FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Members,

This past week our Club lost one of its true legends in Jerry Morris. As a long time residents of the Colony and Members of the Club the Morris’s are part of Lago Mar’s DNA. From running his Jerry’s Kids group several times a week to volunteering to help the Club any way he could, he became a friend to everyone who met him. Mr. Morris was a gentlemen of the game and we as a Club are better because of him. He will be sorely missed.

The back chipping area is now open again for your enjoyment. We have moved the canopy to the front tee so you have more space to practice from. The tee area is for chipping onto the practice green only. No full shots may be hit from the tee to any other targets nor may carts be parked on the grass tee. Please be respectful to other members who want to use that area for practice and do not hit full shots.

We are all very fortunate to be part of a beautiful Club that is filled with respect for each other as members and staff. If you encounter an issue with another member when enjoying the Club please find a staff member and make them aware. This removes you from any uncomfortable situations that may arise.

This summer has felt hotter than we can ever remember. Please make sure to begin hydrating before your round and during it as well. If you begin to feel the effects of the heat come in right away. Your safety is one of our greatest concerns.

I look forward to seeing you at the Club soon!

Summer is in full swing, and so should your golf game!

Whether you're hitting the links early to beat the heat or planning your next club tournament, we ’ ve got you covered with updates, and events to make this July a hole-in-one.

GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE

Dear Members,

As we move into the heart of summer, we remain hopeful that the dry conditions we've experienced this year will begin to shift. Increased rainfall would not only improve overall turf health and growing conditions, but also help replenish our lakes and canals an important part of our algae management strategy.

We’re pleased to share that the sodding work around the remainder of the Founders Course surrounds has been completed, and the newly sprigged areas are establishing well. In addition, the mulch beds behind the 4th green have been grassed.

You may also notice several areas on the course where we ’ re aggressively targeting weeds with herbicide applications. While this may temporarily result in some bare patches, the warm, wet summer months give us the perfect window to be proactive. The Bermuda grass will quickly fill in these treated areas and improve overall turf quality.

As always, we appreciate your continued support and understanding as we work to keep Lago Mar in top condition.

Sincerely, Cody

GOLF HANDICAP COMMITTEE

Effective June 7, 2025, the Handicap Committee will be implementing some new procedures. Please be sure to read and share this information with your playing partners:

All players MUST be on the tee sheet to post a score. Any score posted that does not match up with the tee sheet will be converted to a penalty score. Members that utilize their own carts for late afternoon rounds must be sure to put themselves on the tee sheet.

We have seen a significant increase of members using the “Practice Round” link. Practice rounds are allowable; however, players must inform the pro shop PRIOR to play that they will be playing a practice round or non-conforming round. The practice round link can then be used when the player receives the email. Penalty scores will be applied for failure to follow this procedure. Practice round link should NOT be used if other members in the group post scores.

In the event a round is not finished due to weather or some other unforeseen circumstance, players MUST enter their scores in the GHIN app using the hole-by-hole feature to post. The system will then calculate a handicap index.

For members that play a significant number of 9-hole rounds, the committee may adjust the members index to reflect a comparable index similar to what an 18-hole score will produce. Members that have excessive “Failure to Post” notices will have their handicap placed in a WD mode. This will indicate that the member cannot use their current index for club events. If a player then decides to play in a club event the committee will assign a handicap index of the players lowest index for the past 12 months.

The USGA/GHIN ADMIN system implemented a “Golfer Audit” feature in 2025. The committee will begin to use this feature monthly when reviewing summary reports and evaluating each members posting habits. This USGA audit may adjust a players index up or down based on USGA formulas.

Additionally, we are looking into a course re-rating, hole handicap assignment review, local rules sheet and some other items with the golf staff.

Please feel free to reach out to the golf staff or committee members if you have questions or need clarification on something.

Sincerely,

2025 Team Match Play Tournament

FOOD AND BEVERAGE

Hi Lago Mar Members,

It’s been a pleasure getting to know more of you and hearing your feedback on some of the new menu items thank you for sharing your thoughts!

I’m especially looking forward to the upcoming Flag Day BBQ and the wine tasting event both are shaping up to be fantastic.

Also exciting: the walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer have officially landed in the new kitchen! Progress is moving right along, and I can’t wait to share more updates with you soon.

One thing I truly appreciate is seeing how much potential there is to grow and move forward. There's a real passion here for making the club the best it can be, and I'm honored to be part of that journey.

Last Friday’s dinner was amazing thank you to everyone who came out to dine with us and helped make it such a great night. Your support and excitement mean a lot, and it inspires us to keep raising the bar. We’re ready to bring even more to the table and show you everything we are capable of!

See you around the club!

Warm regards,

FOOD AND BEVERAGE

Beef Empanadas

2 tablespoons olive oil plus more for brushing on empanadas

½ red onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 jalapeño, deseeded and minced

½ cup diced medium red potatoes

Salt and pepper

1 pound ground beef

1 can diced tomatoes with green chilies

1 teaspoon chili powder

1 teaspoon cumin

Juice of ½ lime

¼ cup cilantro, chopped

10 empanada dough discs

Make the filling. Heat a large lidded saucepan over medium heat, add olive oil until the oil shimmers. Add the red onion and cook until soft, about 3-4 minutes. Add the garlic, jalapeño, potatoes and salt and cook for 10 minutes, until the potatoes are soft. Add the ground beef, tomatoes with the sauce, chili powder, cumin, & bay leaves, breaking meat apart with a wooden spoon, for 4-5 minutes until brown and broken apart. Add the lid on the saucepan and simmer for 5 minutes. Take the lid off, stir, and simmer for another 10 minutes. Allow the liquid to evaporate. If there is too much liquid, feel free to strain. Squeeze lime juice into the pot, combine, and stir in cilantro, until soft. Make the empanadas. Place an empanada dough disc down and add two tablespoons of the meat mixture on it. Fold over and with a fork, press down to seal to prevent filling from getting out. Cooking. Deep fry in oil at 350° until empanada dough gets crispy.
