2024 Annual Report

Established 1885

Established 1885
With fresh water seemingly ubiquitous and accessible — whether it’s upon instant demand from our faucets or an easy stroll down to one of Lake George’s beautiful shorelines — it’s incredibly easy to take this resource for granted. But we should remember that fresh water is just that: an invaluable, finite resource.
Though water covers 71% of our planet, just 0.5% is freshwater available for human use, and only a tiny fraction of that is found in lakes. The portion represented by Lake George is almost too small to measure — yet it sustains drinking water, recreation and life for thousands. That’s why protecting it matters so much.
Freshwater ecosystems are among the most biodiverse on the planet, home to 10% of all known species.
And yet, they're disappearing faster than any other ecosystem. Freshwater species have declined more than 80% since 1970, largely due to pollution, habitat loss, climate change and invasive species. These quiet, often overlooked ecosystems are sounding alarms many don't hear or see.
One of the biggest challenges in freshwater conservation is visibility. People care deeply about the lakes and rivers they love, but often only understand them at the surface. They appreciate a beautiful sunset reflected in the surface of a lake, a day of boating with family or a paddle down a river.
The gap between appreciation and understanding is where so much of our work at the Lake George Association (LGA) lies. We work tirelessly each day to educate our community about the Lake's wonders and threats, and research day-in and day-out to implement real-world solutions to protect the watershed.
We are extremely fortunate to live, work and play in what we truly believe is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Formed 10,000 years ago by melting glaciers, Lake George is the largest body of water within the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park and is classified as Class AA-Special, the highest rating for water quality in the state — indicating that the Lake’s best use is for drinking water due to its clarity and cleanliness.
While 75% of homes receive drinking water directly from the Lake, the watershed also fuels a thriving $3 billion per year tourism industry and accounts for $630 million in direct tourism spending in our towns, villages and 500 tourism businesses throughout the Lake. Plus, the Lake George region represents nearly 80% of all Adirondack Park tourism activities. Without a clear and clean Lake, this vibrant community would not exist.
When we think about what puts Lake George at risk, we focus on five key threats that guide and define our work: invasive species, road salt, nutrient pollution, Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) and climate change. Each of these challenges can erode the Lake’s clarity and health, as well as the experiences that make this place so meaningful — shared family traditions, memories made at the water’s edge, or the sense of awe that comes from seeing Lake George sparkling under the evening sun.
The LGA functions as a protective barrier to defend against these real, daily threats. In utilizing science, community action and data-informed solutions, we safeguard not just Lake George’s water quality, but a way of life: one that connects generations through summers on the dock, hikes above the Lake, and the unmatched beauty of the Queen of American Lakes.
Invasive species are non-native plants and animals that disrupt Lake George’s natural balance, threatening native ecosystems and water quality. Species like Eurasian watermilfoil, spiny water flea and zebra mussels crowd out native organisms, clog waterways and reduce biodiversity. These invaders are often introduced by visitors’ boats, fishing gear and even bait buckets, making prevention and rapid response essential. Once established in the ecosystem, invasive species are extremely difficult and costly to manage. That’s why the LGA focuses on prevention through education, mandatory watercraft inspections and coordinated early detection efforts.
Each winter, more than 190,000 tons of road salt are applied in the Adirondack Park — much of it by the NYS Department of Transportation — leading to long-term contamination of drinking water, soil and aquatic habitats. Road salt doesn’t disappear; it accumulates in the Lake and its tributaries, harming sensitive ecosystems and corroding infrastructure. The LGA is leading advocacy and implementation of smarter salting practices to reduce this threat while maintaining winter road safety. Our work supports legislation, municipal training and public awareness to drive local, regional and statewide change.
Nutrient pollution — primarily nitrogen and phosphorus — comes from stormwater runoff, aging septic systems, lawn fertilizers and other human-related activities. Once in the water, these nutrients overstimulate plant and algae growth, reduce oxygen levels and increase the risk of HABs. Lake George’s naturally low-nutrient environment is easily thrown off balance by small inputs. The LGA tackles nutrient pollution at its source through the implementation of Low Impact Development best practices, septic improvements, wastewater infrastructure upgrades and
public education about reducing fertilizer and pesticide use. When it comes to this threat, every homeowner and business in the watershed plays a role.
HABs are a growing threat to Lake George and water bodies across the northeast. These blooms occur when excess nutrients — often from fertilizers, stormwater or wastewater — combine with warming water temperatures to fuel rapid algae growth. Some HABs produce toxins harmful to people, pets and wildlife, while all of them degrade water clarity and oxygen levels. Though historically rare on Lake George, confirmed non-toxic algal blooms in recent years signal the need for immediate, proactive intervention. The LGA is investing in proactive monitoring — alongside the Jefferson Project — and nutrient reduction initiatives to try to stop HABs before they start.
Climate change is already impacting Lake George, intensifying rainfall, raising water temperatures and increasing the risk of HABs and invasive species expansion. Warmer water holds less oxygen, disrupts seasonal turnover and alters the Lake’s natural rhythms, making it more vulnerable to biological stressors. Stronger storms also increase stormwater runoff, increasing the threat of nutrient pollution. The LGA uses real-time data and long-term modeling through the Jefferson Project to understand and respond to these changes. Our science-based approach to tackling these challenges positions Lake George as a national leader in freshwater climate resilience.
We are honored to share our 2024 Annual Report with you, which offers a reflection of a pivotal year for the Lake George Association and a renewed chapter in the long and storied effort to protect the Queen of American Lakes.
Dr. Brendan Wiltse joined the LGA as Executive Director in the final months of 2024, bringing with him two decades of experience studying and safeguarding freshwater ecosystems in the Adirondack Park and beyond. As a field scientist, researcher, educator and now leader of the LGA, Brendan’s commitment to freshwater conservation runs deep.
Just a few months prior, Dr. John E. Kelly III assumed the role of Board Chair, reinforcing the LGA’s commitment to science-driven and collaborative environmental leadership. With a career at the forefront of technology and innovation — including as former Executive Vice President of IBM and co-founder of the Jefferson Project — John brings a future-focused vision rooted in learning from data and a profound respect for Lake George’s history.
Together, we are proud to lead the oldest lake conservation organization in the United States, an organization that has stood as a guardian for Lake George since 1885. This legacy carries weight, built over generations by stewards, scientists, advocates and community members whose work continues to guide us today. We are deeply grateful to follow in their footsteps.
The LGA remained steady through a period of transition in 2024, thanks to the exceptional resilience and professionalism of our staff and Board. Now, with new leadership and a shared sense of clarity and direction, we are poised to build on that momentum with a strong vision, energy and renewed purpose.
Everything we do is rooted in science. We believe that data and innovation are essential to the future of keeping Lake George protected. But science alone isn’t enough. It takes a community. The LGA’s strength has always come from the people who care about this place: residents, visitors, businesses, municipalities and partners who know that clean water is not a guarantee, but a shared responsibility.
In the years ahead, we will honor the legacy of those who came before us while boldly pursuing the innovations and partnerships required to protect Lake George in the face of unprecedented environmental change.
Thank you for being a part of this mission to keep Lake George clear and clean for generations to come. We’re proud to stand with you as protectors of one of the most extraordinary – and smartest – lakes in the world.

“The amount of data collected on Lake George over the past decade is truly amazing. ... I think that a lot of lessons being learned on Lake George can be extrapolated and applied elsewhere ...”
– New York State Senator Dan Stec, representing the Lake George region
“The data we collect provide critical information that helps us better understand the status and fate of water quality in the Queen of American Lakes.”
– Dr. Kevin Rose, Jefferson Project Director
In 2024, the Jefferson Project – a collaboration between the LGA, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and IBM — celebrated over a decade of transformative work. What began as a vision to make Lake George the Smartest Lake in the World is now becoming a model for lake protection efforts in other parts of New York State and beyond.
Today, the Jefferson Project continuously monitors Lake George with a suite of real-time sensors, weather stations, tributary monitoring sites and vertical profilers. This system regularly collects over a quarter billion data points per year, capturing complex interactions between climate, nutrients and water quality across the Lake and its watershed.
Together, the LGA and the Jefferson Project use this information to respond to emerging threats and deepen our understanding of long-term water quality changes. From investigating HABs to guiding nutrient reduction strategies and modeling stormwater impacts, this science allows us to act with precision and urgency.
Over 250,000,000 data points collected.
26 different sampling locations regularly visited across the watershed.
11 tributary monitoring stations operated.
7 weather stations operated.
4 vertical profilers deployed in six different locations across the Lake.
Lake George’s clarity has remained relatively stable over the past 40-plus years. In 2024, there was a minor improvement measured over the previous two years.
>> Stable water clarity over many decades is an indicator of good Lake health.
In 2024, water temperature at 3-feet depth hit 68-degrees Fahrenheit, nearly a week earlier than prior years (2021-2023).
>> While this allows an earlier date for comfortable swimming, this also means that deep mixing stops earlier in the season, which limits oxygen transport to the Lake bottom. Warm water earlier in the year can have negative effects on the ecosystem.
While variable throughout the Lake, the amount of chloride has not increased for nearly a decade and mean annual values have decreased since 2021.
>> This trend could reflect the LGA’s efforts to reduce road salt application in the watershed.
Full ice cover is defined as a complete freeze from the south end of the Lake to the north end. The number of winters without full ice cover has been increasing since 1990 — there has been 9 years without full ice cover in the last 35 years compared to only three years without full ice cover from 1908 to 1990.
>> This contrast could be linked to the warming climate, alongside environmental shifts such as later turnover and shorter winters.
2024 resulted in:
• 200 daily forecasts produced
• 19,992,000 data points produced by forecasts
• 4 periods with bloom conditions based on temperature forecasts
• 0 algal blooms observed
>> A confirmed toxic HAB requires chlorophyll concentration of >5ppb and algal toxics to be found. A confirmed toxic HAB has never been observed on Lake George.
Since 1991, the LGA’s Floating Classroom has educated children and adults on all-things Lake George, from Lake history and ecology to how to become a responsible steward. But when 4th generation Lake Georgian Kayla Grant first stepped onto an LGA Floating Classroom, she never could have imagined how that experience would shape her future. Now a student at SUNY Plattsburgh majoring in Environmental Planning and Management, and an employee of Lake Champlain Watershed Alliance, Kayla is focused on becoming a full-time environmental steward in her own right. We caught up with Kayla to chat about growing up in Lake George, her interactions with the LGA and how she has taken lessons learned through the LGA into her adult life:
LGA: Tell us about your childhood.
KG: I was raised right outside of the village in the Lake George watershed. I’m grateful for where I grew up and for the Lake George culture. Living in a tourist town can come with ups and downs, but it’s a beautiful thing to grow up in the Adirondacks.
LGA: When did you first hear about the LGA?
KG: I learned about the LGA while in elementary school. Our class participated in a Floating Classroom trip for the first time, and then again when I was in high school.
Since 1885, the LGA has worked alongside residents, businesses, volunteers, educators and local leaders who care deeply about protecting Lake George. Their voices and their actions reflect the heart of our mission: keeping Lake George clear and clean for generations. The stories and individuals highlighted in this section shine a light on how science becomes action and how our community drives lasting impact in our watershed.
LGA: What stood out about your Floating Classroom experience?
KG: I remember how cool it was to look at plankton and to have other interactive experiences while on board the Floating Classroom. It opened my viewpoint on what types of careers I could pursue. Both Floating Classroom trips gave me a foundation for understanding how humans could impact the environment. I couldn’t stop wondering, ‘why aren’t we doing more to protect Lake George and our community?’
LGA: And now you’re studying this topic in college?
KG: Yes, I’m majoring in Environmental Planning and Management and minoring in Economic and Environmental Sustainability at SUNY Plattsburgh. The school introduced this major during my freshman year, so I was the first person to sign up and likely will be the first person to graduate with this degree. I’m focused on policy work and management plans and I’m learning how to connect the barrier between the environment and the people that live there. After school, I want to work with low-income communities or other people impacted by limited access to clean water.
LGA: What about your work with the Lake Champlain Watershed Alliance (LCWA)?
KG: I work for Sea Grant, but on the New York side under the LCWA. Most of the work I do is educating program participants about the watershed and some research, too. I was interested in the job because it seemed like a good opportunity to explore environmental education. It feels like a full circle from my Floating Classroom experiences, since I’m the instructor now.

The LGA Bay by Bay initiative was created to meet people and their communities in the place they care about most on the Lake. Whether that is a bay, point, village or shoreline on the Lake, our goal is to educate, engage and empower property owners to support our Lake protection programs and to protect their personal investment by doing their part, too. To highlight just one Bay by Bay event from 2024, we sat down with Glenburnie residents Doug and Pam Chase to chat about their love for the Lake and their experience hosting a Bay by Bay in their home:
LGA: Can you tell us about your history and connection to Lake George?
D&PC: Pam’s family began coming to Lake George in the 1960s. We rented on Cotton Point and Fish Point south of Bolton for many years until we finally purchased a home at the northern end of Lake George on Black Point Road. In the early 70s Doug and I were married and began spending much of the summer at the lake with my parents. Doug had been a Jersey shore boy until this introduction to lake life. How he enjoyed the wide open boating on beautiful Lake George! We now have a home in Glenburnie spending six months of the year with gorgeous mountains, clean water and family and friends. Our four
daughters and families join us throughout the summer to meet and make memories together. The saying over the door is a family motto: “The Lake is where cousins come to make best friends.”
LGA: When did you first hear about the LGA, and what inspired you to get involved in the organization?
D&PC: If you visit or live on Lake George you naturally hear about the LGA. We want to protect the Lake because we care so much about the Lake and the surrounding area. Without a protected Lake, the quality of the water diminishes. All activities on and around the Lake are affected. And being part of the LGA is a nice way to meet new people in the community who share common goals and interests.
LGA: Can you tell us about your Bay by Bay experience?
D&PC: We volunteered and hosted a Bay by Bay from our home in Glenburnie. It was great fun to share our love of the Lake with friends in our community and visiting family. The Floating Classroom, holding about thirty persons, educated its passengers on the health and activity of our Lake. We measured water movement, depth and clarity, plankton life, etc. What a wonderful learning experience!
LGA: What’s your message for others considering hosting?
D&PC: We encourage other Lake residents to extend this opportunity to their community, friends and families. It is important to to be aware and understand specific threats presented in the various areas of our 32-mile-long Lake George. Each area has an influence on the whole. Let’s work together to keep Lake George the “Queen of the Lakes.” If we can assist anyone with their decision to host, we may be contacted.
The LGA is pleased to partner with dedicated members to host Bay by Bay gatherings in their special place on the Lake. If you are interested in hosting in your area, please contact LGA Development Director Tyra MacGuffie at: tmacguffie@lakegeorgeassociation.org
Road salt is one of the most serious threats to Lake George — but also one of the most solvable. That’s why the LGA works closely with municipalities and businesses to implement smarter, sciencebased alternatives. One of the most effective methods is salt brining: applying a 23% salt-water solution before a storm to prevent ice from bonding to pavement. It’s the same concept as buttering a pan before frying an egg, so that the food doesn’t stick. This proactive approach significantly reduces the total salt needed and keeps more chloride pollution out of the Lake. Fort William Henry is one standout example. With guidance from the LGA, the team has adopted brining and other best practices across its 18-acre property. We spoke with Safety Coordinator Jennifer Clark to learn more about her team’s success and ongoing commitment to protecting the Lake:
LGA: Why do you care about the Lake, personally?
JC: I was born and raised in Lake George on the side of French Mountain. Growing up, I worked at Fort William Henry for five summers. I’ve seen development on the Lake increase over time — and through fishing the Lake — have seen damage to our ecosystem. This is my home. I care about keeping it clean.
LGA: How did you first become aware of the impact of road salt?
JC: I attended the LGA’s 2020 Salt Summit when the Fort hosted it that year. I learned a lot as a participant and became convinced that we could and should do something about salt reduction. Afterwards, I pitched the idea to my boss, and she let me make changes.
LGA: Tell us about your salt reduction initiatives.
JC: It was just me that was gung-ho at the Fort, to start. I don’t blame anyone for not jumping in right away because it can be hard to change old habits. So, I started out by using a walk-behind hand unit to brine sidewalks up and down Route 9, since our property used to reach out that far. I was also trying to prove that if I could walk up and down a big hill brining this way, then anyone else could do it, too.
Then, once we started brining as a team, we didn’t at first pay a ton of attention to dew points and other considerations, we just wanted to get the practice in place. We immediately noticed a difference in parking lots and recognized that we didn’t have as much ice buildup after a storm and could cut down a lot of clean-up time of snow and ice during and after storms. Now, it’s standard for us to apply a pre-treatment of brine if we know a storm is coming.
LGA: What’s your message to other maintenance crews or property owners around the Lake regarding road salt reduction?
JC: I encourage all properties to attend an LGA summit to learn more information. Knowledge is power and you have to know before you ‘say no.’ We are willing to share our mistakes and experiences to help others with making the decision to help with salt reduction. We know it’s working on our property.

2024 marked the second LGA Lake CleanUp Day — and it’s becoming a signature event that’s only growing. Removing trash from the Lake and shorelines is one of the simplest, most accessible ways anyone can protect the Lake. Jane LaBombard, a multigenerational Lake Georgian, embodies what it means to be a Lake Protector:
LGA: Tell us about your connection to Lake George.
JL: I grew up going to my grandparents’ camp in Huletts Landing that they built when my mom was a teenager. My grandparents were longtime community members of Huletts Landing — and now their house is our family house. I’ve traveled throughout the United States and I think we have the best Lake in the country, which is why I feel so strongly about protecting it.
LGA: What made you decide to get involved with the LGA?
JL: My mom was actually a board member for a long time! So, I knew about the organization through her. I also graduated with my master’s from RPI right around the same time that the Jefferson Project started, so that made me more interested as well. Overall, I think being a member of the LGA and being engaged through
different events makes me feel connected to preserving the Lake. I have a direct influence on the watershed by being a member and that feels good.
LGA: What made you decide to get involved in the LGA’s Lake George CleanUp Day?
JL: My nieces and nephews joke that I’m the aunt who always reminds them to clean up their trash when we’re hanging out on the Lake. I’m always picking up litter anyway, so participating in this event just makes sense. I think that CleanUp Day is the easiest way to be an environmental steward because you don’t have to understand science, and the change is immediately noticeable.
LGA: Can you tell us about Race to the Lakes?
JL: Yes! This is a race put on by Adirondack Runners. In every race, we donate the proceeds to an organization of our choice. As Director of the ADK 7 Mile Race to the Lakes, I’m able to choose the beneficiary of the proceeds. In 2024, I chose the LGA as the beneficiary because I really want to keep donations local to the Lake George area. In 2025, I’m giving money to local fire departments, which is an idea I got while participating in CleanUp Day.
LGA: If you could say anything to other residents or Lake George visitors, what would it be?
JL: Lake George is beautiful and supposed to be fun. A polluted Lake George is not fun!
The LG100 is a distinguished group of individuals, families and organizations who have each committed to contributing $100,000 over five years to support the work of the LGA. Growing from the foundation of the LG30, these donors form the nucleus of sustaining support for the LGA’s leadership and long-term impact. Their investment ensures that Lake George remains clear, clean and protected for years to come.
