2021 Lake George Association Annual Report

Dear LGA Supporters,

Thank you for all you do for Lake George.

When I look at the lengthy list of supporters in this 2021 Annual Report, I am more encouraged than ever about the future of our Lake. Bay-by-bay, home-by-home, business-by-business, people are generously investing in our many science-guided Lake protection programs — and, just as important, taking direct protective actions on their own properties to combat stormwater and wastewater pollution, invasive species, and excessive road salt use.

The threats to our Lake remain very real and intense, as we have seen from the emergence of our first harmful algal blooms and expanding infestation of the hemlock woolly adelgid invasive species. But, overall, the clarity and cleanliness of Lake George remains at world-class levels and we — the LGA and all of you — are better prepared than ever to keep it that way.

The LGA’s 2021 merger with The FUND for Lake George brought the best of the two organizations together with a mandate to strengthen our science, our community outreach and education, our fundraising, and our advocacy — because Lake George needs and deserves more and better protection.

Among our numerous 2021 accomplishments, with your generous support, the LGA:

• Developed and began the complex data gathering that serves as the foundation for our groundbreaking new Lake Protector program (see more below);

• Hosted our first Bay-by-Bay community education and engagement events;

• Rallied the regional business community to support our Business Compact on the Economic Imperative of Protecting Lake George;

• Launched our online Water Quality Reporting Tool;

• Drew more than 200 in-person and virtual attendees from 14 states to our 6th Annual Road Salt Reduction Summit; and

• Successfully integrated the legacy LGA and FUND staffs into a powerful Lake protection team.

Going forward, we’re excited to be nearing a full launch of our Lake Protector program, through which we will provide participating property owners with Personalized Protection Profiles for their properties and direct assistance from the LGA’s science and technical staff in implementing curated protection plans.

Protecting Lake George for the long-term will require watershed-wide collaboration and a personal protection commitment on the part of everyone who loves the Lake. I know our Lake community is up for the challenge, and your LGA is here to help lead the way.

The Lake George Association is the preeminent Lake protection entity dedicated to safeguarding The Queen of American Lakes in Upstate New York. The LGA has architected and advanced a science-guided, investment-driven model of freshwater protection designed for adaptation and scaling across the country and world-wide.

The LGA brings together the world-class science of the The Jefferson Project freshwater research partnership and the Lake George Waterkeeper, with input from our Council of Science Advisors; the dedicated volunteer efforts of our Citizen Scientists; committed public and private partnerships; community education; public policy advocacy; and direct investments in protection to deliver an unsurpassed level of care for a Lake unrivaled in its beauty and cleanliness.

In 2021, we launched the most ambitious and, potentially, most meaningful protection program in our history — calling on property owners, businesses and organizations across the Lake George watershed to become Lake Protectors and take direct protective actions on their properties to address the Lake’s greatest threats: stormwater and wastewater pollution, invasive species, and excessive winter road salt use. This growing community of Lake Protectors will dramatically increase and accelerate our protection progress, as is so urgently needed in this time of unprecedented and escalating threats.

Also in 2021, the LGA and our Council of Business Advisors, supported by more than 150 businesses from across the watershed, published the Business Compact on the Economic Imperative of Protecting Lake George. Through this document, business leaders affirmed the vital role Lake George plays in the economy of our entire region and pledged their commitment to direct protective actions and public policy advocacy in support of the Lake’s legendary water quality.

Our groundbreaking new protection programs will augment the breakthrough Basinwide protection programs founded by the LGA itself or in collaboration with multiple public and private sector partners. These include the Lake George Septic Initiative and SafeSepticSystems.org, the Lake George Road Salt Reduction Initiative, the Lake George Mandatory Boat Inspection Program, and the West Brook Conservation Initiative for stormwater protection.

Founded in 1885 as the first lake conservation organization in the country, the LGA merged with The FUND for Lake George in 2021 in an historic collaboration of expertise and resources to address unprecedented and intensifying water quality threats. We educate, inspire and empower all who love the Lake to do their part in keeping this unique natural treasure clear and clean for generations to come.

(2) Effective as of July 1, 2021, The Lake George Association, Inc. (LGA) and The FUND for Lake George, Inc. (The FUND) were merged. The LGA was the surviving entity, and all of the assets and liabilities of The FUND were assumed by the LGA. No consideration in excess of The FUND’s assets and liabilities was transferred as a result of the acquisition.

(3) The LGA incurred one-time Management and General Expenses related to professional fees and other costs associated with the merger totaling $255,031 during the year ended December 31, 2021.
