvious gratitude, “but I am prouder of this team who continue to show up in every way possible … we are all here because we love this industry, we love our clients, we love each other, and we love this community we call home … I guess you could say it was written in the stars!” w

BENEFITS OF CHOOSING A

COLLABORATIVE DIVORCE WHEN I EXPERIENCED MY DIVORCE OVER A DECADE AGO, I wish I

knew about the option for collaborative divorce. At the time, it was fairly new to North Carolina as it was passed into law by the state legislature in 2003. This bill recognized collaborative law as an alternative to court and defined the key components of the collaborative process. Instead, my ex and I, along with our two children, experienced a divorce that was expensive, drawn-out, and – at times – adversarial.

AVOID COURT: When you choose an alternative dispute resolution process, such as collaborative law, you won’t step foot into a courtroom. Rather than letting a judge decide what’s best for your family – including asset division and child custody – you and your spouse will work together with your separate attorneys to create an enduring divorce agreement that works for the entire family. In order for this to work, both spouses must commit to the collaborative law process and agree that they will not use the threat of litigation.

FOCUS ON YOUR CHILDREN: Collaborative law prioritizes the well-being of children before, during, and after divorce. As part of the process, a co-parenting agreement is created with input from both spouses, their attorneys, and, if necessary, child specialists. It also outlines future scenarios that are often subject to conflict such as holidays, birthdays, vacations, and education.

SAVE TIME AND MONEY: Divorce through litigation is often costly and time consuming. Sometimes, divorce litigation can take years and the costs increase after every meeting, document prep, and court appearance. With collaborative law, we move as quickly as possible and oftentimes, the divorce filing happens shortly after the state’s mandatory one-year’s separation.

PRIORITIZE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH: Divorce can be an emotionally complex experience. When you choose a collaborative divorce, there is focus on respectful communication that allows you to protect your mental health. In addition, the collaborative process welcomes the assistance of third-party mental health experts or coaches that can help with the emotions of negotiation as you work toward a resolution.

ACHIEVE A WIN-WIN: A collaborative divorce resolution is a win-win agreement for all parties involved. As you work to untangle the business of your marriage, collaborativetrained attorneys help to negotiate a resolution that fairly divides assets and distributes debts. The agreement is created with equal input from both parties, so you can create a resolution that works best for everyone, including your children. w

My personal experience inspired me to become a certified divorce mediator and collaborative family law attorney. When I discovered that collaborative law and other types of alternative dispute resolution processes are committed to keeping families out of the courtroom, I knew this was a better way to divorce. While it was too late for me, I used my experience as an opportunity to help others. It became my personal and professional mission to give more people the opportunity to divorce using this healthier method. Choosing collaborative divorce has many benefits and will help you:

Are You Stuck In A Rut? 5 strategies to get unstuck

J O B S , R E L AT I O N S H I P S , L I F E I N G E N E R A L — we

can all get to a place where we feel stuck. According to research by Rasmussen College, almost one in five Americans say they are unhappy with their job, and nearly three-quarters of those polled are bored in their marriage. Here are some things to consider if you are in need of change: Repeat Your Mantras and Prayers. The more we repeat and focus on the words that bring change, the more likely it is to come to fruition. It is possible to manifest your dreams.

Set Smaller Goals. Sometimes it is counterproductive when we think about the enormity of what needs to be done in order to implement real change in our lives. With this in mind, set attainable, smaller goals that are in line with your long-term plans.

Do the Hard Thing. It is often difficult to break out of our comfort zones so if you like to stay home, make plans to go out once a week; if you are too much of a social butterfly, make family or date night a priority.

Help Someone Else. When you give, you grow. Making a positive difference in someone’s life automatically spawns gratitude and gives meaning in new ways. Be True to Yourself. You must be in tune to your authentic self. When we are trying to have the perfect job, the perfect family, car, house, etc., we tend to lose sight of ourselves. Reexamine what you really need to make yourself happy and proceed accordingly. w

a world of

passion and creativity! I MOVED TO THE LAKE NORMAN AREA WITH MY FAMILY WHEN I WAS 6 AND STARTED MY JOURNEY AS A STYLIST AFTER GRADUATING FROM SOUTH IREDELL HIGH SCHOOL. My career choices were between law school and cosmetology, but I have always loved working with my hands, so the opportunity to make people feel great about themselves and be surrounded by joy every day just seemed the obvious choice. I went to The Aveda Institute of Charlotte and absolutely loved it. My training at Aveda was top-notch, and the stimulating environment of creativity and art consumed me. I knew cosmetology was my passion and something I could do for the rest of my life. After graduation, I worked for a salon with locations in both Birkdale and downtown Charlotte

(Hearst Tower) where I went through one year of training and assisting before I was able to start as a junior stylist—five years later I was senior stylist. Having always dreamed of branching out on my own, I decided the timing was right so I rented a room at the Chameleon Studio in Mooresville. After working six days a week and long hours it was time for the next step. That’s when I started Pure Reflections Salon and Boutique in Mooresville. The name Pure Reflections Salon was created because I wanted to embrace the pure image of God in our salon. I wanted to show people the love and beauty of God in our industry. It was just me at

Pure Reflections for some time and when I was finally able to bring on another stylist, I immediately thought of a former coworker, Kacie Kauffman, and the rest is history! After five years of being at our first location, it was time to upgrade as we had grown too big for our little shop on salon row. We moved to a larger location at 111 Kilson Drive in Mooresville where we currently reside. We have been at our little piece of heaven now for almost six years and have had some amazing stylists join us. We give God thanks for all we have accomplished and thanks to all of those who have supported us through the years and the new ones yet to come!

LKNW HALL PASS: YOUR INSIDE GUIDE TO EDUCATION

TO

not

Test

OR

TO

Test

Changes in the ACT/SAT and how it could affect your college plans! IT’S ALMOST THAT TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN!

The time when parents are freaking out (if their children are high school juniors or seniors) because it’s time to suit up for the dreaded ACT or SAT. Then, BOOM! We get the word that the College Board is moving the SAT to digital and shaving an hour off the test! Parents started to rejoice and retool their plans because they also heard the news that the University of California college system, has abolished the requirements for the standardized tests, and many other colleges and universities across the country have followed suit. Is it time to strike up the band and celebrate? I think not… let me tell you what this means:

With standardized testing being optional for colleges and universities, more emphasis is going to be placed on actual grades and community/volunteer service. This isn’t the end of the world if you’ve already been grooming your kids to stay connected, but what if you have not? Plan to include community service in your rotation of regular family activities at least once a quarter. Another idea that hasn’t quite been discussed as much as parents need is that going test-optional for college admissions just impacts admission, NOT funding. Colleges may not require the ACT or SAT to get into college BUT there is still the small matter of paying for college. When you start looking at the internal and portable scholarships that are available, several are still asking for these test scores. Accounting for the pandemic and how that has wreaked havoc on finding locations to take said tests, several scholarships left the option of adding scores in 2020 and 2021. For 2022 and beyond, it isn’t wise to count on this pattern to continue.

In regards to the SAT going digital, it’s about revenue—700,000 fewer students took the SAT in 2021. The College Board has to make up that money as they still need to compete with the ACT, stay relevant, and of course, keep afloat financially. If you want to have a shot at the school funding opportunities that exist as well as the large cache of external scholarships, my recommendation is to test. Yes, it’s stressful, yes it costs to prepare, and yes it could be that you don’t get any scholarships from the effort. But what if it pays off ? What if that 25 on the ACT is the difference between your child receiving a $10k renewable scholarship or you having to make up that difference out of your retirement fund?

The test option doesn’t mean that you’re automatically waived from the scholarship requirements at educational institutions. Frankly it’s not a risk worth taking for many with more than one child. w Shawn A. Hall is a former U.S. Department of Education Program specialist who resides in Mooresville. Quiche INGREDIENTS:

1 frozen pie crust, thawed 1 4-oz. bag of real bacon bits ½ cup of chopped onion 6 ounces of shredded Swiss or cheddar cheese or combination of both 3 ounces of parmesan cheese 4 eggs lightly beaten 1 cup half-and-half cream DIRECTIONS: 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2

Place thawed pie crust into greased pie pan.

3 Mix all ingredients together except for the eggs and cream which you will lightly beat in a separate bowl. 4 Put the cheese and bacon mixture into your pie crust first (NOTE: The mixture should entirely fill the pie crust, and it looks VERY full even before you pour the egg batter on top; this aids in the quiche texture and prevents a soggy crust). 5 Pour the eggs/cream mixture evenly over the top of the pie. 6 Bake for about an hour or until top of quiche begins to turn brown and the center is firm, not wet. w

LKNW RECOGNIZES A WOMAN DOING EXCEPTIONAL WORK IN THE LAKE NORMAN COMMUNITY, A LEADER WHO IS PAVING THE WAY TO CHANGING OUR ATTITUDES AND INSPIRING CONFIDENCE IN THE FUTURE.

on MY JOURNEY TO LAKE NORMAN: I met my husband, Chris, at the Mayo Clinic … he was a researcher, and I was a medical student there. We have three children: Camille, 13; Patrick, 10; and Greta, 6. Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, and then moving for my medical education, I’ve enjoyed living in many locations, but Lake Norman has truly become our home. I grew up enjoying summer days on a lake so some of my fondest childhood memories involve time on the water. on MORE OF THAT FAMILY FUN: Nowadays when we’re out on Lake Norman with the family, my childhood memories come flooding back, and I get to share that nostalgia of childhood magic and carefree fun with my kids … watching them participate in some of the same activities I did as a child. Nothing makes me prouder than seeing my children grow into unique and remarkable individuals. That’s pure joy! Additionally, my parents are now our neighbors, and we get to enjoy multigenerational lake life. One of the many lessons I took from the pandemic is to cherish those closest to us, especially family. on MEDICINE BEING A NATURAL FIT: For someone who enjoys studying science and interacting with people, medicine came quite naturally to me. Also, while in medical school, I underwent some specialized allergy testing and treatment myself which drew me into the allergy/ immunology field. There are still so many things we don’t fully understand about individuals and their delicate allergies; it pushes us to keep studying, learning, and adapting our practice to provide the best care possible. Now in the Covid era, it’s more important than ever to equip patients with a clear understanding of their individual health issues and risks and to feel empowered to make the best decisions for themselves and their families.

on MY FAITH AS MY COMPASS: I look to Mother Teresa for inspiration in ministering to my patients. While admittedly a vastly different culture, the folks in our communities are not unlike the people of Calcutta – the basic need for human connection and compassion is universal. Mother Teresa lived to bring God’s love to people, and I am inspired to do the same. My faith is my compass … my faith is what gives meaning to everything I do in life. w

So in an effort to save our readers some time, effort, and money here are a few tips, tricks, and hacks that might come in handy in your busy world! Water, Water Everywhere Up to 60 percent of the body is water and 70 percent of the Earth is comprised of H2O so the importance of water should not be overlooked. In addition to drinking your daily amount, seek it in other ways for healthy mind, body, and soul: Enjoy a bubble bath, take a walk in the rain, swim, hike around the lake, kayak, or picnic by a stream.

Rise and Shine Breakfast kick-starts your metabolism and provides vital nutrients you need for energy and brain power. Try these quick, easy, and healthy options: whole wheat toast with peanut butter; avocado toast; cottage cheese with fruit; yogurt with granola; or the good ol’ standby instant oatmeal.

Don’t Worry, Be Happy Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter that is responsible for your brain’s reward system and is linked to our pleasure centers. Activate this happy hormone by eating your favorite foods, getting a dose of sunshine, listening to your playlist, or even enjoying a cup of tea—both green and black tea increase dopamine levels in the brain.

Home Remedies For Dry Skin Try sunflower oil, coconut oil, honey, aloe vera, or soak in an oatmeal bath: use uncooked, rolled oats and grind them in a blender, food processor, or coffee grinder; fill the tub with warm, not hot, water and sprinkle the oats in as the tub fills. Tip: For less of a mess, tie the oatmeal in cheesecloth or pantyhose to create an oatmeal sachet. w

BETTER ME … BETTER YOU … BETTER WORLD

MIND body spirit By mixing the ingredients of attitude and action, we can change the flavor of our own lives. Learn to nurture your body and soul to lead a more balanced life.

IMPROVING YOUR

ENERGY SYSTEMS

FOR SPRING ACCORDING TO TRADITIONAL CHINESE M E D I C I N E , the change of

seasons follows a cycle of five phases of energy and matter. Each of these five phases aligns with a specific organ system in the body and influences the health of that organ system. With the emergence of spring, we move into the wood phase which corresponds to the liver energy system in the body. Our liver energy system serves many functions including: Ensuring the smooth flow and circulation of energy Regulating and storing blood Regulating menstruation Assisting digestion Moistening and nourishing the eyes, nails, tendons, and connective tissue of the body Balancing our emotions

It is all too easy, however, for our liver energy to become “stuck” and unbalanced due to stress, lack of movement, anger and irritation, and poor eating habits. This unbalance can lead to the liver’s functions becoming compromised, causing constipation, migraine headaches, bloating and stomach pains, premenstrual cramps, irregular menstruation, tight neck and shoulders, or ligament and tendon injuries. Spring is a time of renewal and new energy, and the perfect opportunity for some self-care to keep your liver energy moving.

**Always consult your physician before trying or taking something new.

To keep your liver energy system healthy, try these self-care tips at home: B R E AT H W O R K

Taking deep breaths is one of the simplest and yet most effective ways of moving our energy. If you notice that you sigh a lot or have shallow breathing, you will benefit from taking “breath breaks” throughout the day. Inhale your breath for a count of four, deep into your belly, then slowly release it for another four counts. Repeat this for three breaths. I N C R E A S E YO U R M O V E M E N T

Moving your muscles will also release any “stuck” energy or emotions. Increasing the amount of movement in your day does not mean you have to take up some intensive exercise program. Just increasing your frequency of movement— moving all your limbs, joints, and muscles—will make your liver system happy. Walking, yoga, or stretching are simple ways to increase the movement in your daily life. TA K E M A G N E S I U M

Sometimes a supplement can help bring about homeostasis when you are out of balance. Magnesium has been shown to reduce muscle cramping, relieve anxiety and stress, and improve sleep – all symptoms that could be caused by a liver imbalance. Try taking 200-400mg/night to relieve these symptoms. TRY ACUPRESSURE

Another easy and effective way to balance your liver energy system is to practice acupressure on the acupuncture point Liver 3. This point is located on the top of the foot, in the deepest depression between the first and second metatarsal bones. Practice acupressure on this point several times a day for at least 30 seconds with moderate pressure to support your liver energy system.
