Canyon Median Design

Staff is working with a contractor to redesign the Canyon Road medians to provide a better look, reduce water usage, and minimize pesticide use. The location is an extremely challenging due to the snow operations and heat of summer. Staff has made presentations to the Transportation Advisory Board and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for additional input.

Outdoor Classroom

Library staff has requested a place for outdoor learning. A task order has been issued to evaluate and design a concept for an outdoor classroom between the Mesa Public Library and the Betty Erhart Senior Center. Library staff has started the public input process phase. Look for more opportunities to share your thoughts and opinions with library staff. Please contact Gwen Kalavaza, Library Manager at gwen.kalavaza@lacnm.us for more information or to share your thoughts.

Trail and Open Space Management Plan

As a recommendation from the 2023 Integrated Master Plan the County is reviewing, combining, and updating several trail and open space documents into a single guiding “Trail and Open Space Management Plan”. This plan will be based on the 2022 Trailhead Assessment Plan, 2009 Trail Management Plan (revised 2022), 2013 Los Alamos Community Trail Plan, 2015 Open Space Management Plan, 2023 Restoration Feasibility Assessment, 2022 Los Alamos Americans with Disabilities Plan and the 2023 Integrated Master Plan. This process will have several opportunities for community feedback and participation. The result is to have a single guiding document for the community as look to the future for managing our trails and open space so all users and abilities can enjoy our natural environment. We were delayed in getting the public feedback process moving forward. We look forward to community input sessions throughout the summer. Reach out to Eric Peterson, Open Space Specialist at eric.peterson@lacnm.us for more information on information sessions. Our professionals from Sites Southwest will be facilitating the meetings.

White Rock Skate Park

Staff is working with a contractor to collect public feedback and replace the elements at the White Rock Skate Park with new elements. Public input started with an open survey that was completed by over 90 skaters, and was the foundation for several images presented to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board in May. We are looking for construction later this summer.

Field Renovations - Dara Jones, Hope and Bomber Fields

The athletic field maintenance was a topic during the development of the 2023 Integrated Master Plan, as such funding was allocated in FY24 budget to begin renovation on the athletic fields. The first fields in the mix will be Daria Jones Field, Hope Field and Bomber Field. This project is anticipated to start the summer of 2024. The project will consist of leveling the playing surfaces, new turf, laser grade and revitalize the infield and adjust the irrigation heads. Bids have been received and the contract was awarded on April 22, 2024. The fields are scheduled to be completed this summer. Staff is already looking at phase two of the field renovation for next year.

Kinnikinnik Park Accessible Trail

Staff secured a grant from the NM Outdoor Recreation Trails + to develop a 3/4 mile looped trail that is ADA accessible. The Trail will connect From PEEC to make a loop in Kinnikinnik Park. The trail will allow for those with physical challenges to enjoy the beautiful scenic area. Additional accessible loops were part of the Integrated Master Plan's observations in increasing use for all community members.

Playground Renovation - 37th Street and Pinon (Rocket) Park Playground

Underutilized Amenities - Tennis Courts & Playlots

The renovations for both playgrounds started in September of 2023 with public meetings at each playground. Feedback was additionally captured from 1st graders at Pinion Elementary School and 3rd graders at Mountain and Aspen Elementary. The children provide great feedback on the types of amenities they would like to see incorporated at these playgrounds. Two options have been on display and seeking additional feedback at the playgrounds and both libraries. Look for the final proposal to be at the Parks and recreation Advisory Board Meeting this summer. These two playgrounds are in the process now of renovations. LAC is seeking feedback from focus groups in the desires for the two playgrounds. Both of these were identified in the level of service and ADA Audit as needed to be renovated. A key focus is on the accessibility and inclusivity of these playgrounds.

Shade at Ashley Pond

Staff is increasing the size of the picnic pads and adding shade to Ashley Pond. The area of the work is adjacent to the Trinity Parking lot with access from the existing handicapped parking spaces. The pads will be accessible with a covered shade area so all can enjoy the benefits of the pond area. The construction documents are prepared and the structures are ordered. Staff is expecting the shade to arrive early this summer for installation.

Court Renovations - North Mesa Tennis and East Park Basketball

This project will begin a significant upgrade of athletic courts in the community. The North Mesa Courts will be demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. We will start with a new base that is more stable and allow for a better playing experience. We expect to change at least one court into a tennis court as part of this process. The East Court Basketball Court needs attention as well. We are hoping to have these projects moving forward by next spring. The courts will be updated to meet ADA requirements so that all users in our community feel welcomed and can enjoy the amenities. Staff has discussed with the tennis and pickle-ball community on the renovations. Our contractor is in the process of the design and construction documents phase. Staff is looking forward to late summer or early fall construction on the courts.

The Community Services Department is looking at the use of two tennis courts, one handball wall, and two playlots within Los Alamos County to see if they are the best facility use for the community. We are collecting survey responses for each location during the month of September. Each survey provides a short description of the facility and a picture. According to the National Park and Recreation Association Performance Review which was benchmarked during the development of the Integrated Master Plan, for similar community populations Los Alamos County has an excess of 11 courts and 14 playgrounds. The North Mesa Courts are scheduled for demolition and rebuild in the summer of 2024.

Staff provided the results of the survey and recommendations to the Parks and Recreation Board. No Additional actions are planned at this time. Thank you to all community members that shared your thoughts and inputs.

BMX Track

Los Alamos County is seeking design and construction services for a Bicycle Moto-Cross (BMX) Track which will require sanctioning by USA BMX. The track will be built on County owned property, located at North Mesa Park Road, on top of the existing facility. This is a design-build project, the design-build team shall include, a state licensed engineer or architect, and a contractor properly licensed in New Mexico for the type of work required. The vendor will seek stakeholder and user group input for three options on the BMX track. The county is working with USA BMX to finalize the agreement to design a facility for use. Look for community conversations on the project coming late summer or early fall.

Golf Course Improvements

Los Alamos County received two bids for the re-issued Request for Proposal (RFP). The project includes the improvement of features on holes 4 –18, including tees, bunkers, greens, permanent restrooms, targeted cart path upgrades, and deferred maintenance. The project also includes improving holes 1– 3, reconfiguring the driving range to improve safety, and other practice area updates. Contracts are signed and in place with Mid-America, performing the Course renovations, and Judge Netting, performing the practice range netting project. The construction kick-off meeting took place on Nov. 29, 2023. A notice to proceed has been issued, and the project manager is on-site for preliminary work. Due to the anticipated condition of the course, County Council approved reduced Golf Pass rates for 2024 Season on Dec. 12, 2023. Construction with Mid-America began on Jan. 16, 2024. Judge Netting, for the new practice range net, as part of the Golf improvement project began their phase of the project on April 15, 2024.

Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA)

CSD has been working for the past two years on updating process, plans and programs to meet the best practice standards of Parks and Recreation Agencies. The national standards feature 164 standards that are agency reviewed through the self-assessment and then reviewed by a peer group of trained professionals. Currently there are 192 accredited agencies across the United States and only 1 in New Mexico. The program assures that the CSD is operating with the best practices for forward looking agencies and how they serve the community. Our peer review occurred in May and we will be waiting for the results of the site visit which will occur in October.

Brewer Arena Grandstand and ADA Improvements

Staff secured a grant from the NM Department of Finance and Administration to assess, review, design and establish construction documents of the project. This project will kick off this summer and involve listening sessions and additional public input. Our goal is to have a couple of conceptual plans for community input at the Fair and Rodeo on August 3 and 4.

Artificial Turf Study and ADA Recommendations

The existing chiller is reaching the limit of its expected life-cycle (21 out of 25 years of service) and is already presenting malfunctions. In its current condition, the existing chiller cannot be expected to make a skating ice sheet in a reliable manner.

Public Works is the lead on the chiller evaluation and replacement and is working with the Recreation Division. Initial evaluation has occurred with developing a scope of work for the project and rental of chiller unit for the 2023 – 2024 & 2024 - 2025 seasons. A permanent chiller is not an off-the-shelf product and requires to be custom-designed for the Los Alamos County Ice Rink, in addition to long lead times for the manufacturing process, is the result of a twoyear process to acquire a new chiller. Additionally, there is concern for the concert slab that supports the ice during the winter season, as it is also nearly its expected lifecycle. The Request for Proposal (RFP) team met on March 6th, 2024 to discuss the RFP scope of work for the permanent chiller, with additional options that could be taken into consideration, such as the concrete slab, and shade structure, depending on need assessment studies.

Staff has is preparing a Request for Proposal (RFP) to look into the possibility of implementing artificial turf fields in the community. The study would look at specific fields, alignment, turf, lights, amenities, bleachers, fencing, netting, scoreboxes, and scoreboards. The fields would be upgraded to meet ADA requirements for fields and support the communities Dark Sky initiative. Look for community conversations later this summer or early fall.

North Mesa Recreation Mater Plan

Staff are preparing a Request for Proposal (RFP) to look at the North Mesa Park area. The area is from the soccer field along North Mesa Drive and east to the playground. This is the largest park area for the county to develop. This project is important as the conversation moves forward on the North Mesa Housing Plan. The project provides a forum to discuss the future needs of North Mesa and think long term about the future uses of the space. The community conversations regarding this project will occur this fall into winter.

Benefits of Water Fitness

Aquatic exercise promotes and enhances physical and mental fitness. The water’s unique properties allow the pool to provide an environment for people of all abilities. Buoyancy creates a reduced impact that is easier on joints and water resistance challenges the muscles. The beauty of water is the ability to offer aerobic activity, resistance training and flexibility all at the same time. Water is thicker than air, so muscles get stronger.

Fitness Classes

Deep Water Fun & Fitness: Zero impact, comfortably paced class that uses the water’s resistance to improve your fitness, flexibility, range of motion, strength, and balance.

Therapy Fun & Fitness: Low impact, warm-water class held in the therapy pool. Includes working on range of motion, toning, stretching and balance. Participants with orthopedic concerns, arthritis, asthma and other conditions have found this class to be beneficial. The maximum class size is 18 students.

WaterWorks!: A low impact, but effective water aerobics class designed to improve flexibility, range of motion, strength, muscle tone and cardiovascular endurance while using the resistance of the water to cushion the feet, knees and back. May use equipment including noodles, belts, bands and boards. Water shoes recommended.

Aqua Zumba: Splashing, stretching, twisting – even shouting, laughing, hooting, and hollering! Salsa, Merengue, Disco, and more in chest deep water for a great low impact but challenging workout. Integrating the Zumba philosophy with traditional aquatic fitness, Aqua Zumba classes blend it all together into a workout that's cardio-conditioning, and body-toning. Water shoes recommended.

Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga (SUP): Take your fitness routine to the mat -- a floating mat. SUP Yoga is a combination of paddleboarding and yoga practice. It challenges you to find another level of balance and focus your mind, all while floating atop the water. Think it sounds hard? Take a deep, centering breath; it's easier than you think, and perfect for both yoga and paddleboarding newbies.

Safety Note: All deep-water classes use flotation belts for support. Swimming skills are not necessary. Participants should be comfortable in deep water. If you arrive late or leave class early please include time for an individual warm up and cool down. Students work at own level.

OPEN SPACE & TRAILS

Located on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the plateau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town’s limits. White Rock lies on the edge of the 1,000-foot deep White Rock Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande.

The canyons and mesas in and around the County are linked by 100+ miles of trail network. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety to choose from. The trails offer a quick escape from the busy pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views.

Looking for a Trailhead?

Watch for the “Trailhead” signs along major roads throughout the County.

Find more information about the County Trail Network on-line: losalamosnm.us - Click on “Recreation”

Share the Trail: These are multi-use trails for pedestrians, equestrians, and bicyclists. Bicyclists should yield to all other users.

MANHATTAN PROJECT NATIONAL

HISTORIC PARK

Manhattan Project National Historical Park tells the complex story of one of the most transformative events of the 20th Century. The Manhattan Project ushered in the nuclear age with the development of the world’s first atomic bombs. The project started in 1942 and Los Alamos was one of three secret cities of the Manhattan Project, the other two being located in Hanford, Washington and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the waning days of World War II – forever changing the world.

Stop at the park’s visitor center for an introduction to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, a National Park Service Passport Stamp, and free walking tour maps.

VALLES CALDERA NATIONAL PRESERVE

Volcanic eruptions created the 13-mile-wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera. The preserve is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and a rich ranching history. Whether you are enjoying a groomed trail in a developed area or venturing into the backcountry, remember you are traveling in an environment with unpredictable wildlife and changing weather conditions. Be sure to layer up with insulating, waterproof clothing, wear sunglasses, use sunscreen and carry water. With a little bit of preparation, many exciting activities await you.

Admission & Entry Permits

Entrance Fee Waived

Valles Caldera National Preserve is a fee park; however, at this time the entrance fee is being waived. While the entrance fee is being waived, Valles Caldera will not be able to sell or issue passes.

Backcountry Vehicle Permit

Up to 35 backcountry vehicle permits will be available each day during the summer season (May - Oct) as conditions allow. No permit is needed to visit the Entrance Station, or to hike and bike.

Self-Guided Hikes Daily

Visitors can check out a self-guided booklet from the entrance station for the 1.5-mile La Jara Trail and the 1-mile Pond Trail.

During Regular Park Hours, check in at the Entrance Station

LIVING WITH WILDLIFE

The Pajarito Plateau is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including DEER, BLACK BEARS, RACCOONS, BOBCATS, SKUNKS, ELK, MOUNTAIN LIONS, FOXES, COYOTES, and more.

INLos

Alamos County we often live or play in habitats used by these wild animals. With a better understanding of these animals, we can coexist safely.

Be BEAR Aware…

Bears eat almost anything available (i.e. insects, nuts and berries, plant matter, fish, birds, small mammals, and carrion), but rarely kill larger prey. Bears who have found available human sources, such as trash cans, gardens, and fruit trees, are more likely to seek them again. Follow these tips and tricks to minimize encounters as bears begin to look for food:

n Never intentionally feed bears to attract them for viewing.

n Don’t leave pet food or food dishes outdoors overnight.

n Never leave fruit from trees and bushes to rot on the ground as it is a powerful attractant to bears.

n Bring in bird feeders at night. These are high-calorie treats, and bears may stay and look for other food sources nearby.

n Never put meat or sweet-smelling food scraps in your compost pile.

n Clean and store outdoor grills after use. Bears can smell sweet barbecue sauce and grease for miles.

n Store garbage properly at all times. Only put roll carts out the morning of your trash pick up, and use bear-proof containers when available.

What’s wrong with feeding the deer?

Deer eat specific nutritious plants in summer and woody plants in winter. Some of these plants rely on animals like deer and won’t germinate unless they pass through the digestive tract of an animal. When fed by humans, deer will stop foraging for food, negatively impacting the forest’s healthy ecosystem and how it supports all the wildlife of the forest.

Mule deer have specialized digestive tracks that contain specific bacteria to help break down only the plants they are meant to eat and are adapted to. Any human-provided food sources, including hay, apples, corn, etc., are simply not digestible. Fed mule deer often die from starvation with full stomachs of food they cannot digest.

LOS ALAMOS FARMERS' MARKET

Supporting local growers, ranchers and food producers preserves cultural identity and traditions, along with creating valuable community gathering places. It also keeps important food dollars circulating in our hometowns where it is needed most. The Los Alamos Farmers' Market started in 1970 as a great place to support local foods and buy direct from growers and producers.

Passport to the Pajarito Plateau

Ongoing

This is a fun program to get families outside, exploring our beautiful trails together. Los Alamos County, Bandelier, the Santa Fe National Forest, and the Valles Caldera have so many great trails, and now, thanks to support from the Delle Foundation, Clif Bar Family Foundation, Kate Svitek Memorial Foundation, and George and Helen Cowan Trust, we’re giving you an easy way to discover them. Here’s how it works:

1. As you hike the trails inside the passport, look for a wooden post or a bench with a small metal plate on it

2. When you find the post, make a rubbing with your crayon rock

3. Bring the passport back to the nature center after you’ve hiked 2, 5, 8, and 12 trails, and you’ll earn a prize that you can use on your next trail adventure. (On Passport III, come back after you’ve hiked 8 and 12 hikes).

4. If you complete all 16 hikes in any passport, we’ll have something extra special for you.
