PUTTING THE POWER OF PROTECTION

Dear Fellow Lake Protectors, In 2022, the LGA’s first full year after the merger, we demonstrated the power of our united team. We both grew and refined our organization in ways that enable us to effectively drive forward our mission to protect Lake George. At the forefront of that progress: Harnessing digital technology that puts the power of protection in the hands of everyone.

The Lake Protector Profile App, now used by more than 500 LGA members, profiles over 9,300 properties in the Lake George basin, informing and empowering people to take protective action like never before. With the Lake Protector program, we are establishing a culture dedicated to enduring Lake protection, which is so essential to our shared success.

Going hand-in-hand with this innovative leap forward is our continued partnership in the Jefferson Project, which is, at this very moment, cracking the coding of harmful algal blooms (HABs), the most visible

threat to the Lake, fed by increasing nutrients from wastewater and stormwater runoff. The Project’s breakthrough research directly informs our solutions for reducing the risk of more and bigger HABs as well as other stressors to Lake George. From science to solutions, we are providing a working model for protection of fresh waters anywhere.

Recognizing that a healthy Lake George environment and economy are mutually dependent, the LGA has also empaneled a Council of Business Advisors to lead the way in fostering active participation of the regional business community in our work to keep Lake George clear and clean for future generations.

OUR ORGANIZATION

The Lake George Association is the preeminent Lake protection entity dedicated to safeguarding The Queen of American Lakes in Upstate New York. The LGA has architected and advanced a science-guided, investment-driven model of freshwater protection designed for adaptation and scaling across the country and world-wide.

The LGA brings together the world-class science of the The Jefferson Project freshwater research partnership and the Lake George Waterkeeper, with input from our Council of Science Advisors; the dedicated volunteer efforts of our Community Scientists; committed public and private partnerships; community education; public policy advocacy; and direct investments in protection to deliver an unsurpassed level of care for a Lake unrivaled in its beauty and cleanliness.

More than 150 businesses from across the Basin have signed the LGA’s Business Compact on the Economic Imperative of Protecting Lake George. Through this document, business leaders affirmed the vital role Lake George plays in the economy of our entire region

and pledged their commitment to direct protective actions and public policy advocacy in support of the Lake’s legendary water quality.

Our groundbreaking protection programs augment the Basin-wide protection programs founded by the LGA itself or in collaboration with multiple public and private sector partners. These include the Lake George Septic Initiative and SafeSepticSystems.org, the Lake George Road Salt Reduction Initiative, the Lake George Mandatory Boat Inspection Program, and the West Brook Conservation Initiative for stormwater protection.

Founded in 1885 as the first lake conservation organization in the country, the LGA supplies expertise and resources to address unprecedented and intensifying water quality threats. We educate, inspire, and empower all who love the Lake to do their part in keeping this unique natural treasure clear and clean for generations to come.
