Los últimos dos meses han marcado un momento decisivo en la política migratoria de EE. UU., y en cómo la historia recordará este periodo del país. La falta de voluntad del Congreso para reformar las leyes migratorias, junto con los esfuerzos de la administración Trump por imponer deportaciones a un nivel extremo, han sido calificados por muchos como una táctica grotesca, inhumana y que viola el debido proceso y el derecho al habeas corpus.

THE U.S. AT AN IMMIGRATION CROSSROADS BY: Eric Esquivel – La Isla Magazine President & Publisher The past two months have marked a pivotal moment in U.S. immigration policy and the way history will look back on this country's time period and our lack of will by our legislative branch to reform immigration law and how the Trump administration sought to enforce deportations at an extreme level that in many eyes can be seen as a grotesque and inhumane scare tactic that violates due process or habeas corpus. This in addition to ICE agents acting like a secret police force across our country whisking people away without warrants, wearing masks and no proper identity of the organization they represent or 14 LAISLAMAGAZINE.COM • JULIO 2025

Intensified immigration enforcement, sweeping ICE raids, and strict travel bans have sparked fear, protest, and growing concerns across the country— especially among mixed-status families and immigrant communities. • Escalated Enforcement: Militarystyle ICE operations, National Guard deployments, and arrests in “sensitive” spaces like courthouses have drawn legal challenges and nationwide demonstrations. • Visa and border controls: Expanded travel bans, paused visa processing, and

¿QUÉ ES “NO KINGS”? El movimiento “No Kings” (Sin Reyes) surgió como una protesta nacional contra el autoritarismo, el poder concentrado y los símbolos de supremacía, tanto políticos como culturales, en los Estados Unidos. Aunque no todos los manifestantes compartían una afiliación política específica, el mensaje es claro: “No hay lugar para reyes en una democracia.” Las protestas se esparcieron por ciudades como Nueva York, Los Ángeles, Chicago, Austin y Atlanta entre 2020 y 2022, con pancartas que decían “No Kings, No Masters”, “Power to the People” y “Contra la tiranía, unidos”. WHAT IS “NO KINGS”? The “No Kings” movement emerged as a national protest against authoritarianism, concentrated power, and symbols of supremacy— both political and cultural—in the United States. Although not all protesters shared a specific political affiliation, the message was clear: “There is no place for kings in a democracy.” Protests spread to cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Austin, and Atlanta between 2020 and 2022, with banners reading “No Kings, No Masters,” “Power to the People,” and “Against Tyranny, United.” The movement gained traction especially among young communities, artists, activists, and people who reject both the monarchy and symbols of authoritarian power, even within their own government. A MOVEMENT BORN OF DISCONTENT “No Kings” was not limited to monarchs; It was a symbolic stand against authoritarianism, elitism, and unchecked power in all its forms. Protesters cited police brutality, the militarization of politics, systemic racism, and the rise of personalist leadership as reasons for taking to the streets.
As one protester in Washington, D.C., put it: “We are not subjects. We are citizens. This is not a kingdom, it’s a republic.” The imagery was bold: scratched crowns, murals of broken thrones, and chants evoking historical revolutionary cries. Artists led much of the movement’s visibility, using graffiti, music, and installations to spread the message.

WHO PARTICIPATED? The movement was remarkably diverse. Young Latinos, African Americans, Asian Americans, whites, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, and citizens from all over the country participated. For many Spanish speakers, the message resonated deeply. “We didn't come to this country to kneel before another kind of king in disguise,” said Mariana, a Guatemalan-born organizer in Houston. “We came seeking freedom and respect, not a new form of oppression.” 22 LAISLAMAGAZINE.COM • JULIO 2025
Many Latino groups joined the protest with their own messages, such as “No kings or dictators, the people decide” and “No more empires.” Social media played a key role in coordinating bilingual events and ensuring the Latino community was informed and included. LOOKING AHEAD Although the protests have subsided since their peak, the “No kings” sentiment has left an indelible mark on civic activism in the United States. It redefined what it means to oppose

authoritarianism, not only abroad but also at home. It also created a new space for multicultural and multilingual dialogue about democracy, power, and the voice of the people. Cada 4 de julio, los estadounidenses se reúnen para conmemorar el nacimiento de una nación. El Día de la Independencia celebra el momento en 1776 en que el Congreso Continental adoptó formalmente la Declaración de Independencia, marcando la separación de las 13 colonias del dominio británico. UN VIAJE EN EL TIEMPO • La primera celebración pública del Día de la Independencia tuvo lugar en Filadelfia el 8 de julio de 1776, cuando se leyó en voz alta la Declaración al sonido de la Campana de la Libertad. • Massachusetts fue el primer estado en reconocer oficialmente la festividad, el 3 de julio de 1781. 24 LAISLAMAGAZINE.COM • JULIO 2025

Every July 4th, Americans come together to mark the birth of a nation. Independence Day commemorates the moment in 1776 when the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, signaling the 13 colonies’ break from British rule. A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME • The first public Independence Day celebration took place in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776, when the Declaration was read aloud to the sound of the Liberty Bell. • Massachusetts led the way in July 3rd , 1781 by officially recognizing the holiday • On July 4th , 1801 the White House was hosting its own Fourth of July festivities. 26 LAISLAMAGAZINE.COM • JULIO 2025
• On July 4th, 1851, Lowell, Massachusetts, introduced the quirky “Horribles Parade,” poking fun at military pomp. • Congress made the holiday official for federal workers in Washington, D.C. on June 28th, 1870 • 1938, Congress recognized it nationwide. • The current 50-star flag made its debut on July 4, 1960, after Alaska and Hawaii joined the Union in 1959. FOUNDING FIGURES Thomas Jefferson, just 33 at the time, penned the Declaration with input from John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and William Livingston. While the document was adopted on July 4, only

El desafío de la administración Trump a la ciudadanía por nacimiento, actualmente revisado por la Corte Suprema de EE. UU., es de suma importancia porque pone a prueba un principio fundamental de la Enmienda 14 de la Constitución. Cualquier fallo podría tener consecuencias de gran alcance para millones de personas y la propia definición de ciudadanía estadounidense. SESIÓN DE JUNIO 2025 La Corte escuchó los argumentos orales el 15 de mayo, Trump v. CASA, unificando tres casos de tribunales inferiores presentados por Maryland, Washington y Nueva Jersey. limitaran las medidas cautelares a nivel nacional, argumentando que solo deberían aplicarse a los demandantes individuales o a sus estados, y no a todo el país. LOS MAGISTRADOS MOSTRARON ESCEPTICISMO ANTE EL INTENTO DE TRUMP: • Las juezas liberales (Sotomayor, Kagan, Jackson) subrayaron que restringir la ciudadanía generaría niños apátridas y violaría la interpretación de la Enmienda 14 según el precedente de Wong Kim Ark. • Los jueces conservadores (Gorsuch, Thomas, Alito) y el presidente del Tribunal Supremo Roberts mostraron disposición a
