Somos quienes cruzaron fronteras con esperanza, y quienes hoy construyen puentes con amor. Cada historia que compartimos en estas páginas es un reflejo de esa riqueza, de esa lucha silenciosa que muchos viven día a día.
Hoy, más que nunca, es importante reconocer que detrás de cada platillo tradicional, cada negocio familiar, cada sonrisa bilingüe, hay historias de valentía. En medio de debates sobre inmigración, políticas cambiantes y barreras que aún existen, nuestra comunidad sigue adelante. No por falta de obstáculos, sino por abundancia de fe.

We are those who crossed borders with hope, and those who now build bridges with love. Every story we share in these pages reflects that richness, that quiet struggle many live through each day.
Now more than ever, it’s important to recognize that behind every traditional dish, every family-run business, every bilingual smile, there are stories of courage. In the midst of immigration debates, shifting policies, and barriers that still exist, our community keeps moving forward, not because there are no obstacles, but because there is an abundance of faith.

Este mes celebramos más que nuestras raíces, celebramos el sabor que nos une. Peazo e Perro, un vibrante food truck venezolano local, está conquistando Savannah con su menú lleno de alma latina: hamburguesas, hot dogs, salchipapas, pepitos, tequeños y mucho más.
Conoce la historia detrás del sabor en nuestra entrevista con sus fundadores: tres emprendedores venezolanos—Liz Jiménez, Carolina Jiménez y Andy Escalona—que están conquistando paladares y corazones con su food truck Peazo e Perro. Su trayectoria es una de esfuerzo, sazón y fe en el sueño americano.
“Queremos que cada bocado cuente una historia,” nos dijeron. “Una historia de sabor, esfuerzo y orgullo venezolano.”

¿Cómo comenzó todo?
Andy nos cuenta: “Al principio cada uno tenía su empleo, y este proyecto nació como una necesidad económica extra. Nos unimos los tres y comenzamos con un carrito de perros calientes, vendiendo solo 10 hamburguesas. El público nos impulsó a crecer, y así expandimos el menú.”
¿Qué consejo le darían a otros inmigrantes?
Liz responde con sinceridad: “A veces uno piensa que por no hablar el idioma o por ser recién llegado no puede lograr sus metas.
Pero sí se puede. Este país te abre las puertas. Solo hay que documentarse, leer, buscar apoyo y, sobre todo, creer en uno mismo.”
Carolina agrega: “No es fácil, pero vale la pena. Lo más importante es nunca dejar de creer en ti. La constancia y la perseverancia son claves para alcanzar el éxito.”
Andy concluye: “Los latinos vinimos a aportar. Somos más, estamos sumando, haciendo las cosas bien y respetando las leyes.”
¿Qué desafíos han enfrentado?
Liz comparte: “El idioma y la falta de contactos fueron los mayores retos. No sabíamos cómo llenar una planilla o dónde quedaba la alcaldía. Pero eso nos motivó a esforzarnos más. Hoy seguimos avanzando con muchas ganas.”
¿Qué viene para Peazo e Perro?
Con entusiasmo, anuncian que pronto lanzarán otro food truck en una nueva área. “Se vienen cosas
buenas,” nos dicen, “y ya les estaremos contando.”

This month, we celebrate more than our roots; we celebrate the flavor that unites us. Peazo e Perro, a vibrant local Venezuelan food truck, is taking Savannah by storm with its menu filled with Latin soul: hamburgers, hot dogs, salchipapas, pepitos, tequeños, and much more.
Learn the story behind the flavor in our interview with its founders: three Venezuelan entrepreneurs—Liz Jiménez, Carolina Jiménez, and Andy Escalona—who are conquering palates and hearts with their food truck, Peazo e Perro.
Their journey is one of hard work, seasoning, and faith in the American dream.
“We want every bite to tell a story,” they told us. “A story of flavor, effort, and Venezuelan pride.”

Their food is much more than delicious: it's a tribute to tradition, family, and the joy of sharing.
How did it all begin?
Andy tells us: “At first, everyone had their own jobs, and this project was born out of extra financial need. The three of us joined forces and started with a hot dog cart, selling just 10 hamburgers. The public encouraged us to grow, and so we expanded the menu.”
What advice would you give to other immigrants?
Liz answers honestly: “Sometimes you think that because you don't speak the language or because you're a newcomer, you can't achieve your goals. But you can. This country opens doors for you. You just have to educate yourself, read, seek support, and, above all, believe in yourself.”
Carolina adds: “It's not easy, but it's worth it. The most important thing is to never stop believing in yourself. Perseverance and consistency are key to success.”
Andy concludes: “Latinos came to contribute. There are more of us, we're adding up, doing things right, and respecting the law.”
What
challenges have they faced?
Liz shares: “The language and the lack of contacts were the biggest challenges. We didn't know how to fill out a form or where the mayor's office was. But that motivated us to push harder. Today we continue moving forward with great enthusiasm.”
What's
next for Peazo e Perro?
They excitedly announce that they will soon launch another food truck in a new area.
“Good things are coming,” they tell us, “and we'll be letting you know.” Peazo e Perro doesn't just serve delicious food—it serves inspiration.

En una tranquila noche de noviembre en Hilton Head Island, la vida de Breiner Daniel Puerta González, un joven venezolano de 19 años, fue arrebatada frente al cine Northridge Cinema 10. Breiner había llegado recientemente desde Florida, buscando oportunidades y seguridad. En cambio, se convirtió en víctima de un homicidio que sacudió a la comunidad local y despertó preguntas urgentes sobre la violencia, la vulnerabilidad y la visibilidad.
Tras meses de investigación, la justicia finalmente llegó. El 5 de agosto de 2025, las autoridades confirmaron la captura de Nayquan Gadson, responsable de la muerte de Breiner. Gadson fue acusado de asesinato, robo a mano armada y posesión
de un arma durante un crimen violento. Su arresto trae cierre a un capítulo doloroso, y un llamado renovado a la vigilancia comunitaria.
INMIGRACIÓN, MIEDO Y EL SILENCIO QUE DUELE
En comunidades inmigrantes de todo el Lowcountry, historias como la de Breiner no son aisladas. Muchos recién llegados, especialmente quienes no tienen documentos, viven con miedo de reportar crímenes o actividades sospechosas. La presencia de programas federales como 287(g), que permite la colaboración entre la policía local y ICE, ha intensificado ese temor. Para algunos, llamar a la policía
parece arriesgar la deportación. Para otros, el silencio parece más seguro que la justicia.

El caso de Breiner se resolvió porque la gente habló. Las cámaras de seguridad, las pistas comunitarias y una investigación persistente llevaron al arresto de Gadson. Este resultado nos recuerda que reportar sí importa, y que la justicia es posible cuando trabajamos juntos.
Las autoridades locales del condado de Beaufort siguen enfatizando que las víctimas y testigos no deben temer alzar la voz. Aunque el programa 287(g) sigue siendo polémico, no exige que los oficiales pregunten sobre el estatus migratorio cuando alguien reporta un crimen o busca ayuda.
Debemos seguir abogando por políticas que protejan, no castiguen a quienes se atreven a hablar. Y debemos construir puentes entre la policía y las comunidades inmigrantes, basados en el respeto, la transparencia y la humanidad compartida.

JUSTICE, COMMUNITY, AND COURAGE A REFLECTION ON THE NORTHRIDGE CINEMA TRAGEDY AND THE POWER OF SPEAKING UP

On a quiet November evening in Hilton Head Island, the life of 19-year-old Breiner Daniel Puerta Gonzalez was cut short outside Northridge Cinema 10. A young Venezuelan immigrant, Breiner had recently moved from Florida, seeking opportunity and safety. Instead, he became the victim of a fatal shooting, one that shook the local community and raised urgent questions about violence, vulnerability, and visibility.
After months of investigation, justice was finally served. On August 5th, 2025, authorities confirmed the arrest of Nayquan Gadson, the man responsible for Breiner’s death. Gadson was charged with murder, armed robbery, and possession of a weapon
during a violent crime. His capture brings closure to a painful chapter and a renewed call for community vigilance.
IMMIGRATION, FEAR, AND THE SILENCE THAT HURTS
In immigrant communities across the Lowcountry, stories like Breiner’s are not isolated. Many newcomers, especially undocumented individuals live in fear of reporting crimes or suspicious activity. The presence of federal immigration enforcement programs like 287(g), which allows local law enforcement to collaborate with ICE, has deepened that fear. For some, calling the police feels like risking
deportation. For others, silence feels safer than justice.
BUT SILENCE CAN BE DEADLY.
When crimes go unreported, perpetrators remain free. When witnesses stay quiet, justice stalls. And when communities lose trust in the very systems meant to protect them, everyone suffers.
THE POWER OF REPORTING—AND THE RIGHT TO BE HEARD
Breiner’s case was solved because people spoke up. Surveillance footage, community tips, and persistent investigation led to Gadson’s arrest. This outcome reminds us that reporting matters and that justice is possible when we work together.
Local law enforcement in Beaufort County continues to emphasize that victims and witnesses should not fear coming forward. While 287(g) remains controversial, it does not require officers to ask about immigration status when someone is reporting a crime or seeking help.
We must continue to advocate for policies that protect, not punish those who speak up. And we must build bridges between law enforcement and immigrant communities, rooted in respect, transparency, and shared humanity.
FROM TRAGEDY TO TRUST
Breiner’s story is heartbreaking. But it must also be a call to action. We honor his memory not only by seeking justice, but by ensuring others like him feel safe, seen, and supported.

LA HISTORIA DETRÁS DEL MES DE LA HERENCIA HISPANA
Cada septiembre, el Lowcountry se llena de color, cultura y orgullo, pero ¿cómo comenzó el Mes de la Herencia Hispana?
Comenzó de forma modesta. En 1968, en pleno auge del movimiento por los derechos civiles, el presidente Lyndon B. Johnson firmó una resolución que declaraba la Semana de la Herencia Hispana. ¿El objetivo? Reconocer las contribuciones de los hispanoamericanos al tejido de la sociedad estadounidense. Pero una semana
no bastaba para honrar siglos de historia, arte y activismo.
Así que en 1988, el presidente Ronald Reagan amplió la celebración a un mes completo, del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre. ¿Por qué esas fechas? El 15 de septiembre marca los aniversarios de independencia de Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua. México celebra el 16, Chile el 18, y el mes culmina justo después del Día de la Raza, una
jornada que honra la herencia indígena e hispana en toda América Latina.
Pero el Mes de la Herencia Hispana no se trata solo de banderas y fiestas. Se trata de rendir homenaje a quienes abrieron camino, desde el líder sindical César Chávez hasta la jueza de la Corte Suprema Sonia Sotomayor. Se trata de reconocer a los héroes cotidianos: maestros, artistas, enfermeras y emprendedores que dan forma a nuestras comunidades.
Aquí en el condado de Beaufort y sus alrededores, la herencia hispana está entretejida en nuestras calles, nuestras escuelas y nuestras historias. Se escucha en la música salsa de los festivales locales, en las voces bilingües de nuestras aulas, y en los negocios familiares que mantienen vivo el espíritu de nuestros vecindarios.
Este mes, celebremos no solo de dónde venimos, sino hacia dónde vamos. Porque la herencia hispana no es solo historia, es un legado vivo.

Every September, the Lowcountry lights up with color, culture, and pride—but how did Hispanic Heritage Month begin?
It started small. In 1968, during the height of the civil rights movement, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a resolution declaring Hispanic Heritage Week. The goal? To recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the fabric of U.S. society. But one week wasn’t enough to honor centuries of history, art, and activism.
So in 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded the celebration to a full month— from September 15 to October 15. Why those dates? September 15 marks the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates on the 16th, Chile on the 18th—and the month ends just after Día de la Raza, a day that honors Indigenous and Hispanic heritage across Latin America.
But Hispanic Heritage Month isn’t just about flags and fiestas. It’s about honoring the trailblazers who paved the way—from labor leader César Chávez to Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. It’s about recognizing the everyday heroes: the teachers, artists, nurses, and entrepreneurs who shape our communities.
Here in Beaufort County, Hispanic heritage is woven into our streets, our schools, and our stories. It’s in the salsa music at local festivals, the bilingual voices in our classrooms, and the family-owned businesses that keep our neighborhoods thriving.
This month, let’s celebrate not just where we come from—but where we’re going. Because Hispanic heritage isn’t just history—it’s a living legacy.

Para muchos en nuestra comunidad hispana, crecer significa aprender a caminar entre dos mundos, el de nuestras tradiciones y el de nuestras aspiraciones.
Ser hispano en Estados Unidos es una experiencia rica y compleja. Es hablar dos idiomas, cocinar con sazón heredada, y trabajar con el corazón lleno de esperanza. Es recordar a nuestras familias que cruzaron fronteras con fe, y a nuestras madres que nos enseñaron que el respeto y la dignidad no se negocian. Es saber que cada paso que damos, lo damos por nosotros… y por ellos.
Durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, celebramos nuestras raíces, pero también nuestro florecer. Porque crecer no es olvidar de dónde venimos, sino usar esa historia como impulso. Es transformar los “no se puede” en “sí se pudo”. Es mirar atrás con gratitud y mirar adelante con valentía.
El crecimiento personal también implica sanar. Romper ciclos. Atreverse a decir “yo merezco más”. Implica aprender a valorarnos no solo por lo que hacemos, sino por lo que somos. Y en ese proceso, descubrimos que nuestra herencia no es solo un legado cultural, es una fuente de fuerza.
Cada historia hispana es una historia de superación. Desde el joven que traduce para su familia, hasta la emprendedora que convierte su sazón en negocio, todos estamos creciendo. Y ese crecimiento, aunque a veces silencioso, es revolucionario.
Este mes, celebremos no solo nuestras fiestas y sabores, sino también nuestros logros internos. Reconozcamos que crecer como persona es el acto más valiente que podemos hacer. Porque cuando uno de nosotros crece, toda la comunidad se eleva.

Personal growth isn’t always measured by visible achievements. Sometimes, it’s found in the silences we break, the roots we embrace, and the dreams we choose not to abandon. For many in our Hispanic community, growing means learning to walk between two worlds, our traditions and our aspirations.
Being Hispanic in the United States is a rich and complex experience. It’s speaking two languages, cooking with inherited flavor, and working with hearts full of hope. It’s remembering our families who crossed borders with faith, and our mothers who taught us that respect and dignity are nonnegotiable. It’s knowing that every step we take, we take for ourselves… and for them.
During Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate our roots, but also our blossoming. Because growing doesn’t mean forgetting where we come from; it means using that history as fuel. It’s transforming “it can’t be done” into “yes, it was done.” It’s looking back with gratitude and looking forward with courage.
Personal growth also means healing. Breaking cycles. Daring to say “I deserve more.” It means learning to value ourselves not just for what we do, but for who we are. And in that process, we discover that our heritage isn’t just a cultural legacy, it’s a source of strength.
Every Hispanic story is a story of overcoming. From the young person who translates for their family, to the entrepreneur who turns their flavor into a business, we are all growing. And that growth, though sometimes quiet, is revolutionary.
This month, let’s celebrate not only our festivities and flavors, but also our inner victories. Let’s recognize that growing as a person is the bravest act we can do. Because when one of us grows, the entire community rises.
