MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I am delighted to share with you Korowa’s 2024 Annual Report, which outlines our achievements and operations for the year. Once again, I am filled with pride and gratitude for this vibrant school community. Now in my second full year as Principal, I have had the opportunity to further embed myself in the life of the school celebrating student successes, connecting further with families, sharing stories with past Korovians and continuing to work alongside our dedicated staff to provide an outstanding educational experience.

This year we launched our new Strategic Direction, charting a course for Korowa in 2024 and beyond. Developed in consultation with students, staff, families and Council, this roadmap affirms our commitment to honouring our history while embracing a bold, future-focused vision. Throughout this process, one theme continued to resonate, our School motto, Palma Non Sine Pulvere (no reward without effort). First introduced in 1908, it continues to reflect the spirit of our community. It is not about perfection but about courage, commitment and persistence.

The Class of 2024 has truly exemplified this spirit, achieving exceptional results in their VCE. With a median ATAR of 92.6 and 6% of students achieving an ATAR of 99 and above, they have upheld Korowa’s tradition of academic excellence while pursuing diverse and meaningful pathways. Once again, our students have accepted offers in a broad range of fields, with strong representation across Law, Politics, Business and Commerce, Arts, Engineering and Science related courses. We are proud of their achievements and look forward to following their journeys.

This year also saw continued success in the F1 in Schools program, with our team Hypernova competing in the National Finals in March 2024. Our Year 9 team Undescpacito earned a Wild Card entry to Nationals and received recognition for ‘Best Managed Enterprise’ in their class. Our youngest team, Astronomica, proudly represented Korowa at the State level. Four students from Hypernova then went on to form Surge, a collaborative team, with boys from Blue Mountains Grammar School who competed in the World Championships, and placed 8th place overall out of 55 teams. They also achieved the honour of being the highest ranked majority girls’ team worldwide.

The performing arts program continued to thrive in 2024 with a spectacular Newsies JR. production, Autumn Jazz, the Gala Concert and our many music soirees once again provided rich opportunities for students to develop their confidence and musical ability. Our Senior School Art Exhibition together with our second Junior School Art Show, featured works from ELC to Year 12, highlighting the creative talents of our students and the strength of our visual arts program.

Our sporting program remained an important part of school life, with students enthusiastically participating across a range of GSV, House and co-curricular competitions. While we celebrate achievements and premierships, we continue to place equal value on participation, teamwork, and the friendships formed through shared experience. Whether on the field, in a choir, on stage or in a club, these connections form the heart of the Korowa experience.

I want to thank our entire community, students, families, staff, alumni and Council—for their continued support. It is an honour to lead this School, and I remain inspired by the passion, strength and spirit of our students. Together, we will continue to build a future where every Korowa girl is encouraged to challenge herself, pursue her passions and embrace the joy of learning.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

It is with immense pride and gratitude that I present this 2024 Annual Report, marking another year of extraordinary achievement for our Korowa community.

As I reflect on this remarkable year, I am struck by how our school continues to embody what makes education truly transformational. At Korowa, we understand that excellence is not an accident, but the result of persistent effort guided by our enduring motto: Palma Non Sine Pulvere – no reward without effort. More importantly, we understand that this effort is most meaningful when it is grounded in our values of courage, curiosity, and integrity.

The heart of our success

What sets Korowa apart is not simply our academic results, impressive as they are, but the strength of our community and the exceptional quality of our educators. Under the outstanding leadership of Mrs Booth, our teaching staff demonstrate a level of commitment and expertise that truly distinguishes our school.

Mrs Booth's vision and educational leadership have created an environment where every student is encouraged to reach beyond what they thought possible. Her deep understanding of contemporary pedagogy, combined with her genuine care for each student as an individual, has established a culture where learning flourishes and character is formed. The strategic direction she has launched this year provides a clear roadmap that honours our history while embracing a bold, future-focused vision.

The teaching staff she leads share this commitment to excellence. They understand that their role extends far beyond delivering curriculum – they are mentors, role models and champions of each student's potential. It is their dedication, skill, and genuine care that transforms a good education into an extraordinary one. Day after day,

they demonstrate that teaching is both an art and a calling, inspiring our students not just to achieve academically, but to develop the character and resilience that will serve them throughout their lives.

A community united by values

Our values of courage, curiosity, and integrity are not merely words on a wall – they are lived experiences that shape every aspect of school life. We encourage our students to have the courage to try new things, to speak up for what is right, and to take on challenges that stretch them beyond their comfort zones. We foster curiosity that goes beyond the classroom, inspiring them to question, explore and discover. And we insist on integrity in all things, knowing that character matters more than any achievement.

This values-based approach creates a community where every student is genuinely known and valued. In our consciously small school environment, we celebrate what makes each student unique while ensuring they understand their responsibility to contribute to something greater than themselves.

The strength of our community

The true measure of Korowa lies in the strength of our community – a community that spans generations and extends far beyond our school gates. Our current families, alumni, staff and supporters form an extraordinary network of care and commitment. Together, we create an environment where students feel safe to take risks, to fail and try again, and to discover their own authentic voice.

This community strength is reflected in the trust that families place in us, evidenced by our growing enrolment and the fact that 25.7 per cent of our students have a prior family connection to Korowa. This legacy of trust speaks to the lasting impact of a Korowa education and the deep relationships that are formed here.

Looking forward with confidence

As we look to the future, I am filled with confidence about Korowa's trajectory. Our strong financial position provides the foundation for continued investment in our people and programs. Our master planning process ensures we can accommodate growing demand while preserving the intimate educational experience that is central to our identity.

Most importantly, we remain steadfast in our commitment to developing young women who will be positive forces in the world. In an era of rapid change and complex challenges, we are preparing students not just with knowledge and skills, but with the character, resilience and values they will need to navigate uncertainty and to lead with integrity.

Gratitude and recognition

I want to thank Mrs Booth and every member of our teaching and support staff for their unwavering commitment to our students. Your professionalism, care and dedication create the conditions where excellence becomes possible.

To our students, you are our greatest joy and our highest responsibility. Continue to embrace our values, support one another and remember that with the privilege of a Korowa education comes the responsibility to use your talents in service of others.

To our families, thank you for trusting us with your children and for being such active partners in their education. Your support and engagement strengthen our community and enhance every aspect of school life.

As we conclude another successful year, I am reminded that Korowa's greatest strength lies not in any single achievement, but in the collective commitment of our entire community to fostering excellence, integrity and service. Together, we are preparing young women who will make a meaningful difference in the world – and that is a privilege beyond measure.

OUR COMMUNITY

Korowa is more than a school, it is a vibrant and inclusive community built on connection, shared values and a spirit of support. Our community spans generations and includes our students, families, dedicated staff, alumni, former parents, School Council members, Foundation supporters, Friends of Korowa, volunteers and generous donors. Each plays a vital role in shaping the unique culture that defines our school.

We warmly welcome families from a wide range of cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds. This diversity enriches the Korowa experience and strengthens the sense of belonging. Through reunions, concerts, information sessions and student-led initiatives, we invite our community to stay engaged and connected with school life.

Our School Council, comprised of committed volunteers, plays an essential leadership role. Focused on governance and longterm strategy, the Council ensures the school remains aligned with its values and mission, as outlined in our Constitution, while day-to-day operations are entrusted to our experienced staff.

Parent Satisfaction

At Korowa, we believe that students thrive when they feel happy, safe and supported, and this extends to their families. We are committed to developing a strong sense of belonging across our school community, where parents and guardians feel connected, informed and confident in the support their child receives.

Our commitment to delivering an outstanding education is driven by a dedicated team of expert educators and staff. We continually refine and evolve our programs to ensure that students are equipped with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need for life beyond school.

Equally, we recognise the importance of supporting and engaging our parent community throughout this journey. During the year, we host a variety of events and information sessions designed to educate, connect and involve families, encouraging strong relationships between families and staff and ensuring parents feel supported and empowered.

The strong attendance at these events and the consistent positive feedback we receive underscore our community’s commitment to learning and connection, a hallmark of the Korowa experience.

In 2024, we partnered with The 5Rs Partnership Group to conduct a research study as part of our brand and marketing strategy. The study engaged a wide range of stakeholders, including staff, School Council members, current and prospective parents, and students. The findings were overwhelmingly positive, with a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 56, indicating a high level of satisfaction and a strong willingness among parents to recommend Korowa. Participants praised the school’s supportive and inclusive culture, academic excellence, committed staff and holistic approach to education.

Our Staff

In 2024, we had a total of 149 staff, which is three more than in 2023.

Staff Satisfaction

In 2024, staff responded to the school’s Culture and Engagement Survey. The data from this survey provided great insight to develop a People and Culture strategy to ensure that Korowa evolves to be considered the best school to work at.

OUR STUDENTS

At Korowa, we proudly celebrate what makes each student unique. We recognise that every learner brings their own identity, strengths, interests and aspirations, and it is our privilege to support them on their individual journey.

Our holistic approach to education ensures that every student is nurtured within a safe, stimulating and inclusive environment, with access to rich learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. Through a broad cocurricular program and a strong sense of community, we encourage students to explore, connect and grow in ways that are meaningful to them.

Diversity is woven into the fabric of our school. Our students represent a rich tapestry of cultures, backgrounds and perspectives, with more than 19 languages spoken at home and families coming from over 19 countries. Our community extends across Melbourne, with students travelling from more than 67 postcodes to be part of Korowa .

This depth of diversity is complemented by a strong sense of continuity. In 2024, 25.7% of our students have a prior family connection to Korowa, demonstrating not only the trust placed in us by generations of families, but the lasting impact of a Korowa education.

Student Satisfaction

At Korowa, we believe that student voice is essential to shaping a learning environment where all students feel supported, connected and empowered. Across the school, students are regularly encouraged to share feedback, formally and informally, through their interactions with staff, surveys and targeted initiatives.

This feedback continues to play a vital role in guiding our decisions, particularly in the areas of learning, wellbeing and future planning.

Student Attendance

With 803 students enrolled from ELC to Year 12, maintaining accurate attendance records is a vital part of ensuring student safety and wellbeing. Our teaching staff record attendance using the school’s management system, Synergetic, with clear processes in place across both the Junior and Senior School.

In the Junior School, attendance is marked twice daily, at the beginning of the day and again after lunch. If a student is absent without prior notice, families are promptly contacted to confirm the reason for the absence.

In the Senior School, attendance is recorded for every lesson. If a student is absent without explanation for their first two periods, Student Services contacts their parent or guardian to follow up. Any further absences are managed individually, taking into account the student’s specific circumstances.

For late arrivals and early departures, Junior School students sign in or out through Junior School Reception, while Senior School students do so at Student Services. If a student needs to leave early, prior notification is required from a parent or guardian, or the student must be signed out in person.

If a student becomes unwell during the school day, the School Nurse assesses their condition and determines whether they should be collected by a parent or guardian.

Ongoing concerns around attendance or punctuality are addressed with care and support, guided by the Korowa Student Behaviour Management Policy. Our aim is always to ensure that students remain engaged, supported and connected to their learning.

A YEAR OF MILESTONES AND CELEBRATION

2024 was a truly memorable year, marked by bold milestones and heartfelt celebrations that touched every corner of our community.

We celebrated 30 years of TREK, reconnecting with past and present Trekkers to honour a program that continues to shape confident, capable young people. The 20th anniversary of the German Exchange reunited staff and students who helped establish this enduring partnership.

A special evening recognised 38 Korovians awarded Australian Honours, with sixteen alumni celebrated in person. The spontaneous singing of the School Hymn was a powerful moment of pride and unity.

We also embraced joyful new traditions, including our first Blessing of the Pets, and celebrated creativity and connection through standout events like the Gala Concert, Newsies JR., House Chorals, the Junior School Art Show and the Senior School Art, Design and Media Exhibition.

Our broader community came together through events such as Korowa Connections, the Whole School Cocktail Party, and the Class of 2023 Homecoming. We also celebrated the strength and spirit of our rowing program at the Boat Naming Ceremony, honouring those who continue to shape this legacy.

Together, these moments reflect the heart of Korowa— where tradition, community and bold new experiences continue to shape every student’s journey.

NAPLAN RESULTS

Strong literacy and numeracy skills are the foundation of a quality education and underpin success across all areas of learning. Each year, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the National Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assessments, which provide a snapshot of student proficiency in these core areas.

While NAPLAN is just one of many assessment tools used at Korowa, it offers valuable data that helps track student progress over time and informs the targeted support we provide to meet individual learning needs.

Korowa continues to deliver strong NAPLAN results across all subject areas, reflecting the effectiveness of our teaching practices and our commitment to academic excellence.

Service

As always, it was a busy year for social service activities and fundraising.

While both Junior and Senior School social service events continued to occur and were very successful, it was delightful to see more whole school social service events, where the entire school could learn, celebrate, and fundraise together.

These whole school events included our Annual Shrove Tuesday event to raise funds for our ongoing sponsorship of Australian students within the Smith Family sponsorship program, a celebration of diversity with our Feast for Freedom Day where we enjoyed delicious meals from different countries and supported programs at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Wear it Yellow Day, where every student across the school was encouraged to wear a yellow ribbon, staff where encouraged to wear yellow and we once again dined on delicious food with indigenous ingredients raising awareness and funds to support Children’s Ground.

Other organisations the school has supported include the Malvern Emergency Food Program, Anglicare Vic, the school in Timor Leste, two animal shelters, Banyule Annual Christmas Hamper, 300 Blankets and a youth refuge for homeless young people.

Service is an important part of the school as it helps us connect with each other and learn about what is happening in the wider community of Australia.

In 2025, we will welcome more than 800 students, our largest enrolment in ten years, with an additional Year 7 class confirmed for 2025 and the likely addition of another Junior School class in 2026.

Despite our growth, our purpose remains unchanged: to be a small, girls school where every student is known, supported and inspired to achieve their personal best.

Thanks to continued enrolment growth and disciplined financial stewardship, we have delivered another robust surplus in 2024, with such surpluses used to enhance our educational offering. While we are not driven by profit, we understand that strong financial performance is vital to securing Korowa’s future.

As a not-for-profit school, every dollar is reinvested directly into our students, enhancing programs, learning environments and facilities. This ensures we continue to offer a world-class education now and for generations to come.

Looking ahead, we’re shaping our next master plan with confidence and vision, creating spaces that support exceptional learning, teaching and discovery.
