Communities awarded Clean Energ y Grants
The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced recently more than $7 2 million to cities and towns across Massachusetts to fund clean energy projects The Department of Energy Resources (DOER) selected 42 municipalities to receive Green Communities competitive grants With this announcement, DOER will have awarded more than $191 million to Green Communities in Designation Grants and Competitive Grants since 2010
“We are happy to help our cities and towns move forward with initiatives that create healthier communities and boost local economies,” said Governor Maura Healey “These projects will ultimately save people, businesses and municipalities money and will help Massachusetts achieve energy independence ”
“These projects reflect the hard work and dedication of our local officials to make Massachusetts a healthier, more affordable place for families and businesses,” said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll “We are committed to partnering with our local leaders to support efforts that save cities and towns money and strengthen communities ”
The cities and towns will use the funding for a variety of projects aimed at reducing energy use in their municipal operations These projects include installing high-efficiency lighting, building weatherization, upgrading energy management systems, facility retro-commissioning, and transitioning HVAC systems away from fossil fuels by installing air - or ground - source heat pumps
Seventeen of the communities’ awards are for fuel-switching projects –replacing fossil fuel-fired HVAC or water heating systems with heat pumps Once installed, those projects will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 283 tons annually
“Cities and towns are slashing their energy bills and leading the fight against climate change We’re proud to invest in their leadership,” said Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rebecca Tepper “Local clean energy
projects will make us less reliant on expensive fossil fuels and help lower our overall energy demand, cutting costs for all ratepayers ”
“Massachusetts’ Green Communities continue to reduce energy use, emissions, and utility costs by deploying energy efficiency and renewable energy projects,” said DOER Commissioner Elizabeth Mahony “From weatherization to control systems to heat pumps and solar panels and more, these 42 grant awards support the cities and towns themselves and provide cleaner air and lower costs for their residents and businesses ”
The following area municipalities were included in the selection to receive grant awards:
Municipality
Total Grant Award
Northbridge $125,000
Oxford $233,026
Douglas $100,000
Grafton
$47,424
The proposed projects will leverage more than $2 3 million in utility incentives and yield energy cost savings of $594,842 The 18,664 MMBtus expected in annual energy savings translates to the amount of energy consumed by 145 Massachusetts households The

projects are estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1,330 metric tons annually, roughly equivalent to taking over 246 cars off the road
Under the Green Communities Act, cities and towns must meet five criteria to be designated a Green Community and receive funding The grants provide financial support for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects that further the designated communities’ clean energy goals and are awarded to existing Green Communities that have successfully invested their initial designation grants and previous competitive grant awards Funding for these grants is available through proceeds from carbon allowance auctions under the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) Competitive awards are capped at $250,000 per municipality or $500,000 if applying for comprehensive building decarbonization funding Building decarbonization funding is for projects that are ready for immediate implementation but may extend beyond typical grant implementation times and costs
Additional information on awarded projects and funding amounts can be found on DOER's website

STEAM Lab brings Maple Sugaring to Life for Young Learners Online Wellness Programs Open Registration
Students at the Taft Early Learning Center recently experienced the sweet science and history of maple sugaring through an engaging, hands-on program in the STEAM Lab With the expertise of Sherine Hamade, Visitor Services Supervisor from DCR River Bend Farm and Julie Riendeau from National Parks, students explored the rich tradition of maple sugaring in Uxbridge, combining history, math, and science in a way that made learning
interactive and fun
During the first week of the program, students learned how to measure trees to determine if they were the right size for tapping, reinforcing key math skills
They also explored the science behind changing states of matter watching how maple sap transforms from a liquid to a solid and a gas during the sugaring process Despite chilly temperatures, the learning didn’t stop students were able to "tap a tree" using a dogwood

The following week, students deepened their understanding of maple sugaring history and had the delicious opportunity to taste-test different types of syrup They recorded their preferences and graphed the class data, blending sensory exploration with real-world math applications The event culminated in a special pancake tasting, thanks to the generosity of Mendon Street Kitchen and Holly Gallerani, who prepared and served the pancakes in the classroom
“This program was an incredible way to bring STEAM learning to life,” said Amanda Gallerani, STEAM teacher at Taft Early Learning Center “The students were able to connect history, math, and science with hands-on activities that engaged all their senses It was wonderful to see their excitement as they tapped a tree and compared different types of syrup We are so grateful to our community partners for making this such a memorable experience ”
This program would not have been possible without the support of local experts and community members A

huge thank you to Sherine Hamade and Julie Riendeau for sharing their knowledge, Bert Stewart from Miscoe Hill Farm for donating his delicious maple syrup, and Eli Laverdiere for lending his expertise
Special thanks to Kerrianne Shinnick for volunteering in the classroom and to the Flink and Hopkins families for their generous donation of supplies Their contributions helped make this a memorable and enriching experience for Taft students

SOCIETY PRESENTS:
The Farnum House: Past, Present and Future
Join us on Sunday, April 13th at 1:00 p m at the Community House of the First Evangelical Congregational Church (8 Court Street, Uxbridge) for an in-depth presentation on the history and future of the Cornet John Farnum House Additional parking is available at Saver ’s Bank and UniBank
For over 250 years, the Cornet John Farnum House has stood at the gateway to Uxbridge As the site of the town’s first Town Meetings in 1727, it played a vital role in the early governance of Uxbridge Since 1968, the Town of Uxbridge has owned the house, with the Uxbridge Historical Commission overseeing its use as a historic house museum and the home of the Uxbridge Historical Society Over the years, it has welcomed the community for tours, events, and exhibitions

In 2020 an extensive study and survey of the house was conducted to determine the condition of the structure and its systems The study concluded that the structure of the house was dangerously compromised and would require a full restoration to save the building The results of the study and estimated costs were presented at Town Meeting but due to the high-cost projections, the project stalled, leaving the building unused for safety reasons
Recently, the Arthur R Taft Memorial Trust

Upon completion of the repairs, the Trust will donate the house and its surrounding land, already under the Trust's ownership, to the Uxbridge Historical Society This donation will ensure that the Society can continue to operate the property as a historic house museum, archive, and as community resource for events, programs, and research
The Trust expresses its deep gratitude to Jim Beauchamp and the Uxbridge Historical Society for their
commitment to assuming the significant responsibilities of maintaining and fundraising for the historic Cornet John Farnum House upon its transfer

Free Presentation: Economic Role of the Rivers
Rivers and waterways played a crucial role in industrialization around the world, including here in Central Massachusetts and Connecticut The rivers powered the mills and provided transportation for the manufactured goods But, with industrialization came toxic pollution that made the rivers unsafe for fishing and recreation

Mr Cazeault will give a talk about his observations of rivers and streams around the world, their impact on industry, and his experiences with tainted water, on Saturday, April 5, at 11:00 a m at the Samuel Slater Experience

Companion Planting Demystified; topic for BV Gardeners
Do carrots really love tomatoes? Are beans great with cucumbers, but never with onions? Do roses love garlic? Join the Blackstone Valley Gardeners (BVG) and their speaker Gretel Anspach to untangle this and other mysteries of “Companion Planting ” Gretel comes to us from the MA Master Gardeners Speaker ’s Bureau and is a favorite of the BVG She is not only a Master Gardener, but is currently Chair of the Board of Trustees of the MA Horticultural Society Gretel tends a huge vegetable garden each year in support

of several food pantries in her local area She grows many varieties from seed, and is an expert on what to plant with what – and what not to
Growing your own vegetables, even in small amounts, is a satisfying enterprise If children are involved just watch their wonder when the tiny seed that they planted just a few days ago in a pot turns into a radish! Don’t care for radishes? Then try lettuce – even smaller seeds and an even greater miracle Whether you are a wannabe, a novice or an experienced vegetable grower
you are sure to pick up a few great tips from Gretel’s program Don’t miss the meeting on Thursday, April 10th A hospitality gathering begins at 6:30 p m (save room for dessert) The program begins at 7 p m The BVG meets at the United Methodist Church, 61 Linwood Avenue in Whitinsville There is easy access to the rear of the church and the meeting room Enter the parking lot via the passageway next to Domino’s Pizza on the south side of Church Street BVG meetings are open to the public Annual club dues are $25 a year, and nonmembers are welcome to attend a meeting for a fee of $5

Donated car helps local man move forward
With the average price of a used car in Massachusetts currently over $33,000 and expected to rise, many people are priced out of obtaining these critical tools For Matthew Murphy of Whitinsville, these high prices have pumped the brakes on his ability to make forward progress Thankfully, a generous donor presented him with a life-changing gift that will provide an easier path forward – a donated car
Murphy was awarded a 2006 Honda Civic from the car-donation nonprofit Good News Garage The organization was founded in 1996 as one of the nation’s first charitable car donation programs Over the last 28 years, it has helped car donors give nearly 6,000 vehicles to neighbors in need
Upon being handed the keys to his donated Honda, Murphy said, “Thank you so much for your donation! This will help me so much in achieving my goals ”
According to Good News Garage, high car prices and limited public transportation mean that many lower-income individuals and families have difficulty obtaining steady employment, bringing their kids to school or childcare, buying nutritious food, and meeting other critical needs here in New England The organization also says the need for donated vehicles is at a critical level as prices are expected to rise again Car donations are down and being far outpaced by the demand and need for reliable used cars
Good News Garage awards cars to Massachusetts residents through a partnership with MassAbility, formerly known as the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC) Car recipients must be employed or have a written plan for employment and meet other qualifying criteria This program is administered out of Good News Garage’s Manchester, New Hampshire office Anyone interested in applying for MassAbility can find more information at: https://www mass gov/orgs/massability
For more information or to donate, visit: www GoodNews Garage org Good News Garage is a member of Ascentria Care Alliance, one of the largest human services organizations in New England With locations throughout the region, Ascentria is creating measurable, positive impact in communities by empowering people to reach beyond life’s challenges and thrive For more information, visit ascentria org

Artist prepares for Plein Air Free Workshop
The Blackstone Valley Art Association is honored to have talented oil painter Dianne Panarelli Miller present a free demonstration at our April 15th meeting! This demonstration will be helpful to ALL artists, even if you don’t use oil paints
This workshop is an introduction to how to approach plein air paintings, by learning techniques that can be practiced beforehand at home
First, what is a plein air painting? Simply put, a plein air painting is a painting done on location, usually in an outdoor setting You’ve probably seen this in movies or TV shows An artist stands in front of an easel, painting a lovely meadow, seascape, or rustic barn That painting-on-site is what plein air is all about
Save The Date!
The Northbridge Senior Center is excited to announce the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Plummer Place! This will be a fundraiser for 2025 to benefit and celebrate the Northbridge Senior Center Taking place at the beautiful Pleasant Valley Country Club on June 19th One of the highlights will be “Flamingo”, a fifteen piece all female Big Band specializing in music from the swing era!
~Society ~

The BVAA runs a number of free plein air gatherings throughout the summer, giving our community a variety of opportunities to learn and discuss approaches to painting local waterfalls, lakes, historic buildings, and other locations By attending Dianne’s workshop, you’ll get a sense of what plein air is all about and how to learn some basic skills That way when you attend your first plein air in person you’ll be ready for the fun!
The event will take place at BVAA Open Sky Uxbridge Community Gallery, 5 South Main Street, Uxbridge, MA 01569
This meeting and session is free and open to the public No experience is necessary This workshop is open to members and non-members Feel free to bring along a friend! We’d love to see you there to learn some new things & explore your creativity!

Uxbridge Community Members, I am writing to express my enthusiastic support for Kara Guy as a candidate for the Uxbridge School Committee With 25 years in education, including 17 years leading high-ranked public schools, I understand the importance of having thoughtful, knowledgeable, and student-centered leadership on a school committee Kara embodies these qualities and more
For the past five years, Kara has served as President of the Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC), demonstrating her longstanding commitment to advocating for all students Her professional background as a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and a State Director of Early Intervention has given her a deep understanding of student needs, particularly in special education and early childhood development She is a strong advocate for ensuring every child in Uxbridge has access to the resources they need to succeed
Beyond her professional expertise, Kara has been an active and engaged leader in the Uxbridge Public Schools and the community She has served on the Superintendent Search Committee, the UHS Scholarship Committee, and the Taft School Council Additionally,
Dear Neighbors,
My name is William MacMillan, and I am proud to announce my candidacy for Select Board
With a background in machine work, aerospace manufacturing, and engineering, I have built a career that demands problem-solving, innovation, and leadership After founding and running a successful custom machine manufacturing business for ten years, I now serve as a Regional Technical Specialist for a global manufacturing company, supporting over 1,200 customers ranging from small machine shops to large aerospace and power generation industries My daily work revolves around driving efficiency, fostering
her involvement with the Pout Pond Recreation Committee highlights her dedication to improving the quality of life for all Uxbridge residents
I had the privilege of working alongside Kara during my time on the Uxbridge School Committee, where I served as the liaison to SEPAC It was during this time that I witnessed firsthand her deep commitment to all students in our schools She brings a thoughtful, solutions-oriented approach to challenges and has a genuine passion for making Uxbridge schools the best they can be

My wife, Melissa, and I were drawn to Uxbridge for its historical charm, and we are committed to preserving and enhancing what makes this town special As a current member of the Zoning Board, I have seen firsthand the challenges facing our town, including the need for strong leadership in navigating state government overreach Its my opinion that the citizens deserve a candidate who will ensure responsible development, while protecting the interests of our residents, businesses and schools
Uxbridge deserves leaders who promote transparency, accountability, and fiscal responsibility I am a capable
Dear Readers,
I am running for re-election for a three-year term on the Uxbridge Select Board and I respectfully ask for your vote
Serving the town of Uxbridge and its residents on the Select Board has been an honor that I hold in the highest regard I am committed to continue to listen to your perspectives so that I may represent you on issues that improve the quality of your lives As a person with disabilities who receives assistance from SSDI, I can relate to many of the issues that residents living on fixed incomes, including our senior citizens, face every day, and the concerns of increased costs of goods and services One way that I will continue to do that is to continue advocating for a more substantial split tax rate to benefit residents
I am a parent of two young children who are enrolled in Uxbridge schools Their education is deeply important to my wife Jessica, who serves on the school committee, and myself We want them to grow up learning to respect different points of view, knowing how to work with others as a team, helping the underserved, and empowering them to be the positive change that’s needed for a better world
Over my time as a member of the selectboard I have
• Assisted in establishing a split tax
candidate who supports a businessfriendly, education driven environment that provides tangible benefits to taxpayers I am committed to ensuring that our town remains a clean, quiet, and affordable place to live, work, and grow
I look forward to meeting with you, hearing your concerns, and working together to build a stronger Uxbridge Your support means everything, and I ask for your vote in the upcoming election on May 20, 2025

rate, which allows Uxbridge to shift more of the tax burden onto the Commercial, Industrial and Personal Property (CIP) classes which then decreases the burden to the Residential and Open Space
• Helped to bring the award-winning Pre-Arrest Co-Response Program created by Advocates and funded by Massachusetts Dept of Mental Health Working in the field with Co-Response clinicians allows police officers the opportunity to deliver rapid mental health services to those they encounter

I hope you will give me the opportunity to continue my work on behalf of Uxbridge and its residents, helping it to grow and prosper while ensuring our town is always a safe and welcoming place for all Thank you
Women empowering Senior Women at Plummer Place!
Michelle LaChapelle and Amy Cowen both work at Plummer Place, Home of the Northbridge Senior Center
Michelle is the Assistant Director and Amy is the Program and Volunteer Coordinator Prior to being the Assistant Director, Michelle was an occupational therapist Amy comes to her position as a former educator Michelle and Amy share an office suite so to speak, and like people to feel as if "our door is always open!" Seniors and older adults are always stopping in to chat with them, even if it's just to say "hi " Other folks sit down and stay awhile to share their thoughts, stories, or a special event happening in their lives Both
Amy and Michelle like making a difference in the lives of seniors in and around their community and look forward to coming to work each day!
Amy and Michelle had been hearing from a lot of women who weren't sure where they fit in anymore due to a recent move, an empty nest, illness, retirement, divorce or the loss of a spouse Through their own experiences, they knew the benefits of women supporting one another and wanted to share that with senior women As such, they structured an informative and supportive women’s circle that shares with one another, learns from one another, and often hosts women speakers Their women's circle has created vision boards together, meditated, completed tasks together, journaled with one another, and even

donated to a local women's shelter Joyce Brill, one of the women from their "Women on the Move" circle, as this group refers to themselves said, "this is my favorite program at the senior center It gives senior women a place to share their perspectives on any number of topics and I have met several women through this group that I might never have known! It is a warm and welcoming group where everybody has a voice and is safe If you come to a meeting once, you will surely want to return "
This past fall, Michelle and Amy were honored to present their “Women on the Move” program at the Massachusetts Council on Aging’s Annual Conference Their presentation was incredibly well received by their peers and colleagues, and Amy and Michelle are now assisting other senior centers with forming these important women’s circles across the state "During the Conference, I had the pleasure of witnessing Plummer Place staff members, Michelle LaChapelle and Amy Cowen, present a workshop on the women’s circle they have established at our Center Watching Amy and Michelle share their experience was truly a proud moment and I am incredibly honored to have them both as a part of the Plummer Place Team!" shared Kelly Bol, Plummer Place director FMI on Plummer Place, Home of the Northbridge Senior Center, please call (508) 234-2002

Toshiba Grant funding enhances skill development at BVT
Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School (BVT) has received a $3,390 STEM grant from the Toshiba America Foundation
The school has used the supplemental funds to purchase an oscilloscope training board and ten oscilloscopes for its Engineering & Robotics program The equipment is necessary to enhance students' understanding of circuit board functions and teach them how to adjust waveforms to produce desired outcomes
Recently, sophomore students in Mr Timothy Oliveira's digital electronics course used the grant-acquired equipment in a fun and engaging assignment
Using the instructor training board, Mr Oliveira demonstrated how students should use an oscilloscope, a diagnostic instrument, to draw a graph of an electrical signal and create a circuit board to illuminate the eyes of a stuffed ani-

Uxbridge Community Gardens
Open for the Season on April 19
It is that time again! Gardening season is on the horizon and it’s time to think about growing those luscious veggies and amazing flowers Only a few garden spaces remain to be reserved for the 2025 season at the Uxbridge Community Gardens, according to Chairman Kim Demers “We had a good year last year and a lot of gardeners are now returning to their spaces year after year This is our 13th season and things have really settled in We have a water tap near every garden and provide wood chips for paths and

manure for fertility at no extra cost to the gardeners There are also many experienced gardeners who are always willing to help others with problems or gardening questions”
There are so many reasons to have a garden according to many health authorities In addition to eating better, a garden provides exercise and stress relief for the gardener Gardens can teach kids about the food that they take for granted and build communities around common goals But you know all that; so if this is the year for you to
