JULY 2022

Northbridge celebrates 250th Anniversary by Christine Beauchaine Initially, the Native American Nipmuc people lived in and around Northbridge. ”Good water resources'' and access to three different rivers made the area attractive for hunting and fishing. By the year 1704 Europeans had settled in the area. The town was once part of Mendon. Northbridge and Uxbridge broke away from Mendon in 1727 and Northbridge was incorporated as its own entity in 1742. The town is made up of several villages including Whitinsville, Rockdale, Linwood, and Riverdale. Many residents of Northbridge fought in the American Revolution (as well as other wars) and played a key role in the industrial revolution as home to the Whitin Machine Works, which was once the largest manufacturer of textile machinery in the world. Now, a growing town, boasting a population of over 16,000, Northbridge will celebrate its 250th Anniversary this month. The celebration will kick off on Saturday, July 16th at 10:00 a.m. (Rain date is 7/27). The parade will include fire trucks, scouts, and many local organizations. Bands participating in the parade include the Boston Fireman’s Band, MA 54th Regiment, New Liberty Jazz Band, Hot Tamale Brass Band, and the Tony Barrie Band, according to the event’s Facebook page. A call went out on the town’s website in April seeking parade participants. Alicia Cannon, chairman of the celebration committee said the response has

been “outstanding”. The parade route will begin at Crescent Street at NES (Northbridge Elementary School) and end just after the Whitinsville Christian School. The full parade route can be found on the town’s website at https://www.northbridgemass.org/ho me/news/250th-anniversary-celebration. At 6:00 p.m., the gates will open for the fireworks event, which will take place at the Northbridge Middle School (171 Linwood Ave, Whitinsville). That event will include “food trucks, live music, face painting and other activities for kids as well as other vendors” according to the town’s website. The fireworks will begin at dusk. Linwood Ave will be closed from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. for “additional seating and vendors”. Numerous local sponsors have contributed to the event including Polyfoam, Whitinsville Golf Club, Kearns Collision, Crothers Tire, The Crafty Nest, Jack Walker Realty, West End Creamery, Cityscape Appliance Repair, Foxy Travel, Hellen Fuels, Graffiti Works, Koopman Lumber, Blackstone Valley Physical Therapy, Wickstrom Morse LLP, UniBank, Imperial Cars, Whitinsville Water Company, Chick’s Barber Shop, Kapi’s Pub, Jim Morrissette Oil Burner Service, Nydam Oil, Northbridge Association of Churches, Wych Family Dental, Harbro Auto, Omni Control Technology, The Whitinsville Christian School, Tom Berkowitz Trucking, Struggles & Snuggles, Marty Green Properties, Clark’s, Open Sky, and others.

FREEDOM - The Blackstone Valley Tech Class of 2022 Commencement Ceremony concluded with cheers and applause for the graduates as they tossed their caps towards the sky.

Safety Improvements to RT. 146A in wake of crash Recently local and state officials revealed plans for the approved safety improvements slated for Route 146A in Uxbridge. The call for improvements was heard in the wake of an October 2021 crash on Rt. 146A when a high school student was struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle to school. The student was severely injured as a result of the collision. While many called for improvements, a student in a civics class at Uxbridge High School took it upon herself to reach out to Representative Michael Soter’s office to get the attention of local and state officials to make the voices of her and her classmates heard on behalf of their injured peer. State Representatives Michael Soter and Joseph McKenna and State Senator

Ryan Fattman made the announcement in conjunction with officials from Mass DOT District 3, Uxbridge Public Schools, and the Town of Uxbridge. In addition, the civics class that led the project joined the legislators and officials for the release. The plan proposed by MassDOT District 3 was approved by both the Uxbridge Public Safety Committee and the Town’s Select-board. The plan focuses on the stretch of Rt.146A that gives way to the entrance of the High School. Improvements will include yellow flashing overhead signals facing both directions of traffic, a red flashing overhead signal towards the school entrance, ‘Uxbridge High School Next Left/Right’ signs, official ‘school’ marking signs, and wording painted on the roadway indicating a school area.

MassDOT is actively working to procure and install the equipment. Representatives from District 3 stated that it is their goal for the project to be completed by the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year. The legislative delegation explained that they had a tremendous sense of pride in this project as the driving forces behind the changes were the students at UHS. Further, the delegation recognized MassDOT District 3 for their quick work in presenting meaningful improvements within the Rt. 146A corridor. Legislators, local officials, school officials, and students are eager to see the changes implemented so that the area is safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike.
