We Protect Lake George, Together!

2023 YEAR IN REVIEW: OUR LAKE. OUR FUTURE.
Dear Friends of the Lake George Association,
As we look back on 2023, the LGA Board and Staff are filled with immense gratitude for the dedication, generosity, and support that you have shown to the Lake George Association. Together we made significant strides in our mission to keep Lake George clear and clean, now and for future generations. With this report, we share our achievements with you.
Program Successes
In 2023, we successfully launched and expanded several key programs. Chief among them is the Lake Protector program, a comprehensive community engagement initiative. The first Annual Lake Protector Summit was highly attended, and our first-of-its-kind Lake Protector Profile app grew to be in use by nearly 700 property owners. Also noteworthy: The Jefferson Project celebrated 10 years of ground-breaking lake science, and the LGA’s advocacy work resonated around Lake George and the State of New York.

Community Engagement
Connecting with our community has been fundamental to our work since 1885. Only together can we protect Lake George. To that end, we hosted numerous educational events and activities, including 9 Bay-by-Bay gatherings at homes around the Lake, the 8th annual Salt Summit with record-breaking attendance, the first Annual Lake Protector Summit, and a full season of Floating Classroom learning excursions for more than 2,000 school children and adults. We are also grateful to our members for making the 2023 Gala our most successful ever.
Partnership and Collaboration
With our partners, we advance Lake protection and develop complex synergies between conservation, commerce, and community. Teamwork with The Jefferson Project, Lake George Park Commission, our Councils of Science and Business Advisors, WIT Advisers, and Lake George Waterkeeper Chris Navitsky is critical to the health of Lake George.
Financial Stewardship
Thanks to your generous contributions, we raised more than $3 million in 2023. These essential funds ensure our work will continue. Indeed, none of our achievements would be possible without the incredible support from individuals like you. Your commitment to Lake George and the LGA inspires us every day.
Thank you for standing with us. Together, we responsibly leverage the science, the innovation, and the advocacy necessary for the enduring protection of Lake George.
With deepest gratitude,

Leigh Youngblood Interim Executive Director

Our Mission Guides Our Work

LAKE PROTECTION IN ACTION
650+ signed up for the new Lake Protector Profile App, which recommends protective actions for every developed property in the Lake George basin. See for yourself at lakegeorgeassociation.org/app.
Newly designed Lake Protector exhibit was installed in the Lake George Visitor Center
Cultivating Leadership
It was a full house of fully engaged residents, business owners, and municipal leaders at the 1st Annual Lake Protector Summit
A talented and enthusiastic group of young professionals formed the LGA’s Fourth Wave group, dedicated to protecting Lake George now and for future generations. Not long after, they organized the new Clean Up Lake George event on September 17 in Lake George Village. Learn more on page 10.
Members at the annual Gala broke the ceiling with a record amount of donations to the LGA’s Lake Protection programs. Just as significant, Board and Staff honored one our best with the inaugural presentation of the Killeen Lake Protector Award to Judy Killeen, wife of visionary Jeff Killeen. Learn more on page 15.
Pursuing the Science of Protection
2023 marked 10 years of The Jefferson Project’s unprecedented collaboration between Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (science), IBM Research (technology), and the Lake George Association (advocacy), aimed at understanding the impacts of human activity on fresh water and how to mitigate them.
ACROSS OUR COMMUNITY
9 Bay by Bay gatherings bring Lake Protection education to 400 lakeside residents
$40,000 granted to the Town of Lake George to expand its salt reduction program with a brine-making co-op
More than 270 showed up in person and online for the 8th Annual Salt Summit — record high attendance focused on reducing road salt without reducing safety.
$30,000 in grant money offered to property owners to offset septic system engineering costs
To mark this milestone, the trio released “Clear Science, Clear Lake: 10 Years of Breakthroughs for Lasting Lake Protection.” Read the report at LakeGeorgeAssociation.org/jpreport.
The Floating Classroom, an education favorite since 1991, returned to prePandemic attendance levels in 2023, with 1,503 kids and 678 adults coming aboard to explore the science of keeping Lake George clear and clean.
For the second annual Aquatic Invasive Species Monitoring Event in August, 70 Community Science volunteers scoured Lake George, looking for known and new invasive species. No new invasives were found, but the group did document about 100 new locations of known invasives species.
Building Out Our Team
Staff is the front line with the community and our partners. We made two important hires in 2023 to keep connections strong: Nancy Hawley as Marketing and Communications Director, and Lindsey Kenna as Education for Action Manager.

A GROUP OF YOUNG PROFESSIONALS PROTECTING
LAKE GEORGE NOW AND FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
Fourth Wave is an influential group of young professionals and business leaders united in a shared passion for protecting Lake George. Together, their actions ensure that Lake George remains clear and clean for future generations.
In its first year, Fourth Wave made a significant impact within the Lake George community through multiple fun-raising events, including mixers, trivia nights, and a Floating Classroom outing. Their inaugural summer season concluded with the first annual “Clean Up Lake George” event, drawing multiple corporate sponsors and more than 100 volunteers to clean up the shores of Lake George.
Why Fourth Wave?

Throughout history, there have been three defined periods (or ~waves~) of environmental activism:
1. Land conservation (national parks);
2. Protective legislation (safeguarding wildlife and curbing pollution); and
3. Business and marketing partnerships to reduce emissions and increase product safety.
The Fourth Wave is an amalgamation of all three, combining technology, businesses, partnerships, policy leaders, nonprofits, advocates, and communities for maximum impact.

The LG100 grows from the heartwood of the LG30 that has been central to our Lake protection successes — from aquatic invasive species prevention to road salt reduction, and more. New and more ominous threats, particularly harmful algal blooms and hemlock woolly adelgid — demand a level of commitment commensurate with the complexity of solving these unprecedented challenges.
This distinguished group of individuals, families, and organizations demonstrates an uncompromising financial commitment to the LGA’s steadfast leadership in keeping Lake George clear and clean for the next century.
The LG100 forms the nucleus of sustaining support vital to our success, attracting a growing array of investors who share a passion for ensuring the sustained protection of Lake George.

The Lake George Association thanks our more than 300 guests and our generous sponsors for making our Summer Gala at The Sagamore Resort in July of 2023 so incredibly successful. The threats to our Lake’s water quality from harmful algal blooms, the hemlock woolly adelgid, and other challenges have never been greater than they are today – and your support for science-guided Lake-protection programs has never been more important.

Killeen THE LAKE PROTECTOR AWARD
The Killeen Lake Protector Award is named after Jeff Killeen, former Chairman of the Board for The Fund for Lake George and Board Chairman of the newly merged Lake George Association. Jeff was a true visionary when it came to safeguarding Lake George. He united all of us around lake protection like no one else, and with tireless commitment, he ensured that our investment in the Lake paid off.
Jeff carried Lake George in his soul and this award pays tribute to all that Jeff gave to the Lake: his deep passion, steadfast belief, and unrelenting attitude in pursuit of Lake Protection. In honor of Jeff's steadfast spirit to keep Lake George clear and clean, we presented this inaugural award to his wife, Judy Killeen.

Water Resource Services
Recognizing that a healthy Lake George environment and economy are mutually dependent, the LGA has also empaneled a Council of Business Advisors to lead the way in fostering active participation of the regional business community in our work to keep Lake George clear and clean for future generations. Council members bring the business community’s perspective and business acumen as key partners in our Lake protection initiatives and were the driving force behind creation of the Business Compact on the Economic Imperative of Protecting Lake George. More than 150 area businesses have signed the Compact, attesting to the value a healthy Lake George holds for their businesses, and to their commitment to acting and advocating on behalf of the Lake’s water quality.
